What do the readings on the speed test actually me...
When I carry out a BT speed test, what do the readings actually mean?
Which reading tells me if I am getting anywhere near the 5.5megs my line is supposed to be able to support?
I've just run a broadband choices speed test and that simply states that I am currently achieving download speeds of 473 kbps and upload of 376 kbps, which is really rubbish!

if so then breaking the connection is bad it will make the training phase longer or mess with the results it gives.
in general if theres not to much congestion at your exchange then with an ip profile of 4500 you would be able to get a download rate of 4000kbps which means you could stream 2 hd programs on two seperate systems with no pauses (providign there not wifi connected) and simultaneously browse the web on a thirde device whislt still playing games on a console, if your achievable download rate drops below 1500 then you wont be able to stream a single hd program, if it drops below 1000 then streaming high quality media will have problems and if it goes below 500 then you wont even be able to stream an audio track,
now for the hard part, regardless of what your rate is if the server is busy it wont be able to stream the content to you so pauses are inevitable, however you can often setup a program via iplayer to preload and then start the playback once its almost done (i know nobody likes waiting for things.
however the training phase your normally capped at available download rates and cant get anythign decent untill its over, sicne the training phase determins what speed is the best/ worst for your line sync and that determins what your ip profile or download rate will be, a lot of forced restarts or conection losses can and proably will result in a lot of problems with both sync speed and ip profile.
i didnt say it in the other thread about your setup problems but you would probably be better off gettign a sperate phone line for that problem device.

Right, I'll type it all again. You are right I am on ADSL as is the whole village. This result was obtained from the village school.
As you know, every speed test I have run on the "new" speed tester has returned a download speed in excess of my IP Profile and at times in excess of my downstream speed.
Under the County Councils cost saving, performance enhancing project the school has just had its wireless link replaced with 16 bonded copper pairs. This was projected to provide the school with 8Mbps, 2Mbps below all the other 250 odd in the county. I therefore asked the school to run a speed test to find out what it is actually getting and this was the result.
I thought it would provide a little light relief from what can be a very serious forum.
As I said in my OP I was unsure where to post it but I never expected you to move it ti Infinity, I thought it might be The Lounge. Neith of these are visited so frequently as the Speed/connection forum though.

I am wondering if the data from data speed test apps affects my overall usage from my plan
Yesterday as we were coming home on the highway, i decided to test the connection speed using an app from the google play store. I downloaded it because I had about 11MB or so used that day and decided to use my data. Once it finished downloading and installed I opened it and begun a test. It gave me a 15mb download and 2mb upload result so I did one more test. As I was doing the second test I get an alert about my data limit I set up for the day to pace out the 2GB I have for the month. I went to check my apps and saw I used about 40-50MB since using the data speed test app. Do these tests count against my actual plan?
Yes speed tests count against your cap if as Ann says you;re using them to test you mobile data. I think this where I see people complaining about their caps being exceeded but claim they don't do anything. People don't realize that speed tests are going to use 50 MB and even up to 80 MB of data. You do just 1 speed test in a day and you will use 1.5 GB to 2.5 GB a month. And some people feel the need to do 3, 5, 10 tests a day.

Has anyone had a problem with their imac after the power company--in my case Pepco in Washington DC--installed "smart meters" which read the meter and transmit the data via wireless? I've had trouble and when I move the imac downstair it disappears. Help!

It might, as long as the shield is grounded. Metallic (such as copper) window screen is often sufficient.
As mentioned, it would not hurt to file a complaint. The burden of proper shielding should probably belong to Pepco. Among other things, the FCC frowns upon RF leakage and its interfereing with radio communications. Besides, Pepco probably would not want you to affix a shield around their gear - liability issues, etc.
You could experiment by temporarily hanging a shield-screen on the inside of the wall, behind where the meter transmitter device is located, and see if there is any beneficial change. -

Cisco ASA 5505 performance issues on downloads - data into the ASA from the Internet
I have having serious issues with performance on my ASA 5505s that I am testing with 9.2.3 code.
I stripped the config and removed as much stuff as I could - no VPN etc. and I am ONLY getting about 30-40Mbps downloads from sites but 95Mbps uploads???? Anyone else seeing these problems? If I remove the firewall my PC can hit 300/300Mbps to the same sites using the same switch and cable.
I installed 1Gb of mem on the ASA 5505 but it made no difference. The ASA has a UL IP Security license but I am only using and inside and outside address for these tests, no other ports configured.
Is anyone else seeing this performance problem with the 9.2.3 code? I went to this from 8.2.5 to try to resolve QOS failure bugs that I found in the 8.2.5 code. I did not expect to have a performance hit though and it is only on downloads TO the ASA from the Internet from all speed test sites that I try. Uploading speeds seem fine. No access-lists on my interfaces either...barebones config.
My FIOS and switch interfaces are fine...no errors on any interfaces and the same switch interface hits 300/300Mbps when my laptop is directly attached.
Anyone have a barebones config on their ASA 5505 that flies...I will try it on mine and see if some command somewhere (hidden) is causing the issue. I even cleared the config and started with a clean slate just in case I was missing some command from the older configs that may have impacted performance.After changing the switch with a high end switch my performance increased but I am still not happy with the throughput out of my ASA. I have about 50+ ASAs 5505s and a dozen 5510s. Most remote sites have 5505s. All my sites right now have 8.2.5-51 and I wanted to put 9.2.3 out there to solve issues I have uncovered on the 8.2.5 code with regards to QOS issues.
I get much better results using the Cisco 3750X attached to the FIOS (right around 300/300 with my laptop directly attached to the 3750x bypassing the ASA - my FIOS circuit rating is also 300/300). Going through the ASA to the same test site I get download speeds of 35 to 75. Changes randomly which really bothers me. My uploads speeds are ALWAYS faster then my download speeds. Example - best download I would ever get is 75Mb and my upload would usually hit 95Mb during the same test period.
I may have to live with it but the inconsistency is what really bothers me.
Here is the config I am currently using. Nothing going on during testing since only a single PC is attached. VPN tunnel to the main site can be up or down...doesn't seem to make any difference. PC does to site directly from outside interface of ASA...split tunneling. Even when I removed tunnels and tested with just the ASA as a firewall to the Internet I was still seeing the same inconsistencies.
Anything obviously missing - new command or anything? Xlates causing issues? -
Difference between Transceiver Statistics vs. Speed tests
We had been having problems with our DSL speed today. We discovered (obviously) that most of the problem was that my son was watching Netflix on our TV (through an app directly on the tv, not through a game console), which was sucking up most of our bandwidth.
But, while testing things out, we checked our Transceiver Statistics. We are getting about 3300 mbps download, but after running two different speed tests (speedtest.net and bandwidthplace.net), it seems we only ever really get about 1.5 - 1.6 mbps. This was after turning off the Netflix stream, by the way. This is basically our normal speed.
At any one time, we have 2 laptops and 2 Android phones connected to our network through a Beklin wireless router, as well as a desktop connected to the Belkin router through an ethernet cable. The tests have been consisten regardless of the number of computers running at the time, as long as they aren't doing anything with a real network load.
I don't think it's a problem with the router, because we can copy files between the computers at about 4 megabytes per second (36 megabits per second). Althought the WiFi connection says it's running at about 130 megabits per second. Maybe that's an issue with disk speed, I don't know...
Anyway, is there anything weird going on, or is it a symptom of outside network load that our speed tests are roughly half the value we see on the Transceiver Statistics for the modem?

Go to Solution.The transceiver stats only measure the speed of the connection between your DSL Modem/Router and the Central Office Equipment. You can get the full 3mbs downlink speed with losses a lot higher than 42db I have seen it above 60db and still providing 3mbps.
However the link between your modem and the Central office is only small part of the total path between your computer and whatever internet site you are connecting too. Speed tests measure end to end, as opposed to only a small part of the message path. As a result speed tests almost always show lower performance than transceiver stats.
The best analogy is Verizon effectively only provides the on and off ramps to the Internet Superhighway. Just because the local ramp is clear is no assurance there aren't traffic jams elsewhere on the highway. The problem with most speed tests is you have no idea how your traffic was actually routed, and what constraints may be placed on it by parts of the network that Verizon has no control over.
The transceiver stats represent the best possible case. The reality is there is no shortage of issues upstream from the central office, either on, or off the Verizon network that can restrict your actual speed to considerably less than 3mbps. It is unlikely that your wiring inside the house is an issue, if it was, you would be seeing a downlink speed at less than 3mbps.
However your uplink speed seems slow. The nominal uplink for the 3mbps tier of DSL service is 768kbps, not 512kbps. -
Has anyone done 3G speed tests yet?
I assume all the problems mentioned here will get worked out in short order, but I've seen nothing here comparing 3G speeds to Wifi speeds on these new units.

Thanks--I know some people have been having problems with the 3G but I have been very happy with it so far. Setup took about 30 seconds yesterday. Initial speeds were around 1.8 Mbps download, then later slowed to around 1mbps, likely due to all the demand. Every speed test I ran showed the iPad to be at least 20% faster than my iPhone 3G. Around midnight it began to speed up as people went to bed - at one point I had 3.2mbps download, which is excellent considering AT&Ts max theoretical speed right now is 3.6mbps. I have never had a speed over 2.2mbps on my iPhone.
Today I was using it in the car on a route I often take. One area along the drive is an AT&T dead zone - my iPhone always drops to "No Signal" as do any other AT&T phones. Despite this, my iPad held on to 4 bars and managed a 1mbps speed test in the heart of the dead zone. I also have found the WiFi on the 3G model to be slightly stronger than the wifi only model, presumably due to the plastic top which breaks the aluminum case.
I for one do not have any problem with AT&T restricting some of the video apps. The iphone was the same way and I wasn't expecting the iPad to be any different. All in all I am extremely satisfied with my purchase. -

I ask because i would always have speeds above 750 kbps but now im not getting more than 400kbps after i updated to 2.0.2 . I just wanna double check that my speeds actually did suddenly drop with the update.I am not sure these numbers are good, but I did some tests on my phone with different settings. All bars full on both Wifi, 3G and Edge using Telia here in northern Sweden (using above site):

Wifi Upload: 0.9 Mbps (972 Kbps / 119 kB/s) transferred 512 KB in 4.31 sec.
3G Download: 1.17 Mbps (1177 Kbps / 143 kB/s) transferred 1280 KB in 8.9 sec.
3G Upload: 0.16 Mbps (156 Kbps / 19 kB/s) transferred 512 KB in 26.81 sec.
Edge Download: 0.2 Mbps (199 Kbps / 24 kB/s) transferred 256 KB in 10.5 sec.
Edge Upload: 0.06 Mbps (60 Kbps / 7 kB/s) transferred 256 KB in 34.8 sec.
Maybe the numbers would be different if there were a similar test site in Europe, as I often find any speed tests depends on the physical location of the test server. -

I have an iMac (Mid 2007) upgraded to Lion OS. My fan runs at high speed all the time. I reset the SMT without results. I had no way to do the hardware test.
Can I fix this high fan speed?Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder. Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu. Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order. If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time, then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar. Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process. See if that helps. Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.
If the above doesn't help then create a new user account. Log into the new account. Does this fix the problem? -

The Delete Speed Test for Pages 2
Hello Pages fans,
“Speed” is a subjective term, so I wonder what people will find if they do this test:
Paste a phrase such as “The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog’s back. ” ten times to make a dummy paragraph. Put the cursor at the end of the paragraph and press and hold the delete key and count the seconds it takes to delete back through the the entire paragraph, letter by letter. (This will depend on the key repeat rate you set in System Preferences.)
If I delete a particular paragraph this way using Pages 2, when viewing the document in narrow format (i.e. viewing “fit page”) it takes about 22 seconds. If I view “fit width” and stretch the width across my 23-inch cinema display the same task takes about 101 seconds.
Using Pages 1 it takes about 22 seconds (“fit page”) or about 27 seconds (“fit width”). Not as bad.
I have tried every single fix proposed in this discussion forum to speed up Pages - to no avail. I am using a Mac Mini 1.42 GHz with 1GB RAM, a 23-inch display, 10.4.5 and the very latest updates. I have no other problems whatsoever in any other applications.
Incidentally, In Word 2004 the same exact test takes about 17 seconds no matter what (whether viewed at 10%, 500% or anything in between).
Trust me- I don’t actually sit around deleting paragraphs like this all day, but I do notice a very annoying typing lag. I’ve basically given up on Pages as a serious writing tool because of this typing lag / speed issue and gone back to Word. Pages 1 works fine and served my purposes for a year, but what future does the Pages application have if version 2 performs so poorly?
Do those who report having blazing fast Pages 2 performance experience this problem with this test?
Yes, this is a dreadfully boring test! But at least it’s not subjective and it’s not as iffy as watching the system monitor percentages jumping around.

When I type text while viewing a document at full width across my screen, the typing is much slower than when I view the document tiny size. The typing lags. By "lags" I mean that the keyboard input is behind what I am typing. I devised a mind-numbingly simple little keyboard input test to replicate this problem perfectly. Again: This test directly replicates the type of keyboard input slowdown problem I encounter while doing normal typing. So it's certainly relevant, and it's also measurable and replicable.
Naturally, it's not the actual number of seconds that counts, it's whether any given keyboard input task slows down when we do it viewing at different widths. The keyboard input rate changes, you see.
I had hoped that someone would verify whether they experience the same lag in typing under the same conditions. In other postings, others have simply described the problem as "infuriating" and dropped Pages entirely. I don't think that's very useful. I was trying to be a bit more scientific about it in the hopes that it might actually be helpful.
Maybe there's a better way to accurately demonstrate keyboard input lags in Pages?

I have been working on animating a scene in flash for a few weeks and recently I have encountered a problem with importing my images on to the stage where the images I import do not turn up, however the key frame that I attempted to import the image onto shows that it is occupied by an image and every frame previous to the key frame that just imported an image that does not show turns up as a red square that fills the original perimeters of the image, there is no solution to this problem any where on the forum and the adobe technical support staff will not help me find a solution to this problem what can I do to get Flash running normally again and fix this problem?????

The memory for your Flash file is based on the available memory on your computer.
There is a limit on the number of frames that you can have in any given timeline. I think that it's about 15000 frames, but that's a guess. Flash does all of its work at runtime, this means that no part of your animation is pre-compiled like it is in a video file. So the more objects that you have on the stage, the more work Flash has to do. It follows that the more objects that there are to animate, the more work your processor and the video card have to do.

Thanks - Even though I'm years out of warranty I got chat help from Apple (I said they should help me since the codes aren't published.) We covered three different questions, and although I didn't get a specific decoding of the error code, I got confirmation of what other comments here imply - it might have helped that I indicated I'd already been here - and useful links to how to do back ups, including to CD(s). (I don't have a lot of data on this computer yet)
Now I need to figure out how to decide how hot-to-the-touch is "too hot" for the metal frame at the top of the iMac to decide whether I'm getting adequate fan performance or insufficient. While chatting I initially reported it was cool at the bottom and warm at the top. Apple hadn't asked, but their response prompted me to feel it again, and I'd say the top was hot, not warm - I updated but Apple didn't comment further except to conclude after addressing the other questions that I should take it in for further assessment - don't really want to bother with that.

There seem to be loads of time lapse apps generally but are there any that can import existing footage? I'm making a movie in iMovie and its 4.30 mins long, but I want to shorten a segment so it shows a speeded up segment so the video is 30 seconds.
