HELP HELP!!!! DESPERATE! What does "Timeout, Timer Inactive" mean?

Please help. I am using a M-Audio Uno 1x1 MIDI Interface and it has worked great. Then, I turned on Logic yesterday and it at first spent a long time cheking for MIDI Drivers, unusual, and finally displayed the message "Timer Inactive- check to see if other applications are running Timer or MIDI". I obviously wasn't running any other applications. THEN, a message pops up and says:
"Instrument "M-Audio 1x1" sends to a MIDI port named "Port 1" of MIDI interface "USB MIDI 1x1" which no longers exists. Please check if all MIDI interfaces are connected and switched on; otherwise adjust the instrument's out port setting."
Well, I updated the drivers. That didn't work. I THEN went out and bought a NEW USB MIDI 1x1 Interface, exact same model. (Ironically the old one was NOT showing up on the USB port in the System Profiler when the problem started and the new one DOES now, so buying a new one helps I guess but doesn't solve the problem. Am I to assume these are somehow related?) The new one doesn't fix the problem. When I go into "Audio MIDI Setup", sometimes the Setup application crashes when I choose "MIDI Setup" and other times, when MIDI Setup comes up, it will not led me add a new device and simply does not see the MIDI Interface even though the System Profiler does.
WHAT IS GOING ON?!?!?! I am in desperate need of help- PLEASE!!!!!

OK, first of all, all is not lost!
The "Timer Inactive" message means that Logic couldn't communicate with your MIDI interface. (I guess you kinda figured this one out the hard way...)
The "Instrument... no longer exists" is another symptom of the exact same thing. This error won't show up unless:
a) your interface is switched off (or disconnected)
=OR=
b) Logic (and/or AudioMIDI Setup) can't detect your interface
OK, here's what you do...
This is Part #1
1) Uninstall the MIDI drivers
2) Disconnect the MIDI interface from your computer and re-boot
3) Open AMS (AudioMIDI Setup) and go to the MIDI page. If you see an interface icon, it should be grayed out. There's also a chance you will so no icon for an interface.
4) If your interface has a power switch, turn it off.
5) Plug your interface directly into one of your computer's USB ports. Do not use a hub.
(If it has a power switch, turn it on now)
6) Does the interface show up now?
Post with your results and then I'll take you to part #2.

What does "Countdown" timer logo mean when shown against a mailbox?

In Mail, I see a "Countdown" timer logo showing faintly against mailboxes in the "On my Mac" partition and when it does, I cannot move mail messages from my inbox to the folder that has that logo. I can't see any description of this - is it a background task that is being done on my mailbox?

Do you retain very large numbers of messages in a single Mailbox? What percentage of free disk space do you have on your Mac?

Purchased an album from iTunes store and can see it has been downloaded but is 'greyed out', and will not play or sync with iPod. When looking further I see the majority oif the album's songs have an error message 8003 alongside them. Any clues as to the problem and a solution would be appreciated

In this context, the 8003 suggests the files are damaged.
If your country's iTunes Store allows you to redownload purchased tracks, I'd delete your current copies of the tracks and try redownloading fresh copies.
Otherwise, I'd report the problem to the iTunes Store.
Log in to the Store. Click on "Account" in your Quick Links. When you're in your Account information screen, go down to Purchase History and click "See all".
Find the items that are not playing properly. If you can't see "Report a Problem" next to the items, click the "Report a problem" button. Now click the "Report a Problem" links next to the items.
(Not entirely sure what happens after you click that link, but fingers crossed it should be relatively straightforward.)

I was playing with my ipad settings (it's an older model) and noted in the advanced settings of Safari there was a place to view website databases. When I clicked on this I saw websites. How do these get there and what does the space amount mean?

Can anyone tell me how these get there? Can a website be posted even if it was never went to? What does the space amount mean? For example, 1.5 kb...is this quite a bit? Would it indicate someone has gone to a site multiple times?
I share my ipad with my teenage daughter and I'm trying to find out if she's lying to me. Obviously she's swearing that she has "no idea" how these got there and I'm trying to keep her safe (she's only 14).

Think of your PC and the 'temporary internet folder' where it keeps cached copies of web pages or elements off a web page for 'quicker display the next time you visit'. That's pretty much what that folder is. 1.5K is tiny. Probably just a basic page with some text on it. (you might be confusing 1.5K with 1.5 megabyte....megabyte is large...it's roughly 1000 kilobytes, so the 1.5K is a tiny file)
As far as I know, the only way info gets into that folder is if the browser has been to that site.
if you have a concern there are browsers out there, McGruff is one i've seen recommended, that allow some degree of parental control and supervision. That or you could passcode lock the iPad or enable the restrictions to turn off some parts of the device to have some control.

I have many photos that are visible as thumbnails in the Pictures Library, however when I try to open them in a big screen they show a back screen with an exclamation mark in a triangle. What does this exclamation mark mean ?

The exclamation make is an indication that iPhoto has broken the file path to the original photo.
Make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.

Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

Could be many things, we should start with this...

Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.

I understand that when using Numbers/Pages - an up-arrow on a document means that the file is still to be uploaded to the cloud, what does a down arrow mean? It seems the document can't be accessed until the arrow clears.

I believe what it's supposed to mean is that some changes were made to the document on another device, and those changes were saved back to the cloud. Now you've opened iWork on a different device to access that document - it compares the document you've got locally with the one in the could, sees some recent changes and downloads them.
What gets me is why this sometimes happens even when I've not made any changes to a document from another device.

The Apple logo appearing on your iPod nano is your nano's start-up icon. Normally, when you turn off your iPod nano, you are really putting it into a deep or semi-deep sleep, where it is ready to turn on at the push of a button and resume where you left off in your Now Playing list.
If, however, you leave your iPod in a sleep mode for some time , it will shut down. To turn it on again, you'll need to hit the center button (deep and semi-deep will wake up with any button press). When turning the iPod on from a shut down state, it will display the Apple logo while loading your music iPod software.

It sounds like some of the Unix Executable commands were removed (or the permissions to those were modified) out of the /usr/bin/ folder. You can try opening disk utility and repairing permissions on Macintosh HD or you can reboot your computer and holding down option-r when it comes back up to reinstall Lion again. This will not delete your personal information or applications you have installed but it would be best to back it up to Time Machine before you do. The article on how to do this is here. (http://www.apple.com/macosx/recovery/) I have had to do this before and it works like a charm. It should fix your issue but grab a cup of coffee because its going to take about 35 - 40 minutes depending on how fast your computer is.

What does "RTR FOR ALP" mean?

I just finished switching my 1400 minute family plan over to the 1GB Share Everything Plan and I noticed that for all four of the phones on the plan (three smart phones and one basic phone), there is an added feature called RTR FOR ALP on all four lines.
I was shown that FRIENDS & FAMILY ALP - 10 would be removed from all lines and that RTR FOR CAPPED PLANS $0 would be removed from the 4G phone's line and RTR FOR CAPPED MBBC $0 would be removed from the basic phone's line. If I had enough examples of RTR and ALP in use I might be able to figure it out, but with only my own plan to look at, I'm stumped.
So what does RTR FOR ALP mean and what does the feature allow me to do that I couldn't do before?

I don't know what the letters stand for, exactly, but what's happening is the 10 Friends for all lines is being removed, since you know have unlimited calling and there is no need for F&F numbers. The 4G phone and the Basic phone's individual data caps have been removed, and the shared data cap has been applied to those lines.
Maybe with another cup of coffee I can come up with what the acronyms mean....
