What do i need to back-up before re-installing?

appreciate any input; other than the obvious, which specific folders/files do i need to back-up before i re-install osX? where can i find my itunes library, imovie& idvd projects and other ilife files? any special software (free :)) i should use or can i just copy these to my external fw drive?
i tried A&I to fix frontrow but it still fr will not run. now apple service wants to do clean install but i'm worried about losing all my files if i don't back-up the correct/necessary folders/files.
finally, sorry if a dumb question. but this will mean re-installing all software updates right? thanks!

Get an external, bootable FireWire HD. Use something like Carbon Copy Cloner, SuperDuper!, SilverKeeper, etc. to make a bootable clone of what's currently on your comupter. Then, after doing an Erase & Install installation, when the computer restarts the first time, use the same username, short name, and password currently on the computer, and then the Migration Assistant, to transfer everything from your clone to your new installation. That will transfer all of your non-Apple applications, their supprot files, and your user stuff to the machine.

I purchased Adobe Creative Suite 3 Master Collection Design Across Media Upgrade for Windows at a business closing.  What do I need to find out before I can use it?

I couldn't tell you what you purchased, and it might even be difficult for an Adobe employee to do so.  The business could have a few options as far as what they might have purchased.
Your best bet, considering what little you paid, will be to hand it over to someone you might sell it to and let them try it out.  If it works, then it works.

  • After updating my MacBook Pro to yeosemite I want my old screen saver picture back. I did a full back up before the install. I found the "Settings" folder in Time machine but when I try to open it I get an error message saying "You can not open this

After updating my MacBook Pro to yeosemite I want my old desktop picture back. I did a full back up before the install. I found the "Settings" folder in Time machine but when I try to open it I get an error message saying "You can not open this folder. It is in TimeMachine".

Can you browse the Time Machine drive from Finder?
If you can and you know where the picture was stored ie on your desktop you can browse through the folder structure to the picture copy it and paste it somewhere on your new install before right clicking it and 'set as desktop background'

  • Create a report in a popup (validation needed in back bean before popup)

    Hi all,
I am very new to JDev and ADF, I am struggling to generate a report in a popup through the back bean, some validation is needed in the back bean before the popup. When creating the popup window, the url of the popup will be the URL of a servlet I searched the forum and found 2 approaches:
    http://thepeninsulasedge.com/frank_nimphius/2007/09/11/adf-faces-showing-reports/
can af:showPopupBehavior work together with action- or launchListener? (approach by Julian Stephen)
But I have a few questions for these approaches:
    for first approach:
is “documentURL” in the commandButton_action() the url for the my report servlet,
another thing is that, in this commandButton_action(), it said: return "dialog:open"; But I couldn’t find anywhere in the content that shows dialog, open are component ids? Or I am misunderstood it?
    for the second approach:
where is the url for my report servlet put? Is it in the "hints" in the function “popup.show(hints)”?
I can try the second approach first, but for the first approach I really want to know what is the "return dialogLopen" about?
If there are any other means, please let me know!
    Your help is highly appreciated!
    Shawn

My bad, in the first approach, "dialog:open" is the action string not component ids.

  • I am running Mac OS X and need to back up before installing Snow Leopard , can I back up to my Time Capsule?

I am running Mac OS X currently and need to upgrade to Snow Leopard.  First I need to back up my computer.  I have a Time Capsule that automaticallyt backs up Snow Leopard and above but do not have Time Machine on this system.  How can I back up what I an currently running?

Do I download these?  I am not particularly good at this, so any help would be great.  What I know now is that it is recommended to back up current comuter before installing snow leopard, but I have no idea how to do this.  I know I can go from 10.4.11 directly to Snow Leopard but am afraid I will lose data.

  • What files should I transfer back to a clean install of mountain lion?

    Hi,
I have a 2.4 GHz core 2 duo running snow leopard. I want to upgrade to mountain lion but want to start with a clean install. i have everything backed up on an external hard drive. My questions are this: what files should I transfer over from 10.6.8 while leaving the old junk behind. I will reinstall only the compatible apps later.
My second question should I use migration assistant or set-up assistant? I can't seem to find the necessary tutorial that is straight forward for this.
    Any help would be appreciated.

If you're doing a clean install, which usually isn't necessary, then you want to bring over as little as possible. You can use Migration Manager in Setup Assistant to bring over your Accounts if there are no problems there. (If there are it probably accounts for the issues you're having and you'll need to troubleshoot your Home folder.)
You'll probably want to leave settings behind. Applications you already said you would install later.
The reason to run Migration Manager on the Setup Assistant is becuase after that it tends to create a second Home folder, which is not helpful.
Be sure you have a good backup before you begin.

  • What do I need to watch out for when installing Mountain Lion from scratch?

I feel like it's a good moment to erase everything from my computer and reinstall Mountain Lion. I'd like to know which things I should watch out for.
Most of my important stuff is located on an external hard drive. Some of the applications are located there as well, the other ones I can simply re-downloading, I don't mind this.
I have my whole iTunes library and my iPhoto library which obviously I'd like to keep. I'm also concerned about my text messages on my iPhone -- they're very important to me. And so are also my Notes, Reminders, and Contacts.
The thing is, I do not want to do a fresh install and then reload a backup. What would be the sense of making this? None I guess... I'm doing a fresh install becuase I believe there's lots of useless files and maybe even dangerous files on my Mac that I'd like to get rid of. I guess that if I would load the backup, they would all be here again...
Is it maybe possible to load only certain things from Time Machine, for example my iPhoto or iTunes library?
Maybe someone can help me here, totally new with this...

Alright, I'm slowly getting ready to do this. Apparently I do not need an install DVD but I can just press CMD+R to get to the option to do a fresh install, that's why my Mac didn't come with an install DVD (that's what I've read and what I've been told at least).
Now I'm wondering... do I need to copy those items from the User folder at all? I mean, I have a complete backup on an external hard drive. I could just go there in the folders and select what I would like to copy to my Mac again, suchs as my music library or photo library. Is there any risks? I'm worried about even the smallest things, like creation dates changing and stuff like this. They mean something to me

  • Do I need to uninstall CS5 before I install CS6

I started to download CS6 apps, thinking they would upgrade my old CS5 apps. This does not seem to be the case since now I have both CS5 and CS6 apps at the same time or did I do something incorrect?I have subscribed to CS5 for over a year now. Just wanted to make sure.

wondered if I needed my old software on it before upgrading.
    No.
"Upgrades" are all full versions of the software. They don't depend on prior versions being installed in order to function. Upgrade licensing just means you pay less because you already own a previous qualifying version.
In the case of Creative Suites (CS5, CS6) "upgrade" only refers to the serial number.
In the Creative Cloud there are no serial numbers. They're activated via your Adobe ID. The versions available in the Cloud (CS6, CC and CC 2014) are all full versions containing full executable code.

  • G4 Tiger: need to back-up and re-install: how is this best accomplished?

I have numerous errors on my system and feel like it would be best to back-up and re-insatll Tiger. Is this just as simple as copying all my files to my back-up drive and then reformatting?

No. You need to use something like Carbon Copy Cloner, SuperDuper!, Disk Utility (restore only, not image), etc. to make a bootable backup of your system. Be advised that if your problem's software related, the backup will probably exhibit the same problems. See http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/backuprecovery.html and search these forums for backups for more details.

  • Backed up before clean install but now can't see my files?

I got Time Machine to do a full backup of my Mac Mini to my Time Capsule prior to doing a clean install of Mountain Lion.
All went well with the install but how do I access all the files I backed up?

Was the entire folder copied including the iTunesLibrary.itl file?

  • What do I need to backup?

Hi, I didn't know where to post this so..
I want to completely reinstall OS X on my MacBook, but my iPhone syncs with it so what do I need to back up from the MacBook so I don't lose all the stuff on my iPhone when it syncs?

You're entire itunes library, contacts from address book, ical, any photos, & your phone's backup, which is located here:
    On a Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/
Your phone will see this as a new computer, thus deleting all itunes content on your phone & replacing with the content from your "new" computer.
If you restore your phone on the "new" computer from a backup as described here, you won't lose any data:

iOS 5.0.1 has been out for a couple months, if not longer.
There was no delay in releasing it in any country.
    So what is your issue?
