  • Ideas needed for easy java runtime roll-outs

On the cusp of Sun's newfound enthusiasm for Java everywhere I felt I had to post a few questions on the state of the runtime installers. We've been having awful problems getting the runtime installed on clients; Windows XP boxes are a particular problem as users have a very restricted set of privileges and write access - meaning that the runtime installation has to be run by someone with Administrator rights. This just isn't practical when we're trying to roll out a Java Web Start solution enterprise-wide.
In an ideal world I suppose the runtime would be delivered pre-installed and big pat on back for getting Dell & HP to agree to this; but even with their support they'res still going to be a lot of Java unfriendly PC's out there.. Anybody got any clever ideas on routes around these problems.. I've tried to document some of our frustrations in the first part of this document
http://lopica.sourceforge.net/services/ . During the process of writing the same I stumbled across Microsoft's Windows Installer Service WhitePaper which states:
    Operation in Lockdown Environments
    To decrease support costs, many
    organizations have locked down their
desktops by controlling people's ability to
write to the file system and registry. While
this prevents a person from accidentally or
    intentionally modifying their configuration,
    it also requires administrator intervention
whenever a new application needs to be
    installed. Since the Windows Installer
operates as a system service on Windows NT
4.0 and Windows 2000, it has the ability to
run in one of two contexts:
    - As the Local System account, which
has greater privileges than the user
    - As the user, which is the default behavior
In a Windows 2000 environment, using the
    Group Policy-based Change and Configuration
    Management, the administrator can approve
    certain applications, specifying that all
    configuration operations on those
    applications (installation, uninstall, and
repair) run as the Local System account. In
this manner, administrators can lock down
the file system and registry as described
above, and the Windows Installer service can
still perform installations on the person's
behalf. Only those applications approved by
    the administrator run with elevated
    privileges.
I've also run across "Provide .MSI file for Java, to deploy Java using active directory" (http://developer.java.sun.com/developer/bugParade/bugs/4854974.html). It appears Microsoft Installer might be the answer to both enterprise installation and the admin rights installation bugbear which really prevents us from offering users an easy install path. I'd be interested in hearing from anyone who has found any ways around these problems, are their any ms admins out their who've already repackaged the installers as msi packages and got the above deployments to work? Comments? Anyone?
..Finnaly (and can't resist a winge here) I find Sun's renewed interest in Java on the Desktop all very laudable; but the runtime support for Java Web Start and the Window ActiveX AutoDownloader are completely out-of-step. Web Start users still can't access
1.4.1_01, 1.4.1_02 or 1.4.1_03 runtimes from Sun's servers (as per the jnlp specs) (http://developer.java.sun.com/developer/bugParade/bugs/4827788.html) and support for other versions is very limited and always painfully slow coming online (http://developer.java.sun.com/developer/bugParade/bugs/4836169.html) (http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jsp?forum=38&thread=366655).
I understand these are special installers and require extra development alongside the better known .exe versions (which have they're own chequered history with XP & InstallShield issues). But come-on Sun, a little more forethought and support - please..
    - Richard

Does your msi just unpack the files or will it attempt to make the registry changes / os bindings that java plugin & java web start need?
The way around the privs issues with msi's needs some security policy settings being made - I'm assuming these can be done by the domain administrator for all its users - but I'm out of my depth here; this is only a solution for organisations with enforced polices ~ but very important nevertheless.
Sun seem to have attempted this in the past, but they're seems to have been a regression since; the following bug report suggests some manual registry settings that might effect the required changes.
Bug ID 4431060 Installer quits when run as restricted user in windows 2000: http://developer.java.sun.com/developer/bugParade/bugs/4431060.html
But I couldn't get these to work with the (purloined) 1.4.2beta msi, nor the java update beta test (v5.5.5). What I'd really like to know is how to setup a group policy to achieve the same with an msi package that really works.. and have the details about how to setup an msi deployment domain-wide.. the whitepaper suggests both are possible with windows installer.

My computer crashed and I have to get my data from my old drive to another computer, to ensure I get all my data what do I need to get.  I have and ipad and an iphone.  I need to get apps, contacts, pictures, etc.  Is there a way to do this? It was a vista pc and the new is win 7. I can grab the backup files, and music, but what about my apps? I do not want to sync on the new pc since the apps aren't there.  Were are the app files located in itunes? Can I just copy them to the new computer?

You can transfer itunes purchases:  File>Devices>Transfer Purchases
The iphone is not a storage/backup device.  The sync is one way - computer to iphone.  The exception is itunes purchases.
It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer.  Use your backup copy to put everything back.

Read the small print on your power brick. It handles 110 - 240 volts automatically. All you need is a plug adapter to make your current wall plug fit the European wall sockets.

  • How to ensure a smooth update and smooth running mac

Hello all. First off this is not a 'help' or 'query' post, thanks to everyone in this Discussion who has helped me in the past for various mac problems, thought I "give back" and post some good tips and usage on "ensuring a smooth update and smooth running mac" in the long run.
Altogether I have 3 Macs at home to "maintain" (my iMac G5, MacBook and my sis's Mac mini Intel) and in the office my own G5 Tower and 2-3 other same G5s. So far I have "dare to say" (touchwood ) I have not run into any major problems while performing any major OS or Security Updates; I know some of these steps are mentioned and even "preach" many times, but by doing them, you avoid all the inconvenience in the long run:
    Always Backup:
    1. Whatever you do, invest in a 2nd hard drive and perform regular back ups!
    2. If you have a G5 Tower or Mac Pro, get a 2nd drive or 3rd and install internally, if you have the other Macs, get an external FireWire Hard Drive.
    3. Use SuperDuper, and pay the little shareware to get the additional automatic and scheduling functions to help you perform auto backups, or if you prefer doing the backup manually
    4. For home users, I would recommend you perform a Backup once every 2 weeks. Heavy office/work use, I say once a week
    Performing Updates:
    1. Before Starting Up, unplug all external devices like FW drives, USB hubs etc, leave only your wired keyboard, mouse and internet connection (unless they are all wireless)
    2. Start Up your mac, quit all running applications and Repair Disk Permission
    3. Restart again and Repair Permission again
    4. Quit all other running apps and also turn off Norton Anti-virus, run Software Update
    5. Whether or not you have the Restart option after the update, Restart your mac
    6. Repair Disk Permission
    7. Shut down the mac, fix all the external devices etc
    8. Start up your mac, Repair Permission again
    9. Use your Mac as usual
I have been doing these since all the 10.4 updates and I have not encounter any problems with all my macs.
    When a Kernel Panic occurs:
    1. Restart the mac and boot into Single User Mode (fsck)
    2. Run fsck and Repair the mac
    3. Reboot the mac, Repair Permission
    Regular Maintenance:
    1. Get a Maintenance Utility like Cocktail, and pay for the shareware and schedule regular maintenance cycles.
    2. The Mac OS also has a "built-in" maintenance script that runs in the wee hours (local time), so it is actually encourage that you at least leave your mac on overnight for at least one or two nights in the week.
If you do not wish your mac to be left on till the morning, you can always schedule in Energy Saver's Schedule options for the mac to turn on and off at your designated times.
I always leave my office mac on till about 4-5 am in the morning and I set things like Cocktail and NAV scans to run in those hours so they won't disrupt your day time operations, I do the same to my own home iMac.
These tips and pointers are not new and have been mentioned many times in these posts, but if you just take that extra little time to follow through, you will be ensure a better and healtheir running mac.
    Cheers

You can enter your Mac's serial number at this site. Information, based on the serial number, will be shown. http://www.chipmunk.nl/klantenservice/applemodel.html Then tell us what model PB you have.
Usually, you get a blinking ? when no OS is installed. The startup tone (bong) you heard indicates the PB passed the startup hardware test.
     Cheers, Tom

  • I have OS X what do I need to do to upgrade to snow leopard or newer?

What do I need to do to upgrade to the most current OS from OS X 10.5.08?

The 10.6 Snow Leopard DVD is in the Apple online store. You can get it for $19.99. http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard After you’ve installed that then download the 10.6.8 combo updater to finish it off. http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399 You will need to be running 10.6.8 to access the App Store to order 10.9 Mavericks which is a download only.
    System Requirements for 10.6:
Mac computer with an Intel processor
    1GB of memory
    5GB of available disk space
    DVD drive for installation
Some features require a compatible internet service provider: fees may apply.
10.9 Mavericks is available in the App Store for free.
You can upgrade direct from 10.6.8 to 10.9 Mavericks or without going through 10.7 Lion or10.8 Mountain Lion as long as you have the Late 2008 model 5,1 Aluminum Unibody through the Mid 2010 White Unibody model 7,1.
10.9 Mavericks will require at least 2gb of RAM but really needs 4gb to run smoothly.
As for third party programs see this list for compatibility with 10.7 http://roaringapps.com/apps:table
Also 10.9 Mavericks doesn't run any Power PC programs. To see if you have any Power PC programs go to the Apple in the upper left corner and select About This Mac, then click on More Info. When System Profiler comes up select Applications under Software. Then look under Kind to see if any of your applications are listed as Power PC. Universal and Intel will run under10.9 Mavericks.
Before Mac switched to Intel processors in 2006 they used Power PC processors from 1994 to 2005. Power PC 601 through 604, G3, G4 and G5. Applications written for the Power PC processors need the application called Rosetta to run on Intel processors. This was part of the Operating System in 10.4 and 10.5 but was an optional install in 10.6. With 10.7 Lion Apple dropped all support for Power PC applications.

  • Ive downloaded and installed Adobe Pro XI but can't open it. What do I need to do?

I have downloaded and installed the trial for Adobe Pro XI on my Macbook Pro. Its on my desktop.
I can see it, but when I try to open, all i get is a list of files and the option to EJECT!
What do I need to do to get the program to open? I need to extract data from a PDF into Excel - which looks straightforward enough, if I can ever get the program open!

    Hi Dorothea,
Please ensure that you are logged in to your system as administrator and anti-virus is disabled.
Once you click to download Acrobat trial version, 'Adobe Download Assistant' application will start downloading.
Then, run the application and then sign up with your Adobe ID credentials to download Acrobat pro XI from the available list of products.
Let me know if you still face the problem and share the screenshot of the message.
    Hope to get your response.

  • While doing ODI migration what things are needed to be setup in Topology?

While doing ODI migration what things are needed to be setup in Topology manager ?
1.Like in Toplogy in file we hive file paths.
    2. In Planning we set Logical schema .
    Not sure about other things.
    Hoping some can can help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11

Lots of things are defined in the topology manager - below is a simplified list
    1) Physiccal Schemas the actual connection information / details related to any technology you plan to use in your ODI integration interfaces
    2) Logical schema, abstracted version of the Physical schema which allows greater flexibility ad reuse across environments
    3) Contexts - how you asssociate logical and physical schemas
    4) Agents - manage the execution of ODI jobs
When you talk about migration, do you mean moving ODI objects between seperate environments such as Dev and Prod? If so you will need to ensure that all the technologies you use in Dev are present in Prod. The physical layer has been set up with all the correct connection details. Your logical scemas has been set up matching your configuration in the dev environment and you have used the contexts to associate the logical and physical layers as per your dev configuration.

        Alanf356,
You've reached the right place for help! Once the mobile number is changed, you must activate the new number on your phone. Depending on the model phone you have, you may have to simply reboot your device. If a 3G phone, you may dial *228 (send) and select option number one to activate.
Once completed dial #832 (send) to place a test call and ensure that new number is activated. Let us know if this helps.

iMessage requires data. You need to have an active internet connnection, either wi-fi or cellular. If you are not connected via wi-fi, then you would need a cellular data connection. If you do not have that, then you will not receive the iMessages. Either get the cellular data back, or remain connected to wi-fi, or you will have to disable iMessage and ensure that you have an SMS texting plan with your carrier.

  • Plugged iphone into authorized computer. But iTunes won't let me edit my iphone, what do I need to change?

I've started plugging my iPhone into a different computer at work that is authorized. But the iTunes on this computer won't allow me to edit the playlists. What do I need to change?

If you're running Windows 8.1, this seems to be a common theme, or some variation there of at least. Myself, I can't even back-up on my iPhone 4S which has iOS 7.1.2 and I'm running iTunes 11.3.0.54 and have resorted to purchased the iTunes Match service to ensure that music on my primary desktop PC (which is paired to my iPhone) will be available on both the iPhone and my Windows 8.1 laptop. Regarding backing up of the iPhone, I'm thinking about going to a third party solution until either Apple and/or Microsoft can figure out why Windows 8.1 is having so many problems with the current version of iTunes (as of this writing 11.3.0.54).

  • What do I need to download to sync through icloud?

I am currently using 10.5.8.  What do I need to do to use icloud updates between my macbook and other apple products?

iCloud is part of 10.7 Lion while you're running 10.5 Leopard. First you'll need to upgrade to 10.6 Snow Leoprad.
The 10.6 Snow Leopard DVD is back in the Apple online store. You can now get it for $19.99 without having to phone the store. http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard The App Store which is required to download 10.7 Lion or 10.8 Mountain Lion is part of the 10.6.6 update.
Any program that runs under 10.5 should run under10.6. See this list for compatibility with 10.6: http://snowleopard.wikidot.com/  You might have to upgrade some drivers for printers, etc.... And you will have to install Rosetta if you have any Power PC applications http://www.macobserver.com/tmo/article/snow_leopard_installing_rosetta/
Once you are at 10.6.8 Lion is still available from Apple through the App Store. You will have to call Apple Customer Care 1-800-692-7753 or 1-800-676-2775. to purchase it. Then within 3 days you will get an email with a code which you can use to download Lion from the App Store.  The price is $19.99.
You must have at least a model 2,1 MacBook. Lion will require at least 2gb of RAM but really needs 4gb to run smoothly.
As for third party programs see this list for compatibility with 10.7 http://roaringapps.com/apps:table
