What does 'CPU Power Management' BIOS setting do?

On many threads people (and Lenovo tech support) have recommended disabling 'CPU Power Management' in BIOS as a workaround for the common high-pitched noise problem. I assume this negatively affect battery life, but am wondering if anyone knows what exactly the option does and by how much disabling it hurts battery life.
Thanks,
Josh

Does it prevent all CPU state changes or only certain ones (e.g., C3/C4)? And does it have any other affect? I ask because Lenovo tech suport disabled it to combat a whining noise and I'd like to understand the implications. Also, if it just is altering CPU state changes, I think that can be accomplished in software.
Thanks

• Disabling "CPU Power Management" through BIOS -- any bad consequences?

Ok, so my new T440S is emitting a most annoying high-pitched noise. After doing some research, I come to the conclusion that it is the so called CPU Whine.
According to the diagnostics provided on this page:
http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/T400-T500-and-newer-T-series/T510-T410-W510-ThinkPad-high-pitched-whine/...
Disabling CPU Power Management may silence the noise - as a diagnotic measure, not a solution (as the post asks the user to contact Lenovo support for assistance).
So I tried that and indeed it silences the annoying whine. I have already contacted Lenovo and they said they will get back to me after Christmas. Meanwhille, I am still using this computer, and I am keeping the setting for CPU Power Management Disabled, until Lenovo solves the noise problem.
I was wondering if this (keeping the CPU Power Management disabled) may have some bad consequences - like melting some parts down or something. Would anyone know?
Thanks!

Hi yinslaptop!
I have good news. I have the same problem. My T440s is completely quiet at 43 °C CPU so I don't need any fans to spin. However there is a slight buzz coming out of the middle of the laptop. And it isn't coming from the speakers nor the fan. I didn't bother to open it up yet and check what is causing that noise, but I guess it's related to some coil whine or voltage leakage. As in your case, when I turn off the CPU Power Management option in the BIOS, the sound dissapears completely.
HOWEVER I conicidentally put one SD Card Adapter into the Card Slot and the sound completely dissapeared. I would say give it a try. Sadly the sound comes back in 20 seconds at my machine, but I am using a Sd card adapter with no card in there. Maybe this will change when I put one in. Have to test, because I don't have one lying around.
Lenovo has done a great job. You could to better at this price range, especially when the pc market is shrinking .. it's survival of the fittest. You will see what I mean when you won't get foothold in US and Europe anymore and only will supply Asia.
You won't probably answer this thread and when you do "awww yes, we are deeply sorry, some level buzz is completely normal" CTRL+V bull**bleep**.
Don't get me wrong. I really like the new T440s as my first ThinkPad, but my high order of quality wasn't meet. However I still bought it, because I needed one laptop with really good battery life, good screen and small footprint. Well sorry for the rant.

• W520 freeze caused by "CPU power managment in BIOS"

I have been running my Thinkpad W520 seemlessly for the past 4 years.
It started to freeze last monday on win7. Freezes increased rapidly and then occured at logon.
I was able to run win7 in safe mode.
Unable to reinstall win7 or even ubuntu.
Unplugged all peripheral without any succes, then disabled everything in the BIOS (1.41) and it worked again.
It looks like the "CPU power management" causes the freezes. with it disabled, everything is running back.

If I am not wrong, none other than reduced battery life.
For SSD, you could try PerfectDisk and use SSD Optimize to improve 4K read / write performance

• Efficiency of CPU Power Management (T510)

Hello and sorry in advance for my average english,
i bought a ThinkPad T510 and I had the same problem like many others.
A whitsling noise appeared when I disconnected the charger.
As read on many websites, I deactivated "CPU Power Management" in the BIOS.
And actually the noise disappeared.
Now i've got the question, if there's a big difference between the settings "Automatic" and "Disabled".
How fast gets the battery empty?
I want to decide, if I endure the annoying noise (if the difference is big) or not.
Thanks in advance,
eXtense

Hi
Changing the CPU Power Management does not make the much difference in battery backup.
However, I will advice you to update the BIOS of the notebook which will keep the system working fine.
Best Regards,
Tanuj

• T60p - Chirping noise with CPU power management

I've bought a T60p which produces a chirping noise when running on battery. The high frequency noise is disturbing when working with the device, especially in silent surroundings.
I've already contacted the Lenovo Support and they advised me to turn off CPU power management in the BIOS which indeed removes the noise. However, the cost is a significantly reduced battery time.
First the Lenovo guys offered me a high capacity battery to compensate the shorter run time but then they refused and stated that my computer "works as designed" and that "Lenovo doesn't accept warranty".
I can't believe that this is true. IBM and the ThinkPads have been recognized for their excellent quality and customer service for many years. That's why I bought a TP despite it was way more expensive than other Notebooks. Is Lenovo really not interested in keeping the excellent reputation that IBM formerly had? I'd be very interested in a statement of a Lenovo official on this issue...

> every CD/C2D processor makes this noise regardless of notebook manufacturer.
Nope, not every. There are C2D ThinkPads and other manufacturer notebooks without this defect. Sometimes noise level is higher, sometimes lower, sometimes completely silent if you are lucky enough...
amaso, I have the same problem on my brand new T60p, and found a better solution. Try to download RMClock and disable PopUp mode in CPU advanced settings. This eliminated the noise for me and power management still is working.

• Brightness, Power manager, bios question

I am having issues installing the power manager for my g530 laptop. I've tried to install he windows 7, xp, and vista drivers with no success, I even ran each different driver in compatibility / administration mode. In addition, not having a proper power driver, I assume thats why I cant adjust my brightness.
So. Ive heard that that updating my bios will fix this, however Ive read posts that claim that when updating the bios, people have had problems with slow boot time, 2-3 minutes till the levovo screen pops up.
I don't want to risk updating my bios if this problem still exists.

Solved:
I also have a G530 and recently upgraded to Windows 7 Ultimate (Final Retail Version). All drivers were automatically installed but the scroll on the touchpad didn't work and I also found that the FN+ F10/F11 for brightness control was also not working
A Bios update got my brightness controls working and the touchpad driver got my scroll working. Click on the link below for the updates you need.

• For what does the BPEL Manager need a domain ?

For what does the BPEL engine need a domain ?
Where (in which file) is specified to which domain the BPEL Manager
connects to?
Is it a difference if the domains are defined in table
orabpel.domain
or just
domain
? With which user/password/service does to BPEL Manager connect to
Oracle DB to search for its domain?
Background: My domain "default" exists in table but BEPL Manager could not connect here

We currently have 3 domains for BPEL. We use them because they a) serve different purposes, b) we tweak the domain level threads.
I believe bpel manager will, by default, connect to the which ever domain starts with the letter closest to A.
I also think the user account is orabpel, which connects to the bpel schema.

• Macbook Late 2011 freezing, problem with CPU power management.

Hi everyone.
I have Macbook Pro 15 Late 2011. And i have a problem with it.
When laptop is cold, sometimes, it can freeze. Other then this there's no problems with it, no problems at all.
I solved this problem by deleting AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext, so for now it's getting a little hotter (not very).
And my question: is there any utility or app, which could let me see what AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext is doing with system, so i could see what causing freezes. I don't have apple services in my country, so i can't bring this laptop to repair.
And if you don't know answer to this question, but know forum, where i might find answers, please write it.
Thanks in advance.
Sorry for language, i'm not an english speaking.

Catfish, if you're on AC power, and you don't run with a fully charged battery in the machine, then it won't run at full performance. Plus, if the battery is worn out, then it won't charge to nearly its original full capacity, and thus the machine won't run at full performance on AC power.
Note that, if you leave the battery in a drawer for months without using it, that can kill the battery.
Good luck!

• What does the engineer do to set up BT Infinity?

Hi,
I have to be at work when the engineer comes to set up my BT inifnity (I currently have normal BT broadband) so my Mum has offered to sit in my house.
What do they actually do? I've always set up my own internet before, never needed an engineer.
Do they need access to my laptop or are they simply fiddling with sockets etc? I'm pretty sure I could set it up myself on my computer as long as the sockets and the line is working and I don't want an engineer on my laptop without me being there?
Thanks

Hi
It looks from your comments, as if you have not looked at the BT web site to see the basics of what is required for Infinity.
Please don't take this as a critism, it's a fact a lot of posters ask questions on the forum without carrying out any research.
I have attached a drawing that was for a query a few months ago that cover many of the requirements - please appreciate that I do not work for BT, this sketch has not been approved by BT and you use the information from it at your own risk.
Good Luck

• What does cpu intensive mean?

I downloaded free trial of adobe audition 3, when trying to remove vocals to make karaoke song a message came up saying cpu intensive
can anyone please tell me what this means, and the vocals where still there.

Thanks for all the info,
I tried remove vocals from various sources without success,so I guess
this programme isn't any good for what i am trying to do or maybe it,s me.

CPU Intensive warnings come up when using effects that are not suited for real-time use. This means it's fine to use the effect on a file where you don't mind waiting a few minutes for it to do its thing, but you wouldn't want to plug the effect into a track and try to remove vocals from a microphone you're singing into. It requires the computer to do too much calculation and it wouldn't be able to keep up.
As for why your vocals were still there, vocal removal is a very complicated procedure, and honestly more often than not, you won't get satisfactory results. When a song is mixed, often the vocal portion is placed in a very specific portion of the stereo field - usually right in the center so that both ears hear it equally. When this is the case, you can usually isolate and remove this portion of the audio if you can determine where in that stereo field it is located. Other songs, however, may spread the vocals out more broadly, process it with several effects that migrate around the stereo field, or even use multiple recordings of the same vocals in different locations. This makes it much more difficult, as close to impossible as can be without fully committing myself, to accurately remove the vocals without affecting a significant portion of the rest of the track.

• What does the Certificate Manager do?

There are tons of Certificates (some government affiliated). Can I remove these or at least find out their association is? (ie. they are for xxxx website that you visited on xx/xxxx). Is there something that tells me if a certificate is permanent or part of the computer. This is all very scary.

See:
*https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/about/governance/policies/security-group/certs/policy/maintenance/
You can only disable built-in root certificates by removing their trust bits (click the Edit button) to make it impossible to use them as root certificate.
You may want to disable SSL3 for now until this vulnerability is addressed if you are concerned.

You can set the security.tls.version.min to 1 on the about:config page to disable SSL3 and only have TLS 1.0 and later enabled.
You may need to close and restart Firefox after changing these prefs.
* security.tls.version.min = 1
* http://kb.mozillazine.org/security.tls.version.*
0 means SSL 3.0, 1 means TLS 1.0, 2 means TLS 1.1, 3 means TLS 1.2 etc.
Note that you may have to reset the pref and re-enable SSL3 in case you experience issues with accessing websites via a secure connection.

• What does the power adaptor look like?

Did Apple make any changes to the power adaptor? Is it thinner too? I am waiting a month or two for the 1.6 MBA regardless of changes.

The Mag-safe connector is physically the same. A MBP or MB adapter will physically and electronically work with the MBA. However, since the MBA's port is facing down, you will need to account for this when using an MBp or MB adapter, either by charging the MBA upside down or some other fashion.
the physical size of the MBA adapter looks smaller than the MB adapter, but this will still be unanswered until someone can compare them in person.
The power output for the different adapters are:
MBA: 45 watt
MB: 60 watt
MBP: 85 watt
You can use an MB adapter to charge an MBP, but the battery will charge very slowly.
You can use the MBP adapter to charge a MB. It will not send the full 85 watts.
Apple can not warrant or guarantee no problems when using a different adapter than intended so do this at your own risk.
