What do I use for antivirus on my new MacBook Pro?

I just got my first macbook pro last month and I'm not sure what I am suppose to use for security.  On my windows machines, I've always used Norton 360... but in looking at the Norton Website, they say their products don't support Lion.

I have had my MacBook Pro for 8 months.  My son is a movie maker and a long time Mac user, beginning in High School and in college.  He is 24 and he talked Mac to me until i had a headache (almost).  I did much research including going to the store and playing with the Pro and the IMac until i realized i love it and bought one.
I have always read how safe Mac's are and there is no need for antivirus software.  It has proven to be true.  So i say all that to say to you don't bother to use antivirus on your Mac.  You don't need it.  Of course if you plan on purposely working to get a virus then...
Be well.

Those look alot like file names and not infection names. I don't find any reference to anything like that on Norton or VirusTotal. Since you said these were Trojans, I would expect to see "Trojan" as part of the infection name.
".jar" files are executable Java applets. The random alpha-numerics would seem to indicate a cache file, likely from a browser with Java enabled. And we all know what ".zip" means.
Worst case is that you had Java enabled in a browser and were infected by one of the late variants of the Flashback Trojan over a year ago or one of a couple of other attacks using the same vulnerability but targetted against a small number of political sympathizers. Much more probable is that thes were Windows only Trojans. Hopefully you have a fully up-to-date OS X, including Java, and have disabled Java in all your browsers by now.

  • Which cable to use for 2 external monitors on MacBook Pro?

    Hy there,
I'm currently using one external monitor on my MacBook Pro via a mini display to VGA cable from apple.
I would like to hook up another (second external monitor) one using also VGA.
After doing some research I've learned that I should use some sort of adaptor cable for this. I'm just wondering if there is any way of getting one of there for a decent price in europe? (decent is sub €100).
    Thanks a lot!

  • I want to use iMovie 6 on my new MacBook Pro running Lion 10.7.5. It won't download. Can I download Snow Leopard instead and use iMovie 6 with that older OS?

I have a MacBook Pro I recently purchased 'cause my old G4 just couldn't output my video films properly. My new MacBook Pro is running 10.7.5 OS Lion. Don't like iMovie 11 and want to use iMovie 6. It won't download on Lion. Could I download Snow Leopard (deleting OS 10.7.5) and use iMovie 6 then? I saw a previous thread that said that could be done.

AppleMan...I have the same iMac you have...i-7 16GB with a SSD....just bought it second hand and it is about 1.5 years old....it was maxed out with upgrades when the original owner bought it.  It was also restored back to factory settings prior to me taking possession.
I am making home movies in iMovie 11....max length 30 minutes or less.  I am totally new to this editing.  I am using HD footgage filmed from my Hero GoPro 3.  I am finding that the movies that I am creating are skipping, staggering, hanging up etc...usually where I had transitions.  I am certain I have enough power and memory in my iMac, so what's the issue?  I read one of your other posts about optimizing each event or clip to 1080p?  Is this what I need to do for every clip I import?  Can I do this for all the clips at once on import?  I also read that I may need to export the movie to quick time for smooth playback??
Any help you can provide would be appreciated!
    Sincerely,
    Matt

  • Something has changed - cannot use remote prointer with my new MacBook Pro

I replaced my 3 year old MacBookPro with a new one 3 weeks ago (late April 2010). I just discovered that my 4 month old remote laser pointer (RemotePoint RF VP4810R and RF wireless from SMK-Interlink - www.smklink.com) will not work with this new system. All it is supposed to do is advance (and go back) slides in Keynote. It works with every older Mac and every PC, but not with the new MacBookPro. I brought the device into the Apple store and it works with all older Macs they had but NONE of the new MacBookPros. Any ideas on what I can do? The store "genius's" blame it on the new chipset - a hypothesis with no solution. It used to be that Apple was plug and play. What is happening? One theory from Interlink is that they new Mac may not be effective in switching to lower speed USB devices. If true, it could affect many other devices.

I have found a temporary solution. Combining ideas from the Apple store guys (it's a chipset problem) and the SMK-Interlink customer service (new MacBookPro may not slow down for the really slow speed USB devices), I attached my combination card reader/USB hub I have to handle my multiple card types from my cameras. I attached the USB cable from the RemotePointer's RF Wireless device to the hub and everything works! So this may not be just a problem with this device, but any simple but slow USB device you plug into the new MacBook Pro. But that's my opinion, an untested theory.

  • Has anyone actually used PS CS6 with the new Macbook pro?

There has been an awful lot of discussion about how the new macbook will work with CS6, mostly talk about the UI, but has anyone used it?  How does it work with the retina display (other than the UI)?  Yes, Adobe is going to make it retina compatible and we don't know if they will charge for the upgrade or not.  But I'd like feedback from someone who is using the new Macbook pro with CS6.
    Thanks!

Thanks.  I have scoured the forums and nobody has used it - or if anyone has, they haven't said squat.  Anyway, I took the plunge, downloaded the app and it is absolutely stunning on my rMBP.  Even though, as you say, it is at the pixel representation I've always had.  I can't wait until the update and full retina representation.
It is fast as blazes, sharp as a tack.  A beautiful thing.  I'll play with it some more to see how it performs.  But so far with some short tests, the rendering is almost instantanious and the colors are brilliant.
    So far, so good.

  • Why I still have to pay for iWork on my new MacBook Pro ?

I bought a new MacBook Pro in last Friday ,25 October. But there is no iWork pre-installed in the system.(ps. The system is OS X 10.9 now) When I try to install iWork from App Store ,,it shows I still have to pay for $19.99 for Numbers. Could u tell what happened and what should I do?

You shouldn't have to pay.  Try these steps to solve your problem - apparently you aren't the only one with this issue:

  • Using my iphone with a new macbook pro?

Hey, I had my laptop stolen recently and just bought a new macbook pro - can anyone tell me how to hook up my iphone to itunes? i've authorised the itunes account but it keeps saying i have to wipe the iphone and start again.. is there a way round this?
    cheers!

    Welcome to the forums!
First, disable auto sync when an ipod/iphone is connected under preferences in itunes. Next, put at least one contact and one event in address book & ical, they can be fake, it doesn't matter. Next, connect your phone, do not sync at this point. Right click the phone in the device pane & select reset warnings. Next, go up to "File", "transfer purchases made on this ipod to this computer". All of your purchased music & apps will be transferred. Music you ripped on your own won't. You'll have to use third party software like "Touchcopy" for that. Use touchcopy first if you want the ripped music, as it will be wiped when you sync. Once all of this is done, you can sync. A popup regarding your contacts & calendars will appear asking to merge or replace. Select merge. Regarding the rest of your data, you can use phoneview to extract that before you sync.

  • What add-ons do I need on my new Macbook Pro?

My MacBook Pro was recently stolen so therefore I will be needing a new one very soon. I just graduated from college with a Digital Filmmaking major and a Marketing minor. I hope to break into the film/tv/commercial industry soon, obviously with an entry level job on the production side. Any advice on hardware/software configurations, or any 'must-haves' for my new MacBook Pro?
(I would just go to an Apple store but the closest one is over three hours away)
This is my first post so please forgive me if there are any flaws.
    Thanks for your time,

  • Hi, I have a late October 2008 Macbook Pro Unibody which I wanted to use my Magma Expressbox card with. I had a Silver Macbook Pro before which this worked fine with but for some reason my newer Macbook Pro does not even recognize the Expresscard slot?

Highly anooying as I can't even use the Express Card slot at all, due to the fact the Macbook doesn't even recognize it exists. Has anyone else had this problem. If so, how was it fixed? I only upgraded my Macbook Pro due to the fact Ineeded a better performance but I still need my Expressbox1 to work with my UAD DSP card. If not the buying the new MAcbook was a total waste of money if the Express Card does not even fundtion on it? Please help!!

Mavericks is no longer available from the App Store, so your choice is Yosemite. One option is to create a new partition (~30- 50 GB), install the new OS, and ‘test drive’ it. If you like/don’t like it it, you can then remove the partition. Do a backup before you do anything. By doing this, if you don’t like it you won't have to go though the revert process.

  • What? No upgrade for those who purchased with MacBook Pro !?!

I purchased Final Cut Express the day MacBookPro was released. I didn't know it would not run on the Intel. I assumed Apple would release free upgrades to all that did this. Or did I miss the memo?
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Sorry, but there are no free upgrades.
When you bought it you should have taken it back for a refund.
It might be worth complaining to Apple and the shop you bought it from - it can do no harm.
However, you have left it rather a long time.
    Ian.

  • What is the best way to protect my new Macbook Pro?

I finally have a shinny new 13" Macbook Pro Rentina and I'm wondering what is the best way to protect it? I am considering either a hard case or a sleeve but which one is the best? This thing is worth more than my car and I can't afford for anything to happen to it! Hard case? Sleeve? Both?

Congratulations on your MBPR! I had the exact same question when I bought mine. I ended up using a hard case and a sleeve. For the case I went with the Kuzy Hard Case and an Incase Deluxe Sleeve. Using a sleeve and case is great and I feel like my Macbook is very well protected and I am no longer scared of breaking it with this setup! Best of luck!

  • Why can't I use iWork '08 in my new MacBook Pro

I have installed iWork '08, but no cursor shows up.  Must I purchase a new iWork for my MacBook Pro?  I really only need the word processor.

You can purchase just Pages using the Mac App Store for $19.99.  There are also other word processors available for OS X.  For example, Libre Office and Neo Office Aqua are free packages each  similar to Office for OS X.  These and others can be found at MacUpdate or CNET Downloads.

  • I can't use my Classic programs on new MacBook Pro Dual Core 1.83

How do I get the MacBook Pro to recognize my Classic programs? I've got a number of Classic programs that worked fine on my G5 Power Mac running Tiger 10.4.4 but they won't run on Tiger 10.4.5 on the MacBook Pro. On my Power Mac it would just open up my Classic OS 9.2 and that would run the programs fine.
    What do I do?
    Thanks.

    Number 8,
Most Apple resellers have a return policy that would take it back subject usually a restocking fee.
I suggest contacting the store in question and let them know of your issue, and that you weren't aware of the limitation of the Intel Macs.
There are still plenty of PowerPC Macs out there. I've written a FAQ about the Migration to Mac OS X here:
