What does a virtual tour cost to develop?

I work for a small university in the States. We're trying to
evaluate whether or not we're going to try to develop a virtual
tour in-house or sub it out. So I'm looking for some basic ballpark
estimates of what a virtual tour project would cost.
Here’s what we’re looking for in a virtual tour:
1. Chapter based organization - The tour will be divided into
six chapters with maybe four scenes within each chapter.
2. Relies heavily on video - The scenes themselves will be
short 15-30 second video clips.
3. Template driven - Obviously the project will be delivered
in Flash, but we’d also like it to be template driven,
perhaps XML so that we can update the contents without having to
touch the actual flash.
I admire sites like the Vodafone Journey Web site for its use
of video, and while we’ll probably not be able to reach this
level of quality this Web site best demonstrates where we’d
like to go:
http://www.vodafone.com/flash/journey/main_navigation.swf
So back to my original question. What’s a ballpark
estimate of what a virtual tour cost to develop?
If we do decide to sub it out we'll most likely write a
formal RFP that will likely include one of two options.
RFP Options
1. Flash work only.
The university will do all of the art direction, content
development. We will essentially hand off all of the content and
storyboards for the flash developer to create.
2. Everything
The vendor will handle the art direction, content creation
and flash development. We will provide artwork and content as
needed but the vendor will be the driving force behind the project.
If you were considering a project like this, which of the two
options would you prefer and what would you like to see outlined in
a potential RFP?
Thanks.

  • QUICKTIME 3D VIRTUAL TOURS vs JAVA VIRTUAL TOURS

    Hi guys,
I've been developing 3D Virtual Tours for my clients in Quicktime 3D Virtual Reality, but some clients have been complaining that they cannot view it.
I've heard that JAVA will work anywhere. How would I go about doing 3D Virtual Tours in JAVA? Do I have to buy new software?
ANY help would be great as I am totally new to this.
    Thanks!

I use Java Technology for my virtual tour sofware. I never tried Quicktime neither Flash. Java is a language, and what is good, it is understood by Internet Browsers ( thanks to Sun ). So the comparison with Quicktime is not straightforward. Take a look at my tours, and decide for yourself, is it worth to use Java: http://www.virtuar.com/click.htm
    I think Java is great!

  • What does it cost to make a Macbook ?

I know this may seem random, but I was wondering how much does a Macbook really cost to make? I was asking myself this when I was shopping around dell.com. They have a XPS 12" Notebook Core 2 Duo for 1200. I understand that it is a windows based computer yada yada, but the specs on the comp are double everything the Macbook has. And if they are making a profit off 1200 bucks, how much is apple making? I imagine they are laughing all the way to the bank
    Discuss.
      Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Mleb just summarized everything I was thinking
perfectly. Mind reader? The mark up for the OS is
what hurts the most. The extra cost to me is paying
for the luxury of getting local tech support
on a pretty version of Linux. And the criticism of MS
makes me laugh. I hate the OS as much as anyone else,
but where is the middle ground? Lower hardware cost
but crappy OS (MS) vs. High hardware cost and stable
OS (Mac). If ethics is the issue why am I being
charged extra for an OS that is stable? Simple. There
are no better alternatives. You have no where better
to go, and you will pay whatever cost they ask you
to. That is what has happened to the OS market. Just
look at the price of the macbook pro lol. It should
come with a bumper sticker that says Apple raped me
and I didnt even get a reach around. Yes I love macs,
I just think its a shame the way they run shop. I bet
the profit margin off apple laptops is ridiculous and
in the small chance that it is low; they are selling
so well it makes up for it. Anyways what I
really want to know is, if macs are running intel
procs, what is missing from a windows PC so that it
can run OS X ? Someone a few posts above me mentioned
firmware. I thought it would be hardware.
    Discuss.
Reading your post, I wonder if you think Apple shouldn't charge what they do for having a total system that works. The market will bear what the market will bear. It is a fact that there are exponentially more windows users than Mac, so obviously, most people are willing to sacrifice performance for cost. In the case of Mac users, they tend to see a value in having a laptop that actually works, and they're willing to pay more for it. Why shouldn't Apple charge more for that?

  • What does Application Development Runtime use oraInventory for?

    Hi everyone,
I am very new to the ADF and JDeveloper toolset, so I apologize if this is a dumb question.
I am working with Oracle BI Applications. In particular, there is a product called Spend Classification. Part of the setup is to install Oracle Application Development Runtime (http://download.oracle.com/otn/nt/middleware/11g/ofm_appdev_generic_11.1.1.2.0_disk1_1of1.zip).
During the install for that product, we ran into an error, insuffcient privildges to the oraInventory folder.
What does this software use the oraInventory folder for?
    -Joe

The oracle installer uses the oraInventory directory to keep track of what software is installed on a machine

  • What does virtual host and port mean in a system in ESB console

    Hi !
When you click on a system in ESB console you can see and change 'cluster name' , 'Virtual host' and 'Port' .
    What does this mean ?
As default the port is 8888 even though the installation uses port 80.
If I change the port, I see no difference.
    Could someone please explain ?

It is used to generate the endpoint urls in the wsdl's for the services you have deployed. It needs to be set to the esb server and port number where the services are installed. So if your esb installation uses port 80 you need to change 8888 to 80. Try the wsdl and look at the url of the endpoint.
    Kind Regards,
    Andre

  • Prohibitive costs while developing - Pause feature or pay for what you use option?

    Hi,
I am investigating using Storm on the Azure HDInsight.
I did the introductory tutorials and after a few days I saw that I had exhausted my MSDN Ultimate credit allowance since this thing needs 15 cores to function and you pay for it if it is doing work or no.
I am in development so I'm building a topology, use it for a few minutes, fix it, try something new, etc. I don't actually use the computing power for more than an hour a day, but I'm charged for 360 hours a day.
As far as I can tell there is no way to pause a storm cluster if I am not using it, or use it in some development mode that is capped for a very small usage scenario.
What is the best practice method for developing for this storm cluster? I can not justify to my boss spending 1000 dollars a month for the development of these components.
    Thanks,
    Amir

Amir0 - What technology are you using to author your topologies Java or SCP.Net
Apache Storm does support a local mode which you can utilize for developmental tasks.
    http://storm.apache.org/documentation/Local-mode.html
    In terms of best practices:
    1. In the latest HDInsight service update a user can adjust the nodes sizes, make sure you choose the smallest sizes.
    2. Deploy small 1 or 2 node clusters.
    3. In your spouts, try to check point the state to Azure Blob Storage or Zookeeper so that when you re-create a cluster or re-run the topology you can resume from last state. It will also help in using the same storage account & container for
    the multiple clusters.
    4. Automating creation or deletion of HDInsight clusters is fairly easy using the public sdk or powershell.

  • What does cost mean in execution plan?

What does a cost increase actually mean compared to the decrease of data that has to be processed?
    More details:
    I have 3 tables:
    - users
    - transaction types
    - user transactions
I'm joining user transactions with transaction types for a particular user and aggregating some result from the transaction type table.
Originally there was no index on the user transactions table containing both the user_id (on which is filtered) and the transaction id. This lead to a TABLE ACCESS and joining a lot of data for nothing. I created an index to contain both fields so that no more TABLE ACCESS is needed. It indeed reduced the amount of data to be merged and aggregated considerably, but the COST of the query went up! This I don't understand. (the query itself did not seem to take more/less time).
What does a cost increase actually mean compared to the decrease of data that has to be processed?
Below are the two execution plans:
Execution plan with low cost and table access.
    0 SELECT STATEMENT Optimizer=CHOOSE (Cost=51 Card=1 Bytes=33)
    1 0 SORT (AGGREGATE)
    2 1 HASH JOIN (Cost=51 Card=283759 Bytes=9364047)
3 2 TABLE ACCESS (BY INDEX ROWID) OF 'THIRD_PARTY_TRANSACT
    IONS' (Cost=2 Card=448 Bytes=8960)
4 3 INDEX (RANGE SCAN) OF 'X_TP_TRANSACTIONS_USER' (NON-
    UNIQUE) (Cost=1 Card=448)
5 2 INDEX (FAST FULL SCAN) OF 'X_ISP_TRANSACTIONS_TRID_FIN
    AL' (NON-UNIQUE) (Cost=4 Card=63339 Bytes=823407)
Execution plan with only index join but high cost
    0 SELECT STATEMENT Optimizer=CHOOSE (Cost=272 Card=1 Bytes=28)
    1 0 SORT (AGGREGATE)
    2 1 HASH JOIN (Cost=272 Card=3287 Bytes=92036)
3 2 INDEX (FAST FULL SCAN) OF 'X_TP_TRANSACTIONS_TRID_USER
    ID' (NON-UNIQUE) (Cost=21 Card=3287 Bytes=49305)
4 2 INDEX (FAST FULL SCAN) OF 'X_ISP_TRANSACTIONS_TRID_FIN
    AL' (NON-UNIQUE) (Cost=4 Card=63339 Bytes=823407)

when oracle parses and optimises a query it creates several execution plans and assigns a cost to each plan.
It then uses this cost to compare these plans.
But you can't use this cost as an indication of how "heavy" a query is, nor can you compare the costs between different queries.
It is only a value used internally by oracle.
    greetings
    Freek D
