What do you value in a window manager?

I have discovered that Metacity (the default window manager for Gnome) has compositing. This compositing is very basic, mostly adding shadows to windows, but it makes the desktop look and feel very nice (at least to me).  I find Compiz-Fusion or just plain Compiz too much, and this very refreshing.  There is how ever some functionality that I find myself missing.  The most notable is the ability to drag windows from one workspace to another.  This got me thinking about what functionality I value in a window manager:
It looks pretty -- Inviting window dressing with shadowing and fading. The transparency effects I never found that interesting.  I have tried Openbox numerous times (played with its themes and everything) and I always find it dull and never used it for long.  This realization came as a bit of a surprise to me, I had no idea that I valued looks so much.
Fast and clear way of browsing and selecting open windows -- I like it when this is not limited to one workspace, but does give distinction between the workspaces.  The window selector in the top right corner of the Gnome desktop or clicking the third button on the desktop in Xfce is prime examples of this.  Also, I like to have the option of doing this with the mouse or keyboard and I am annoyed that Alt Tab is limited to one workspace in most cases.
The ability to drag windows from one workspace to another
Simplicity -- I find that Compiz is too much.
I am curious as to what functionality or aspects of window managers others value, and would appreciate any feedback.
Thank you

I value speed and configurability.  Consequently, I use Openbox.

If all you need is shadows/fading, Xcompmgr will work inside Openbox and provide those 'features' (I personally dislike them).

Xfce can set the Alt-Tab window switcher to work on all workspaces (I think).  My favorite option is the Openbox desktop menu (accessible by middle-clicking the desktop), which I have mapped to the desktop button on Pypanel (see attached screenshot).

On Openbox, I just right-click the title bar and select 'Send to desktop...'.  If you require the dragging functionality, most pagers (such as those in the GNOME or Xfce panels) allow you to drag windows.  Bear in mind that more minimal WM's such as the *boxes and Pekwm can run any panel that you want (or no panel at all), so you can bring your GNOME panel along with you.

  • What is a firefox window? what do you mean by open window?

    Ok. I want to know how I can tell what version of Firefox I have. It say to open "the firefox window" How do you do that, and what is a firefox window. I AM NOT asking about MS windows. I am not computer savvy at all, so please explain what you mean by a window and how to tell what version I have. Please, very simply and step by step. I have absolutely no idea what you are talking about when you say Open the firefox window.

    Thank you ideato! You did exactly as I asked: Explained it simply and step by step. I am fairly intelligent on a lot of things, but technology, especially computers....not so much. I even have the most basic of cell phones, 'cause I don't get the Smart phone thing. So from this old boomer who is admittedly a "techno phobe" (and I know I have to get over that and learn, especially in this world) I appreciate it!
    Thank you from the bottom of my techno idiot heart. @;-}

  • What is your favourite Desktop Environment/Window Manager and why?

    I'm using Openbox because it's lightweight and sleek looking. I don't actually need the lightweight-ness since my laptop has very good specs, but I love the speed and the simplicity.

    Previously, with separate 32-bit and 64-bit installers, you could run the 64-bit installer on Vista, and it would work correctly.  However, it was not officially supported by Adobe.
    Now with the 11.3 combined installers, I do not know what it installs on Vista.  I do not have Vista available, so I cannot test it.  Can you tell me what files you have in

  • Window Manager\Window Manager Group

    Based on customer requirements we need to set Bypass traverse checking rights for our Server 2012 boxes. In doing so we noticed that there is a user or group named Window Manager\Window Manager Group. I have seen references in other threads to this user
    pointing to the SID (S-1-5-90-0), but this is not documented anywhere on Microsoft website that I can find. I used Powershell to list all of the users, and I do not see a user or group on my Server 2012 box that matches this.
    Given no response from Microsoft and no documentation, I cannot effectively decide what I should do with this.
    It looks kind of shady that we are granting rights to a SID / Account that we cannot see, so I am wondering if this is some remnant for a part of Server 2012 that didn't get deployed when the code was released to manufacturing. Can some please confirm that
    it is OK to drop this user or group (not even sure which one it is) from the Bypass Traverse Checking user right?

    Hi,
    Based on my research,it is not recommended to remove the group ‘Window manager\Windows manager group’ from Bypass traverse checking or Increase a process working set.
    • Both the above user rights are utilized in windows 8/2012 for performance impacts.
    • The above mentioned group cannot be added manually to any other groups or no user can be a part of it as it does not resolve in object picker. We cannot even add ACLs to this group.
    • Due to above reasons, it is not a security breach in your environment.
    This group is a virtual group that is present on every Windows 2012 machine. The DWM.EXE that is used to manage he desktop experience runs under the security context of an account under this group and this is used to provide less privilege to the DWM.EXE.
    As such this is not documented anywhere in any of public documents. This is a design decision made by the product team which is part of the architecture of the OS. As such the practice is not to remove this group from both the user rights assignment mentioned.
    How Bypass traverse checking affects performance:
    When you try to access c:\foo\bar\baz\bletch\george.txt, “the rules” say that you need to confirm that the user has traverse access to:
              C:\foo
              C:\foo\bar
              C:\foo\bar\baz
              C:\foo\bar\baz\bletch
    If you didn’t have the “bypass traverse checking” privilege, the system would have to open each of these directories in turn and do an access check to make sure you had access to all the intermediate nodes in the path to the file.  With bypass traverse
    checking, the filesystems skip all those checks and just check to make sure you have your desired access to the file you’re opening.
    How increase a process working set affects performance:
    This settings controls who can increase the working set of a process when in memory. Working set is the data that is resending in the Ram that is visible to the process. This helps in expanding the memory a process stores in RAM thereby reducing page faults
    (paging out memory to virtual memory which will induce delays of copying the memory back to RAM).
    Given the above reasons, I strongly recommend you not to remove ‘Windows manager\Windows manager group’ from Bypass traverse checking as well as increase a process working set user rights assignment.
    Thanks.

    You are talking to fellow users on these forums, not iTunes Support or Apple - I've asked the hosts to remove your phone number from your post.
    For the Camera app, try closing it via the taskbar and see if it works when you re-open the app : from the home screen (i.e. not with the Camera app 'open' on-screen) double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar at the bottom of the iPad's screen, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of the Camera app to close it, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.
    If that doesn't fix it then try a soft-reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.
    In terms of syncing, you will need iTunes on your computer - if you haven't already downloaded it then you can do so from here : http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
    You can conncet the iPad to your computer and select it on the left-hand sidebar of your computer's iTunes (you can enable the sidebar on iTunes 11 on a PC via control-S), and use the tabs on the right-hand side of the iTunes screen to sycn your content to the iPad.

    For the excel file, what app are you viewing/editing it in ? If the values are different then it may be that the app that you are using doesn't support all the formulas that are being used in the spreadsheet. Apps that 'support' excel documents include Apple's Numbers app, and from third-parties apps such as Documents To Go ('premium' version) and QuickOffice Pro HD.

  • Desktop Environment VS Window Manager, what is the difference?

    I was wondering about the difference between DE and WM?
    It is just like iconize VS minimize or directory VS folder?
    So it is the same just more Unix-like or more Windows-like?
    Or there is a difference?

    Strictly speaking, a window manager is in charge of managing windows. It draws the decorations (usually just the title bar and borders) and places each window onscreen. It's also in charge of moving and resizing windows. If you run X without a window manager, each window opens, without a border, in the top-left corner of the screen (you can usually use the -geom or --geometry option to pick a default position when running an app), and you can't move or resize them. (Examples: Xmonad, evilwm, Metacity)
    Many window managers offer a built-in application launcher, usually by showing a menu when you right-click on the desktop. I prefer to call this a "desktop shell", what Enlightenment calls itself, because it does more than manage windows but is still a single program. (Examples: Fluxbox, Openbox, Window Maker)
    A desktop environment is a collection of programs and libraries designed to create an integrated environment. It almost always includes a window manager, with the notable exception of the RoX desktop. The individual parts of a DE can be swapped out if you prefer another program. For example, before XFCE included Thunar, I ran it with Openbox as a WM and RoX as a file manager. (Examples: KDE, XFCE, Étoilé)

  • If you traded in your mac mini for a windows pc, what would you get?

    I have a late 2009 Mac Mini and am just chafing to upgrade. It's slow as molasses.  But at the same time, I'm not willing to pay full price for 2012 model, and Apple is way behind in releasing an update. In fact I'm hearing speculation that Apple may be just discontinuing the Mac Mini.
    I don't know... But I'm getting tired of waiting. And getting a different model of Mac doens't work for me, because I want to use my own screens. (I'm running two large screens in "portrait" mode.)
    Also, I have a Windows 7 PC at work, and I've come to realize that I don't mind Windows 7 and don't see it as intrinsically better than the Apple OS. In fact Windows & has generally been mariginally more stable, and a lot faster then the OS on my Mac. In fact I got both systems around the same time and the Windows 7 system did better with less RAM and is "aging" better.
    HOWEVER, what I really love about the Mac Mini is how QUIET it is. I have it in my bedroom, next to my bed, and it's noise is barely noticeable. So I guess I should look into seeing if there area any desktop PC's that are as quiet.
    Have you considered switching back to a PC, and if you did what would you get?

    I moved away from Apple in 2007 and have never looked back !
    I use the ASRock Vision X 420D  http://www.asrock.com/nettop/Intel/VisionX%20Series%20(Haswell)/
    Its the same size as the current Mini but a bit taller - BUT it is FULLY user upgradeable and about the same price once you make a mini upto the same spec.
    I run Windows 8.1 on it and love it - yes there are lots of people bleating on about the 'metro' style of Win 8 but if you configure it (which has been a feature from launch, not a 3rd party hack) you never have to see the metro interface and you have a standard desktop.
    As to woodmeister50 comment of : Also, with Win8, many third party add on companies have dropped support etc. is that not the same for Mavericks ?!

  • What do you find to be best practice when it comes to writing AS code to manage a big app ?

    Right now I am considering 3 options:
    1) I write all the code in a root component that extends group for example like this:
    <s:Application>
         <s:AppGroup>
                   <s:List />
         </s:AppGroup>
    </s:Application>
    So in it I will write the code to manage the list. Ok but Imagine now I have 10 views inside that AppGroup each having a list which needs to be managed. So here comes my option 2.
    2) I write code in the AppGroup component to manage what's on it's level and for new level (view for example) I create another component like ViewGroup1, ViewGroup2 etc which extends group or something else and I write code in it to manage what's inside of it. This looks like this:
    <s:Application>
         <s:AppGroup>
              <s:ViewGroup1>
                   <s:List />
              </s:ViewGroup1>
              <s:ViewGroup2>
                   <s:List />
              </s:ViewGroup2>
         </s:AppGroup>
    </s:Application>
    So this time the code to manage the views will be in AppGroup and the code for managing the Lists will be in the ViewGroup1/2 component.
    3) of course sometimes mixed architecture if for example the ViewGroup1 is very simple and doesn't have list but a label or something like that the code could be written in the AppGroup.
    What do you think of this code structure? Is my logic good or there's something else considered a best practice at the moment ? Thanks!

    Thank you all for the thoughts. Could we please stick to flex only for now...
    Currently I have a project where I see this structure:
    <Application creationComplete="init();">
         <fx:Script source="MainApp.as" /> - all initialization code is here
         <components /> - many components
    </Application>
    In the creation complete of the Application which is in MainApp.as, dataProviders are set and a controller class is initiated to which the Application is passed as Object and everything is manipulated from that controller. As you mentioned I guess you can always create additional controllers and pass them the Application or some other components from which they could start controlling so to speak.
    I am not sure if this structure is good or not, I started comparing it with mine and I ended up here...
    What I see at this point compared to mine is that:
    - in the included MainApp.as in Application I have question marks when i type something like "stage" in a function, I needs me to type "this.stage", which I don't like. To me it looks like including is bad and maybe everything should have started with creationComplete in the Application mxml with importing and initiating the controller with passing him the Application right away. Is that correct?
    - in the example given above, after MainApp initiates the controller by passing him the Application, the controller looses all of the nice code hints since now the Application is an object... maybe it's wrong for it to be object ? Should it be something else?
    Compared to my approach when I separate my logic into AS Group which is then extended as MXML Group. All I have to do is declare the instances in AS which I have as IDs in MXML and voila... I can control them and write their logic with all the nice code hints present.
    So basicly at this point you say instead of extending Group in AS every time I want to separate logic, write a controller right ?
    Here is what I summarized for now:
    1) Create a RootController class
    2) Initiate it in the creation complete of the Application passing the Application (as what type - object or something else?)
    3) manage all logic in that controller
    4) if parts of the application are too complex they can be separated into additional controllers.
    5) the RootController can initiate SubControllers which can initiate SubSubControllers
    6) to all controllers a component must be passed as a starting point for the logic
    Is this correct? If yes, what about the code hinting compared to my approach?
    Would be very nice if someone of you could make a very very very simple app with the model you are talking about, or if you have an article you took it from share the link! Thanks!

  • Can someone explain what I am doing wrong? Windows Boot manager error.

    Okay, I've literally searched EVERYWHERE and can not find a reasonable answer to this question.
    Everytime I try to load windows on bootcamp, I get this error:
    Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause . to fix problem:
    1. insert windows installation disc and restart computer
    2.choose your language settings, and then click "next"
    if you do not have the disc, contact your system admistrator or computer manufacturer for assistence
    status 0xc0000017
    And that's it.
    I have tried everything from usb to countless 8 gig DVD which I wasted from burning the ISO time and time again.
    I am doing everything through the bootcamp installer and I partition up to 80 gigs of space of my hard drive for it.
    This is an official iso image from windows btw.
    I think it's a memory problem, but I am not sure. Here are my specs:

    Use Disk Utility to format a disk to use with a Windows computer. Here's how:
    Important: Formatting a disk erases all the files on it. Copy any files you want to save to another disk before formatting the disk.
    Open Disk Utility.
    Select the disk you want to format for use with Windows computers.
    Click Erase, and choose one of the following from the Format pop-up menu:
    If the size of the disk is 32 GB or less, choose MS-DOS (FAT).
    If the size of the disk is over 32 GB, choose ExFAT.
    Type a name for the disk. The maximum length is 11 characters.
    Click the Erase button and then click Erase again.
    Which versions of Windows are supported with Boot Camp 5?
    64-bit versions of Windows 8 and Windows 7 are supported using the Boot Camp 5 Support Software. If you need to use a 32-bit version, you need to use Boot Camp 4 Support Software, and you must use Windows 7. 32-bit versions of Windows 8 are not supported via Boot Camp. • Documents managment: what do you use?

    I've been trying to find a good document manager to organise the mess I have in articles, lecture notes, books, etc, mostly in pdf format. So I need a tool like Referencer (http://icculus.org/referencer/) or gPapers (http://gpapers.org/) that could help me with that. Lamentably, both of them have a large list of dependencies, like hal and some gnome stuff, I would like to avoid. So I wander if any of you knows about some other, less bloated, tool to do the job.
    Maybe one of you have made a nice little script to retrieve BibTeX citations plus a database, or something along those lines.
    So, what do you use to organise your bibliography?

    itsbrad212 wrote:The only documents I read are pdf's, so I use either mupdf or zathura for that.
    EDIT: Wouldn't this fit better in Off-Topic, as this is in the section for requesting help?
    I am asking for help. Despite the title, this wasn't meant to be a poll, and for sure not about document readers, but I get where the confusion arises.
    So far it seems mendeley is the closest thing to what I'm looking for, it looks fairly complete. But I dislike 2 things, it being closed source and the need to create an account to use the full featured program. I think I will use it though, at least while I find a replacement or make some time to write a script to retrieve the bibtex citations from internet.
    I won't mark the thread as solved in case someone else knows about a good way to manage bibliographic material.

    Enrico,
    in your previous post you said:
    GarageBand (used with a Mic microphone) is stopping to record after only 7/8 minutes.
    In which way I may record a complete concert or at least one hour of music ???
    If you want to record at least one hour of music, you need to make the max. of 320 bars last for a long time - for example:
    With a maximum of 320 bars, a song with160 bpm and a 4/4 measure will only last for 8 minutes; to make it last 32 minutes, reduce the tempo to 40 bpm.
