What do you choose 16:9 or 4:3

Between the two choices, 16:9 widescreen and 4:3 regular, which aspect ratio do you choose when creating a movie in imovie and why?
I would appreciate feedback as it will help determine what I will do for a dvd I am making for someone else. I do not know what kind of tv they have or if they will be viewing it on a computer.
Thank you!
SJB

16:9
have a 'widescreen' tube for >10 years. widescreen is 'natural' viewing, most 'action' is acting horizontal, most landscapes are horizontal orientated ...
any DVDplayer allows to add black-bars for playback of 16:9 on 4:3 displays (=letterboxing) ..
so, I don't care, what kind of display is in use for delivery.

If for some reason that I can't be bothered to think of, you were only allowed to keep one device or gadget, what would it be? For the purposes of this I'm not including wi-fi routers or hubs, you get to keep them, so the internet is still available.  For me, I think it would be my Kindle. Yes, I would miss my Chromebook, but there was a long time in my life where I lived without the 'net. Besides, I can still access it on my Kindle but I wouldn't want to do our monthly grocery shop on it as it's one of the original Kindles with the keyboard, so not the best for the 'net.  I would definitely miss the TV of course, but if I was given a choice between books & TV I would always choose books.  I would also miss our breadmaker as it makes awesome bread & jam. So, have a good think about all your gadgets around the house, from the rechargable vacuum cleaner to the ipad, & make a decision. Please make it interesting by giving reasons. Thanks.

Hi Merv60, Without going into it too much, the Radio gets my vote as it has proved a lifeline to everyone around the World, but has provided information and entertainment to us who are not necessarily the biggest fans of the telly. ...Intersting that most fans of the Radio, are great readers of various books and literature (for me it is non-fiction) and it provides the necessary ( backgroung sound" when needed...

  • What would you choose: Zen or Zen Tou

    Which is better and why?
The Zen 20GB Mp3 player, or the Zen Touch 20GB with remote control?
The Zen is a later model, and a little more expensi've too. But is the firmware (the software of the mp3 player) of the Zen the same as the Zen touch, or is it better? And what does it offer that the Zen Touch doesn't?
    Hmm..

It's really down to you which you prefer. I think the Zen 20Gb is a little smaller at least in plan, although a touch thicker.
The Zen 20 Gb has one or two extra functions, but the Zen Touch has MTP firmware (that allows access to subscription music).

  • AIRPORT vs. All Others? YOU CHOOSE!

    Hi Guys,
Thanks for taking the time to read this and for your help. I appreciate it.
I am finally going to make the move to a wireless connection. I truly need to maintain my speed, and security.
    I have a G5, and a G4 - 400.
I wanted to know which wireless routers you all would vote on, if you had to purchase one.
    Here's the conditions.
3 year old, 3 level home. Small. Main computer (G5) will be in basement (1st level, - need to get air port card.) Family computer (G4 - 400) on 3rd level (has air port card). Both computers are near stairway which connects all levels. Computers are no more than 15 feet away from stairway. Would like to use computer in back yard, but this is not a priority to me. Main priority is to allow both computers to use iSight for video conferencing and 30MB+ file sharing.
I was thinking about using an airport with an omni antenna. However I've seen other wireless routers out there with a larger coverage than apple's.
What would you choose and why? Budget limit is $300. Will purchase from ebay if need be.
    Thanks
PS> Don't throw tomatoes at me... I am a newbie to wireless, but a pro at the mac.

The WRT54G is currently the standard by which all commerical wireless routers are judged. It generally gives the best range and speed. It supports WPA (a very secure encryption method), and many 3rd party "signal boosters", such as high-gain antennas, access points (AP), and the like. It's also very affordable. Most wireless routers are.
I would set up the network like this, but it might be too difficult for some. There are two ways I would do it.
I would have the router in the 2nd floor, in a central location. I would run an ethernet cable down into the 1st floor and hardwire the G5. Then I'd let the G4 run wirelessly. The other option is to get a regular hard-wired router and put that in the 1st floor. Then run an ethernet cable up to the 2nd floor and set up a wireless AP somewhere on the 2nd or 3rd floor.
The advantages of the first option are that you have less hardware to get. The advantages of the second are that you can get several APs that will act as a web of sorts and blanket a far wider area with coverage, and make it much more reliable too (example, Linksys WAP54G).
So there you go. I always suggest hardwiring computers whenever possible, and use wireless as a novelty. Ethernet is a fail-safe, as it will always work. Wireless is not always suited to every environment.

Please explain the circumstances.     You have either bought something you now regret or you have been charged an authorisation fee which will actually never be activated.

I have noticed an issue with utilizing the “stream” function on iOS 7. If you choose to just stream the movie by hitting the play button it seems to actually start downloading (which is fine) but if you are say halfway thru the movie and stop you can clearly see that storage has been reduced under the usage, yet under the “videos” tab it still states “No Data” the only way to delete what you have partially downloaded is to fully download the video, which is fine but there is no way to tell what videos have been partially downloaded (I.e which occurs a lot when your child switches between movies using the so called “stream” function). This becomes troublesome once the capacity of the ipad is almost met and you have no way to delete this data since you may have several videos that have started to be viewed (hence partially downloaded). Apple needs to somehow make it truly streaming or provide an update so the storage can be managed. The only way I have been able to remove partially downloaded videos is by doing a total software restore. (The video data that is in question when connected to my MacBook shows up in iTunes as “other”) if you have any insight into this issue it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

IMO opendns is either doing this on purpose (unlikely) or they're under some sort of attack/being used to attack the specific torrent sites although I'm open to other explanations. I believe using the automatic setting for DNS is using my own ISP's DNS servers (which again, work fine... but still...)
I'd rather not use Google's public DNS servers as Google is to commercial these days and I think there's potential privacy issues.

Without more information, speculation is a waste of time.  At the least tell us what you do, what the results are, and how that result differs from your expectation.  Then tell us what steps you have taken to resolve the issue, and what the results of taking those steps was.
once you choose repair does it give you an indication it is working?

  • Compressor speed depends on the codec you choose

Hi, add my cent to speed and quality issues.
Compressor speed depends on the codec you choose, Animation it's incredibly sloooow...that's not happening in QT MPEG2 export.
ah... tip: if software update blown away your QT MPEG2 export, reinstalling DVD Studio pro 3 the function is restored)
I don't know why they have thrown away MPEG2 export, introducing FCP Studio Pro and QT7, forcing use of buggy Compressor, though.
Trying to compress Animation files, Compressor hangs and takes time to refresh the preview window, at every change of pameters it needs an unusual looong time to go further.
That's not happening with all the other codecs.
DV, Uncompressed 8 or 10bit are fast as they expected to be,
if you keep an eye at CPU usage, when compressing Animation files it doesn't go up 15% agaist 50% or more with other codecs (in my Quad).
I don't know what's the matter here, surely a bug, but the problem is big because Animation was the most used codec for graphics and i have a lot of motion menus in that format, to encode.
A workaround is to convert all those file in Uncompressed 8 or 10bit (big storage required...) then batch compress all and maybe i'll be able to do the job faster than go straight from Animation to MPEG2 through endless compression time in Compressor.
I could use QT MPEG Export but loosing some functionality.
So do not use Animation for graphics!
That said about speed, what about quality...what's that pulsing halo and noise introduced in MPEG files?
I noticed it happens every GOP, pulsing halo and noise and is present in QTMPEG2 export too.
We all complain Compressor but the fault is not only in there but in QT itself and QTMPEGExport.component.
Come on Apple your defness is screming loud, developer team can't take all that time to correct those bugs!

Yes, of course tweaking is possible.
Opening ports will probably not increase your bandwidth, merely diminish the security you seek, from your first statement in first msg.
Horrible wireless speeds? That's because you're on that 'b' speed (11Mbps?) router...but you knew that.
Get a real router, a Linksys/Belkin/Dlink. Beware of the hype surrounding 108mbps, or turbo. 1 WAN port, 4 ethernet ports, wireless "G".
And remember with your cable ISP, you have very few speed numbers that will be certain. When the neighbors are all downloading the whole season of "Lost" for their iPods...your download speed will feel slower. Upload speed looks like it might always be a fraction of your DL speed.
    (get used to it).
The fact is, you may already "taking full advantage of your broadband".

  • What do you use to burn dvd movies?

I am using toast titanium but it is really slow. I dont like iDVD because I dont want menus. What do you guys use that is faster than toast and popcorn?

The file size of the AVI doesn't matter. It is the length of the movie and the type of source files that affect MPEG 2 encoding time. I'd expect less than 3 hours of encoding per hour of video with your G5. If your source files are high definition then the encoding time takes much longer because the resolution also has to be rescaled to 720 x 480.
One thing that may speed things up is to choose Better instead of Best as the encoder quality. It's possible that Best turns on the Half-Pel feature which basically doubles the encoding time. If you have video with lots of action then Half-Pel makes a difference but most video will look comparably good at the Better or Best settings.

  • Milo: "The settings you choose in Save Adobe PDF dialog...

Something has changed in CS4 for me on my XP based PC.
When I try to save a PSD as a PDF now, I get a box that pops up with the message
"The settings you choose in Save Adobe PDF dialog can override your current settings in the Save As dialog box".
    "OK" is the only option.
But beyond the fact that I don't know why this comes up and that I'm taken to another screen with the title "Save Adobe PDF"
where I have to click  "Save PDF", one of two things then happens:
    1)  I click Save PDF and no PDF is created in the folder OR
    2)  I click Save PDF, the PDF IS created, but my PSD goes away and I'm being show the .pdf file in Photoshop.
Hoping someone recognizes what could be behind all this.
In your response, please remember that I'm not all that much of a tech-y and my system knowledge isn't deep.
    Thank you so much!

***You chose File --> Save As... instead of Save Copy. Normal behavior - the PDF becomes your working file,
*** but if you ever saved your original PSD, it will still be there.
I've pasted a number of screen prints at http://www.improventures.com/temp/temp2.htm including one showing
that my version (11.0) of CS4 does not have a Save Copy option.  But I've been using Photoshop CS2 and CS4 for years
and I don't think I've ever had to do more than say "Save As..." and choose PDF to make a copy of the current
PSD as a PDF without leaving the PSD.  It certainly works that way for .jpg, making a copy without leaving the
original PSD!  But I guess it's possible that I've done this infrequently enough that I have that wrong...but it still doesn't
explain why I'm being taken to the "Save Adobe PDF" screen instead of the "Save As..." like I had been.
Or why I'm missing the Save Copy option you mention.
****Your PDF options have a conflict somewhere, so no file is saved. Hard to tell  without seeing your settings.
I've pasted a BUNCH of those setting on the webpage above, hoping to help diagnose this because I'm sure stumped.  Though I may have found it...I have a feeling one cannot create a PDF from a multi-layered PSD.  When I saved a copy and flattened it, that version created the PDF correctly!
*** As for the warnings - normal and "good software design" Simply have them not  show again by clicking the checkbox, if they are annoying you...
oh, now, I may not be tech-y, but that much I knew.  :-)  he he.   It's not the fact that it's telling me this that's the problem.  It's the fact that either I should only be taken to the Save As screen or that I think I have something "off" in my PDF settings, as you say.
    Thanks, Myl!

    Hi,
these are the original specs. your T40 left the factory with:
    ThinkPad T40 (2374-BG9)
    Based on 2374-8CU: P M 1.5GHz, 512MB RAM, 40GB 5400rpm HDD, 14.1 XGA(1024x768) TFT LCD, 32MB ATI Radeon 7500, 24x-8x DVD(slim), Modem(CDC), Ethernet(LOM), Wireless upgradeable, Secure Chip(TCPA), UltraNav, 6 cell battery, WinXP Pro
"Wireless upgradeable" usually means that your T40 did not leave the factory with a wireless card installed. However, I.B.M. used this marketing term to indicate the model has the wireless antennae installed in the lid of the LCD assembly and can easily have a mini-PCI wireless card added. I have opened up dozens of T40's (including, I believe, some listed as "wireless upgradeable") and I have never found one which did not have an internal wireless card installed. It seems most of these units were upgraded with a wireless card at some point in their history. I also have a theory that many of these "wireless upgradeable" units were purchased in bulk and had mass installations of wireless cards by a secondary party/ technicians before being sold on the final retail market. That's just a theory of mine.
The T40's came with the following three wireless 'B' cards:
ThinkPad Dual-Band 11a/b Wi-Fi Wireless Mini PCI Adapter
    Cisco Aironet Wireless 802.11b
Intel PRO/Wireless LAN 2100 3B Mini PCI adapter
These are the official names designated in System service parts - ThinkPad T40, T40p, T41, T41p, T42, T42p. These were all wireless 'B' adapters, but T40 can easily be upgraded to some of the wireless 'G' cards you see listed for the T42.
There is only one way to know for sure which (if any) wireless card your T40 has. You will have to remove the keyboard and take a look under the hood. Follow the steps in the Hardware Maintenance Manual - ThinkPad T40, T40p, T41, T41p, T42, T42p. Then we can help you locate the appropriate drivers.
Here are some movies with step-by-step instructions which can help you and others who may be reading:

As for audio, make sure you are first updated to Service Pack 3. Allow Windows to do other preliminary updates and it should then inform you that Service Pack 3 is ready for download. After installing SP3, you will be able to install audio drivers successfully. See my post here for a few additional hints: http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/T61-and-prior-T-series-ThinkPad/T60-no-sound-after-reinstalling-XP-sp2/m...
If Windows updates is taking forever to give you the option to install SP3, here is an official Microsoft link where you can directly download SP3. (Many people don't know about this link :http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=24). Just keep in mind, however, that you should have a stable XP SP2 setup before installing SP3 as it makes many registry changes and configurations and can lead to blue screens or cause your system to hang upon reboot if not installed properly. (I am speaking from experience LOL ). Also, make sure you have a stable hard drive before installing SP3 as it gives your hard drive a major workout. If your hard drive is corrupted or has just a few KB of bad sectors, this can lead to your system hanging when you try to restart after installation. SP3 will write important data to bad sections of the hard drive, then fail to re-start successfully and it will be a big headache. Therefore, you should run Chkdsk several times to attempt to close off any bad drive sectors before attempting to install SP3. SP2 is quite merciful and installs in a breeze, but SP3 can be treacherous. I mention this because you told us above that your hard drive has previously crashed.
Have a great day. (I do not work for Lenovo)

  • What direction to choose after getting ocp

    Hello, guys
I am thinking about next step in my education. What course to choose among Oracle products?
I have OCP 11g already and had course in performance tuning.
Can someone give me advice what Oracle product to learn next? I must say that our organization's budget is limited, so I can choose any of 1 week Oracle courses.
I consider Oracle RAC (however, its not used widely in our country), WebLogic, Application server or SOA Suite.
The main criterias are a product's popularity and it should have perspective for the next several years
    Any help would be appreciated.

You are lucky that your organization is paying for courses !
If you want to continue being a database administrator, RAC would be the direction (the 11gR2 Accelerated Grid and RAC course is the most expensive course I've seen).  However, if you are also supporting other products -- e.g. WebLogic is popular -- you'd do a course in that product.  If you perceive being an EBusiness Suite administrator, you'd consider a course in EBusiness Suite or Fusion Applications administration.
