What does problems were found with the partition map mean

Why is there a problem when I run my disk utility that says "problems were found with the partition map that which might prevent booting"?  Why is there a problem????????

You have to repair your partition map. It's the most important part of the hard drive related to software, because if the partition map doesn't work, the whole hard drive is useless.
As you have OS X Lion, you should be able to repair it while OS X is started. Open Disk Utility (in /Applications/Utilities), choose your hard drive at the top of the sidebar, and press the button to repair the disk. What do you see in the blank box?
Also, after choosing the hard drive in Disk Utility, tell me the SMART status, at the bottom of the window. You may also want to check the Macintosh HD status

  • Problems Were Found With The Partition Map

I keep getting that error when I verify my disk after I boot up Lion and verify the 320.07 GB Hitachi Option. When I follow the instructions to repair the disk the problem doesn't seem to pop up but when I double chek it's still there. When I hit the Mac HD option it says the Macintosh HD option was found corrupt and needs to be repaired. I follow those same steps they give me but nothing bad pops up when I hit the repair disk option. I don't know how this is possible or what to do help please!!! I am running Mac OS X 10.7.5 Lion on a 2011 Macbook Pro 320gb 2.3Ghz i5 processor if that helps.

Do as instructed - you really just need to verify and repair the "Macintosh HD" partition.
Boot to your Recovery partition by starting up whilst holding down the Command and R keys. When the Recovery screen comes up, use Disk Utility to try and verify and repair the Macintosh HD partition. DU may be able to repair it, maybe not - it could be a sign that your disk is failing.
If you can boot to Macintosh HD, I would immediately backup all data before attempting a repair. Your drive may be unsalvageable at this point and you need - now - to try some backup scheme before the disk fails entirely.
    Good luck - call back...

  • I have an alert message in disc utility. Error: storage system verify or repair failed. Problems were found with the partitian map which might prevent booting.

While running verify disc in disc utility on 251 GB SSD SM256c Media I came up with this message: Alert system verify or repair failed. In the descriptions box of history it said, problems were found with the partitions map which might prevent booting. This is followed by a message in red reading, Error: Storage system verify or repair failed. At the time I was down loading raw pictures off my camera through a card reader across my computer to a relatively new 2TB Western Digital portable hard drive. after about 13 to 15 pictures downloaded that drive faileded. My Mac Book Air works fine, but i get this message now everytime I run disc verify on this disc. The Macintosh HD checks out fine.

  • What does "Problems were found validating your project" indicate?

I successfully burned (using iDVD3) a 22 minute sequence exported from Final Cut Express 2 as a Quick Time Movie a week ago. Today I exported another sequence, 59 minutes in length, from FCE2 as a Quick Time Movie and when I dragged and dropped it into iDVD3 everything appeared to be fine until I attempted to burn the disc. The following message appeared: "Problems were found validating your project. A DVD must have at least one video track or one slideshow." The movie does "Preview" in iDVD and I can also successfully play it in QuickTime. Any ideas on what is going on??? By the way, I can't even successfully burn the 22 minute sequence I was able to burn a week ago.... I get the same message. Any ideas greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your reply. I don't know what you mean by "background movie." Also, "placeholder" slideshow is unclear. In any case, I have had success since my post in burning a DVD of one of my Quick Time movie exports from Final Cut Express. I saved the movie file to an external drive and used my laptop that has iDVD6. I did get a similar validation error message but was able to work around it by going to some "map" thingy and dragging and dropping the file into a box that seemed to be prompting me to do exactly that! I have two more movie files to burn, so, perhaps by the time I finish those, the mystery will be demystified...... maybe.
I'd appreciate any clarification you could give on the "background" movie and the "placeholder" concept. Thanks again!

  • What does that superposed arrow on the airport icon mean?

On one computer I cannot connect to the airport base station as I can with all other Mac's using the same procedure on the same base station network. On the Mac I cannot connect from, a G5 is using OS 10.4.10, the airport strength symbol is not highlighted and there is a vertical highlighted arrow superposed on the airport symbol. What does that superposed arrow on the airport icon mean?

SteveCC, Welcome to the discussion area!
I believe that you are seeing the icon indicating you G5 is acting as a base station. On that G5 open System Preferences->Sharing->Internet and stop Internet sharing.

  • What does a blinking file with a question mark mean?

Hey guys! i have a mid 2008 macbook pro and it recently turned off and whenever i try to turn it back on, a blinking file with a question mark pops up? any thoughts or ideas? Maybe the hardrive is broken or something?

  • What does this mean and how do I fix it: "The following warnings and errors were found during the validation of the current project:  - There appears to be a broken asset in your project. Correct this problem before burning this project."

What does this mean and how do I fix it: "The following warnings and errors were found during the validation of the current project:  - There appears to be a broken asset in your project. Correct this problem before burning this project."

It means that iDVD has found a problem with one of the movies added to the project.  Did you edit the movie after it had been added to the project.
Create a new project and add your assets, movies, slides, etc. again and follow this workflow to help ensure the best quality video DVD:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the  File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option.  This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image and launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding was good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

  • I can import some songs from another computer but not others.  All the songs were purchased with the same apple id. Message says "...check connection to network..." Any ideas as to what could be causing this problem?

Using home share, I can import some songs from my son's  computer but not others.  All the songs were purchased with the same apple id.  Err msg:"There was a problem downloading ... You do not have enouggh access privileges for this operation. Please check that the connection to the network is active and try again."  The network appears to be fine .  I can import other songs from his library.  The same songs cause me a problem each time I try.  My husband had no trouble importing the same songs I have trouble with. I get the same error message if I try to import the same songs from my husbands computer as well.  "Command I" appears to show the same protections on both the songs I can import & the ones I cannot.  My husband and son are both running OS 10.6, while I am running 10.7.  I think I had this problem even before I upgraded, but I am not certain.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions..
My first suggestion is to Repair Disk. Here's how:
Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key.
Go to Installer menu (Panther and earlier) or Utilities menu (Tiger) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel, and report)
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
If DU reports errors it cannot repair you will need to use a utility like Tech Tool Pro or Disk Warrior
Please post back and let me know how that goes.

  • Problems were encountered during repair of the partition map.

I had too much time on my hands yesterday and I decided to try to remove an unused kernel extension that I saw in my EtreCheck report. The kext was for the PACE iLok, for Pro Tools, which I no longer use. I found the item that was installing the kext and removed it, and EtreCheck reported that the kext was gone.
Some time after that I was troubleshooting another issue I have with Mavericks (shutdown time: my shutdown time with ML was almost instantaneous; with Mavericks, it takes about 12 seconds.), and I used the recovery partition and Disk Utility to repair my HD and permissions.
DU reported that my usual boot volume was OK, and permissions repaired on it without problems.
When I have DU look at the drive itself, it reported: Problems were encountered during repair of the partition map.
And then, in ominous red text: error: live file system repair is not supported.
I tried repairing again, and also got this message: The partition map needs to be repaired because there's a problem with the EFI system partition 's file system.
I tried a few things to get these error messages to go away. I booted with a DiskWarrior disk and it was unable to do the repair.
I did a little reading about the EFI partition, and in Macs it appears to be a partition related to firmware updates.
My mac has not had any symptoms at all during this, aside from the slower shutdown.
Even so, I did not like the idea of a partition that could not be repaired on my HD, so I did a clean install. Seemed to work, DU reported a healthy drive and volume.
This morning, as I was preparing for a TM backup, I ran DU again, and the error messages were back. Not good.
This time I tried TechTool, and it was able to repair the HD from the TechTool eDrive (TechTool's version of the recovery partition).
I've looked in these discussions and there are some mentions of these error messages, but usually in the context of failing hard drives or drives that must be erased and the OS reinstalled.
I'm wondering if anyone can shed some light on this for me, what these error messages mean, why they are occurring, and if I can just ignore them. My internal HD is not a stock Apple drive, but a Samsung SSD that I installed some time ago, and which otherwise works fine. My current suspicions are that either:
there is something inherent in Mavericks that creates some problem with the EFI partition map over time, which then shows up in the error messages in DU
or there is some incompatibility with this SSD and Mavericks that creates the same error messages.

My daughter has had her Razr for about 9 months now.  About two weeks ago she picked up her phone in the morning on her way to school when she noticed two cracks, both starting at the camera lens. One goes completely to the bottom and the other goes sharply to the side. She has never dropped it and me and my husband went over it with a fine tooth comb. We looked under a magnifying glass and could no find any reason for the glass to crack. Not one ding, scratch or bang. Our daughter really takes good care of her stuff, but we still wanted to make sure before we sent it in for repairs. Well we did and we got a reply from Motorola with a picture of the cracks saying this was customer abuse and that it is not covered under warranty. Even though they did not find any physical damage to back it up. Well I e-mailed them back and told them I did a little research and found pages of people having the same problems. Well I did not hear from them until I received a notice from Fed Ex that they were sending the phone back. NOT FIXED!!! I went to look up why and guess what there is no case open any more for the phone. It has been wiped clean. I put in the RMA # it comes back not found, I put in the ID #, the SN# and all comes back not found. Yet a day earlier all the info was there. I know there is a lot more people like me and all of you, but they just don't want to be bothered so they pay to have it fix, just to have it do it again. Unless they have found the problem and only fixing it on a customer pay only set up. I am furious and will not be recommending this phone to anyone. And to think I was considering this phone for my next up grade! NOT!!!!

    Hi Paul,
...on my desktop power Mac (mid 2007)
Are you sure you don't have a Mac Pro? The last of the PowerMac desktops were discontinued in August 2006.
What does "About this Mac" (in the Apple menu) say about the processor type?

Perhaps let's first try updating your Apple Software Update.
Launch Apple Software Update ("Start > All Programs > Apple Software Update"). Does it launch and offer you a newer version of Apple Software Update? If so, choose to install just that update to Apple Software Update. (Deselect any other software offered at the same time.)
If the ASU update goes through okay, try another iTunes install. Does it go through without the errors this time?

Have you tried to run the verify/repair permissions and verify/repair disk through the recovery disk? If that didn't work then I would reinstall the OS after backing up. If that still doesn't work I would take it in.

  • What does a file folder with a question mark in it mean when the computer won't start?

What does a file folder with a question mark in it mean when the computer won't start?

There are four general causes of this issue:
    1. The computer's PRAM no longer contains a valid startup disk setting when there aren't any problems with the disk itself. This can be checked for by pressing the Option key and seeing if the drive appears.
    2. The internal drive's directory structure has become damaged. This requires usage of an alternate bootable system to perform the repair.
    3. Critical system files have been deleted. This requires usage of an alternate bootable system to reinstall them.
    4. The internal drive has died or become unplugged. This is the most likely case if the computer took a sharp impact or there are unusual sounds coming from the hard drive's location.
