What do I need to capture VHS?

I know I need a capture device of some sort, but there are so many, and the prices range from $20 to over $500. Don't they all do the same thing? Can anyone recommend one that works with Leopard?

I have and use an ElGato HDTV Stick, which also has video/audio inputs for copying.
However they also make a less-expensive device for exactly what you are looking to do.
It's called "Video Capture" and the info is here:
http://www.elgato.com/elgato/na/mainmenu/products/Video-Capture/product3.html
There may be others, but I cannot vouch for any, except that their HDTV Stick works for me.

  • What videocamera VHS do I need to convert VHS to DVD?

    Hi, I want to convert my VHS video tapes to DVD or Mpeg, I´ve been searching info, and I didn't know that I can plug a videocamera to my powerbook G4, But I don't have a VHS videocamera, so I would like to buy one, can somebody tell me what camera I need, or if any VHS camera can be plug to my computer, I want a good one but not very expensive, and If am I gonna need an extra software, or if I can do this with imovie or iDVD, and one more question, Is this the best way to convert my VHS videos to DVD?
    Thanks.

    VHS (and s-VHS, Video8, and Hi8) are all analog formats and output their video as either composite (phono plug) or s-video (4 wire round connector). None of those plug directly into any newer Macintosh.
    Your Powerbook has a Firewire input connection. That will transmit audio/video from a digital video camera: DV or Digital 8. This is most definitely NOT the same as what your VHS tapes can natively do.
    What to do?
    I assume that your tapes are really VHS and NOT s-VHS.
    1. Let a service transfer he tapes to DV (to keep the best quality) or directly transfer to DVD. Since VHS has not more than 330 lines of resolution, DVD compression is probably OK, but if you want to edit later, you'll need to convert that over to digital video (DV) format in the computer using some software; I use DVDxDV, but there are others (dvdxdv.com).
    2. Get an old VHS dec and rent or borrow (or buy if you are going to do more video taping) a DV or Digital 8 camera with a s-video and/or composit to DV (Firewire) pass through with conversion. Some DV cameras don't have either, some only have s-video. Check out the specifications carefully. Then use iMovie or Final Cut (Pro or Express) to bring the video into your computer as a project in one of those programs. After you capture each hours worth of tape, I would export it back to DV tape immediately as a backup.
    3. Then edit that DV footage to get the "movies" you want to place on a DVD, and use iDVD or DVD SP to create those.
    NOTE: If you have s-VHS or Hi8 video tapes, you should use the s-video connections; they both have about 400 lines of resolution and the composite connection can't do more than 330 lines no matter what the source is.
    When I converted all of my old Hi8 and VHS tapes, I used a media converter from Sony (the DVMC-DA2); there are others. I achieve pretty good results.

  • What piece of equipment is needed to transfer vhs tape to macbook pro?

    I have several VHS tape I want to put on to my macbook pro as a digital file, I was wondering if someone could tell me what equipment is need and where I can buy it from?
    Thanks
    Gemma

    Since the old MBP is dead the only option is to remove the hard drive and use a SATA/IDE to USB adapter to get all your stuff off the old drive.
    One note though make sure you use the same user name and passord on your new MBP as you had on the old one.
    As to software hopefully you have all the license information written down other wise you may have a hard time reinstalling some of it. Also be aware that OS X Lion will not run older PPC software. So if you have older programs that used Rosetta to run it will not run on Lion.
    Good luck with everything.

    I have Mac OS X 10.5.8, what do I need to do to be able to be able to install itunes 11.1?

    Get more information about your computer. Go to the Apple in the upper left corner of any window, then  "About This Mac".  Write down what it says about "version"and report that here.  Now continue to "More Info..."  Copy and paste the information here, but omit the serial number and Hardware UUID (if present).
    If you have a PPC Mac you cannot sync your idevice without a newer computer.  See the end of this post for options.
    If it says you have an Intel Mac you can upgrade to Snow Leopard, but check system requirements first:
    Snow Leopard 10.6 Technical Requirements - http://support.apple.com/kb/SP575
    You can buy Snow Leopard at:
    Snow Leopard disc source - http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
    After installing run the updater to 10.6.8, then upgrade iTunes.
    Jan. 2014 post by Kappy on doing all this: https://discussions.apple.com/message/24599931
    Options if you cannot upgrade:  iTunes Store purchases can already be downloaded directly. Use iTunes Match to put non-Store music in iCloud, then download to your device from there.  Backup your device directly to  iCloud over a wireless connection.  Photos can be downloaded from the Camera Roll using iPhoto or Image Capture.

  • Need to Capture porReqLineId from ShoppingCartPG dynamically

    Hi,
    My Requirement
    From the Shopping Cart Page in iProcurement I have to link a custom form for each line where the users will be able to enter some additional information and based on the information some validations will be done after which the data will be stored in a custom table.
    What needs to be done and what I have done till now
    I have extended the Controller of the Shopping Cart Page. Created a Submit Button and added the button dynamically to each line of Shopping Cart. Set a fireActionEvent to the button. So when the user clicks on the button it should open a new custom page with the Requisition Line ID as a parameter.
    My Problem
    I am unable to capture the Requisition Line ID.
    I have tried the following step
    1. Created a Extended Controller by extending the ShoppingCartCO
    2. In processRequest created a Submit Button named it as "Additional Info" and assigned it to the Table. So it will show a Button in the result table of the Shopping Cart.
    3. Assigned a Fire Action for Submit Button in processRequest using setFireActionForSubmit method. So when the "Additional Info" button is clicked it raises the event set in Fire Action.
    4. In processFormRequest method of the extended CO handled the event by
    if ("addnInfoEvent".equals(paramOAPageContext.getParameter(OAWebBeanConstants.EVENT_PARAM))).
    In this i tried to capture the porReqLineId which is a formParameter using the following
    Number localNumber = 0;
    try {
    localNumber = new Integer(ClientUtil.getDecryptedParameter(paramOAPageContext, "porReqLineId"));
    catch (Exception e) {e.printStackTrace();}
    String outmsg="Line ID : " + localNumber + ":" + str + ":" + strEvent;
    throw new OAException(outmsg,OAException.INFORMATION);
    5. Then I am personalizing the ShoppingCartPG and assigning the new extended controller to the page.
    6. So for the time being I need to capture the porReqLineId and pass it to the new custom page as a parameter. But this is not happening and when i click on "Additional Info" button it doesnt provide me the porReqLineId.
    My Whole Code is pasted below
    ===================================================================

    oasb.setUINodeName("addnInfo");
    oasb.setText("Additional Info");
    otbRN.addIndexedChild(oasb);
    oasb.setFireActionForSubmit("addnInfoEvent",null,null,false);
    public void processFormRequest(OAPageContext paramOAPageContext, OAWebBean paramOAWebBean)
    OAApplicationModule localOAApplicationModule = paramOAPageContext.getApplicationModule(paramOAWebBean);
    String strEvent= paramOAPageContext.getParameter(EVENT_PARAM) ;
    String str = paramOAPageContext.getParameter("event");
    if ("deleteLine".equals(str))
    Number localNumber = 0;
    try {
    localNumber = new Integer(ClientUtil.getDecryptedParameter(paramOAPageContext, "porReqLineId"));
    catch (Exception e) {e.printStackTrace();}
    String outmsg="Line ID : " + localNumber + ":" + str + ":" + strEvent;
    throw new OAException(outmsg,OAException.INFORMATION);

    catch (Exception e) {e.printStackTrace();}
    String outmsg="Line ID : " + localNumber + ":" + str + ":" + strEvent;
    throw new OAException(outmsg,OAException.INFORMATION);
    ===================================================================
    Here I also tried to modify the Oracle defined event of "deleteLine" by just capturing and printing the Req Line ID. This is happening in the case of "deleteLine" event but not in the case of "addnInfoEvent" event.
    Please help me on this.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
    I have used the following in processRequest
    String pageName = paramOAPageContext.getRootRegionCode();
    Hashtable params = new Hashtable (1);
    params.put ("param1", pageName);
    Hashtable paramsWithBinds = new Hashtable(1);
    paramsWithBinds.put ("param2", new OADataBoundValueFireActionURL(oasb, *"${oa.encrypt.current.RequisitionLineId}"));*
    oasb.setFireActionForSubmit("addnInfoEvent",params,paramsWithBinds,false,false);

    Now my requirement is I need to capture the detailed text message in CCMS.
    Note: I have added the rule CCMS_GET_MTE_BY_CLASS and specified R/3 system ID (SID) and MTEClass as SXI_RWBAlerts in RZ20.
    I am getting only the Number of active alerts for the defined Alert Category and the number of alert rules created in RWB.
    Number of active alerts 2
    Assigned alert rule: 1 Alert for Application Category error
    Assigned alert rule: 2 Alert rasied for all IE/AE failures
    What is the method need to be assigned to capture the detailed error text messages from RWB?

  • MSI 1950pro VIVO. What software I need for video-in?

    Hi.
    I am currently using MSI radeon1950pro pcie card. It has VIVO connector too. I tried yesterday to plug my Playstation2 to the card as I dont have TV, well i didint get to play as i dont know what software i should use for that. I installed ati's suplied radeon1950 pro driver package. I also tried to install wdm driver, and some multimedia center stuff, which promptly notices that it will only work/install with all-in-wonder card.
    I also tried with Dscaler and AMcap, but neither of them can find any video capture driver or so.
    I would need to get analog videosignal opened in some program that can handle fullscreen mode, so I could play my Playstation trough my PC screen
    Someone who has done something similar, or just done something with video in pls tell me what software I need..

    I have catalyst 6.11 installed.
    I have also installed WDM driver, at least the installer goes trough.
    I have installed also avivo decoders/encoder files from ati, in addition to this i have installed multimedia center, and some extra kits for it. Like dao/mac, dvd/dtv decoder and some encoder package. I have installed practically all files that i can find from ati.
    Firstly i notice that multimedia center installation creates zero shortcuts, so finding this software is bit hard. Or if it did not install anything, the installer didint notify me, just quit .. cant be sure about this.
    I have also installed Dscaler (tv viewer, that should be able to read video-in, atelast from nvidia cards). I have also installed microsoft media encoder, which is somekind stream capture tool / video encoding tool.
    Problem is that no software detects that this card has VIVO.
    I need to know how to get some damn driver installed so that the video-in comes as visible capture device and then some program to show it.
    Is this somehow related to fact, that ati is offering different driver kit for 1950pro cards? I tried with those drivers yesterday, but they didint help at all.
    am I doing wrong?

  • Device recommended to capture VHS?

    Some weeks ago, this forum provided advice about the best device to capture VHS in a format PE ready. I was unable to follow up on the advice at the time ... any chance someone remembers what it was? I think it was "Pyro" something ... could not find the postings on the forum search. • I need to digitize VHS movies to an editable format to iMac.

    I need to digitize VHS movies to an editable format to Mac. I've tried the Elgato Video Capture but it only works if you use it with the software that only export in mp4 format. No editable format. I need to make adjustments and cut it afterwards. I have an iMac 27 "2.9 GHz Intel Core i5 and OS X 10.8.3. IMovie '11.

    I would suggest using your ElGato.
    Record the video in MP4 or h.264. They should be roughly equivalent quality since h.264 is more efficient.
    These will import and edit directly in iMovie.
    Normally I recommend that you convert mp4 video in HD sizes to Apple Intermediate Codec before editing, but this is standard definition video so it may edit just fine as is.
    If you want to convert to Apple Intermediate Codec, there are two ways. (Three ways if you have the EyeTV 3 software).
    1) Convert it using the EyeTV 3 export menu.
    2) Import to iMovie and choose Optimize - Full
    3) Drag the MP4 into MPEG Streamclip (which is a free app) and use FILE/EXPORT TO QUICKTIME. Choose Apple Intermediate Codec for the compression. Then add to iMovie using FILE/IMPORT MOVIE.
    The alternative are the Firewire-based DACs from Grass Valley. They will convert to DV, and in my experience do not produce enough qualtity difference to justify spending several humdred dollars more. After all, the original VHS is roughly 400x300 pixels, so it is never going to look like DV from a DV camera.
    Personally I use the EyeTV Hybrid with the EyeTV 3 software. I do not know for sure, but I assume the EyeTV Video Capture is very similar, but without the TV Tuner.

  • Need to capture a Status date and keep it unchanged if I change the status

    Hi,
    I have a task list with multiple status like NOT STARTED, IN PROGRESS, WAITING FOR PROOF, WAITING ON SOMEONE ELSE, APPROVED, COMPLETED.
    Now, I wanted to capture the WAITING FOR PROOF date so that I can compare it with TASK DUE date and set if it is "On Due" or Over Due" so I used the following syntax:
    =IF(OR(Status="Waiting for proof",Status="Waiting on someone else"),DATE(YEAR(Modified),MONTH(Modified),DAY(Modified)))
    This works, but if I change the status from WAITING FOR PROOF to COMPLETED, the captured date is changed to "No" which I do not want to happen. I want to retain the same date captured even if I change the status.
    Many thanks,
    Vasanth

    Vasanth, your issue is because you are using the "modified" field whichchanges anytime you open the record. What you may need to add is a datefield that you control and will hold the date you which to compare against. You could initially capture the "created" date in that field then update it ONLY if specific field changes happen so you can change the Status field without disturbing your date comparison. This would require some calculated fields to update this date field only when it is necessary. Good luck!

    What do I need to buy in order for my IPod Classic 160 GB to connect with my blue tooth Ultimate Ears Boom speaker?

    Upgrading RAM and your HD will give you some performance gains, but depending on what you are doing, it may not be enough. Your best friend will always be processor speed. This has a direct relation to how many cores and the speed of the RAM.
    However, if you are unable to spring for a new computer, then the options of running more RAM and a biggger, faster HD should ruduce some bottle necks.
    Here is a site where you can check out what your computer can handle http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/Apple_MacBook_MacBook_Pro/Upgrade They have some charts comparing speed gains with various components.
