Does spin dump knock down the Memory used when you view Activity Monitor? Can someone tell me how it actually works?

i have iMac desktop and i am having a problem with running yahoo. other web sights seem to be ok just loading slow or not the whole thing. I go under activity monitor-Network and it says com.apple.geod not responsive. com.apple.geod and Flash Player (safari internet plug-in 3069) are in red highlight. is spin dump the same as cleaning up your hard drive for windows. I do not have Airport anymore and want to delete it from my comp. how can i do this.

I am not able to find any doc on this vm option. We are having a issue with this VM ( without the disablefatspin option set ) running weblogic, where after a few hundred requests ( on a SMP machine ), the VM does not respond. We are forced to restart. Thread dumps show a "lock chain" although no deadlocks.
Somebody in this newsgroup ( archive ) had suggested setting the "-XXdisablefatspin option. What does this option do ? Any docs related to this for 1.4.2_04 VM ?

Padlock Symbol at Lower Left of USB hard drive Icon - What does it mean ?

Presumably the small locked padlock that appears at the lower left corner of my USB external hard drive's mounted icon when I boot into Leopard means the volume is locked in some way ????
This volume is NOT my designated Time Machine volume.
I seem to be able, as my computer's administrator, to still write to and read from this drive and the permissions look OK for it so what does this newly appearing lock icon mean and how do I get rid of it ?
Also: on the Mac's internal drive this time, Why is the finder asking for my password very time I try to move or delete files and folders from my own home documents folder when logged in normally as myself ? Don't I "own" my own home folder ?????

I too want to join in on this Band Wagon! I did nothing new to my Mac Pro running Leo 10.5.2 and all current updates applied. First thing I noticed was copying files from an external usb drive. The file would get to almost finished and have maybe a couple of bits left. Then a notice would appear saying the files were corrupted. (NOT) I had to Force Quit the Finder and Relaunch it in order to remove the warning notice off of the desktop. Then I noticed 1 of my 4 internal drives with the padlock on the lower left hand side. As I was investigating that drive another drive blinked and then it too had the padlock! Now the external usb drive also has a padlock. I looked at permissions with (Command I) and found that my permissions had been changed to "Custom" which could not be changed back to read & write. In fact all of the affected drives now have the same issue. So to try to fix them I added myself to the users side of the permissions box and gave myself read and write permissions in the hope I could delete the custom permissions account. No Luck! But I was able to delete the new read write account? Ran Disk utility from the DVD an the drives still show up as being locked. Anyway when I removed the DVD I let the machine reboot. Now for the fun! It gets up to the grey background & spinning gears, goes to black and restarts. It stays caught caught in this loop until I kill the power. Call Apple support & they told me what I already knew. Reformat & start over. I do not find that to be an answer I want to know what caused it & how to fix it! Since my company just invested in 50 of these units and I am the only technician for over 200 users.

Pl see if MOS Doc 1073171.1 (ORA-7445 [kdkbin()+223] on Linux x86-64 platforms on 9i release) is relevant in your case.--- I've been apply the patch, but no help.

In the About Firefox Help window what does, "You are currently on the default update channel" mean?

Firefox cannot perform an automatic update when running as a normal user on my system (it just spins when connecting to the update server) so normally when it notifies me of an update I run the application as root, open the About Firefox dialog and select update Firefox. 
I was recently notified of an update to Firefox 7.0.1 (or 7.1 not positive) so I ran Firefox as root and opened the About Firefox box. 
This time instead of showing me "An update is available. Click here to update." it displayed "You are currently on the '''default''' update channel". 
What does this mean?

Mine says "the '''release''' update channel" on Windows. I believe this helps you know whether Firefox is checking for new official releases or new beta test releases. I don't know what '''default''' update channel indicates.
A web search indicates that '''default''' means no updates. To change your update channel, check out this article:

What does error -4 mean when syncing between the iPad in iTunes on a MacBook Pro?

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select

What does an orange triangle on the file

I am using InDesign CC-2014 on Mac
I have copied a full project to the CC Desktop folders. It includes a variety of files, including an InDD book with 14 documents.
The InDesign files (.indd) themselves have all been marked with green ticks.
The folder with assets has a mix of .psd and .tif files—about 300 images in total.
Some of these (both file types) have orange triangles on the file icon.
And, the synch has now been running for about 5 days and does not appear to be moving past this point—just stalled and little wheel in the CC Synch panel is spinning--spinning
What does the orange icon mean?
Where Can I get further information for troubleshooting?
Any suggestions for how to fix this?

@Spartan707 - Please use the Log Collector tool from here Log Collector Tool to get the Core Sync logs. Email them to me at [email protected] and I will make sure the Core Sync team gets the files to investigate further. From the screen shot I do not see any obvious reason for the files failing to sync. There is this help article on why files may not sync Error: "Unable to sync files".

I think I need more investigation about this. I found two papers last night:

with a previous online paper mentioning to alter the maxservers of aio0. Although this is an alternative, I tried to increase the value to 300 (500 at this moment) and it does not seem to work. On other hand, with change of the disk_asynch_io, it will hinder the exp/imp pump. So I really don´t know what to say.
Apparently the disk_asynch_io needs to be FALSE in order to speed up the backup. just verified again, even with my maxserver=500 did not help.

What does this log mean? Fresh os install still can only safe boot

*My head is about to explode.*
*Last night, I pulled my old hard drive. put in new one and did fresh install.*
*Ever confident that this would magically fix my computer.*
*I can still only boot in safe mode.*
*I ran AHT. everything passed. I have reseted every thing and reset logic board. yes only one push of the magic button*

thank you thank you for taking an interest. this is so frustrating.
i only have apple keyboard, mighty mouse, and 20 inch cinema display connected. this morning took out memory and tried to boot up with individual pairs in the first bank. first the (2)256, the (2) 1g, and then the other (2) 1g modules. everytime I get the weird fuzzy wheel under the logo after a while, black screen flashes, then grey apple logo fuzzy screen then black forever.
I ran tiger updates this morn. still will only boot to safe mode. then tried to run leopard disk to install it
will not boot from leopard disk.
tried safe boot, then doulble click install leopard, restart, then the saga repeats with the pixely red square around the wheel.
these are fresh drives with only what came on instll disk loaded.

i love this system(well at least i did). I want to install leopard on my powerbook too but am terrified to do so right now since it is working and I have work to do. Can't afford to have no computer to do my work on...self employment is great?!

I was able to get into the system utilities and run a verify and repair that says it fixed the errors but still no further!!? Just did the hardware test through the utility disk boot up and got the above error message... What does this mean? Any info would be appreciated!!

Mende1's reply way well be right but it's always good practice to Google an error code (Mac error xxxxx) as now that the 'More like this' section appears to be lost, the number of different replies (mainly taken from old Apple Support columns) will increase your options. The 'Related articles' section, where there are some, should not be overlooked either.

What does ""VM Thread" prio=5 tid=0x17b178 nid=0x2 runnable" do ?

When I take the thread dump of a java process, I am getting the
"VM Thread" prio=5 tid=0x17b178 nid=0x2 runnable
in the thread dump. But no stack for this thread.
Does anyone knows what does this "VM Thread" do ?
I have a situation where the java process is taking 50% of the CPU power and when I use prstat -L to get the thread wise CPU usahe the "VM Thread" is taking 25% CPU. Anyone knows what could be the reason for this "VM Thread" to take 25% of CPU power ?
If anyone knows what task the "VM Thread" does, please share it.

There are no thread dump for native VM threads. Which jvm are u using?
You must be using a 4 -CPU Solaris sparc box? When u encounter the high CPU, can u do a pstack 3 times 5 seconds apart? Note if thread# 2 changes.
I cant recall off hand what to look out for but u shld see if there is GC happening there. unfortunately, pstack give mangled trace, so there is no easy way to tell. I have to go back office n check it tomorrow. then again, no promise cos i seldom login :p
My guess is that ur GC is running when high CPU is encountered. If u r running 1.4.2_x, add -XX:+PrintGC -XX:+PrintHeapAtGC -XX:+PrintGCDetails. You may also consider -XX:+UseConcMarkSweepGC -XX:+UseParNewGC or
-XX:+UseParallelGC
But, they may result in higher CPU cos they have more threads doing collection.

What does Enterprise 2.0 mean to you?

When Web 2.0 meets the enterprise, is it a convergence? A confluence? A collision? A leap forward in collaboration or an invitation to chaos? I have yet to talk to anyone in IT who doesn't have an opinion on this issue. Here's the soapbox. Step right up.

I want to be contentious here, so I won't hold back, don't mean to offend, so apologise if offense is taken, but this is an important question to me, which I'm very passionate about.
First, although the question is okay, it shouldn't be: what does E2.0 mean to you? It should simply be what does E2.0 mean? It's our job to get this right, and I'm not going to have my personal E2.0 world, we (Oracle) is going to create an E2.0 product, WebCenter that is going to try to hit the nail on the head. The question is what should this look like exactly for the next while...
E2.0 should be about...
Removal of personal hard drives...in E2.0 no one should have any data stored on their laptop for personal use only. All intelligence/data/information should be organized in the corporate portal. This will help with employee turn over, bringing people up to speed quickly, etc... Based on their 'role' in the organization, they would have a predefined portal experience that is the same as other people in their role. That portal should be created by the people in that role to have the short cuts, groups, etc, that are relevant to that role. Not relevant to that person...this is crucial. Individuals don't matter anymore in the sense that they have info that others don't. All of their info should be dumped into the company portal.
People should be ranked by what they do. (this is the BEA Pathways product). When you write a white paper that others find useful, your rank should go up. Your annual appraisal will be based solely on your portal ranking.
All communication will be tracked and stored so it can be reused. When you talk on your IP phone the conversation will be recorded, automatically converted to searchable text with voice recognition and stored for full text searching, same with IM chats, email, etc... We need to surface all the information that happens in an organization, period, no more hiding of information.
Sensitive information will be encrypted, but by being encrypted we'll feel more comfortable with sharing it, because we'll use the IRM tool from Stellent, so we can revoke privileges from off-boarded employees.
The corporate firewall will come down to the degree that we need to have better communication with our customers, partners, etc... They will be happy when they can find us, instead of us hiding...isn't it annoying when a customer rep won't email you because of fear of legal discovery, because they are too afraid of being sued! People need to be held accountable and empowered to share information...the customers will love it and be loyal, otherwise they'll find a company that can do that. Plus the info you provide to the customer will all be stored inside the corporate repository anyway and be signed off for approval.
We will be able to contact anyone, anytime they are available. Click to call, that is when we see someone is online, all we have to do is click their name and we are talking/video chating with them instantly. We'll know when people are available with presence. That is like in instant messaging when you say you are available, busy, away etc...
These things are straightforward concept and available today. We don't need crazy visualization techniques like second life etc...that is video game crap. We don't need avatars...we need to be able to access information, period, that is it, that is all that is important, and we need to capture it for reuse...so when I tell you the answer on the phone, that question is answered for all time for everyone...it's just that simple.
All the appropriate technolgies deal with these two factors. Save the info, and give the creator of the info credit for it. Wiki's, blogs, im, are all aspects of this same thing. Simple search results are adequate for finding these items. Present them in a simple way. We just need to read some text to get the info. People tag good text, whoever wrote that good text gets elevated in his/her rankings, in the future stuff written by that person automatically is easier to find because they are a conscientious contributor.
This is massive...the technology is simple, but this means that individual smart people will get incented and everyone will benefit.
It really isn't that complicated, but the ramifications are completely profound. Don't wander off and imagine crazy visualization techniques...it's not that. Look at Google, it's the least gussied up search results engine out there...and that's the point...it's not all the dazzle and colors that matter, in fact they get in the way, it's the appropriate information. In web land Google simply used the number of references to a web page to see how appropriate or high on the search results it should get. This is the same simple principles...but how profound.
