What do you think are the5 Most Important Tips for a Mac Newbie

Having been amazed at the intuitivness of the iPad and not wanting to touch Windows 8 I have invested in my first Macbook Pro. I love the feel of its quality and the expected Apple intuitiveness. I guess it is a case of not knowing what to ask hence this discussion heading.

The BEST tips out there are right here on the TIPS board:
https://discussions.apple.com/community/user_tips_library_documents?view=documen ts
Lots of VERY handy useful information from people who have "lasered" in on certain topics people ask all the time, or frequent things upper-level responders here make to help others, to make things clear and easy.
Theres a wealth of treasure there you wont find elsewhere,....many artcles have been polished and perfected.

  • What do you think about the Belkin - Snap Shield for Apple iPad 2 - Clear protector?

well i've just bought it, does somebody have it for some time??? what can you tell me about it

I think Apple has really screwed this UP! You are correct,
they should be posting a fix for the umpteen gillion of us who spent hundreds of dollars on their product and then they give us a crappy "upgrade" that renders the very expensive product USELESS!!! This is extremely frustrating. I should not have to be a rocket scientist
to use my **** mp3 player!

  • What do you think about alternative online localization tools for iPad apps?

This would be a good example: https://poeditor.com/. It seems there are no costs involved. How useful is it to translators?

You could also have a look at the following www.rollapp.com, I have only recently found it.
You have access to the full OpenOffice and LibreOffice library of program's  and it syncs with Dropbox, google docs and others.
You do require an Internet connection as it is cloud based.
At present I have only used it for quick editing but I think it definitely looks promising and it is free

  • What do you think of this new computer configuration for me?

I'm about to buy a new computer and would appreciate any feedback about my choices. I'm buying it because my current computer bogs down using Content Aware Fill and HDR and is too slow for games.
Here is what I currently plan to buy:
    Alienware m18x Laptop
    Intel i7 2630QM 2.0 GHz (2.8 w turbo boost, 6MB Cache)
    Win 7 64 bit
    RAM - 16GB dual channel DDR3 at 1600MHz
Dual overkill video cards for gaming (2x AMD HD 6970M)
80 GB SSD for OS and programs
120 GB SSD (40 GB for games and about 80GB for Scratch)
750 GB 7200 rpm hard drive external usb 3.0 for files.
    See anything stupid yet? :-)
For another $150 (5% of total) I could get a CPU that is 10% faster but I think it might be smarter to go cheap now and upgrade in a year or two.
16GB is all I can squeeze into this laptop without spending a fortune.
Since I can't have more RAM, I think having SSD for scratch might be good.
I don't know what size files I generate but my camera makes 18M pixels pics. I usually open fewer than five at any one time. I usually don't open more than five layers. I also use LR 3.4. I'm also getting a Dell 30" 2560x1600 monitor.
I can afford speed but I don't like throwing money away. I need a laptop instead of a desktop because I travel and like to bring my computer with me.
Can you suggest any improvements? See any bottlenecks?
    Thanks for advice!

With 16G of RAM will 80Gb be enough for Scratch?
I think that depends on what you try to do...
I have 16 GB myself, and I saw scratch use go over 200 GB once when stitching a large panorama.  I was flabbergasted that Photoshop could think it needed 200 GB of space for what would be a resultant pano that was only a few hundred megapixels.
Just twiddling the Liquify filter can cause GB after GB to be used up by files of the form *_MVM_*.tmp in short order.  Unfortunately, these temporary files aren't put on the drive identified for scratch, but in the folder identified by TEMP - usually (that's an open sore spot here on the forum at the moment).
I'd have to say that in general you'll probably be okay.

  • What do you think of applecare on a MBP?

    1. What do you think of applecare on a MBP for an extra $309?
    2. Do you know if you can buy an apple care plan before your 1 year runs out.

Generally, it makes sense to purchase extended care if you plan on keeping your unit. Just keep in mind that there are certain issues which your Applecare warranty will not cover. Make sure you read and understand those clearly.
The other thing you should know is that you have up to a year to decide whether or not you want it.
You should also check with your credit card company (if you've bought it on a card) if they will extend the warranty on any of your purchases. In some cases they will extend it beyond the existing warranty by one year. But don't expect the same turn around and repair/refund policy you get with Apple -- they'll be a little harder to deal with, but will ultimately stand by their warranty when you hold them to it.

  • What are the most important functions you cannot bypass in acrobat?

I would like to know what are the most important functionalities that we can not bypass in Acrobat? What makes Acrobat more worthy than other PDF reader/editor?
Personally, I notice that Acrobat (adobe products in general) takes longtime to install or uninstall. I don't find a striking feautre in Acrobat compared with other software!
Worse, Acrobat doesn't support Multiple document interface! So, I don't know why I should pays for Adobe while other free PDF viewer/reader offer this great feature!
Adobe does like Microsoft was doing long time ago in ignoring people opinions! I don't understand why adobe persists not to include MDI (Multiple Document Interface) at least as optional feature?
    Thanks

The MDI issue is caused by following Windows User Interface Guidelines. Complain to Microsoft. As to what functionality is most important. The most important is creating problem free pdfs. The other things I find important are the form related capabilities, preflight, pdf optimizer and redaction.

  • Laptop editing with Premiere Pro CS4: what are the most important specs

Laptop Editing: What are the MOST important specs?
Hello everybody, I have been a long time lurker, but I decided to join in and share my voice.
I've been editing, for a while now, various projects of various lenghts shot on my HV20, on an IMac using Adobe Premiere Pro. Actually, I bought the CS4 Extended Production Suite last year  thinking that it made sense to be able to edit, do the coloring and effects+ sound all within the same suite.
AND, it came with OnLocation, wich is, I think, a fantastic tool. I really want to be able to record and monitor my future shoots using OnLocation. I've seen how useful monitors and scopes are on set, and the idea of being able to shoot in HD and actually checking the focus on something larger than a few inches is very appealling!
So a laptop is in my future. Now, what are the most important specs?
    I could buy 1) a barely used Macbook pro early 08- 17" HD led display ,4g Ram ddr2 ,nvidia 8600M GT 512 VRAM ,800Mhz BUS, 200G 7200HD
and have enough money left to buy an Apple Display 30" refurb
    OR 2) a new Macbook pro 17, 4 g Ram ddr3, 512 VRAm, 4g Ram ddr3, double procsessors 9400M+9600M GT 512 VRAM, 1066 BUS, 500G 7200HD
and wait for a second display!
Plus, of course, a portable External Scratch Drive on the Express Card. Now, if that fast drive is handling the footage, could'nt I settle for a 5400HD in the laptop,, they seem much less prone to problems-clicking noise, heat-than the 7200, especially in the new unibody model. Is 800 versus 1066 BUS a terrible trade-off? In terms of secondary displays , I've heard less than lukewarm things about the new Apple 24 LED (glossy is no-no for me).
My intentions are to make documentaries and short fictions as well. I make a living as an actor so I don't need to be performing as a director/editor business wise!
I do want to explore that side of the craft, in a professional and enjoyable way though. I know that, in addition to the laptop, I will get a MacPro in a few years.
Thanks a lot for the inputs!

Successful video editing (as compared to tear your hair out video editing) requires at least two hard drives... one for all software and one for all data... some people use 3 drives, with data on one and scratch files on the 3rd drive
I'm not sure about software, but everything I've ever read in this forum says 5400 is NOT fast enough for the data drive
If you want to edit video... you have to buy the hardware that works

CPU, RAM, bus speed, system HD, external HD, graphics - basically in that order
You should think in terms of purchasing for maximum future use. In that regard the new 17" MacBookPro is the way to go. The specs are significantly better than the early '08 MacBook and you will be much happier in the long run with performance, software support and longevity.
If you really need a large display, consider a 24" Dell, HP, NEC, etc. in the $200-$300 price range to stay within your total budget. You will be pleasantly surprised how good they are.
You could start out with the 5400rpm system HD - you can replace it anytime with a 7200rpm drive if necessary for hardly any more $ than it would cost in the first place; and replacing it does NOT void your warranty. But you WILL want/need a good external FW800 or eSATA drive (for eSATA you will need an eSATA expressCard/34 however) no matter what.
One other thought, if your primary use will be with an external display, and you don't actually need eSATA capability (FW800 will do you just fine at this point), then the 15" 2.66GHz or 2.8GHz MacBookPro models will be just fine at a significantly lower cost than the 17" model.

  • What do you think of new Cisco NSS 300 Smart Storage?

Did you see the press release of the new Cisco NSS 30 Smart Storage?
    http://newsroom.cisco.com/dlls/2010/prod_060910.html
    What did you think?
More informaion about the product can be found at http://www.cisco.com/go/smartstorage

I guess no one from Cisco is going to repond to your post Johnny.
I agree with your thoughts, and was excitedly looking forward to Cisco's entry in the small NAS market and rushed out to buy a NSS326 (Equiv to QNAP TS-659) Unit.  I already own a QNAP TS-639 older model for 1.5 years and loved it - and expected Cisco just to make this even a better unit.  Which in some ways they have (Syslog and Radius features) - although as you've already noticed, elimation of QPKG application support which numbers up to almost 2 dozen applications that are not available on Cisco's version
Unfortunately if you look on eBay, you'll see my NSS326 up for sale.
To address your points (from my point of view)
    1) ROCK SOLID:  I've found the hardware to be just that (on both units).  Built well, and I'm sure will last for years.   As for software stability, - see next
    2) FAST FIRMWARE UPDATES:  It's for this reason that the unit is up for sale.   V3.0 of the firmware was a major release.  And there have been issues - although many/most of them have been addressed with still a few (somewhat serious) issues still lingering.   QNAP seems to be attacking these fairly quickly.   Unfortunately there has been 2 releases from QNAP addressing issues since Cisco's adoption of this unit since v3.2.6.   As you'll see in these posts, Cisco is not following QNAPs releases, and will be releasing their own line of firmware.  For me, this is a serious issue - and I wish I knew this before purchasing.  I feel Cisco is already 2 releases behind which includes many fixes to their current platform. (Also see QPKG note above - many missing applications)
    3) SUPPORT:  This is where Cisco excels and always has.   To start 5yr vs 1yr warranty, and of course Cisco TAC is one of the best in the world.  In contrast, QNAP's support quite frankly isn't great - although, it's support community for forums are excellent.   Unfortunately I can't speak specifically on NSS support since I haven't called them for this, so I'm speaking more generally.
So it really boils down to whats more important for your situation.
    Cheers

  • What did you think of iMovie '11?

I am thinking about buying a new mac but I'm only really concerned about the movie making software. I have used iMovie a few years ago and I liked it for the most part but I want some personal feedback on it. What did you think of the new software? What has changed in the last few years? Anything important that I should know?

    Hi
If You last used iMovie HD6 then the change is severe - it's a compleately new tool.
If iMovie'08 or 09 the difference is not that great.
    Some I listed as
    *iMovie 09 (v8) 8.0.6 (jan 2009)*
    • Far better than iMovie 08 but still far from good.
    • Pic in pic, green screen but basic
    • Image stabilization - fairly good for amateur use
    • Speed-up/down and reverse
    • Bl/W, Old age etc
    • Still - No Continous TimeLine
    • NO - Possibilities to enhanze by use of thirdpart Plug-ins (all investments lost)
    • NO - Playback via Camera/FW - and this prevents 100% safteybackups and the use of an extra TV/Monitor as real-time Quality control (as in iM 1 to HD6)
Aimed at - speed editing small video projects to be presented on the Internet - NOT DVDs
    *iMovie 11 (v9) 9.0.x*
    • Will be - Intel Only
    • Snow Leopard minimum Mac OS X.6.3
    YES
    • Advanced view including a true TimeLine ? Yes but rudimentary (very basic)
    • True Storyboard - where You even can write and prepare space for lacking material that needs to be obtained or re-shoot. YES
    • Better wave-form presentation of audio and audio tools - Rubberband - Yes
    • Trailer creating tool
    • ”Faces” as in iPhoto - NO - but this finds if there are people in some video-clips
    • Better audio tools. Equalizer and a background audio reducer
    • More Camera support eg 24fps
    NO
    • not 64-bit only
    • The Playback to Camera via FW - returns ? NO
    • Full Quality to iDVD - NO - still only half - every second line
    • Plug-in facility ? - NO
    • No free text tool
    • Tool to mask an identity eg band over face or unsharp area. - NO (could be obtained via Plug-ins in iM HD6 and earlier)
    • Animation tool - To point on interesting object/player - NO animations refere to a totally different
thing connected to Storyboard and insert of ”dummy animations” while building a movie
    Yours Bengt W

  • Hi! i have a macbook pro 3.1 with a 10.6.8 version. I want a 10.7 but i dont want any speed problems, what do you think?

Hi! i have a macbook pro 3.1 with core 2 duo, 3gb ram and a 10.6.8 version. I want a 10.7 version but i dont want any speed problems, what do you think?

Some MacBook Pro versions cannot be upgraded past 10.6.8; others are maxed out at 10.7.5. newer models can go all the way to 10.10. So it is important to know exactly what version you have--there may be close to 40 variants produced since the MB made its debut in 2006.
You can safely give us a snapshot of your model and its current config that will allow us to deternmmine your model and its upgrade potential, plus show it you have any software that may impede any upgrades. Please download and install this free utility:
    http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck
It is secure and written by one of our most valued members to allow users to show details of their computer's configuration in Apple Support Communities without revealing any sensitive personal data.
Run the program and click the "Copy report to clipboard" button when it displays the results. Then return here and paste the report into a response to your initial post. It can often show if any harmful files/programs are dragging down your performance.
Remember that, on leaving OS10.6.8, you lose the ability to run older softare written for older PowerPC Macs (yours in Intel-based). Programs such as Office 2004 will no longer work (min of Office 2008 needed to work on newer OS versions), and AppleWorks will stop working completely

  • I accidentally deleted my iPhoto when i empty my trash? i think 1year ago.i want it back but i heard that its difficult...my 2nd option is i'll buy iPhoto from apps. what do you think guys? thank you and god bless!

i accendentaly deleted my iphoto when i empty my trash. i think 1 year ago. i want it back but they say its difficult. now i think i'll buy iphoto to apps. what do you think guys??? ty and god bless!

A bunch of totally different questions
iPhoto is an application and it is in your applications folder - is it there? It must be in teh Applications folder on your boot drive - it can not be on an external drive
The photos are kept in the iPhoto library (by default and highly recommended) - is that what you deleted? It can be anyplace by by default it is in your pictrues folder
Time Machine is a backup program that backuse your your Mac - you do NOT directly access its backup files but you use the Time Machine application to restore files - see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1427?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US for details
Your post is not at all clear as to what you have or what you want to do
If in fact you do have a copy of the photos on an external hard drive as you say you thikyou do them you launch iPhoto and import them to iPhoto (file menu import  --  or drag them to the iPhoto icon in the Dock)
If you have a time machine backup of your iPhoto library and you want to use that then you launch TM and go to the time you wna tto restore from, select the iPhoto library and click restore
If the above does not cover what you have and what you want please post back with exact details of what you have and what you want to do

  • Best text chat option between PC/Mac - What do YOU think?

    Hi,
What do YOU think is the best text chat option between PC's and Mac's. I am setting this up between a mac and PC and would really like to hear what people think is the best and easiest option.
    Many thanks...

Adium is a really nice client that works with all IM networks.
As far as text only IM goes, they are all the same really... and most official clients suck. Go with Adium so you could use any services.
Also the default iChat works with AIM on PC's.

  • Which views are the most important for a dba admin?

Hi I am new to oracle, and I am wondering which views are the most important to monitore.
Can someone give me a usefull link?
I know the views depend of wich kind of information you wanna retrieve.
But I think about space left on tablespaces, segment information, backup information, status of the database.....
So any help would be appreciated. For example I am wonering which views would an admin taking a new job and database would look?

I would recommend you (if not already done):
    - first read the Concepts manual:
    http://download-uk.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14220/toc.htm
    - then the Administration Guide:
    http://download-uk.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14231/toc.htm
At the end of each chapter of this document, there is a section named "Viewing Information About ..." such as http://download-uk.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14231/create.htm#sthref482
    that contains the related views.
