What does Disk Warrior do?

I heard of this program called Disk Warrior. I'm interested in purchasing it from what I heard.
1) What is it's main objective for my mac?
2) Would you strongly recommend it or is it just a bonus software?
Thanks a lot.
Dorian

With all due respect to John Huber, who is a seasoned Forum contributor, I have a different opinion about this. I have no technical or progamming background but am an experienced longtime Mac user. DiskUtility (formerly Disk FirstAid) is an important tool for checking & repairs. It serves as a first line utility for dealing with disk or OS problems.
However, my experience has been that it detects only some types of problems . There are various third party products designed to address this area also: Norton System Utilities, TechTool Pro, Disk Warrior, and others. Each was designed to address specific types or ranges of problems. While there is a bit of overlap in types of tests they perform, each package has some unique features it addresses while not addressing others. Each product has its own strengths and weaknesses. There are some Mac users who will swear by one product and berate another.
I have found that the third party utilities I have used would frequently pick-up minor or latent errors even when DiskUtility reported no errors. My own experience is that no one of them was "the best" or could address all problems. One program could fix some the other did not. Consequently, my opinion and practice was to have more than one I could use. I considered the cost as good maintenance and insurance. I did not NEED them often but when I did ... they helped my repair or recover from situations that could have led to data loss (as well as major loss of time).
With regards to your specific question about Disk Warrior, I do own and use it. Compared to other utilities, DW focuses more narrowly on the disk's catalog & directory structures. And it does a very good job with this.
With Symantec dropping its support of Norton DiskDoctor or SystemWorks, the remaining choices for more comprehensive utilities are TechTool or Drive Genius -- both available thru Apple Stores.
Needless to say, don't overlook or forget the important related lesson to this ...... regularly make and safely store backups of our important data.

  • What does Disk Utility mean by saying the back up disk cannot be unmounted?

Disk utility has been giving me that error and I get about the same message when Time Machine attempts to do a back up as well. What does it mean?

Hi! When you try to do a repair on a disk it "unmounts" (removes it from the desktop) (which locks the directory) so it can be repaired. Unmounting also is required for an erase. Time Machine shouldn't be trying to unmount it for a backup in fact it could write to it if it unmounts. Tom

  • What does "Disk Full" message mean when trying to send mail?

I have recently been getting an error message when trying to send email using Entourage - "cannot send mail using this account, disk full". Quiting all applications makes no difference, get the same message. To send email again I have to restart the computer. Then everything is fine until the next time, maybe a couple of days or weeks later.
Any idea what the "disk" referred to in the message is? I have plenty of RAM (640 megs) and as I said earlier, even if I quit all open apps after getting the "disk full" message it makes no difference.
    Thanks for any suggestions!

Hello! Usually the disk full message occurs because the hard drive is at or near capacity. The message has nothing to do with apps except for the "virtual memory or paging" aspect of OSX. Restarting probably clears out the paging file and possibly some other stuff which allows you to work for a while. Select the hard drive and do a "get info" on it to see hoe much space is available on the hard drive. FREE space should be 10-20% and anything less than 10% will likely crash the computer or choke it to a slow crawl. Tom

  • What does disk utility really do ?

I downloaded a lion 10.8 dmg from internet and wanted to make a installation portable disk.
And when I loaded the dmg, and used the 'disk utility' to restore installation files to one of my disk partitions, it just failed. And what is real annoying is that I got my disk partitions after the partition lost. And I can't get my important files back.
Maybe the 'disk utility' want to change the partition to be bootable and made the partition tables damaged.
Hope someone can help me to repair the disk and make the disk utility more secure !

There is no DMG of Lion, at least not anything legal. From where did you get this file?
Well there is a DMG of both Lion and Mt Lion. But it is included in the Lion/Mt Lion OS X Install.app package files and can be copied out.
But that is Not the Operating System. It is the Install files for the operating system. Restoring that DMG would, supposedly, give you bootable media for installing the OS on a drive.
To the OP I have found that the Restore feature/function in Disk Utility doesn't always work as expected. Best thing to do is use this program for creating a Dual Layer DVD or USB thumb of the Mt Lion install files. It works every time.
Make the USB thumb as most of the, Not So, Superdrives can't really write to Dual Layer DVDs. You will be very lucky if you have a Superdrive that will actually write to Dual Layer DVDs.

  • Disk Utility - Erase Free Space-what does it really do?

    Hey Forum,
I am using mac os 10.6.4 on my macbook and i have a doubting question for quite sometimes, what does disk utility erase free space feature really do? Does it gives you more free space? or what? I know it prevents the recovery of deleted files but i want to know what more it does and do not do? Like, now my hdd free space kept increasing and decreasing, by a few 100 mbs or 50mbs etc, so do i erase free space so to solve this problem? Ok, i do not only want to know does it solve the previous problem, but also the questions stated in the whole long paragraph i have wrote. If you know anything related to disk utility's erase free space, feel free to tell me!
Pls help me, I need you guys' help!
    Thank you.
    Regards
    Ala.

Erase free space simply writes zeros over the space occupied by deleted files to prevent data recovery. That's all it does. It does not give you extra disk space.
Your disk space goes up and down a bit because the system creates temporary files and logs which take up space, such as the Safari cache. You can clear these file using a utility like Onyx (which is free)

  • Disk Warrior and MacBook

I have spend the first day with my new MB, and so far so good - yes, a bit hot in the upper left corner of the keyboard while charging battery, but the temperatures are arround 58C for the CPUs and 34C for the SmartDisk (btw could someone explain to me what that exactely is?). Shouldn't there be another temperature sensor for the hard drive? And should I worry about temperatures at all, if the machine is working well and the heat is not really affecting my hands?
My other question is does Disk Warrior work on MB? I forgot how to boot from the external hard drive, could anyone remind me... which key?
Thanks again. Will have many more questions, but I better go one by one.
    Zo

Don't worry to much with the heat, if it is working just fine and not making your lap and hand uncomfortable.
Which disk warrior version do you have?
here the link to double check:
    http://www.alsoft.com/DiskWarrior/support.html#Tiger
To start up from external HD, go to system preference > start up disk > select the one you want to use for start up, or you can press option while restarting and it will display the option for you to boot from.
    Good Luck

  • External Hard drive "not readable", does not show up in Disk Warrior either. Help me, please!

I have a 500gb G Drive Slim that is almost brand new. I accidentally pulled the cord out when it was connected, and now when I try to open it, it says "not readable by this computer." This is what I see when I go into disc utility:
I called G Drive, and they told me to download Disk Warrior 4. I did, and this is what I see when I open it:
My hard drive doesn't show up...i'm not sure if i'm doing something wrong but I just paid $100 dollars for this and I'd really like some help. I read the manual and it wasn't helpful at all.
    Please help me!

Make sure it's format is Mac OS Extended (Journeled).
To check it's format, plug in the External HDD and search Disk Utility in the spotlight. Click the External HDD and go to the Partition tab. If it isn't Mac OS Extended change it and format it.
You shouldn't need any of these external applications to use it. I have one and use it like a flash drive.

  • What does 'Start up disk no more space' error message mean?

    I use a pre 2009 2 x 3 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon with 3 GB 667 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM
    Mac OS X.6.3
Error message pops up whenever I shut down as follows: "Start Up Disk has no more space available for application memory."
I have more than 265 GB on my startup disk. Currently I'm running FCP, Firefox, itunes. FCP is running a little slow lately and the system did a gray box crash once a few days ago while I was in FCP. Related?
I ran a disk repair permissions on the start up disk and even a verify/repair. Operation was successful.

3GB is very very minimal. Even more so when you factor in what you are running.
    And quad channel symmetrical memory = 4 x 1GB for starters, or 4 x 2GB.
So you have 256GB FREE on your startup boot drive?
Do you ever clone and erase/restore?
Have you upgraded the hard drive in the last year or two, something new would be faster mainly.
Run disk repair and maintenance from another drive, one that has same version OS X (10.6.3), and ideally with Disk Warrior 4.2 or TechTool Pro 5.
That "gray box" could mean you have directory problems, but that Apple verify/repair can't recognize (or fix).
More RAM, clone the system (SuperDuper, CCC 3.x), repair with Disk Warrior...

  • Disk Utility: What does "scan image for restore" do?

Before restoring a disk image, I know that I need to use Disk Utility's "Scan Image for Restore…" feature.
Exactly what does this feature do?

    I asked because I didn't know.
I was helping someone upgrade his PowerMac G5 from the original 80GB hard drive to a 1TB drive.
Since the G5 can accommodate two internal drives, I could have simply added the new drive and used Disk Utility's "restore" feature to migrate his data directly from the old drive to the new drive.
But it was more convenient for me to work at home so I removed the old drive, and brought it home along with the new drive.
I couldn't connect both drives to my MacBook Pro, since I only have one SATA drive dock. So I did it like this:
    1. Connected the old drive to my SATA dock.
    2. Create a disk image from his old drive, saving it to an external USB drive.
    3. Disconnected the old drive from the SATA dock and connected the new one.
    4. Restore the disk image to the new drive
Of course, when I tried step 4, I got an error message about needing to do a scan first. That's what led me to this question.
I have a follow-up question: When I created the image, I didn't bother changing the default image format, which is "compressed." If I had given the matter a little thought, I could have created a read-only image, since I would never need to change the image.
If I had used read-only, would Disk Utility have created the checksums on-the-fly when it created the disk image?

when i try to open itunes ,this written appears :"The iTunes Library file is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have write permission for this file. "What does it mean?

To solve this issue all I did was check to ensure that the file permissions were set as described by the earlier posts, followed by simply deleting the iTunes Library Genius.itdb file.  Once the file was deleted I was able to open iTunes without difficulty.  Note that I am running Windows 8.  Hope this helps!

You can't do a backup of icloud to an external drive.  In fact, does your post have anything to do with icloud (you're in the icloud forum)?
What kind of "system backup" are you doing?  Are you using Time Machine?

  • What does it mean by scratch disk full?

    Hi
can someone help me with my photoshop
every time i try to save something it tells me that my Scratch disk is full.
what does that mean and how to do solve it?

Use Photoshop menu Edit>Preferences>Performance add additional scratch space. Then stop and restart Photoshop.  It means the disk you have Photoshop scratch space on has filled up.  Photoshop can gobble lots of scratch disk when your using PS. When you close down the space will be returned to you system.
