What does "delete oldest backup" mean?

My chief interest in Time Machine is to backup the User file, especially the iPhoto library. I've also backed up the applications. Presently, I am using my Lacie 160 GB hard drive, and the backup uses only about 113 GB. The only substantial additions as time goes on will be photos. Time Machine says it will delete the earliest backups when the disk is full. But i am confused as to what that actually means. I presume it is checking the User file daily and then backing up only what is new. Sooooo, the original backup of photos would only be updated every day — and the original backup would still be available (with intervening additions) in the most recent backup . Is that correct? I guess what I am asking is whether I have anything to worry about as the disk gets full and a deletion takes place.

If you have room, please consider letting Time Machine back up your entire system. That's what it was designed for, and protects you best that way.

In a word, no.
Time Machine backups are very different from traditional backups. After the first full backup, yes, it only backs-up what's new or changed since the last one. But it makes "hard links" (sort of like aliases) to the backups of the things that didn't change. That means that every backup is, in effect, a full backup, and is how TM can show you a "snapshot" of your entire system the way it was at the time of any backup.
When it deletes a backup, it deletes that set of "hard links." The only time an actual backup copy is deleted is when there are no more links to it (meaning, it was not on your system at the time of any remaining backup).
So TM will always have backups of the current contents of your Mac, plus previous versions of things you've changed or deleted for as long as there's room.

What does "on my mac" mean and how do i delete or reduce the number?

    Hi ya
I'm seeing this on my email screen, on the left hand side - under the "RSS Apple".  The number of items in there is now 752.  It's preventing me from sending and receiving emails in my AOL account.
Any  help would be deeply appreciated.
    Thank you.

  • Time Machine deletes oldest backups?!

So I'm starting to use Time Machine, now that my tape drive went south. I decided to rotate drives and use Time Machine.
I'm reading threads about rotating drives and it seems straight forward. Swap drive, tell Time Machine to use the drive that you swapped in.
    Two questions:
    1. Does Time Machine know that the 2nd and subsequent backups are incremental?
    2. Is there a way to set Time Machine to ask *BEFORE* it starts deleting files?
Time Machine is cool. No doubt. What's not cool is how we have to jump through hoops to get decent backups, with very little "best practice" guidance from Apple.
I want to swap drives and hot have to poke through System Preferences > Time Machine each time I do.
I don't want to worry about being told *AFTER* the fact that Time Machine "deleted files to make space" which is absurd.
System Preferences > Time Machine > Options > [x] Notify after old backups are deleted
It's unacceptable that Time Machine does not warn *BEFORE* deleting oldest backups. That's a decision only the user should make.

If you swap drives, Time Machine SHOULD be intelligent enough to know where to begin (based on what's on the drive). But it's not.
Yes, it is.  A new drive will, of course, get a new full backup.  Thereafter, if you swap drives, Time Machine will back up the changes made since the last backup to that particular drive, independent of any others.
If you swap, say, once a week, the first backup after the swap will be relatively long, of course, as there's a lot to "catch up."  Time Machine might even have to do a "deep traversal," comparing everything on your system to the backups, which takes a while, too, but it will catch up.
So the issue of data being deleted automatically (where users are only told AFTER data is deleted) is still unresolved.
And it will remain the way it is; Apple clearly changed it because the downside to having backups fail was much larger than the after-the-fact notification.  There were many, many threads in the Leopard forums where folks didn't understand or didn't heed the messages, and ended up with outdated backups when their HDs failed or were hopelessly corrupted.
And the issue of swapping drives being quite tedious is STILL an issue.
Yes, and there's no indication that will be changed, either.  Apple seems to want to keep things as simple as possible.  There are some workarounds, none entirely successful.  Here's one: http://www.gearz.de/howto/OSX5/changeTMvol-sh-X6
can't wait for Lion to be released so we can see if things got any better.
There's no indication of anything like the things you're looking for in any of the published documents or even the rumor sites.  That's all I can say.
While Time Machine has some elements of a traditional "Archive" type backup app, it just basically isn't one.  Never has been, never will be.  The main audience is the novice to casual user, or even the power user, who either won't, or doesn't want to, manage backups.
If you really want an traditional archive type system, get one.  You can't make Time Machine into one.
See Kappy's post on Basic Backup for links to a number of various types.

  • I have many photos that are visible as thumbnails in the Pictures Library, however when I try to open them in a big screen they show a back screen with an exclamation mark in a triangle.  What does this exclamation mark mean ?

I can see my images in the libarary as thumbnails but when i try to edit/email some of them become Exclamation Marks in a triangle.
What does the exclamation mark mean and how to i retrieve the photo

The exclamation make is an indication that iPhoto has broken the file path to the original photo.
Make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • What does the exclamation point mean next to a song that is unchecked?

what does the exclamtion point mean next to a song that is unchecked?

If you hover over the exclamation mark (or you may need to click on it, I can't remeber), it should tell you. Usually, it means that the original file (for that song) cannot be found, either because it has been moved, renamed or deleted.

  • What does this error message mean and how do I solve it? "Sorry, one or more of the following command-line tools was not found:  /usr/bin/lsbom, /bin/pax, /bin/mkdir, /bin/chmod, or /usr/bin/update_prebinding."

When I try to open up this program, Pacifist, I receive this error message. Here's a screenshot. http://i.imgur.com/v717w.jpg What does this error message mean and how do I solve it?

It sounds like some of the Unix Executable commands were removed (or the permissions to those were modified) out of the /usr/bin/ folder.  You can try opening disk utility and repairing permissions on Macintosh HD or you can reboot your computer and holding down option-r when it comes back up to reinstall Lion again.  This will not delete your personal information or applications you have installed but it would be best to back it up to Time Machine before you do.  The article on how to do this is here. (http://www.apple.com/macosx/recovery/)  I have had to do this before and it works like a charm.  It should fix your issue but grab a cup of coffee because its going to take about 35 - 40 minutes depending on how fast your computer is.

It means you changed some settings for how your iPod interacts with iTunes, you can either click Apply to confirm the changes, or Revert to undo them. This does not delete any content.

I got an iphone from Hong Kong which is locked one. Can anyone explain me what does a locked iphone means. How do I use it in India now, with my own sim card. How do I unlock it???

If your iPhone is locked to a wireless provider, only that wireless provider
can unlock it. Contact the wireless provider in Hong Kong to see if they
offer unlocking and if you qualify.
If your iPhone is locked to an AppleID that you do not know, return it for
a refund as it is useless. Only the person whose AppleID was used for
activation can remove the lock. There is no workaround for Activation Lock.
If neither of the above is what you are facing, provide more detail so someone
    may offer a solution.

I was playing with my ipad settings and noted in he advanced settings of Safari there was a place to view "website databases".  When I selected this I saw a multitude of websites.
Can anyone tell me how these get there?  Can a website be posted even if it was never went to?  What does the space amount mean?  For example, 1.5 kb...is this quite a bit?  Would it indicate someone has gone to a site multiple times?
I share my ipad with my teenage daughter and I'm trying to find out if she's lying to me.  Obviously she's swearing that she has "no idea" how these got there and I'm trying to keep her safe (she's only 14).
    Thanks everyone.
    Concerned Mom

Think of your PC and the 'temporary internet folder' where it keeps cached copies of web pages or elements off a web page for 'quicker display the next time you visit'. That's pretty much what that folder is. 1.5K is tiny. Probably just a basic page with some text on it. (you might be confusing 1.5K with 1.5 megabyte....megabyte is large...it's roughly 1000 kilobytes, so the 1.5K is a tiny file)
As far as I know, the only way info gets into that folder is if the browser has been to that site.
if you have a concern there are browsers out there, McGruff is one i've seen recommended, that allow some degree of parental control and supervision. That or you could passcode lock the iPad or enable the restrictions to turn off some parts of the device to have some control.

What does (error code -600) mean?
I received this code in a pop up window while trying to open iTunes from my Apps folder.

      procNotFound

Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.
    Any change?

What application is set to open PDF files? If you CNTRL click on the file and open with Preview does the problem occur?
If not change the default application to open PDF files to Preview.
You can do this by highlighting the file and either use CMD i or Get Info , this will open a window with the info on the file with an option to change the application that opens the file.
That's all I can think of.

  • I understand that when using Numbers/Pages - an up-arrow on a document means that the file is still to be uploaded to the cloud, what does a down arrow mean? It seems the document can't be accessed until the arrow clears.

I understand that when using Numbers/Pages - an up-arrow on a document means that the file is still to be uploaded to the cloud, what does a down arrow mean? It seems the document can't be accessed until the arrow clears.

I believe what it's supposed to mean is that some changes were made to the document on another device, and those changes were saved back to the cloud.  Now you've opened iWork on a different device to access that document - it compares the document you've got locally with the one in the could, sees some recent changes and downloads them.
What gets me is why this sometimes happens even when I've not made any changes to a document from another device.
