What do you know about GUS II compatibility?

Eager to have an external GPU that works with my MacBook Air. I've read that MSI is developing the GUS II. It hasn't been released obviously, but I want to know your opinion about Apple supporting it; its benefits and limitations.
Thank you.

It's impossible to discuss the product intelligently since it's not shipping yet and MSI hasn't said anything further that I can find since the annoucement of the product at the CES in January. I don't believe they've even officially said that it will work with Mac OS X; they showed it only with Windows. We'll need to wait until it's available before anyone can offer more than guesswork based on what MSI has released in the way of information.
Apple won't themselves support it at all, any more than they provide official support for any third-party product.
Regards.

  • What do you know about Kerio Mail?

We were considering converting to a Kerio mail server program. Has anyone else used or using it? Anything we should know about?

We are just now in the process of switching to Kerio from Tiger Server's postfix bundle. We have a large Open Directory network and we have about 20 different virtual mail domains. Apple's solution has been, well, not a joy to use and admin and we've had continued problems with SMTP queue lockups.
What finally tipped the balance towards Kerio was our purchase of another company with 160 Exchange users. I need a server with some degree of Exchange-like functionality as well as Open Directory integration and good virtual domain support. Kerio seemed like a good solution.
The first thing you need to know about Kerio is that Open Directory integration works very, very well - unless you need to break your directory users into separate domains in Kerio. Then it falls apart.
What happens is that Kerio installs some schema extensions to Open Directory and stores user account data in those extensions. One of these bits of data is a flag that indicates to Kerio whether or not a user account has been activated in Kerio. What it fails to do is indicate which of Kerio's domains the user belongs to.
The result is that all Open Directory-based users wind up being members of all of your mail domains since Kerio simply looks for activated members in the directory service.
We worked on ways around this, including hacking OU support into Open Directory (at Kerio's suggestion - http://www.afp548.com/filemgmt_data/files/Customizing%20Open%20Directory.pdf), but nothing worked. In the end, Kerio admitted that this is a problem and escalated the ticket so that a fix should arrive in a future revision. A good result, I think, and nice to see a responsive software company.
The result is that we now have to create local Kerio mail accounts, which is not really much of an issue since Kerio offers user templates. But what we've learned is that even without the direct Open Directory integration, we can still use Kerberos for authentication to the Open Directory accounts. This makes a big difference for us in security and user account management.
One thing that is going to be tough as we roll Kerio out to more users this week is migrating messages and mailboxes from the Tiger Server mail system to Kerio. My contact at Kerio provided me with an unsupported perl script to move mailboxes and messages but it's not perfect. I moved a small domain last night (<10 users) and only one worked properly. The rest I had to move manually.
My understanding is that the migration tool for Exchange users is much better and fully supported. We'll be looking to move our new batch of Exchange users in the next month or so and we'll see how well (or not) it works then.
I've also not tested the Kerio Outlook Connector software but the ability for Kerio to masquerade as Exchange seems to work fine when syncing from Address Book.
If you have mobile clients, look into the new 6.3 beta as they've included over-the-air syncing with ActiveSync clients and direct-push and remote wipe for Windows Mobile 2005 clients. <br>

  • What do you know about Parabola ?

    Hi to everyone:
I found this distro based on Arch Linux.
Somebody can talk us about it?.
Share your experience/knowledge with us, please.

Apparently it's working on MIPS support. Kind of interesting I suppose. Is that so it can be run on those Loongson CPUs like what Richard Stallman uses? Those things have 100% free software support, even at the BIOS level - which would seem to fit in well with the distro's aims.
I don't really care about having a 100% free software system, but hey, if they get the MIPS support done and it will fit in 2MB of storage then maybe I'll install it on my ADSL modem

  • What do you think about the html5?

I've been seeing developers philosophizing about the future, and I want to know what do you think about the brand new html5?
mainly because the html5 can take out of the market technology ( flex ).
    thanks for the opinion!!!
    [email protected]

Yep this is most definitely not just a rumor, I've found plenty of sources talking about this.
Here's someone's take on HTML5, a non-Adobe perspective, from a Silverlight developer.  I thought this would be interesting to mention.  Not sure I agree 100% with everything said (IE may not be most used browser and I don't believe in DRM), but it's an interesting read anyway:
Yes, you can do a LOT of stuff with HTML5 + JS that Silverlight is good for. But HTML5 will only reach Candidate Recommendation status in 2012 - if Silverlight keeps the current pace, it will be at V7 by then.
HTML5 will only get you approximately what Silverlight had at V1.0. A Canvas element, some video playback capabilites, and a Javascript programming model. Can you imagine how further advanced Silverlight 4 is at the moment?
Actually, scratch that - the video quality and availability of HTML5 is a lot worse than what Silverlight has to offer. There is no DRM, no Smooth Streaming, not even full screen! No GPU acceleration either. Even the codec HTML5 has to support is not standardized! This results in Firefox 3.6 having only Theora decoder, and Youtube experimenting with HTML in H.264 (on the same day FF3.6 launched), only playable in approx. 4-5% of the world's browsers.
Internet Explorer is still the most widely used browser on the web, and does not have HTML5. Currently, there are more Silverlight capable browsers browsing the web than HTML5 compatible ones. I don't think that in the next 3 years you will be able to create an HTML5 app and hope that at least 50% of the world's population can view it without switching browsers. (and remember: installing a plugin is a lot less hassle than switching to a new browser!)
HTML5 will not be truly cross-browser standard for quite a long time, if ever. There are too many things that the browser developer can do as they wish - just think about the aforementioned video codec issue. There are too many little differences in each browser's Javascript implementation to make it really portable.
The developer story: nothing in the HTML + JS world comes close to the awesome Visual Studio and Expression Blend tools. Javascript is cool for small apps, but cannot hold a candle to C# when it comes to serious development. Fighting with browser and OS incompatilities takes up a huge amount of time for any HTML website or web app - with Silverlight you don't have this.
Just compare what the best HTML / Ajax company in the world (Google) did with maps, and what MS did to see the difference. Go tohttp://maps.google.com/ (watch out - the Streetview part is in Flash, not Ajax), and compare it to http://www.bing.com/maps/explore/. That is the difference I am talking about.
Of course he means (or should have meant) Flex/Flash rather than just Flash.  As for the GWT and other AJAX fanboys who I guess think browser compatibility problems are going to be a thing of the past (or won't be a drag on corporate bottom lines - haha), it makes you wonder what other wild fantasies they're envisioning for the future.  Next they'll come and tell us XML-based protocols are going to be as fast as AMF...

  • IPad 3 light leak under the bezel? What have you done about it?

If you have an iPad 3. Tilt towards you, looking underneath the bezel (under the camera) has your iPad got any lights showing? It's not bleeding onto the screen, in fact it doesn't interfere at all under normal use of the iPad. I have read many forums and it does seem to be quite common, but i would like to know what have you done about it? Have you replaced within 14 days and got a brand new iPad and been satisfied ? Or have you had another with worse or different issues? Or have you ignored the issue and kept the iPad?
I walked into comet and the first iPad 3 I picked up had exactly the same issue. I asked the bloke, he said yes? It's no problem, it's common in led screens and with the iPads new retina screen your bound to get this problem on some but it's no problem as doesn't effect your everyday use. Not the point though is it, we pay 400-579 for this thing!
I also rang apple and they spoke with their technical team and they came back and said the lights under the bezel seems unusual. To try and restore the iPad and see if that solves it. Solves a hardware problem?? How did they get their jobs? Crazy. So now I am in the middle of returning the iPad for a replacement but I am debating whether to even bother as I have read a lot of replacements people have received have numerous other problems, like dead pixels, light leakage, scratches.
I would appreciate any feedback from those who have had this same issue and what did you do about it ?

Mine has some along the right side. It is very slight, and does not affect the screen, even with a black image displayed in a dark room. So I chose to ignore it. This iPad will be going back though, as the bottom half of the screen has a pink tint on it. My advice is to see if it affects a dark picture in a dark room. If it doesn't, I would keep it. But in the end, you have to make your own decision and be comfortable with it. :)

  • [URXVT] Did you know about the contextual menu ?

    Hey folks,
I've been using urxvt for some years now but just realized that if you select some text, and do a Ctrl+right click, you get a menu with things like copy to clipboard or rot13 (??).
Did you know about this ? Is it a new feature ?
Are there more hidden things like this ?
I know about the Ctrl+Shift keycapture mode.
    Cheers,

  • How much info about the cache-cluster does the client have and What would you recommend about putting the cluster behind virtual ip

    Hi,
I will appreciate if someone can point me to some documentation as to how app-fabric client library accesses the app-fabric cluster.
What I have found so far is that the list of hosts provided in the client configuration are used as an entry point into the Cache-Cluster. By connecting to one of hosts, the client will download information about all the hosts constituting the cluster.
Since a named cache is distributed across the entire cluster, and the data can be stored on any node. How does the client decide which node it should connect to, to get the data from. Does the client have enough information to know which host has the data
or the client will connect to one of the nodes, if the node has data, it will serve it otherwise redirect the client to the node that has the data.
I also would like to know what do you say about the idea that we would like to put our cache-cluster behind a virtual ip, so that if needed, we can take down nodes or add more nodes. In fact the virtual ip will that of a load balancer, but we don't plan to
use it for load balancing purposes but the idea is that the client will have the virtual ip address and we can repoint this IP address, if we need to take out a node for maintenance reason.

I'm not sure about the reason for putting the cache servers in a VIP, but one of the reasons why the cache servers should be made known to the servers is because of auto load balancing and throughput
Imagine i have 10 cache servers running on 1G ethernet links, theoretically i have 10G usable bandwidth and the clients will be able to manage and load balance if any of the cache server fails or have performance issues
Now if all these were parked behind a VIP
    1. The LB now does the load balancing, which may not be optimal
    2. The LB may not have 10G upstream and 10G downstream, even if it has, this is quite a waste of resource\

  • Adobe, what do you think about that ?

    - one day I was demoing DPS to 35 people in Paris. The whole day the servers were barely accessible. For the reputation and reliability of DPS that was wonderful.
    - another day I was doing a little DPS demo for Adobe. Again the same problem.
    - another day, the demo was ruined because the servers were so slow.
    - this Monday morning, I open my iPad and I can see my latest Folio in ACV.
In the afternoon I join Adobe reps and partners and other VIPs in London for the launch of CS6. There I go with my iPad and what a surprise when I want to show the Folio to an Adobe representative ?
Despite being signed in, all my folios where archived and all in Download state. I could not access a WiFi and even if I could I think that downloading 500 Mb would be impossible.
Many people where asking me :
—"And are you teaching DPS ?"
    – I said "Yes, I'm even working on it for real projects."
    — "Do you have one to show us ?"
    – "No, because Adobe's software, for a reason that I don't understand, deleted all my folios a few moments ago and I would have to redownload them again. ACV sucks".
People to who I have talked to where Adobe people, chiefs of graphic studios (newspaper, agency,...), potential clients for DPS,...
There was even of Adobe person that told me : "We are receiving a lot of complaints about the technical model of DPS, and you're right, it's terrible".
There are so many problems with this app and with the servers.
DPS's reputation will may be better when one day we just play offline with the folios like a PDF in GoodReader for instance.
    DPS is exploding my bandwidth.

Peter, that is sad. If a publisher decides to pull the issue from the
server, that's like burning down their own library of things.
Apple wanted adobe to stop downloading such large data into the storage
that will be backed up. So issues now go into the cache, that will not be
    uploaded to the Icloud storage.
Because you buy a 64gb iPad, but get only 2Gb of online storage.

I would like to have a solar panel on my iPhone so I can have a constant state of charge what do you think about that?

I am among this community since I invested much into this corporation. I rather go to the consumers just to discuss an idea I would like for this corporation to achieve. I do not like to purchase third party accessories as they seem to fail my expectations or the fact that it is not worth it when i finally see what they have made. Yes they are good products but there is much disappointment when I look to third-party products that say they are engineering products for the iPhone or other Apple device I have purchase. Just a thought no need to be so hostile.
