What do you guys suggest I do?

I just receieved a call from my local Apple store in regard to my Ultimate MBP arrival (2.16 + 7200RPM). But at the same time my online order is also arriving on Monday the latest (I might be able to pick it up at local Fedex location on Saturday). Now my dilemma is that, I was told by the Apple store manager that online order especially 2.16 can not be exchange at the store due to a different serial number. Where, online order would have a serial number with CTO on it, while store order does not.
So, my question is, should I get the unit from the Apple store for any exchange/return convenience if there is any problem with my unit AND return the online order? If I return the online order, I believe there is a restocking fee? What if it's never opened?
OR, should I just keep my online order and forget the Apple store unit.
Also, the manager also suggested me to purchase the Apple store unit and leave it unopen, and if there is any problem with my online order, perhaps I can return it (I believe I can with CTO order)?
Thanks

My understanding is that CTOs are NOT returnable - period. If defective - that unit will be repaired. There may be some additional consideration given the new model introductions - the operative word is MAY.
My best guess is that you own the on-line order. You might refuse delivery and plead your case to Apple but.........?
In reverse roles I would probably accept the on-line order - if it works great. If not, I'd plead for a full refund and try to find one from another source.
Good luck - I've already returned my MBP and will be returning a defective intel Mac mini in the morning.

  • What do you guys suggest for playing guitar thru my Macbook Air? I use guitar pro software to learn tabs but I would like to be able to play along thru the computer. thanks

I used to play my guitar thru my PC using a line 6 Guitar port, Then I could play along with Guitar Pro tabs or MP3's. Now I have the Guitar Pro software on my Mac Air and I neeed an interface (which I can get at the Appple store- guitar plug to USB) but I neeed a suggestion for what software to run as an amp simulator, maybe line 6 is the best or maybe there are others I should check out. I know there are guitar "apps" for Ipads etc but this is a Mac. BTW I did not like the guitar sounds produced by Garageband. Thanks

I'm using GJABB with Logic Express 7.2.3 and have no problems.
However, I haven't started messing around with the modulation wheel yet which is pretty important in this libary since it controls volume. The sounds are great, though. I've just raised the mod wheel on each track to get the basic arrangement done, then I'll try the mod wheel for expression.
One thing about this library is that it pretty much forces you to do single horn lines since each patch is monophonic (like the real instrument). It does produce pretty nice results that way. I haven't tried upping the polyphony as I like the results this way.

What were you guys thinking or not thinking?
We recieved the new guid update it terrible. it's a pail blue with white text, a smaller text size , and it stayson screen for 3 seconds you couldn't read it if you could see it w/the white on light color. do you guys ever look at demmographics the largest sement of population are baby boomers , hello has anyone heard of age related blindness or at least decline. the old info bar stayed on longer so you had a chance to read it and the font size was large enough, and color contrast allowed me  to read from the next room  now you have to be on top of the tv. and keep hitting the button to read it. are you guys trying to give people another reason to leave if so you're doing a darn good job!

I agree 100%. This is absolutely ridiculous. Bring back the old format, if this is the best you can do. This extremely difficult to read.

  • Takes SO LONG to re-render when editing - What do you guys do?

Tonight I was working on a minute-and-a-half promotion video for a NewSong concert I am promoting this coming weekend.
I used LiveType for all my text... Say I have a ten second LiveType file that I am using. I decide I want to change something - I click "open in editor" and whala, LiveType opens and I make my change, click save, go back to FCP and the change is made.
However, even with dynamic rendering on, it is still nearly impossible to see just how exact one's timings are etc. so I have to render the LiveType section of the sequence. Sometimes this can take up to 20 minutes, but usually around 6-10 minutes. Still, that is a lot of time for me to sit back and watch my computer work.
What do you guys do to speed up your project creation time as it relates to rendering and being able to see how your timing of edits look etc.
I look forward to hearing from you.

  • Want to install dual cpu need a new bios? what fo you guys recomend?

i tried an online update on another comp a couple years ago....didn't work      had to order a new bios chip   lol
so on this board i want to use ur bios update system and update this system to a bios that is overclock friendly for amd 3800+ x2
    what do you guys recommend?
fyi it is a gaming comp, risk is no factor, i have separate desktop and laptop for work

Quote from: Henry on 04-January-10, 15:05:40
Is the single core a 3800+ or something else? If it is a 3800+ then you must take into consideration that the single core stock speed is 2.4GHz and a 300MHz isn't that much of an OC for it. X2 3800+ on the other hand is 2.0GHz and 2.7GHz is 700MHz OC, a much larger difference and harder to accomplish than on a single core. In fact there were plenty of people with an X2 4200+ 2.4GHz that could barely reach 2.7GHz stable. Tell him about it Jeff.
Oh my yes...the opty 180 (dual core 2.4 GHz) I had frustrated me to no end.  Very good chip mind you.  Great memory controller...in fact ran 4 gigs very well, but couldn't push past 2.7 with any stability at all.  Honestly, I finally gave in and backed it down to around 2.5.  Not very exciting, and I tried for weeks and weeks in every configuration imaginable.  Annoyed the heck out of these guys...I am sure.  But they were patient and I was and am grateful for what I learned.  Put an Opty 185(dual core 2.6 GHz) and pushed 3.0 GHz and more on stock voltages and still held onto the 4 gigs...even though the board because of the stress the 4 gigs puts on the memory controller, natively underclocks the ddr400 to 333 it runs 24/7 prime95 stable at ddr374.  Very good memory controller in this Opteron 185.  It just depends on you, the chip, and the luck of the draw.
Sadistic of you Henry to laugh at my trials and tribulations and, I might add, parade them for the enjoyment of all.

  • What Would You Guys Do?

I make this summer video type thing for my friends and family every year. This year I wanted to have something at the beginning to really make it cool so this is what I was thinking... I wanted to do a 1 shot opening set in high speed from getting up in the morning to getting to the lake we always go to... The difficult part of this is that I want to have the credits of the people who are in the movie appear on objects as I drive on the street like you see the street signs say a persons name with there picture, or I pick up a soda can and its not the brand name on there its a persons name and picture. So my basic question is how would you guys do this? I assume shake would be the best program for placing the text and pictures on the objects and making them look real, I'm just not as good with shake as I am with Final Cut Studio 2. I have only had shake for a little while now , and dont really know what the best way to do this would be.
Also i am using a camera that records on mini dv tape just so you guys know, I have heard some people say that changes the way you work with shake a bit.

Hmm I would suggest key framing a corner pin. Or if you want better results use tracking. Take a text node in the image section and then add a corner pin which is in the transform section. To keyframe it press the button with the key on it under the video. Once your done get and over node and put the text in the first input and the video in the second. If you look in the tutorial pdf you go with shake it will tell you how to do this with a tutorial replacing a bus sign. Hope that helped.

  • UBER ANGERY TECHNICIAN..... WHAT ARE YOU GUYS THINKING!!!

Hi I've been in the business of end-user repair, training and servicing for about 20 years.  I've owned computers from every major manufacture on the market and I've repaired computers from every single manufacture on the market.  This will be the second time in my life that I've actualy taken the time to register and post to a manufacturer forum....
Today I serviced an IBM Lenovo PC Model#41V9706 Like any intelligent technician I backed up all the customers irreplaceable data prior to beginning, and was informed that the customer had NO disks to speak of for their system.  At first I thought, "ahh, common customer disguarding their important disks... As usual, But then I looked at his face and realized he was  65 and rich... Any way I found the restore application on the hard drive, ran it and created a boot disk.  I then proceeded to try to restore from the backups on the drive.  Didn't work (Great job btw on making good working backups....)  Finally I did a manufacture restore and the @#$@ing thing deleted the entire drive BEFORE it told me that I needed more disks to do the manufacture restore.  Are you guys out of your mind creating a program that is so backward that it doesn't even tell you that with out the disks it leaves the system completely useless?  As of yet all of the lenovo software is now gone, I've had to install a fresh and blank copy of windows using the customers install key and NOW I can't even get their factory software back onto the system because a copy of it doesn't appear to exist.
I'm sorry to be so frank but what the heck kind of restore program deletes all the backups before it tells you it can't help you?!  Even windows doesn't do that.  If I am ever to recommend or endorse another IBM product it will need to show some intelligence in it's design and include fail-safes or at least some kind of warning system to let people know that it is completely useless before it deletes data.  I am in the process of contacting customer service about this but I am not hopeful as my experience shows that for a small fee of $49.99 I might have the software replaced... What a royal piece of crap.
Your backup product receives a lousy 2 in my book your only redeeming qualities are it's ease of use and it's ability to work when windows doesn't.
    Jess

call lenovo 800 in your country to get the original software disk and drivers, if you are in warranty time you get no fee to paid, and is 3 to 5 days to receive the disks

  • What IDE you guys can recommend?

I basically use this programming enviornment: JDK+Emacs+Other shell tools.
It works very fine and productive to me.
However, I would like to try some IDE now since at this moment, I need to do a lot of things on visual looking. I think IDE might help. I used to use JBuilder, NetBeen, etc. So, I got SunOne and tried it. But, I was very disappointed. Looks like all old NetBeen's visual edition funtionalities are gone. But, there are much much more things piled into. I think, this is not good at all. Why would someone interested in visual GUI development care about Servelt and Server? It does not make sense to jamp all these into one.
So, what IDE can you guys recommend? I basically want to have a Visual Basic IDE like tools to do visual GUI things. I still want to do other things by my old way: JDK+Emacs+Other shell+Ant (Thanks for Cygwin, it works very well in Windows also). I am no fun of Microsoft. But, I have to say, its Visual Basic IDE is very good, though Visual Basic is a total joke.
    What can you tell me?

Yes. IDEs all have these problems. But, sometimes, it is much easier to use IDEs. At now, my application is ready. But, I need to polish it so that visually it looks great. To do so, I have a tons of small things need to be done. To do these small things, it is very hard in not visual approach. I hope I can find a good IDE so that I can just import my working jars and edit the visual lookings. Just change size, fonts, color, background, ... Hopefully, IDE will not change my codes too much so that I can still have good handle on all codes.
I think used the NetBean just can do this job. But now SunOne is so fancy and it can't do these things well any more. Too bad, isn't it?
By the way, seems the recommended IDE from IntelliJ does not work for my case.

  • What do you guys use for scratch disks on iMac?

We're about to upgrade to new iMacs / Mac Pros and I'm wondering what you guys use for your second scratch disk? Thunderbolt dock? Thunderbolt G-Raid?
Has anyone successfully made their global scratch disk their fibre connected shared storage (Terrablock) and not had Premiere behave strangely? That would be the best option I think, but found that Premiere froze up a lot more when we did.

I have a pair of 4-bay Pegasus Thunderbolt 2 enclosures attached to my Mac Pro, and one of the volumes in one of the enclosures is my scratch space.

  • What are you guys monitoring thru?

I have logic 7 running on my dual gig G4 at my recording studio with a motu 2408mk II, adat hd24 goin into a yamaha 02r. I'm comeing to the conclusion that I may not need the 02r especially if I get to the point wher I'm doing everything in L7. Seems I would just need something to monitor thru and something to control L7. How are some of you guys monitoring Logic 7 ? I would love to get comments to give me some ideas on which way to move forward.
    Thanks in advance
    RD

I run Logic through Lavry 4496 "Blue" converters, as well as an RME Fireface (both set up as an Aggregate Device) to a Personus Central Station.
The Central Station acts like the monitor section of a console, which gives me a talkback to the studio, multiple speaker selectors, as well as a few other bells and whistles, such as Dim, Mute, and a volume knob.
The Lavry's act as my inputs and outputs to the Studio, while the Fireface, in conjunction with a Hear Technologies Headphone system, allows me to send multiple outputs to the Hearback headphone mixer. This way, I can send the talent in the studio various elements of the mix, that they can set up anyway the like, leaving me to not have to deal with it!
My preamp is a dual Neve 1272, with a 2-1176 compressor.
Monitor speakers are Dynaudio BM6's and Yamaha NS-10's.

  • What are you guys doing... This is boring as hell...

I am even starting to wonder why like... You know why. So that there can be a red red the whole time you guys were intercepting my phone. But that being said, why don't you meet me outside. Let's have a talk shall we? I'll be there at 3:36am

PS. Make that 5 minutes from now I need to find a few things

  • What do you guys think of this site/pricelist/ any advice?

    Hey guys,
Just finished up launching my graphics business website -
    www.coastgrafix.com.
Have a look at it, let me know what you think, didn't want to
get to advanced with flash on it etc. - If you have any pointers or
ideas for it or the pricing let me know!
    Regards,

As others have said, your menu text defies legibility, but so
    does all
of the text except "CoastGrafix" in the logo. The Serpentine
    font is
particularly hard to read, even in print, and as graphic text
    at the
size you are using it, might as well be hieroglyphs. It is
    also, as
others have noted, a very dated type face--it does convey a
    "high tech"
feeling, but the "high tech" of about 1982. The HTML text is
    too small
and white text on black is hard to read.
The highlight colors for your menu are confusing. A color
    that serves as
the highlight color for one menu item is the not-highlighted
    color for
several others. Two shades of gray are used for two menu
    items'
highlight, and the orange... well, it's hard to summarize
    what the
colors might mean here, and that's a problem.
Also, the color scheme that you seem to be trying to use on
    menu items
to indicate the current page is inconsistently implemented or
    just an
accident that looks sort of deliberate.
You are using orange with an underline for links, but using
    the same
color (without an underline) for emphasized text. This is
    confusing.
On your ???? page (can't tell which page it is from the
    design, and all
of your page titles are the same) you have an image that says
    something
like "HOT SPECIAL." Clicking this launches my email program.
    I have a
very strong aversion to links that are email links and not
    identified as
such. You would do better to use a form for this function
    anyway.

  • CS 5.5.2 and still no GTX480 support for Mecury Engine? What are you guys smoking when supporting 470

Never buying a Adobe product again. I'm in supporting for death of Flash. This is gone too far. I'm pissed to the core with Adobe. I would rather have FCP do the job than this crap where i don't get support.

    Meetajhu,
MPE with GPU acceleration does indeed speed up both renders and encoding (when exporting from Premiere Pro 5/5.5) by a factor of generally between 1.5 and 1.8. See the following thread to better understand what I mean by this:
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/3459631?tstart=0
I just ran a test with all files on a single drive and to export 7.25 minutes of AVCHD to MPEG2-DVD (NTSC, progressive, wide, HQ) and comparing HW assisted vs. SW only I get:
    w/ GTX 580 = 90% CPU + 54% GPU (takes 1:21)
    software only = 98% CPU + 0% GPU (takes 2:00)
As you and others point out, when using MPE w/ GPU can speed up the time required for "Timeline Rendering" by up to a factor of infinity, but that can be useless if only doing a "render effects in timeline" (Enter key) is not enough rendering for your hardware to provide smooth playback from the timeline!
For example, if you have a timeline that show fully "red", as the AVCHD example above does on my PC, then PPro will force a partial render before it will even play back the clip (even though on my PC it plays flawlessly by simply pressing the spacebar). Then, when I shift over to "MPE with GPU accelaration" the whole timeline shows a yellow bar indicating that it is ready for playback without any rendering.
Finally, try to give PPro a chance; FCP had years of being at the top, but it is PPro's time now!
    Regards,
    Jim
