What do I need to be ready for Snow Leopard?

I have an Intel Mac Pro with OS X 10.5.8.  What do I need to do to be ready for Snow Leopard?  Specifically, do I need to do an intermediate OS X upgrade?
Thanks.
David

PLEASE tell people what model.
And no one knows but it is possible that Pre-2008 model will not be supported as they lack UEFI.
It is possible to boot ML even so but that could change. MacPro 1,1 and 2,1 likely will not be supported, those models dont' support 64-bit kernel mode.
My guess, stay where you are until you need to or buy a new Mac.

  • HT4163 Need iPhoto 9.0 for Snow Leopard 10.6.8

I have an old macbook running 10.6.8.  I want iPhoto version 9 ('11), but all I can find in the app store is version 9.3, which only runs on Lion.  I want iPhoto for Snow Leopard.  I can see no reason why Apple has forsaken Snow Leopard. There is no reason why the App store can't have version 9.0 so both Lion and Snow Leopard users can buy it and update it to suit individual needs.  Does anyone know how to get version 9.0 for Snow Leopard online?

Just a follow-up.  I did purchase iLife '09 on eBay and it works smoothly. A few hiccups. I mistakenly did an "upgrade install" of OS X, twice.  "Upgrade installs" take a long, long time to do, and in the end, just don't work.  It turned out that the utilities menu that I needed to access in order to reformat and do a "clean install' was pushed right off the screen where I could not see it, due to a faulty video driver matchup on the install disk.  The result was that I wasn't sure what kind of install I was doing.
So, now I have a mini-Mac that works just like it used to, but really with no perceptible advantage to what I had before, just a few bucks lighter, and many hours of effort.  The good news is that my older mini-Mac (read the Apple fine print carefully on which Intel processors do and don't work) will run Snow Leopard, albeit a little slower than Tiger.  Hopefully, Apple technology and the various software upgrades required to browse the Internet will stay compatible with Snow Leopard for a while yet.  But the Apple mini-Mac takes the cake for the poorest backward compatibility I've run across since I began with computers in the late 1960s.

  • What is the latest version of XCode for Snow Leopard?

I have XCode 4.0.2 for Snow Leopard installed.  Is that the latest version available for Snow Leopard?
Is Apple pushing us to upgrade to Lion to get a version newer than 4.0.2.  I see that XCode 4.2 is available for Lion.
    David.

This information might be useful for those who are not members of the $99/year iOS Developer Program.  I am not a member, I have Snow Leopard, and I purchased Xcode 4.0 for $5 from the Mac App Store in March 2011.  Just for fun I searched the app store for Xcode.  As expected, the only search result is Xcode 4.2 with stated minimum requirement 10.7 (Lion).  I am curious why it even shows Snow Leopard users the active Free button that implies I can download it.  I don't know how the app store works but I assume it would not let me install this on 10.6 Snow Leopard.
But the Purchased view shows Xcode for Snow Leopard.  I noticed the button on the right showed Update rather than Installed.  Clicking the item name to find details including the version number shows Your request could not be completed.  I decided to update in hopes this would be 4.2.  I deleted Install Xcode from my Applications folder, restarted the App Store, then pressed the Update button.  1.77GB later I have Install Xcode in my Applications folder, preview shows version 4.2 (used to show 4.0.2),
The installer just finished running, I now have Xcode 4.2 build 4C199.  About Xcode.pdf in the Developer folder starts with Developer tools for Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard and iOS 5.  So this is clearly not exactly the same as Xcode 4.2 for Lion.  It does include the iOS 5 SDK, LLVM 3.0, etc.  Not sure what is different in the Lion build.

  • Getting ready for Snow Leopard + Windows 7... help?

I have a currently 300g Hard Drive in my early 2008 MacPro (with 50g free), and really want to go to a dual-boot w/ Snow Leopard and Windows 7 here in a few months.
I have another internal drive that's 750g, and I'm thinking of using that one as my startup drive. That way (obviously) I can partition it and have more room for both operating systems (2/3 Snow Leopard, 1/3 Windows)
My question is this: What's the best way to go about this?
Should I go ahead and partition that drive, and then copy my current system onto the 2/3rds I want to use for Snow Leopard, and then turn off my computer and swap the drives?
Anything to "look out for" when partitioning? I've never done it before...
After I swap the drives, I automatically start-up on the correct partition?
Also, is 750g too big for a startup drive?
Maybe stupid questions, but I'm really looking forward to both of these operating systems coming out, and I want to make sure I get it right!
    tia,
    e

I actually want to put both on the 750, so I can have all the rest of my internals be 1tb each (i keep my video editing stuff on one, my audio editing on another, and my iTunes on the other).
Just make sure you've got all that stuff backed up. Lots of people get a false sense of security, thinking "My stuff isn't on the boot drive, so it's safe," but this couldn't be further from the truth. Maybe this is unneeded advice, but just in case, I'd recommend reading my [Mac Backup Guide|http://www.reedcorner.net/thomas/guides/backups> (or some other backup reference).
So... I just zap the 750, partition it in Disk Utility, Carbon Copy Clone my existing Startup Disk to the correct partition, and then "point" to that as my startup volume in SysPrefs? Right?
If you're using Parallels, rather than Boot Camp, partitioning is completely unnecessary. Other than that, yes, you've got it.

  • What Keychain files need to be copied into Snow Leopard?

    Getting ready for SL.
What, and where, Keychain files do I need to copy from Leopard to SL?
    I found these:
    /Users/Kenny/Library/Keychains
    /Users/Kenny/Library/Preferences/com.apple.keychainaccess.plist
    /Users/Kenny/Library/Preferences/com.apple.keychainsync.plist
    Am I missing something?
    Thanks ... Ken

ere's no reason to do an E&I, it's wasted effort. Macs aren't windoze-based PCs. Just ensure that you have a bootable, external HD (preferably FireWire, since it's 40-50% faster than USB 2 and designed for data transfers), with a bootable backup/clone before updating/upgrading, and ensure that it's bootable and works like the original or one restored from a Time Machine backupl. That allows you to revert to the previous good state without having to reinstall anything. See these for details:

    3. if not, can i install a _*Quicktime 7 PRO*_ , while keeping the QT 10? -- i mean: have the both versions on my computer.

  • Is AppleCare's TechTool Deluxe 3.1.2 ready for Snow Leopard?

I have another year left on my AppleCare and it came with TechTool Deluxe 3.1.2. I checked the Micromat site and there is no other update.
Does anyone know if it is compatible with Snow Leopard?
    Thom

It seems the current techtool deluxe apple offer for download is also incompatible with more recent models of MackBook Pro. WHen I went to download the Techtool Deluxe from https://support.apple.com/techtooldeluxe/main?id=dl I get this message:
+Note: The MacBook (13-inch, Aluminum, Late 2008) and MacBook Pro (15-inch, Late 2008) *are not fully compatible with this version of TechTool Deluxe*. The MacBook Air is fully compatible with this version of TechTool Deluxe when used with the MacBook Air SuperDrive. Please check back later for a new version of TechTool Deluxe+
Does anyone know if this update (TechTool Deluxe 3.1.3 Updater) fixes just Snow Leopard compatibility - or hardware as well?

  • Is iLife and Aperture ready for Snow Leopard?

Snow Leopard has Grand Central Dispatch and OpenCL built in. Does anyone know if the iLife software or Aperture use these new features of Snow Leopard? I can not find anything on Apple software. You would think that iLife and Aperture would already be optimized so Snow Leopard. If they are not, maybe updates will be coming soon? Let me know what you find out!
    Kevin

iLife '09 is bundled as part of the Mac Box Set on Apple's Store.
iLife '08 has been reported as compatible on:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10063533&#10063533
    http://snowleopard.wikidot.com/
says that Aperture 2.1.3 is compatible.
Whether they actually use those features, you may want to look at http://developer.apple.com/
If they are not, maybe updates will be coming soon?
Terms of use forbid us from speculating. Your question asks as to speculate what will be in a future version. If you want to find out what will be in a future Apple software, join the program on the above Developer page, and follow the non-disclosure agreement you receive.

  • Am I ready for snow leopard?

    Hi Forum
For some time I have wanted to upgrade from 10.5 to 10.6. I have tried it once before but experienced problems. My MBP froze for periods of 1/2min, showed the color wheel, and sounded like working strangely at the HD. This pattern was repeated roughly every 10th minutte.
I read somwhere that it was related to the version of my HW, and later I have seen one place describing the issue as solved.
Have any of you experienced the same problem and can you confirm the bug has been solved?
    My MBP:
    Modelnavn: MacBook Pro 15"
    Model-id: MacBookPro2,2
    Processornavn: Intel Core 2 Duo
    Processorhastighed: 2.33 GHz
    Antal processorer: 1
    Antal kerner i alt: 2
    L2-buffer: 4 MB
    Hukommelse: 4 GB
    Bushastighed: 667 MHz
    Boot ROM-version: MBP22.00A5.B07
    SMC-version (system): 1.12f5
    Serienummer (system): W87141BJW0H
    Hardware-uuid: 00000000-0000-1000-8000-0019E33767BA

Thanks for your input Russa. Unfortunately I'm quite sure that was not the issue. The HD activity didn't sound like a regular activity - more like an error. I kept the SL for some days and things didn't change. I also found a description at a forum, stating that the error back then related to a mismatch between SL and my HW. I found no other solution than to reinstall Leopard and my programs.
It might well be that what you describe will work. I just would like to be sure - to avoid all the reinstallation

  • Getting ready for Snow Leopard Q?

Hi! When I upgraded from Tiger to Leopard, the install was very easy..(although, I can't remember if I did an upgrade or a full install) My iMac came with Tiger. After the install I did have a few kernal issues which turned out to be caused by some 3rd party apps that I had. So now I want to make sure that I don't have any "Stuff" on my iMac that could cause a problem when I upgrade! My Mac runs beautifully. The only concerns I have is the amount of errors that Disk Permissions comes up with that don't go away even if I run it multiple times. I am under the impression that this is a Leopard problem that for the most part can be ignored? Bill

  • What is current version iPhoto for Snow Leopard?

What is the current version of iPhoto for Snow Leopard?  I have used iPhoto ever since 10.6.8 was installed --use Software Update all the time, my current iPhoto says it's v. 8.3.1.  Now, suddenly, when I try to open iPhoto, messages says : " The photo library needs to be upgraded to work with this version of iPhoto. Your photo library will not be readable by previous versions of iPhoto after the upgrade. The upgrade process may take several minutes depending on the number of photos in the library.  (choices are)  Quit - - Upgrade"
I am fearful to click the upgrade because I have assumed iPhoto was up-to-date for this OS 10.6.8.  Fearful, because I envision losing the whole iPhoto library.   I was in our local reseller/retailer yesterday and was encouraged  to "just go ahead and click it!"  but tho' I'm not a nerd, I need to understand what's going on here !  WIll appreciate any thoughtful counsel . . .

9.2.3, which is part of iLife '11.

  • I can't (re)install Xcode for Snow Leopard

After deinstalling of Xcode for Snow Leopard, when I try to install it again in AppStore I get 2 error messages, the first one is "This item is temporarily unavailable. / Please try again." and the scond one is "We could not complete your request. / There was an error in the App Store. Please try again later. (100)". I really need the Xcode and... what I've paid my $$$ for if I can't get the purchase?

It looks like Apple forcing our moving to Lion.
It's not good thing at all and for me specially. I have some software that aren't compartible with Lion so I can't move to it right now.
So far, so less I like AppStore for Mac. The iPad/iPhone version of AppStore has no such problems, why the Mac's one has? Ugrh

So I guess they just yanked it from the App Store. Boo!
I contacted App Store support and they gave me my money back, so that's something, but what I really want is Xcode 4 for Snow Leopard.

Yes, there's been no updates to 10.5.8 for quite awhile, next is paid Upgrades.
    Snow Leopard/10.6.x Requirements...
    General requirements
       * Mac computer with an Intel processor
        * 1GB of memory (I say 4GB at least)
        * 5GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)
        * DVD drive for installation
        * Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply.
        * Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and terms apply.
Which apps work with Mac OS X 10.6?...

It looks like they might still have it...
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A?fnode=MTY1NDAzOA
    If it's a core Duo & not a Core2Duo, then it'll only run in 32 bit mode.
    Lion/101.7 System requirements
        •    x86-64 processor (Macs with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Intel Core i3, Intel Core i5, Intel Core i7, or Xeon processor.)
        •    At least 2GB of memory, I say 6 GB
        •    Latest version of Mac OS X Snow Leopard (10.6.8), with the Mac App Store installed
        •    At least 4GB of disk space for downloading, I say 50 GB.
Like Snow Leopard, Lion does not support PowerPC-based Macs (e.g., Power Macs, PowerBooks, iBooks, iMacs (G3-G5), eMacs).
Lion also does not support 32-bit Intel Core Duo or Core Solo based Macs. Rosetta is no longer available in Lion, which means Lion no longer supports PowerPC applications.
