What does ACL mean in Verify Permissions?
I have been having problems since upgrading from Panther to Leopard on December 12 of 08. I think I have the majority of them addressed... I am running the disk utility and verifying and repairing permissions 2 times per month, emptying caches almost every day, and zapping the PRAM in order to address constant freeze-ups on startup... sometimes at the blue screen and sometimes the wheel just keeps turning, turning, turning, etc., but it still happens daily. Any ideas why on this one?
Now I am getting this message when verifying permissions:
ACL found, but not expected on "Applications/Utilities"
ACL found, but not expected on "Applications"
ACL found, but not expected on "Library"
What does ACL mean and why is it not expected?
Any answers? It would be appreciated.
Hi! Most have found that if they download the new combo update and reapply the update the acl messages in repair permissions disappear and the report will be clean for the first time. Tom

What does it mean @ in the permit status of a file?
I have never seen the @ symbol in the status of a file.
This is an excerpt of a directory listing in my iMac:
~$ ls -ltr | grep @
-rw-r--r--@ 1 casianorodriguezleon staff 12107 14 nov 10:58 object-design.png
-rw-r--r--@ 1 casianorodriguezleon staff 16777 27 dic 09:08 parrotify_logo.png
-rw-r--r--@ 1 casianorodriguezleon staff 2791 3 ene 15:17 defaultlogo.png
-rw-r--r--@ 1 casianorodriguezleon staff 3945 16 mar 11:31 logo.jpg
-rw-r--r--@ 1 casianorodriguezleon staff 300352 17 mar 08:58 Descargas alias
I guess it is s.t. related to fileVault, since it appeared after
I set fileVault in my account.
Does anyone knows the meaning of '@' at the end of the status?Take a look here:

What does it mean when REPAIRING PERMISSIONS just hangs indefinetly?
I'm running Repairing Permissions and it just stops a little before halfway
through the process. It stops progressing.
Is it fixing something and if I leave it alone for an hour or so will it eventually
move on, or is the fact that it keeps stopping in that one spot usually
mean there is a serious hard drive problem?
It's a G4 1.6 powerbook, running 10.3.9. And it's running really slow, so
I'm trying to repair permissions to see if that will help.hi brvideo,
repairing permissions is not likely to speed your machine up.... i would start off by rebooting, and just before the chime hold down the command and S keys at the same time. your machine will boot into single-user mode (black screen with ascii text on it)...
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106388
then type /sbin/fsck -fy and hit return.
are any errors seen? if so, enter that command again. if it looks like they got fixed, then enter reboot to restart...
post back with the results.... cheers -
I am re-installing itunes on a PC Win 7 and have the message: "apple mobile device failed to start verify that you have sufficient privilegesto start system services" what does this mean? how do I check and rectify? I am already logged onto the PC as administrator
I am having this same problem. I took Kappy advice on restarting the Apple Mobile Device Service, however that did not work. I got this message in a pop up window that came up immediately.

Error 1053 The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.
I have already uninstalled itunes, all the related programs and I cannot reinstall, this Apple Mobil Device message stops the install.

Hello DEstadt,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
For more information on this, take a look at:
iTunes 11.1.4 for Windows: Unable to install or open
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS5376
Check for .dll files
Go to C:\Program Files (x86)\iTunes and C:\Program Files\iTunes and look for .dll files.
If you find QTMovie.DLL, or any other .dll files, move them to the desktop.
Reboot your computer.
Note: Depending on your operating system, you may only have one of the listed paths.
Uninstall and reinstall iTunes
Uninstall iTunes and all of its related components.
Reboot your computer. If you can't uninstall a piece of Apple software, try using the Microsoft Program Install and Uninstall Utility.
Re-download and reinstall iTunes 11.1.4.
Best of luck,

I am trying to update itunes to 11.1.1.11 and keep getting message at the end ' error writing to file :c:\Config.Msi\301ded48.rbf.Verify that you have access to that directory'. What does this mean and how do I fix it?
I had this exact same problem just now, trying to upgrade to 10.7.
I even got that error msg when trying to UNINSTALL iTunes!
After hours of frustration trying everyone's different suggestions, I downloaded Revo Uninstaller http://www.cnet.com.au/apps/revo-uninstaller-10610875/ which solved the problem.
Use it to help uninstall iTunes and related software components in the following order and then restart your computer:
1. iTunes
2. QuickTime
3. Apple Software Update
4. Apple Mobile Device Support
5. Bonjour
6. Apple Application Support (iTunes 9 or later)
Then you can install iTunes from scratch.
Good luck -
What does this mean...Group 0 should be 80?
Some say Group 80 should be 0?It just means the item is assigned to the wrong owner. 0 is the OS, 80 is the admin user. So the item's permissions were improperly assigned to the OS as the owner rather than the admin account.

I tried to download the latest OSX for my iMac - Mountain Lion.
This is the message that I received:
"We could not complete your purchase. The product distribution file could not be verified. It may be damaged or was not signed."
What does this mean? The only thing that worked for me was to boot in safe mode.
Power down. Then press power button and hold 'shift' key until grey screen with progress bar appears... Once booted and logged in just open safari and browse to applestore.
No trouble at all once I did this.
Reminder: create full backup before you upgrade OS
Hope it helps. -

when I try to update Firefox I get a window saying it can't be loaded because I do not have all the necessary permissions. What does this mean and what do I do?
If there are problems with updating or with the permissions then easiest is to download the full version and trash the currently installed version to do a clean install of the new version.
Download a new copy of the Firefox program and save the DMG file to the desktop
* Firefox 6.0.x: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all.html
* Trash the current Firefox application to do a clean (re-)install
* Install the new version that you have downloaded
Your profile data is stored elsewhere in the Firefox Profile Folder, so you won't lose your bookmarks and other personal data.
