What does a startup upgrade internally?

Hi,
Does some know what "startup upgrade" in Oracle 10g internally does? In the alert log I see the following:
ALTER SYSTEM enable restricted session;
MMNL started with pid=12, OS id=3872
Fri Jan 22 10:26:35 2010 ALTER SYSTEM SET systemtrig_enabled=FALSE SCOPE=MEMORY;
Autotune of undo retention is turned off.
Fri Jan 22 10:26:35 2010 ALTER SYSTEM SET undoautotune=FALSE SCOPE=MEMORY;
Fri Jan 22 10:26:35 2010 ALTER SYSTEM SET undo_retention=900 SCOPE=MEMORY;
Fri Jan 22 10:26:35 2010 ALTER SYSTEM SET aq_tm_processes=0 SCOPE=MEMORY;
Resource Manager disabled during database migration: plan '' not set
Fri Jan 22 10:26:35 2010 ALTER SYSTEM SET resource_manager_plan='' SCOPE=MEMORY;
replication_dependency_tracking turned off (no async multimaster replication found)
Completed: ALTER DATABASE OPEN MIGRATE
Fri Jan 22 10:27:00 2010 FAST_START_MTTR_TARGET 30 is out of the valid MTTR range, use 52 instead.
I wanted to trace the oracle instance with ORACLE_TRACE_ENABLE but that parameter is obsolete in 10g (is there an equivalent in 10G?) and I'm not usre that sql_trace will give all the actions of STARTUP UPGRADE.
I need to know what startup upgrade (SU) does because a customer wants reassurance that SU will not change anything in the database.
regards,
Ivan

I need to know what startup upgrade (SU) does because a customer wants reassurance that SU will not change anything in the database.If you have to open the database in upgrade mode, that's because you want to upgrade the database, which means a lot of changes in the Oracle data dictionary tables (note, no change in the user' data).
Otherwise, why wanted to open the database in that mode ?
So, the question does not make any sensee to me.
From the Oracle doc : http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14200/statements_1004.htm#SQLRF00802
"+*UPGRADE | DOWNGRADE* Use these OPEN clause parameters only if you are upgrading or downgrading a database. This clause instructs Oracle Database to modify system parameters dynamically as required for upgrade and downgrade, respectively.+"

  • What does the startup Disk do ?

    i'm a new mac user, and i still don't know what all the option on the mac does, one of those is the startup disk
    i really like to know what does the startup disk do .
    thank you

    The hard drive would need to be formatted properly and have a valid operating system on it.
    For example, if your computer shipped with OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard), the external hard drive would have to be formatted correctly and have Snow Leopard installed on it. Once the installation is completed, the drive should be bootable.

  • What does these startup messages mean?

    Hi, well today when starting up my box I noticed these two startup messages:
    :: Initiate Random Seed
    :: Removing LeftOver files
    What does these mean? And what program/service runs it? (And what 'left over files' is it removing?) I think I never see them before. Is these message appears because I just install sudo?
    Also when shutting down there is also a message concerning a Random Seed. (Saving Random Seed).  What is it doing?

    Well...  if your head over to your /etc/rc.sysinit, you'll see exactly what it does.  If I remember correctly, saving random seed is just saving your startup time because it is random, and removing leftover files is clearing out the /tmp/ directory.

  • Replaced HDD on 2006 iMac -- What does this startup screen mean?

    I installed a new HDD and now when I start up on the Snow Leopard install disk I see this screen.. What does it mean?

  • What does the weblogic.transaction.internal.CoordinatorImpl do?

    When under a moderate to heavy load I occasionally see as much as 90% of threads in one server on a cluster working on the following request:
              weblogic.transaction.internal.CoordinatorImpl
              This was as viewed in the WLS admin console. This is not causing a problem as far as I can see but I am curious what this object does and whether it is an indicator that something needs to be looked into.
              Any ideas?
              Thanks.

  • What does this startup error msg mean?

    I'm getting the following message in my console upon startup. Everything
    seems to work ok, but I'm curious as to what the weblogic.xml file is. I
    don't seem to have a copy on my installation.
    [HttpServer] : Directory e:\xxx\ does not contain WEB-INF/weblogic.xml. If
    this Web application relies on the WebLogic specific XML descriptor, this
    may result in misconfigured application.

    It looks like you deploy a Web Application and WLAS can not find
    WEB-INF/weblogic.xml. weblogic.xml has the information on how to deploy your
    Web Application on weblogic server. Refer to WLAS document on Web
    Application for details.
    Cheers - Wei

    That's right, it specifies the Storefront, or Country, where the link was created. It's actually not necessary to create a working link for a podcast; that is, your podcast would link just as well as:

    I am getting a message that states "startup disk is full".  What does this mean and how do I fix it?

    For information about the Other category in the Storage display, see this support article. If the Storage display seems to be inaccurate, try rebuilding the Spotlight index.
    Empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. If you use iPhoto, empty its internal Trash first:
              iPhoto ▹ Empty Trash
    Do the same in other applications, such as Aperture, that have an internal Trash feature. Then restart the computer. That will temporarily free up some space.
    According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation—not the mythical 10%, 15%, or any other percentage. You also need enough space left over to allow for growth of the data. There is little or no performance advantage to having more available space than the minimum Apple recommends. Available storage space that you'll never use is wasted space.
    When Time Machine backs up a portable Mac, some of the free space will be used to make local snapshots, which are backup copies of recently deleted files. The space occupied by local snapshots is reported as available by the Finder, and should be considered as such. In the Storage display of System Information, local snapshots are shown as  Backups. The snapshots are automatically deleted when they expire or when free space falls below a certain level. You ordinarily don't need to, and should not, delete local snapshots yourself. If you followed bad advice to disable local snapshots by running a shell command, you may have ended up with a lot of data in the Other category. Ask for instructions in that case.
    See this support article for some simple ways to free up storage space.
    You can more effectively use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) or GrandPerspective (GP) to explore the volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can also delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one. Note that ODS only works with OS X 10.8 or later. If you're running an older OS version, use GP.
    Deleting files inside an iPhoto or Aperture library will corrupt the library. Any changes to a photo library must be made from within the application that created it. The same goes for Mail files.
    Proceed further only if the problem isn't solved by the above steps.
    ODS or GP can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
    Back up all data now.
    If you have more than one user account, make sure you're logged in as an administrator. The administrator account is the one that was created automatically when you first set up the computer.
    Install the app you downloaded in the Applications folder as usual. Quit it if it's running.
    Triple-click anywhere in the corresponding line of text below on this page to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
    sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
    sudo /Applications/GrandPerspective.app/Contents/MacOS/GrandPerspective
    Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
    ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
    ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
    ☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
    Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V. You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator. Ignore any other messages that appear in the Terminal window.
    The application window will open, eventually showing all files in all folders, sorted by size. It may take a few minutes for the app to finish scanning.
    I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means. When in doubt, leave it alone or ask for guidance.
    When you're done with the app, quit it and also quit Terminal.

    I have an iMac using Lion. I have an icon on the dock for Fluenz software but it has a white circle around it with a white slash through it (like the international "no" sign).  What does the circle mean?  The Fluenz software seems to work ok.

    Checkout the software vendor's website for updates:

    Your only other option is to boot from an OS X 10.6 system.

  • What is difference between Startup upgrade and startup migration.

    what is difference between Startup upgrade and startup migration.

    I am having the metalink note.
    STARTUP MIGRATE was introduced in 9.2 as a mechanism to be sure that most everything that needs to be done to run an upgrade script or a patch script is done automatically. In the past, customers were expected to adjust certain initialization parameters prior to beginning an upgrade or applying a a patch,
    but most of this is now done automatically by STARTUP MIGRATE.
    When a customer starts a database in MIGRATE mode, the following ALTER SYSTEM
    commands will be set automatically:
    But i am not sure what exactly the meaning by startup upgrade.
    and exactly the startup upgrade and startup migrate
