What does Little Endian and Floating Point actually do?

Exporting audio to video using Linear PCM format brings along two mysterios options called "Little Endian" and "Floating Point". I did my research but all I could dig out was that the first one, Little Endian, has to do with addressing subcomponents of a file etc.
Does anyone know what these two actually mean in terms of exporting audio and why do I only see them in logic and not in Protools for example?
Thanks...

Big Endian is most significant byte (bit) first, Little Endian is most significant byte (bit) last. When we write down a number, we use big endian: one million threehundred and twentyfivethousand ninehundred and fiftyfour we'd write as 1 325 954. in little endian notation that would be 459 523 1.
I don't know why they show up when exporting audio to video, maybe it is to adaprt the audio to some other (older?) formats?

  • What does Time Machine and Time Capsule actually do with data?

Recently got a new iMac and Time Capsule. Working fine, AFAIK, but it's a bit disconcerting not being able to see real files on the TC.
All I've got on the TC is a big sparse disk file, which I assume is a compressed image of my HDD. Reading up on various backup programs, it seems that this is the way network backups tend to work - create an image file, and append any changes. Presumably it's done this way, rather than with real files, to keep network traffic to a minimum, at the expense of local CPU overhead.
    A couple of questions:
If I'm right that this sparse image contains all my data (and there aren't some hidden files somewhere), why doesn't the "modified" date change each time TM does a backup? It stays the same as the "created" date.
Can I do anything with this file, outside of TM, or is it best to leave it alone?

Yes, that is the way TM works for network backups. Data are stored in a sparse image file. The sparse image file's modification date would only change when the image file is expanded. Adding data into the image will not change the image's modification date (but the file's in the image file will be properly dated.)
Leave the file alone. There is nothing you can do with it that will be any good.

    Therefore black birds are crows.
The build I have is the released build of Mail. I reinstalled it as directed and it didn't help. That indicates that the problem is with my version of OS X.
The build you have is the released build of 10.8.5.  You reinstalled it as directed and it didn't help. That indicates it is a problem with your version of Mail.
The above are examples of flawed logic.
Seriously now. Since you obviously don't know what a Combo Update is, I will tell you. A Combo Update is short for a COMBINATION of Updates. That means that there is MORE THAN ONE update in a Combo Update. It is, therefore, quite proper to speak of "one of the Combo Updates". For people whose first language is not English and are not familiar with its subtle nuances, perhaps I should have said "One of the updates contained within the Combo Update was"
"There aren't "versions" of the combo update, unless Apple releases a revision"?
This is plain silly. It means "There aren't versions unless there are"
Also I didn't use the word "version". See above for the explanation of what I DID say.
Are you one of those TROLLS I keep hearing about?

Don't bother replying, I won't come back to this thread, so I wont see it. Of course you'll get another phoney Help point, so I suppose you will, but I'll never know. Doesn't that mess with your head?
    Bye Bye
    What an attitude you have.
Erase your drive and reinstall correctly, stop messing about with incremental patches. The routine you need is BERR (backup, erase, reinstall, restore) or just stay as yu are, it is entirely up to you.

The depth of your ignorance shows here, there are no phoney points, only ones awarded by posters who receive solutions, and only at the original posters choice.

  • Precision loss - conversions between exact values and floating point values

    Hi!
I read this in your SQL Reference manual, but I don't quite get it.
Conversions between exact numeric values (TT_TINYINT, TT_SMALLINT, TT_INTEGER, TT_BIGINT, NUMBER) and floating-point values (BINARY_FLOAT, BINARY_DOUBLE) can be inexact because the exact numeric values use decimal precision whereas the floating-point numbers use binary precision.
Could you please give two examples: one where a TT_TINYINT is converted to a BINARY_DOUBLE and one when a TT_BIGINT is converted into a DOUBLE, both cases give examples on lost precision? This would be very helpful.
    Thanks!

I need to upgrade my plugins for Creative Suite 6. What does this mean and how do I do it?

With the amount of information you've provided it's impossible to offer a solution.  We can't see your computer so we need to know the details of your problem and setup, i.e.:
what version of iPhoto are you using?
what system version are you running?
what are you seeing the exclamation point?  When you double click on a thumbnail?
    what fixes have you tried?
    where is your library located?
did you apply any updates or upgrades just prior to the problem occurring?
are you running a "managed" or "referenced" library?
    what type of Mac?
how much free space on your boot drive?

  • What does it mean (and how do I fix) my light is solid amber?

I plugged my Time Capsule in, but the light stays amber - what does this mean and how can I fix it?

Normally on start up, the Time Capsule should flash green for a second, then display solid amber for 15-20 seconds and then...if the settings are correct....the light will turn to green. If there is a problem at this point, the amber light will normally blink slowly.
If the light stays solid amber, this indicates that the Time Capsule has "locked up" and may have possibly experienced an internal component failure.
Power down the Time Capsule for at least 15 minutes
Hold in the reset button and keep holding the reset button in for another 10 seconds as you plug the power back in to the Time Capsule
Release the reset button and see if Time Capsule will go through the normal start up sequence
If you get a slow blinking amber light after approximately 30 seconds, you can now reconfigure the Time Capsule again using AirPort Utility
If you try the factory default reset sequence above a few times and the light remains constant amber, I'm afraid that you'll need to take the Time Capsule to an Apple store to let them have a look.

My projects icons turned to orange in Aperture?
Ana Candano, what is your Aperture version? Earlier Aperture versions - until Aperture 3.2.4 had colored icons, Aperture 3.3 and later are gray in gray. Do you have two versions of Aperture installed?
When you post back, list your version of MacOS X and the versions of any Aperture.app you can find with Spotlight on your Mac.
Frank, the thread you pointed to, was a different question, but probably is related. It would be good to know how it has been resolved.

  • I am getting a message that states "startup disk is almost full.  What does that mean and how do I fix it?

I am getting a message that states "startup disk is full".  What does this mean and how do I fix it?

For information about the Other category in the Storage display, see this support article. If the Storage display seems to be inaccurate, try rebuilding the Spotlight index.
Empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. If you use iPhoto, empty its internal Trash first:
              iPhoto ▹ Empty Trash
Do the same in other applications, such as Aperture, that have an internal Trash feature. Then restart the computer. That will temporarily free up some space.
According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation—not the mythical 10%, 15%, or any other percentage. You also need enough space left over to allow for growth of the data. There is little or no performance advantage to having more available space than the minimum Apple recommends. Available storage space that you'll never use is wasted space.
When Time Machine backs up a portable Mac, some of the free space will be used to make local snapshots, which are backup copies of recently deleted files. The space occupied by local snapshots is reported as available by the Finder, and should be considered as such. In the Storage display of System Information, local snapshots are shown as  Backups. The snapshots are automatically deleted when they expire or when free space falls below a certain level. You ordinarily don't need to, and should not, delete local snapshots yourself. If you followed bad advice to disable local snapshots by running a shell command, you may have ended up with a lot of data in the Other category. Ask for instructions in that case.
See this support article for some simple ways to free up storage space.
You can more effectively use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) or GrandPerspective (GP) to explore the volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can also delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one. Note that ODS only works with OS X 10.8 or later. If you're running an older OS version, use GP.
Deleting files inside an iPhoto or Aperture library will corrupt the library. Any changes to a photo library must be made from within the application that created it. The same goes for Mail files.
Proceed further only if the problem isn't solved by the above steps.
ODS or GP can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
    Back up all data now.
If you have more than one user account, make sure you're logged in as an administrator. The administrator account is the one that was created automatically when you first set up the computer.
Install the app you downloaded in the Applications folder as usual. Quit it if it's running.
Triple-click anywhere in the corresponding line of text below on this page to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
    sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
    sudo /Applications/GrandPerspective.app/Contents/MacOS/GrandPerspective
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V. You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator. Ignore any other messages that appear in the Terminal window.
The application window will open, eventually showing all files in all folders, sorted by size. It may take a few minutes for the app to finish scanning.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means. When in doubt, leave it alone or ask for guidance.
When you're done with the app, quit it and also quit Terminal.

  • What does call failed and call busy mean?

I call my bf on Skype every time I see him on there and it rings and eventually it says call failed and sometimes it will say call busy, what does call failed and call busy mean?

    WuTom wrote:
If a call is marked as "Call ended" does this guarantee the other person ended the call, or can it also mean the call disconnected or was dropped?
Was talking with someone and at one point the "Call ended - call dropped". Few other times it was just marked as "Call ended", they have bad internet. So is it possible the "Call ended" means the call was dropped due to internet or were they for definite hanging up?
    Thanks
    Hi WuTom,
From experience, it depends on the platform which you are using. In my case, my boyfriend is using Skype for iPhone and I am using Skype for Mac. Sometimes I find that the "Call ended - Call dropped" is the result of bad internet on my or his part. "Call Ended" on its own could mean one of two things, among others:
    1. A person accidentally touches the red end call button; or
    2. Skype crashes unexpectedly (either because of internet as you said or other issues such as flat battery)
This is just from my personal experience, but I do hope it clears some stuff up for you.
