What does Bonjour do?

Simple enough (but stupid) question. I understand it has a role in sharing music on itunes and stuff with printing, but Apple doesn't really say much

Hello,
Basically, it is Apple's method of "auto discovering" devices and other equipment that you can talk to (computers, printers, etc.).
Here's a article discussing it:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bonjour
Hope this helps.

  • What exactly does Bonjour do on windows?

i dont get it. is it only really good for sharing a printer? that's sort of weak. i am trying to set it up for my mom, so she will be able to access files on her desktop in the den when she is in her room on her laptop. with two apples this is easy to do when sharing is turned on. i thought that's what bonjour did for windows machines. i bragged all about it and now i cannot get it to work. i tried for hours this weekend to set up a home workgroup, or whatever, on xp and it was a nightmare!!! i cant stand windows. anyway, does bonjour do what i think it can? or am i delusional?
    thanks!

Your question may be answered here..
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/bonjourforwindows103.html
You are right, in that it only seems to share printers. Not sure why it didn't work for you, but read that there is Java that needs to be installed, and there are issues with firewalls that could be an issue. Also, the verions of Windows supported are specific. Make sure your mom's machine meets them.
Also, it says it doesnt' share Windows based printers (like your mom couldn't share her printer using it). It's apparently only for printers being shared by a Mac, with specific OS X requirements.
Also, most shared printers don't end up supporting All in One (fax, scan, print) printers. That is a common problem. Your mom may end up only printing with it.
    hope it helps.

Bonjour keeps generating error event 100 in windows 8.1 event viewer. It's there 128 times in a week! What does it mean?

    Hey Michael,
That error could be cause by a conflict with the firewall on your computer. Take a look at the articles below to go over some troubleshooting as well as verifying that Bonjour was properly installed on your computer.

thank you thank you for taking an interest. this is so frustrating.
i only have apple keyboard, mighty mouse, and 20 inch cinema display connected. this morning took out memory and tried to boot up with individual pairs in the first bank. first the (2)256, the (2) 1g, and then the other (2) 1g modules. everytime I get the weird fuzzy wheel under the logo after a while, black screen flashes, then grey apple logo fuzzy screen then black forever.
I ran tiger updates this morn. still will only boot to safe mode. then tried to run leopard disk to install it
will not boot from leopard disk.
tried safe boot, then doulble click install leopard, restart, then the saga repeats with the pixely red square around the wheel.
these are fresh drives with only what came on instll disk loaded.
thanks again for taking an interest.
i love this system(well at least i did). I want to install leopard on my powerbook too but am terrified to do so right now since it is working and I have work to do. Can't afford to have no computer to do my work on...self employment is great?!
This is making me crazy. I anxiously await your words of wisdom.

  • What does service "Apple Mobile Device" failed to start mean?

What does service "Apple Mobile Device" failed to start mean? I have been trying to download the new version and a message says please verify that you have sufficient prvileges to start system.

    Hey Michael13504,
First, I would try the steps in here:
How to restart the Apple Mobile Device Service (AMDS) on Windows
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1567
If you end up having to remove and reinstall iTunes, make sure you follow all of the steps in this link:
Removing and reinstalling iTunes and other software components for Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1923
This section contains information that might help your situation, as the order and manner which you uninstall has an effect on the outcome:
Use the Control Panel to uninstall iTunes and related software components in the following order and then restart your computer:
    iTunes
    Apple Software Update
    Apple Mobile Device Support
    Bonjour
Apple Application Support (iTunes 9 or later)
Important: Uninstalling these components in a different order, or only uninstalling some of these components may have unintended affects.
Let us know if following that article and uninstalling those components in that order helped the situation.

  • I am trying to update itunes to 11.1.1.11 and i keep getting 'erreo writing to file : C\ : Config.Ms\301ded48.rfb.Verify that you have access to that directory'. What does this mean and how can i fix it?

I am trying to update itunes to 11.1.1.11 and keep getting message at the end ' error writing to file :c:\Config.Msi\301ded48.rbf.Verify that you have access to that directory'. What does this mean and how do I fix it?

I had this exact same problem just now, trying to upgrade to 10.7.
I even got that error msg when trying to UNINSTALL iTunes!
After hours of frustration trying everyone's different suggestions, I downloaded Revo Uninstaller http://www.cnet.com.au/apps/revo-uninstaller-10610875/ which solved the problem.
Use it to help uninstall iTunes and related software components in the following order and then restart your computer:
    1. iTunes
    2. QuickTime
    3. Apple Software Update
    4. Apple Mobile Device Support
    5. Bonjour
    6. Apple Application Support (iTunes 9 or later)
Then you can install iTunes from scratch.
    Good luck

  • Finished Editing - What does everyone export to?

    Hey
I have just been playing around with exporting to different formats when the edit had been completed. There are loads of formats available when you use the Quick Time Conversion - What does everyone here use??
Ofcourse for different applications you will use different formats. But im curious as to what formats people use the most, and what one they use for what application??
I am finding that when exporting HD footage, you can lose much of the film quality - unless you wait the hour or so for it to encode it into a Quicktime film.
I look forward to hearing what you have to say. . .
    Thanks

    Hi(Bonjour)!
Keep in mind that a HD content converted to a SD (Standard definition) format will loose quality because resolution is 6 times smaller in a SD format. C'est la vie.
When I do "HD" in FCE, I print to tape my finished project on a "final program" tape, I keep source tape with all non-video material on CD or data DVD to make further edit in futur.
I can export with quicktime (not self-contained) and drag the resulting file in a Standard screen DVD project. The conversion process will occur within iDVD. I'll get a standard DVD for use in home.
**When my goal is to produce a SD DVD right from start, I downconvert HDV material from my Camcorder -Sony FX1- upon capturing process. It's faster and more reliable than convert HDV within iDVD-PAY ATTENTION TO WIDE SCREEN ISSUES.
I can export with quicktime conversion to H.264 with full or half size frame dimensions and burn a CD or data DVD or leave a copy on your hard drive. (HD content on Quicktime's web site is compressed with H.264)
Finally, I use Flip4Mac studio to make some kinds of WMF files for my PC friends.

  • What does MyBookLive do?

I haven't used iTunes in a bit and noticed the 'MyBookLive' tab. I clicked on it to see what it was/ what it does but it's just been loading for a while now and it doesn't show me anything.
So my question is this: What does MyBookLive do?
Also, is there a way that I can make it stop loading or will I just have to wait it out?

    About Bonjour

what does it do and how does it work?

it is automatically on your mac mini...you don't need to download anything, unless an update comes, but your Software Update will remind you about it...also, what it is is software that allows you to listen, view, and watch music, photos, and videos off of other computers on your wireless network

  • What is bonjour service

What is bonjour and do i need it

None of that should have any relationship to the Bonjour service, which is related to iTunes Sharing (Bonjour is what your computer will use to automatically find and display other computers with iTunes Sharing turned on). Something else is almost certainly going on. Perhaps the information and suggestions in this Apple KnowledgeBase article will help:

  • TS3694 R6034 what does this mean?

i tried to update itunes and then it came up with an error message of runtime error r6034 - what does this mean

    Do the following:
Uninstall from Windows the following four programs: iTunes, Apple Software Update, Apple Mobile Device Support, Bonjour and Apple Application Support. You do this from an applet in Control Panel called Programs & Features (in Windows 8, 7, or Vista) or Add or Remove Programs (in Windows XP).
Download the latest version of iTunes from Apple and note the location you're saving it to so you can find it once it's done.
Run the iTunes installation as an administrator, just Right click iTunes installer and Run as Administrator.

  • In relation to Wireless Speakers, what does 'Connected Music Server' mean?

    Hello All,
Need some advise. I am looking at purchasing a Wireless speaker. I currently have a MacBook Pro 10.8 which has my music stored in iTunes. My phone is an Android 4.2.2 device.
Therefore, I need to buy a wireless speaker that supports AirPlay (aka stream music from my MacBook Pro) and also has an app that I can install on my Android device which can threby access the iTunes playlist so that I can use my phone as the remote control.
Based on the above requirements, I narrowed down my chocie to the Denon Cocoon Home (whose app is also Deno Cocoon) and the Pioneer A4 XW-SMA4-K (whose app is Pioneer ControlApp)
    Question 1:
    The Denon App says this:
    - When connected to your home Wi-Fi network you can further expand your choice of music by using the Music Server to browse and play all the music that is stored on your PC, Mac or Network Attached Storage (NAS) drive.
    - DRM protected music is NOT supported by the Denon Cocoon app (or any 3rd party music app)
My question what does one mean by a 'connected music server?' If an AirPlay speaker receives iTunes music, does it automatically become a 'connected music server?' Technically, is music in my iTunes app (some purchased from iTunes store, some imported) considered DRM protected music? Can ithe app read the iTunes music given the above contraint?
    Question 2:
The Pioneer App has a lot of complicated lingo that says:
    Network Audio Player
    - Browse and select music files on your connected music server
    AV Receiver
    - Browse and select music files on your connected music server
    Network CD Receiver System
    - Browse and select music files on your connected music server
    Wireless Speaker
    - Volume up/down
    - Select Internet Radio Stations
    - PUSH PLAYER
It uses one app for multiple devices and in the app description has a breakdown for what the app supports for every device. Now the 'connected music server' is not mentioned in 'Wireless Speaker' but the same is mentioned in 'Network Audio Player' so what does that mean?
I am more veered towards the Pioneer speaker as it costs $100 less and has better reviews but I will go with the one that will aloow me to use my Android phone as a remote control to access the music that the speaker is streaming from my MacBook pro.
