What does restoring my iPhone do?

I just got my mom's old iPhone December 9th. So i added all my contacts into the phone. I have saved all the pictures i have taken in the main camera roll. So I hooked up my iPhone 4 to the computer, and daved all of the "Camera Roll" pictures. I wanted to get rid of the other folders my mom has but save them onto my computer. Whem iTunes opened up after i saved my photos from "Camera Roll", it said something about iTunes not being able to read my iPhone and that i needed to restore it. It shows the "iPhone Recovery Mode". Will restoring my phone from iTunes (when itunes told me to, not my iPhone) delete everything off of my phone from contacts to pictures?

If it says: "iPhone Recovery Mode". then everything is already gone from the iphone.
You need to restore it.
You will lose anything that you have failed to import/transfer/save to your computer.

  • What does "restore your iphone" mean?

so my iphone 5c was really messed up so i went to the apple store and they just game me a new phone. all was fine, until i got home and decided to stop using my iphod and just sync all my music onto my phone. when i went to do this, everything from the last few months was deleted. photos, messages, apps. how do i get this all back? i had a few very important messages that i need back!! i hit "restore my iphone" after i reslised that this had hapened. please i need help!

That means you have restored it to factory settings, wiping out everything that was on it. If you have a backup of the stuff that was lost, you can restore from that backup.

  • I am a forensic examiner with an iPod 5G in Recovery Mode. As a 'non Apple' person, what does 'restore' imply with reference to the 5G? Does it affect any data on teh iPod, like pics, and videos?

As stated in the title, I am a forensic examiner, although most of my work is on Windows devices. My problem is an iPod 5G with Touch Wheel that I received to exam, and I have not been able to get anything from conventional methods. But not really understanding enough about the Apple architecture and iPods, when I plug it into a computer, it appears to be in Recovery Mode, and calls for a Restore. The questions I have are:
    1) How does the iPod get into Recovery mode
    2) How to get it out of Recovery mode
    3) But more importantly, what does Restore do to the device? If there happen to be items of interest (pics, videos, etc), does the restore affect them?

    - You can place the iPod in recovery mode by:
    Recovery mode
or by using this program (there are others too)
RecBoot: Easy Way to Put iPhone into Recovery Mode
    - Many internal errors in the iPod resul in the iPod going automaticlly (default) into recovery mode.
    - Usual method is to restore the iPod via iTunes to get the iPod our of recovery mode.
iTunes: Backing up, updating, and restoring iOS software
Sometime RecBoot will do it if the iPod was intentionally placed in recovery mode
    - Unless RecBoot or similar will get the iPod put of recovery mode the iPod will be erased. Restoring the iPod erases the iPod.

  • HT1766 what does restor back up means/what does it do

what does restor back up mean?/what does it do

it stores all the data on your device in another place so that you can restore from it if a problem happens (say your device crashes or gets erased). then all your data is restored to your iPhone/iPod/iPad/Mac.

  • I got an iphone from Hong Kong which is locked one. Can anyone explain me what does a locked iphone means. How do I use it in India now, with my own sim card. How do I unlock it???

I got an iphone from Hong Kong which is locked one. Can anyone explain me what does a locked iphone means. How do I use it in India now, with my own sim card. How do I unlock it???

If your iPhone is locked to a wireless provider, only that wireless provider
can unlock it. Contact the wireless provider in Hong Kong to see if they
offer unlocking and if you qualify.
If your iPhone is locked to an AppleID that you do not know, return it for
a refund as it is useless. Only the person whose AppleID was used for
activation can remove the lock. There is no workaround for Activation Lock.
If neither of the above is what you are facing, provide more detail so someone
    may offer a solution.

  • ITunes.  After installing new software, what does "restore iPod" mean?  Does it mean to restore all games and data to the new software or does it mean to "undo" the software update?

iTunes.  After backing iPod to computer and installing new software, what does "restore iPod" mean?  Does it mean to restore all games and data to the new software or does it mean to "undo" the software update?

You can restore your iPod to "New" which will erase every thing and install fresh iOS software or you can restore to a particular backup that you have previously created. In this case, your iPod Apps & data will appear as per the backup. Note that some content is not in a backup and will need to be synced back to the iPad from the iTunes music library or from, for example, the iPhoto photo library.

  • Why does restoring my iPhone not resolve my 'other' category issue?! HELP PLEASE

I DON'T UNDERSTAND AND AM GETTING INCREDIBLY FRUSTRATED.
My 'other' category for my iphone is 8.7GB!!!! WHY?! WHAT DOES IT CONSIST OF?!
i restored my phone twice and absolutely nothing happened.
    HELP PLEASE!!!!!! :'(

If it's backed up, it won't be gone.
Be sure you've transferred all iTunes media purchased on your phone into your computer's iTunes library.
Make sure you're synching your contacts with a cloud service or your computer's contact manager app.
Make sure you've imported all pictures taken by the iPhone into your computer.
You should be good to go.

  • Does restoring the iPhone Update your Baseband?

As the simple question suggest, im wondering if "Restoring the iPhone 4 will update the Baseband?"
I am running on a Factory Unlocked iPhone 4, running 02.10.04 Baseband, and I am wondering if restoring it will update the baseband or just the 4.1 Firmware? Asking because I heard some Factory Unlocked iPhones Lock back up after update or restore by error, so I would appreciate it. Thanks

A true factory unlocked phone will not lock up after an update. A phone that has been hacked to be unlocked with lock back after a firmware update. As far as the baseband changes, that would be dependent on what is in the firmware update. If the firmware has a new baseband, then yes it would update the baseband.

  • What does "Restore" setting for Pages on iPad 2 do?

On iPad 2 the Settings app has a submenu for Pages. In it is an ON/OFF setting labelled "Restore".  I hoped it would reset the Getting Started document back to its original state after using it for experimentation, but it doesn't seem to! What does it do?

I also have the same question as it relates to the iPod and Numbers and Pages.

  • What does restoring mean?

If you haven't backed up your information on iCloud or anywhere for that matter, does "restoring your phone" basically mean you will never see your pictures, contacts, calendars, and texts again?
(Additional info- I can't back up my phone now. It's too late. I did a software update and it went wrong--have to plug my phone into iTunes because it won't work and the thing that shows it needs to be connected is displayed. The only option is to restore my phone...am I screwed?

  • What does restore back-up from an iPhone really mean

    Hi everyone
I haven't connected my iPhone to my computer/iTunes in over a year because I had computer issues that I just recently was able to fix. However, in the meantime I have purchased well over a hundred songs and over 50 apps. When I plugged my phone it, it gave me the following message:
"This computer has previously been synced with an iPhone or another IOS device"
and then it gave me two options:
    1. Set up a new iphone
2.restore from back up of my Iphone (but the last back up was from May 2011)
I'm not too sure how to proceed and am afraid that if I restore from back-up, I'll lose everything that I've purchased from May 2011 to present.
This may seem like a really simple question but I must honestly say that I am stumped...
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thank you in advance.

    Hi Bhazel,
Thank you for taking the time to help but I was wondering when i 'restore from back-up' what happens to the new apps? And will it delete the info contained within the actual app itself?

  • What does restore do?

I haven't backed up my iPad, but it's forcing me to update to iOS 6. All it shows is the connect to iTunes picture when I try to do something with it. When I plug it into iTunes, it says I have to restore, but as i said, I haven't backed up my iPad at all. I'm worried what will happen if I restore it if I haven't backed it up and have purchases many songs, etc.

...as far as I understand, restore will get your phone back to 'factory settings', but only restore it with the latest version for the iPhone ie. doing it through iTunes they will only give you their latest version as far as I am aware. They dont allow you to choose which version software you want.
You would then have to use the last back up of your phone on iTunes to add your content (aps, etc) back to your phone.
