What do these settings mean on the 5th gen AE?

Just got my new Airport Extreme (MD031LL/A running Version 7.5.2) setup last night and being an IT guy, I'm always eager to dig into the Advanced menu options to see what tweaks and customizations my toys are capable of.  There are a few questions that I have:
1.  On the advanced controls, what should I set my Multicast Rate to (Low, Medium, High)?  I have searched online but haven't found any good consistent answers about what this does or what the 3 settings actually change.
2.  Is it necessary to check the box for "5GHz Network Name" to get the most from the 5GHz network?  Some sites/forums say that allowing your 5GHz 802.11N devices to be connected to a separate network will result in faster data transfer rates on the LAN for those devices.  I don't really see why that would be the case since, if the device is capable, it will connect at that level, and if not, it won't.
3.  How do you configure the Syslog Destination Address?  When I click on that field to enter a location I just get the "dong" error.
4.  What is the WPA Group Key Timeout?

On former versions of the AP-Extreme there where real values instead of low - medium - high.
It's important for streaming media; e.g. music.
Apple: ""Multicast rate: Choose a multicast rate from the pop-up menu. If you set the
multicast rate high, only clients on the network that are within range and can achieve the speed you set will receive transmissions."" (Manual, Chapter 3, Page 23)

It's not necessary but recommended.
If not set, the connected devices are able to switch the radio band if e.g. the signal fade, and with that use the attached BSSID of that radio band. That could lead to trouble (drop outs) e.g. if you stream music to a AP-Express.
Setting a name for the 5GHz allows you to force the 5GHz capable devices to use that connection only.
For instance, with a 2011 MBPro on the 2.4GHz 802.11n you will have a max connection speed of 150MBit/s and on 5GHz 802.11n 450MBit/s due to MiMo ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MIMO ) with a 150MBit/s for each spatial stream.

Check "Allow SNMP" and enter the IP address of the computer that will receive the logs in the Syslog Destination Address field.

it sets the frequency of encryption key rotation between the stations and the access point (Extreme). See --> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CCMP

What does this message mean? : "The file name "DSC_0088.jpg" is offline or missing."   I am in the process of importing photos from iPhoto (don't really know what I'm doing....) and when I look at one of the imported photos that message pops up.  I know what "DSC_0088.jpg" is.  I don't know what it means that the file is "missing".

    CASpyr,
Thank you so much for your reply.  I have a couple of bigger issues that I am dealing with: too many photos on my laptop: 40,000! (Of course I have to throw away many of them, but that is time consuming). I have a MacBook Pro and have primarily used IPhoto. I have recently purchased 2 external drives and have transferred my photos to those, but I need a basic education about how photos are stored, copied, etc.  I have recently been told that iPhoto only shows and deals with jpegs, not RAW.  About 1/3 of my photos are RAW, so I purchased Lightroom, so I could do more with those RAW photos.  I have been told by my local Mac store that I need to delete most of my photos from iPhoto, because it's causing problems.  I am reluctant to do so until I am sure that all of the keywords, descriptions and editing I have done to these photos is not lost when deleted from iPhoto. I just watched a tutorial about importing to Lightroom and got out of it that I needed to copy photos from iPhoto to a file on my desktop and then copy to Lightroom.  I did that, it seemed to work.  Then (because of my storage/memory issues) I deleted the photos (just a few as an experiment) from that desktop file.  I'm guessing that is why Lightroom doesn't recognize the the photos.  It seems that (learned from another tutorial) that one uses "Add" , Lightroom is only connecting to the source of the photo, not  actually copying it to the program.  Sounds like I need to use the "Move" feature instead.  My ultimate goal is to store the photos on the 2 external drives and eliminate most of them from my lapop.  So my basic questions have to do with what data (metadata??) is copied from iPhoto to an external drive (RAW???) and what isn't copied. Basic understanding issues, obviously….  I hope this isn't too much to ask.  If you can recommend a book or resource that can explain those basic issues to me I'd appreciate it.  I just got back from a trip and I can't download my new photos until I manage the rest!
    Thanks,
    Nancy

  • What are these settings about?

In the editor workspace immediately below the photo you are working, on is a drop down tap which can display documents profile, documents dimensions, sizes, scratch sizes, timing etc. What are these settings all about I didn't see them mentioned in the manual? And then over to the left a area where it shows percentage. Percentage of what?
    I'm using PSE5

This information is present in the help files.
Just open the help for PSE 5, and type the word 'status' in 'Search for' input for the product.
This will lead you to 'To display file information in the Info palette or status bar' page. It contains the answer to your query.
The percentage is to specify the Zoom percentage of your image.

    No.
Apple will only give you a 10% recycling discount if you turn in an old iPod when you purchase a new one.

What does a '0' mean on the home screen where the 3G icon usually is?

That's the icon for GPRS, no EDGE. You have three available data-modes on all 3G-enabled iPhones (3G, 3Gs and 4): The little circle or o for GPRS, the E for Edge and the 3G for UMTS. No icon at all means no data-transfer (no MMS, no Visual Voicemail, no Internet and so on).

  • TS1368 Done all of the above...everything is in order, still cannot connect to the store.  I have the 5th gen iPod and $50 iTunes gift card.  I am going to return both of these items it I cannot find a fix for this.

Make sure that you can access the Internet on your computer or device.
Make sure that your computer meets the iTunes minimum system requirements.
Make sure that your operating system is up-to-date:
Done all of the above...everything is in order, still cannot connect to the store.  I have the 5th gen iPod and $50 iTunes gift card that I cannot use(been trying now for 6 days).  I am going to return both of these items if I cannot find a fix for this.

When I called Apple (after wating 42 min. for a live person) I was told to run the APPLE Software Update and turn off location services then restart my computer.  There were no available updates. The iPod touch I got on Christmas day.  The iTunes app was downloaded the same day.  Since day 1 I have not been able to connect.  I also followed lllaass's advice and followed instructions on the following 2 websites.
    http://www.idownloadblog.com/2012/09/20/fix-for-cannot-connect-error/
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PIUitRyZS6U
    After restarting my computer:
From the iTunes app I click on the 'iTunes Store'
A new window opens and I get the following message:
This Apple ID has not yet veen used with the iTunes Store.
    Please review your account information
So I click on 'Review' and am taken to a crude screen that says
    Welcome to the iTunes Store
With an Apple ID, you can download the latest music, videos, and more.
To begin creating your Apple ID, click Continue.
    So I click on 'Continue'
    A pop up window says:
We could not complete your iTunes Store request. An unknown error occurred (-1202).
There was an error in the iTunes Store.  Please try again later.
And the only option I am left with is to click 'OK'
After every fix this same scenerio just loops and loops and loops

What does 'search domains' mean in the IP address

This is the notation which mentions that the parameter is applied to all the instances if you are using a RAC database. Instead of * , you can also mentiona particular instance's SID as well if you want the parameter to work only for that instance.

  • Bring back the 5th gen.

Honestly, I didn't know where to put this.
But I really dislike the new iPod nanos.
And I can't find any of the 5th gen.
    So I say to Apple:
Please bring back the 5th gen nanos!

Or you could buy the iPad, that has a way, way bigger screen.
Going to be really tough to put controls on that size screen and still be able to see what is happening. Could make game play really challenging.
Yes, Apple did make a big deal out of the video capability, but in the final analysis they could not keep pace with Flip and I doubt anybody actually bought a 5th Generation Nano because it had less than mediocre video capabilities. I use the video on mine about 3 times. Nice novelty.
Glad you think the 5th Generation was the epitome of the Nano, and you can buy from Amazon, or buy refurbished. At least while they are still available. I thought the most recent iteration of the Thunderbird was a nice car. Apparently not enough people agreed with me. I also thought the Adventures of Briscoe County was a great show. Fox? Not so much, nor did it have any ratings.
I like working out with my 6th Generation Nano, it is small, I can see the screen to change playlists rather than use VoiceOver, I can check the time, I can set timers. Hard to do all of these things with the Shuffle (although I actually run with my Shuffle instead). Honestly, the 6th Generation is far superior to the Shuffle when working out at the gym. I'm guessing you don't work out much. Honestly, it is much better and is just how things should be in my opinion.
Ever here of a thing called supply and demand? Ever collect anything? Ever buy artwork? Once an item is no longer available and there is a demand for it then it will sell at above list price. You can buy the refurbished ones for less than the new 5th Generation Nano and they are just as good, if not superior to, the new ones.
But in the end who knows. Apple went back to the 2nd Generation Shuffle design with the 4th Generation so maybe you will get your wish with the 7th Generation Nano. Wait until September.

  • Should I wait for the 5th gen iPod Touch or keep my 64Gb 4th gen and not return it?

Bought a 32Gb iPod Touch and while it was being shipped I realized I'm going to need the 64Gb's if I plan on removing the music off of my 64Gb iPhone and putting it on the iPod and using my iPod as my music source. So I took it ot the Apple store last night and swapped it for the 64Gb. Well I got to thinking, this thing is just over a year old - a new one HAS to be on its way in the near future, right? Certainly they wouldn't go a full two years to refresh the iPod's with the A5 chips that have been out almost a year already. If they were to go with another September launch for the iPod but next year the A5 chip is almost irrelevant by then, A6 will be in the iPad 2S/3, A6 will be in the next iPhone ----- and then the old A5 would just be dropped into the iPod? Just doesn't make logical sense to me. I believe an iPod refreshment will be launched fairly soon, maybe a long side the next iPad release? What do you guys think? The way I'm just seeing it is that I don't really need the iPod right now, so that $400 credit could be used for even double the space the 64Gb has for the same price when the 5th gen launches? And whatever other bells & whistles the 5th gen will offer. I'd feel stupid for paying the $400 knowing I don't need it quite yet and that a refreshment could possibly be on the way soon. Thoughts?

It is all up to you.  I have not heard any announcement from Apple about a 5G iPod touch.  SInce you do not "need" then wait.

  • How is the 5th Gen iPod better then....

How is the 5th Gen iPod better then the 4th Gen iPod, other then the obvious video ability? Is it really that much better while playing songs? Is it built well? How do you like it?

I do not own a 4G iPod but I can ad that I don't think there is anything better about the audio quality in the 5G
iPod as compared to the 1G iPod. What you get are new features and of course capacity and cosmetic appearance. I am an owner of a 1G iPod that is still going strong, no issues with it ever! I recently purchased the 5G and already have questions regarding shut down and pausing and battery life!
    Peace
