What do I need to add Airport to an early-2009 Mac Pro?

The wife's MB871LL/A. She wants to "get rid of all the wires". I'm pretty sure that just about any Apple Airport Extreme desktop card will work, but do I need to also get an antenna cable, etc.?

As far as remember, antenna cable is already installed inside of Mac Pro, so don't need anything except Airport Extreme Card.

I would always have a wired keyboard and mouse on hand (need not be expensive ... any cheap wired devices will work). "Emergency recovery" procedures can activate features in random order, so the opportunity to select a recovery partition may pass before the wireless devices are recognized.
That will let you select the "turn on Bluetooth" icon.

PROBLEM: Early 2009 Mac Pro with Mavericks. (needs to reboot)

Hi! I´m a music producer and using my mac pro at a daily basis. Yesterday I saw the need to upgrade from Snow Leopard to Mavericks as many of the plugins and VST´s im using no longer have the support for Snow Leopard.
When finally the machine was done upgrading everything looked promising. But, after a new update on Mavericks, downloaded from the App Store, the computer needed to have a restart. When doing this an error occured saying "You computer needed to restart as a result of an error". This happens everytime i restart my mac!
Also, when I shut down the computer the white LED lamp at the front of the Mac is on and I need to push the powerbutton to shut it down (not holding the button down like a restart, just simply push it once)
My co-worker also did the upgrade on his Late 2010 iMac, with no fault whats so ever.
Has anyone got a solution for me? Would really appreciate the help

"Tested"… no. Used… yes. I find that tests, while a good starting point, often don't give the whole story. The Hitachi drives that I used in a client's MP felt reasonable. They weren't great anywhere but neither were that horrible anywhere, which to me is often just as important. Basically, these aren't going to win any competitions yet they're going to be well off the bottom too. This makes them a good average drive when you don't know what to do.
While they're not for me as I get much better buys for my style of usage, heavy small file read/write which the Maxtor MaXLines excel at (which is why I bought them) rather than sustained large read writes that the Seagates excel at, they are a reasonable choice for a "jack of all trades" type drive and being enterprise class they can be used without issue in a RAID set.
With a bit of effort in research and some good knowledge of your usage habits you can probably buy better drives that are slanted to your style although they aren't going to stink anywhere such as the Seagates as boot drives.

I have a new two processor 2.66GHz Quad core that needs an Airport Extreme card. I ordered one from OWC, but the manual does NOT cover the 2009 models. I have three terminals on the card marked 0,1,2. The wires are labeled 1,2,3. Bluetooth was already installed so the BT wire is already in place on the module. What is the correct combination of wires to use on the 3-terminal board?

I realize it isn't trivial. There are lots of permutations and you've got to open up the Mac and pull out the processor tray for each one. Sometimes that's what you've got to do when you're a pioneer. (Well, that and the silly Levi's commercials.)
The other alternative is to pry the information from OWC tech support -- if they even have it.

No power adaptor is needed as the power units are auto-switching. But you will need wall outlet adaptors such as you will find in Apple's World Travel Kit, at AAA stores, and other vendors.

I have a early 2008 Mac Pro. ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT 256 MB is what i have now. What is a good upgrade graphic card to get.

The GTX 780 6GB runs fine on the dual PCIe internal power cables -- as does the GTX 680 and Radeon HD 7950. The same can't be said of the GTX TITAN or GTX 780 Ti or Radeon R9 280X -- all of which require an auxiliary power feed to avoid a nasty power down of your tower at the worst moment when too much wattage is demanded of the Mac Pro's factory power supply.
Did I mention that the GTX 780 with 6GB of GDDR5 matches the 6GB of GDDR5 in the TITAN?
The one fallacy to my 'sweet spot' award has to do with OpenCL. In case you hadn't noticed, the AMD Radeon GPUs smoked the NVIDIA GeForce GPUs running Photoshop's OpenCL accelerated Iris Blur filter and rendering LuxMark's OpenCL accelerated Room scene.

So depends on budget, whether you want a PC card for less but no "early EFI boot screen" prior to drivers loading, and what apps and needs you have.
The one thing for sure is that 2600XT should have been retired ages ago and even more so with 10.8.3 and above, it could be trouble or just... PITA/POS.

No. Each ATI 4870 needs two auxiliary power connectors. There are only two in the Mac Pro.

Need help with graphics card options for an early 2008 mac pro

   I have an early 2008 mac pro with 2 x 3.2 GHz quad core Intel Xeon and 6Gigs of ram, currently running with an Nvidia Geforce 8800 GT with 512mb.
    It is also running 10.7.2.
   I would like to either add a video card on top of the one I am currently running or replace it completely if necessary.
   I do video editing on the Mac, no gaming and only a small amount of photoshop, and as the resolutions get larger I would like to have my machine keep up.
   My questions are,
     1. What cards would you the community suggest?
     2. Can I add a whole other card to my system or do I have to replace the current one?
     3. If I can hold two cards what special accomidations would be needed in regards to final cut performance if any?

The two main cards for mac pros are the apple versions of the ATI Radeon 5770 and 5870.
The 5770 requires one aux power adaptor and the 5870 requires two. So generally you could only have one 5780 or two 5770's.
Video cards which don't require aux power should be able to coexist with these cards so log as it's all within the power supply maximums of course.

Memory - 24GB
Graphics Card - ATI Radeon HD 4870
I use After Effects and Premiere Pro daily for my work. I am not too technically minded. I want to update and improve my machine as much as possible and am thinking of buying an SSD drive to replace my current start up disk. I also am thinking about getting the GTX 680 mac version graphics card. I have read many online discussions regarding OpenCL and CUDA, many discussions with mixed feelings about the improvements the 680 gives an older Mac Pro - some people say it is amazing others say the improvements seem minimal or worse.
What I want to know is if I purchase the SSD and 680 graphics card what is the optimal OSX - 10.8 or 10.9? and what is the optimal versions of AE and PP to have - CS6 or CC? Also what settings and what additional drivers would I need to consider?
I contacted an independent authorised mac reseller and he thought it was a bad idea to put a new graphics card and get the latest OSX in an old machine and tried to sell me a used 2010 Mac Pro, but I think it would be more cost effective to get the SSD and 680 instead, it's just I read the occasional horror story on a forum and I worry about making the wrong choice, I rely on my Mac Pro to make a living!

Thank you for the valuable information Eric, I think I will go with the 680 but I understand that it wont be fully utilised on my old Mac Pro.
Perhaps I will replace my startup/applications hard drive with a 480GB SSD. My other 3 bays are full with 3 x 2TB Hard drives that have media on them so I have no spare room for a dedicated SSD drive for AE cache. But could I put a 250GB SSD into one of the PCI-E slots using something like - SSD SuperSpeed Upgrade Kit for Apple Mac Pro 2008 2009 2010 2012 | eBay
Would this be my best solution? Is it a relatively simple installation, does anyone have any experience of a similar setup?

I am running OSX Yosemite Version 10.10
My Mac Pro keeps re-booting. Last year I had to replace my graphics card. My original card was the ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT 255MB, and that is what I have now. At this precise moment my Mac Pro is running perfectly, except that it is slow and the spinning beach-ball keeps appearing. I have managed to do some work with the disk utilities, verifying, cleaning and partitioning. Some errors were found and when it was cleaned this seemed to help my Mac Pro to function properly. Although I am able to use my Mac Pro now, from day to day I still experience re-boot problems. Also quite unexpectedly my mac dictionary has an error, it closed itself down and will not open at all, I had the message to say that a report will be sent to Apple.
I have tried starting my computer with an external hard drive fitted via a USB cable, I use for back-ups. This worked and I was able to wipe my hard drive clear and replace all info from the back up I had done only a few days ago.
This worked for a few days and then the same problem started again.
I am beginning to wonder if I need to buy a new hard drive.
If there is anyone who has some answers to help me solve my problem, I would be most grateful.

How to setup a network setup with an airport extreme card in a mac pro

I have installled an airport extreme card in my mac pro. Restarted the mac. The AP black triangle appears on right top of the screen. If I activate the AP than the a light grey triangle appears, with grey bars. I can create a network, than the triangle becomes dark grey with an kind of black computer icon in the grey area. The signal strength shows all blue bars.
I have two other wireless networks (linksys and another for streaming music) both are working and detected by my imac. But the mac pro does not detect these networks.
I would have thought that the two networks would be detected automatically.
Please some advice to solve this problem

You won't believe this, but the card is a crock. Mine was installed by an Apple tech at an Apple store. He obviously did not check out reception.
At home, I tried setting this up right next to a Netgear wireless router (2 feet away!), and got no signal bars. Yet I pull the cover off the machine and I get 4 bars and can connect to an 802.11g network. This stinks. What idiot at Apple designed a card where the antenna is a 1" square piece of metal? Could this be an emi cage? Where did they hide the so-called "built-in" antenna. Who knows?
See if you can aim the back of the machine toward the wireless router. There is a back door into this mother, through the fan(ny) opening.

I've got a 2008 Mac Pro (dual quad @ 3GHz) w/ 24GB RAM and I've got Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit installed. What do I need to install?
On my newer 2009 iMac (which included Mac OS X 10.6) I just inserted that disc specific to the iMac and installed the drivers, but the disc for my Mac Pro is old (10.5.2) do I need to install the drivers on it or not? Can I just insert my Snow Leopard 10.6 disc to install Boot Camp etc., or won't that include drivers for the Mac Pro? The Mac Pro is running Snow Leopard 10.6.8.

I have both the silver discs specific to my iMac and Mac Pro models that you receive with your Mac, and a general copy of Snow Leopard that you buy from the store.
I used the silver disc that is specific for my iMac to install the drivers, and Boot Camp 3.0 on my iMac. But with the Mac Pro, the software is older and only has Boot Camp 2.0, thus I'm wondering if I can simply use the software on the general copy of Snow Leopard I own, or does the silver disc contain specific drivers for my Mac Pro that I need?
I'm under perhaps the wrong impression that the silver discs that you get with your Mac purchase contain drivers for your specific Mac model which you can't get from the general Snow Leopard disc.
