What does a back up do?

what does a back up do

it stores all the data on your device in another place so that you can restore from it if a problem happens (say your device crashes or gets erased). then all your data is restored to your iPhone/iPod/iPad/Mac.

  • What does iCloud back up exactly (and does it have to be with a certain ID)?

    Hi,
I have a question regarding iCloud backup for an iOS device.  I currently have iCloud signed in with my Apple ID on my iPad.  I have many apps that I downloaded, but I also have many apps downloaded from a friend's ID.  Even though some apps are from a different ID than what iCloud is signed into, does it still back up the friend's apps?
This leads me to another question.  My ID mentioned above is actually my family's ID.  I recently created my own personal Apple ID, but have not downloaded anything with it as of yet.  I do not personally own any Apple devices.  The Mac and iPad are both my family's and will stay signed in with their ID.  What is the best way to move forward if I have my own ID, but with shared Apple devices?  I will soon get an iPhone 4S that I can have to myself with my Apple ID signed in to iCloud, but there are many apps from the family's account that I would like on my iPhone.  So, will this be backed up to iCloud, or just the stuff I download with my own ID?
    Thanks.

    Hey,
I thought I'd have bad news for you, but looks like Apple is OK with a family having one Apple ID for purchases and several IDs for iCloud.  Check out these articles:

  • What does restore back-up from an iPhone really mean

    Hi everyone
I haven't connected my iPhone to my computer/iTunes in over a year because I had computer issues that I just recently was able to fix. However, in the meantime I have purchased well over a hundred songs and over 50 apps. When I plugged my phone it, it gave me the following message:
"This computer has previously been synced with an iPhone or another IOS device"
and then it gave me two options:
    1. Set up a new iphone
2.restore from back up of my Iphone (but the last back up was from May 2011)
I'm not too sure how to proceed and am afraid that if I restore from back-up, I'll lose everything that I've purchased from May 2011 to present.
This may seem like a really simple question but I must honestly say that I am stumped...
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thank you in advance.

    Hi Bhazel,
Thank you for taking the time to help but I was wondering when i 'restore from back-up' what happens to the new apps? And will it delete the info contained within the actual app itself?

  • HT4946 windows 7 only sees my i phone as a camera and does no back up anyhing else

i need help backing up my phone

The ITunes Backup process creates a compressed package file you can't actually access, so how do you know its not backing up anything else?
The backup process is transparent, you won't be speciified what it backups up. But it does backup more than your photos.
    Apple wrote:
    What does iTunes back up
iTunes will back up the following information
Camera Roll (photos, screenshots, images saved, and videos taken)
For devices without a camera, Camera Roll is called Saved Photos.
Contacts* and Contact Favorites (regularly sync your contacts to a computer or cloud service, such as iCloud, to back them up)
    Calendar accounts and subscribed calendars
    Calendar events
Safari bookmarks, cookies, history, offline data, and currently open pages
    Autofill for webpages
    Offline web application cache/database
    Notes
Mail accounts (mail messages aren't backed up)
    Microsoft Exchange account configurations
    Call history
Messages (iMessage and carrier SMS or MMS pictures and videos)
Voicemail token (This isn't the voicemail password, but is used for validation when connecting. This is only restored to a phone with the same phone number on the SIM card)
    Voice memos
Network settings (saved Wi-Fi hotspots, VPN settings, network preferences)
Keychain (includes email account passwords, Wi-Fi passwords, and passwords you enter into websites and some applications)
If you encrypt the backup, you can transfer the keychain information to the new device. With an unencrypted backup, you can restore the keychain only to the same iOS device. If you're restoring to a new device with an unencrypted backup, you need to enter these passwords again.
App Store Application data (except the Application itself, its tmp, and Caches folder)
Application settings, preferences, and data, including documents
    In-app purchases
    Game Center account
    Wallpapers
Location service preferences for apps and websites you've allowed to use your location
    Home screen arrangement
    Installed profiles
When you restore a backup to a different device, installed configuration profiles aren't restored (such as accounts, restrictions, or anything that can be specified through an installed profile). Any accounts or settings that aren't associated with an installed profile will be restored.
Map bookmarks, recent searches, and the current location displayed in Maps
Nike + iPod saved workouts and settings
Paired Bluetooth devices (which you can only use if restored to the same phone that did the backup)
    Saved suggestion corrections
Trusted hosts that have certificates that can't be verified
    Web clips

  • TS3992 what does it mean that my iphone will no longer back up to my computer automatically when i sync with itunes?

What does it mean that "my iphone will no longer back up to my computer automatically when I sync with itunes", if I turn my icloud backup to "on"? This doesnt sound like something that will make things smoother? I just recently lost all my calendar events and I am hoping to recover them.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
You can either back up to iTunes or to iCloud, you you choose to back up to iCloud, back up to iTunes will be turned off. Personally, I'd always back up to iTunes unless there is a good reason not to you.

  • HT201250 What does time Machine back-up?

I would like to use Time Machine as a back-up on an external USB hard drive.  However, I am not sure what it actually backs up.  I want it to back up only the main Mac hard drive and not all the files and folders on the external drive which I will also use as the destination for the TimeMachine back-up.  Is there a way to do this or does Time Machine only back-up the main MacHD and not connected "data" drives like the external one I will use for TimeMachine.  Also, how do I make a bootable "rescue" drive or disk if my hard drive fails and I want to install a new one?  Will a "rescue USB flash drive" -- bootable  with the operating system (Mountain Lion) in it -- in conjunction with Time Machine on the external drive restore a new hard drive (MacHD) to what was on the old one?  Finally, how does one make a rescue (bootable) USB flash drive with OSX 10.8.2 on it?
    Mike

Try going system preferences>time machine.select disk>highlight the disk, click use for back up (make sure the padlock is unlocked.  If this has already been done there might be a problem with the disk.  Go to utililites>disk utilities highlight the disk click verify disk.

    - Transfer iTunes purchases to the computer by:
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer
    - Transfer any other music by using a third-party program like one of those discussed here:
    Copy music
    - Connect the iPod to the computer and make a backup by right clicking on the iPod under Devices in iTunes and select Back Up
    - Restore the iPod from that backup. The restore will also update the iOS.
Note that the backup that iTunes makes does not include synced media like apps and music

With the amount of information you've provided it's impossible to offer a potential solution.  We can't see your computer so we need to know some details of your problem and setup, i.e.:
what version of iPhoto are you using?
what system version are you running?
    what fixes have you tried?
    where is you library located?
did you apply any updates or upgrades just prior to the problem occurring?
are you running a "managed" or "referenced" library?
    what type of Mac?
how much free space on your boot drive?

You can't do a backup of icloud to an external drive.  In fact, does your post have anything to do with icloud (you're in the icloud forum)?
What kind of "system backup" are you doing?  Are you using Time Machine?

    Hello,
If i read your question correctly you are asking about how uncommited transaction are rolled back. For this, concept of transaction log came into picture.where first changes were first made to transaction log and then into memory .Before any change is made
to real data file change is made to trn log files so that if rollback comes it can see in log and rollback it.
