• What do i need to connect my macbook pro to my samsung widescreen tv?

My Samsung Widescreen TV has a hook-up (15 pin connector/serial port?) for a PC. What do I need to do to connect my MacBook Pro to it and can I use the TV as the monitor or for viewing an internet website? I'm trying to use the larger screen for a meeting of several people to discuss website improvements?
Thanks

If you can tell me whch TV & MBP you have i can give you exact cable part numbers and settings but short of that i'll try & see what i can do for you. Older MBP do not support audio over the HDMI & by default VGA doesn't either so will need an audio cable in addition to the video regardless which input you use. aparently newer MBP Do support audio over HDMI so as long as your TV does also you're a one cable hookup. My Samsung has a specific HDMI port labled DVI/ HDMI which accepts a cable i got at the apple store & simply plug play. Look in your samsung manual to verify what resolutions the TV suppports, select the input & mode from your menue and set the resolution & you should be good to go. Obviously you'll need to do a little tweaking inorder to optimize the screen but assuming you're familliar with your mac to begin with it's a no brainer. you might not be able to run optimal resolution on the TV untill you close the lid (clamshell mode) on the MBP which means you need a key board & trackpad or mouse. on the other hand if you are attempting to mirror the displays or use it as a 2nd display those modes are also available from the MBP setup. you can detect & gather your screens & calibrate the screens right on the MBP (under dispalys) and once you have the TV reckognizing the input it's nothing but a monitor. now all of the above assumes you are NOT running Lion as i'm NOT. I hope this at least gets you in the ballpark.

There are a number of posts related to access issues between Windows Vista / 7 and AirPort Disks. Two potential solutions being forwarded are: 1) Changing the LAN Manager authentication level, and/or 2) Disabling the Windows Search feature.
To change the LAN Manager authentication level:
From the Windows Vista / 7 desktop, click Start
Search for: security
Click 'Local Security Policy'
Goto Local Policies > Security Options
Under Policy, double-click 'Network security: LAN Manager authentication level'
Change level to: Send LM & NTLM responses
Under Policy, double-click 'Network security: Minimum session security for NTLM SSP based (including RPC) clients'
De-select 'Require 128-bit encryption'
Click OK
To disable Windows Search:
Start > Control Panel > Programs > Programs & Features
On the right-hand side, click "Turn Windows features on/off"
Scroll down, and de-select "Windows Search".
Press OK, close all windows and restart.
A third "solution," that has worked for me, is verify that both the AirPort base station and the Win7 PC are using the exact same Workgroup Name. In my case, I use "WORKGROUP" (without the quote marks) for this name. From the AirPort Utility, you would enter this value on the Disks > File Sharing tab. On Win7, Start > Control Panel > System and Security > System > Change Settings > Change > Workgroup

• What do i need to publish my application to app store

Dear All,
I have an apple developer account only,
What do i need exactly to publish my app to the app store ?
Shall i have a mac laptop ?
please help
Thank you

There are two different paid developer accounts, one for IOS and one for OS X. You need the correct account for the type of applications you are developing.
If you are using some 3rd party software to develop (which in my opinion is a bad idea) you will need to contact support for that software for directions on what to do.

• I am usiing Kaspersky Internet protection. I keep getting a 403 error Virus Detected on just one of the files that I am trying to convert. What do I need to do.

I am getting a message 403 that the file that I am trying to convert has a virus. I use Kaspersky virus detection and I ran it on just that file. I have converted another file with on problems. What do I need to do?

What is your Windows version? 32-bit or 64-bit?
Internet Explorer: you must use the 32-bit version, regardless of your OS version.
What is the exact error you get, and what are you doing when you get that error?

• What do I need first?

I pre-ordered a copy of The Sims 3, which arrived today. I quickly found that I need 10.5.7 (Leopard to run the game.
My machine:
iMac
Mac OS X Version 10.4.11
2.8 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo
2 Gb 667 MHz DDR2 RAM
Graphics Card: ATI Radeon X2600.
As far as I'm aware, I meet all requirements except for the fact that I need 10.5.7 (Leopard).
If this is the case, could someone tell me exactly where I need to go and if there's more than one update, then what sequence I need to install them in? I'm aware I can't just jump in and install 10.5.7 - I have to get the updates leading up to it first right?
Any help is appreciated.
(Apologies if this isn't the correct board to have posted this topic, though technically it is related to Leopard installtion)

Hi Centauri;
No. There are no update available that will get you from 10.4.11 to 10.5.anything. You must buy a Leopard DVD which is what is needed to get you system over the Leopard.
Before you do that I would suggest that you clone your system disk and test the clone to be sure it is possible to boot from it. This is a precaution just in case something goes awry during the Upgrade.

• Mac OS 10.3.9, What do I need and How do I Install OS 9?

Ok so I have an iBook G3 800Mhz laptop with 10.3.9 already installed. I want to install OS 9 for "classic" support and I'm not sure how to do this or what I'll need.
So I have a few questions all in one topic.
What Do I need to install os 9?
How do I install OS 9 with out disturbing my OS X 10.3.9 install.
And Is there any way to avoid having to reinstall OS 10.3.9?

Hi, jobbertoo -
Okay, your G3 machine is a PowerBook (Firewire) model. It originally came with OS 9.0.2, which is a model-specific version of OS 9. All Macs have a minimum OS which they can use, typically the version that they originally shipped with.
This means that a retail OS 9.1 or 9.2.1 Install CD is suitable; since you have a retail OS 9.2.1 Install CD, it should work.
Yes, Mac drives can be partitioned into two or more volumes; many folk routinely do that, particularly with large drives - among other things, doing so can reduce net seek times. For most purposes, Mac OS's treat each partition as if it were a separate drive; this includes the ability to use each partition as a boot volume, with different OS versions on each (there are a few limitations to this, but none applicable in this instance).
It is not necessary to partition a drive in order to have both OS 9 and OSX on it. OSX was designed to be able to cohabit the same volume (a volume = an unpartitioned drive or a partition of a partitioned drive) as OS 9. On those later machines which shipped with both OS9 and OSX pre-installed, both came on the same volume. In that configuration either OS can be used as the boot OS, and OS 9 can also be used as Classic under OSX.
Many folk prefer to separate OS 9 and OSX; doing so can make housekeeping and, should it ever be necessary, re-installation of either OS much easier. Whether you choose to partition or not is your choice.

If you choose to not partition the drive...
You should be able to install OS 9 directly, via a Clean Install. Note that in the Mac OS 9 terminology, a Clean Install erases nothing. Instead, it installs a brand new, 'clean' System Folder, an assortment of OS 9 utility programs, creates a couple of standard OS 9 folders {Applications (Mac OS 9) and Documents}, and little else - it will not overwrite anything. This Apple KBase addresses that -
Article #58176 - Mac OS 8, Mac OS 9: Performing a Clean Installation
You will need to boot the machine to the OS 9.2.1 Install CD in order to do that.
There is a possibility that when you have booted to the CD, the internal hard drive on the PowerBook will not mount (its icon will not be visible on the desktop). If this happens, it usually means that the drive was last formatted by using OSX's Disk Utility and the option to install OS 9 drivers was not selected. If those drivers are not installed, the drive can not be mounted by OS 9, hence is inaccessible for installation when booting to an OS 9 install CD. This Apple KBase article discusses that issue -
Article #106849 - Disk Is Available in Mac OS X But Not in Mac OS 9
If that is the case, the article suggests one possible remedy - using OS 9's Drive Setup to re-install OS 9 drivers. Unfortunately that rarely works, and it then becomes necessary to re-initialize the drive in order to get OS 9 drivers onto it. This erases the drive, so backing up things you do not want to lose is necessary.
You can re-initialize the drive using OSX's Disk Utility; if you do, be sure to select the option to install OS 9 drivers.
You can also use OS 9's Drive Setup to do the work; in this case OS 9 drivers are installed automatically.
In either case, select Mac OS Extended as the format.

If you do want to partition the drive, you will first need to back up any data you do not want to lose, since partitioning a drive will erase it completely.
You can use OSX's Disk Utility or OS 9's Drive Setup to do the partitioning. If you use OSX's Disk Utiity, be sure to select the option to install OS 9 drivers; in either case select Mac OS Extended as the format for each partition.
The following article describes how to use OS 9's Drive Setup, including using it to partition a drive. OSX's Disk Utility is similar in logic, but the settings are on different pages.
Using Drive Setup
As far as a partitioning scheme goes, it would be very good if the hard drive is at least 10GB in size. If that is the case, you can probably get by with about 2GB for OS 9, and the remainder for OSX. If it happens to be a 20GB drive, I'd suggest 5GB for OS 9, the remainder for OSX.
There are two reasons to grant OSX the lion's share of the drive -
(1) OSX needs more room for installation.
(2) OSX runs best when there is at least 5GB free space on the drive after installation of OSX and its applications.

I have not been able to figure out how to save my bookmarks and settings to a flash drive...
As far as copying off those items, someone else will need to advise as to where they might be located.
However, you might consider an alternative -
Get an external firewire drive, something around 20 or 30GB in size, or even larger. Use it to make a clone of your hard drive - everything will be copied over, including a usable version of OSX. Then do what you need to do to the internal drive; once that is done, clone the items back from the firewire drive. This not only makes moving things around a lot easier, it maintains their integrity - more importantly, it provides you with a backup and archiving drive. In order to clone the internal drive you will need to use a cloning utility, such as one of these -
Carbon Copy Cloner
SuperDuper!

I would like to run in 10 and be able to open my 9 apps from my 10 apps. folder. Am i looking at a mac in the correct light?
Not exactly.
OS 9 and OSX are completely different operating systems. OS 9 is the culmination of a series of OS's that started with Mac OS 1.0 over 20 years ago, and shares some of the same basic costruction as the fist one. OSX, on the other hand, is brand new - other than some visual similarities, it shares none of the basics with OS 9 and earlier, not even the same logic of what is where and how various OS files interact.
This means that software written for OS 9 will not run in OSX, and vice versa - there are basic incompatibilities.
One solution for that, applicable to machines which can boot to both OS's (only one at a time, of course), is to have both OS's available and choose which to boot the machine to, depending on what software is to be used. Although your machine can boot to either, not all can - many late model G4 machines and all G5 machines can not boot to OS 9.
However, all OSX versions shipped to date can use OS 9 (OS 9.1 or later, depending on the model) as Classic. Classic is OS 9 used as a program (more like a shell rather than as an emulator) while booted to OSX in order to provide an environment in which many OS 9 programs can be run. An install of OS 9 can be used both for booting (for OS 9 bootable machines) as well as for Classic.
Not all OS 9 programs will fare well in Classic - specifically, OS 9 programs which require direct access to the machine's hardware (such as the graphics card) will not run well, if at all, in Classic - the reason is that OSX retains control of the hardware even when Classic is running. The group of programs most susceptible to this limitation is games.

• What do I need to do to download Firefox 3.6.16?

I am running Firefox 3.6.13 on a Macbook OS 10.6.7. When the update for FF 3.6.16 became available, I began getting a pop up telling me to download it. Every time I try to do this, it keeps trying to download, but nothing happens. The message says "Downloading the update Connecting to the update server..." I am hardwired into the network at my school. What do I need to do to either get the update, or stop the pop up from happening. Interestingly, the update does not show up on the list when I go and check for software updates.

Exactly the same problem on a PPC iMac running 10.5.8 trying to upgrade from 3.6.13 to 3.6.15 - same window, same message, same nothing. I've posted it on this forum but no replies yet :-(

What do I need to do to get my cannon camera to upload pictures into iPad . When I plug it in system comes up connected USB device is not supported?

Use the camera's SD card instead.
Another way. You can use a USB flash drive & the camera connection kit.
Plug the USB flash drive into your computer & create a new folder titled DCIM. Then put your movie/photo files into the folder. The files must have a filename with exactly 8 characters long (no spaces) plus the file extension (i.e., my-movie.mov; DSCN0164.jpg).
Now plug the flash drive into the iPad using the camera connection kit. Open the Photos app, the movie/photo files should appear & you can import. (You can not export using the camera connection kit.)

• Hello, i currently run 10.5.8 and would like to upgrade to enable me to pair my phone with my mack, how do i do it and what do i need to buy ?

hello i currently run 10.5.8 and would like to upgrade tp pair my i phone and stop e-mail probs, how do i do it and what do i need to buy ?

You first need to purchase and install OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard.
http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
Also, it wouldn't hurt to increase the RAM in your iMac.
Your year and model iMac can take 4 GBs of RAM. Out of that amount of RAM, the 2006 iMac will recognize between 3.1 and 3.4 GBs of that total RAM.
Correct and reliable Mac RAM can be purchased from online Mac RAM sources Crucial memory or OWC (macsales.com).
Once OS X 10.6 is installled , you will need to use OS X Software Update function in OS X's System Prefernces Panel to update to OS X to OS X 10.6.8. This will give your iMac access to the Mac App Store.
If you wish, your iMac year and model can only be updated to OS X 10.7 Lion. Your hardware limits you to OS X 10.7 Lion. Your iMac can't run or install OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion OR OS X 10.9 Mavericks.
http://store.apple.com/us/product/D6106Z/A/os-x-lion
My strong advice is that you keep your iMac model on OS X 10.6.8 Snow Leopard. OS X 10.7 Lion needs a full 4 GBs of RAM, for the OS alone. Your Mac barely meets this requirement and will leave no additonal RAM to efficiently run any additional application without severly slowing down your iMac.
Before embarking on a OS X system upgrade, it would be very prudent to back up all of your important, personal data, beforehand.
You can choose just to backup the most important data by either burning data to CDs/DVDs, or copying data to large capacity USB flash drives.
The two better methods is to purchase a good quality external hard drive and backup the data and OS using OS X's Time Machine app to back your data up to an externally connected hard drive.
The other method is to backup your entire system and data using data cloning apps such as Carbon Copy Cloner or Super Duper to clone an exact copy of your iMac's internal hard drive to the externally connected hard drive. Cloning data to an external drive will give that drive the ability to boot from in an emergency. Your Mac will be able to be booted and run off of an external drive.
The type of connection of an external hard drive is yours to choose. The two types of data transfer connections your Mac can use are USB 2.0 or FireWire 400/800.
If you want a hard drive that has a faster, continuous throughput of data and the possibilty of running your iMac from an external hard drive (in the event your Mac's internal hard drive fails or data becomes corrupt and your Mac system won't boot to the Mac's internal drive) opt for a FireWire drive. If none of this is important to you, then get a hard drive that uses a USB 2.0 connection, instead.
Good Luck!

• What do I need to do to get apps to open on facebook?

When I try to open facebook or sign in screens for other programs, all I get is a list of words that should be on that page with blue boxes with ? in them. Not sure why I am uaable to open and see anything. See below. Help?
iPod

For the SD card, are you copying the photos onto it yourself from your computer ? If you are then you need to create a DCIM directory off the root of the card, with the photos underneath it, and the photo filenames need to be exactly 8 characters long (no spaces) plus the file extension i.e. in a similar format as if a camera had created/written them.
In terms of syncing photos, what happens when you try ? You should be able to sync photos by connecting your iPad to your computer and selecting the iPad on the left-hand side of your computer's iTunes, and on the right-hand side selecting the Photos tab - using that tab you should be able to select which photo folders to sync to the iPad. There is a bit more info on this page. You will need to sync all the photos that you want on the iPad together in one go as only the most recent photo sync remains on the iPad - synced photos can't be deleted directly on the iPad, instead they are deleted by not including them in the next photo sync.
