  • What does knowing the number of "views" tell us about a thread.

10 Points to the person who can give a cogent, rational, non-apologetic answer to the questions posed below, which are based on the premiss set forth just before it. (Please feel free, if you see fit, to dispute the premiss).
    PREMISS:
People might "look" at a thread for a whole host of reasons -- whether it be to read the thread and contribute, or just to lurk, or because the thread's title was ambiguous, or funny, or in some other way remarkable apart from any substantive value it may have, or, even, just by accident, because the person clicked on the wrong button and inadvertently "looked" at the thread for a nanosecond before exiting. And probably for other reasons as well.....
    QUESTION:
In light of the foregoing, what does knowing the number of "views" tell us other than what it says, i.e., does it tell us anything apart from the number of people that have for whatever reason literally just taken a look at the thread?
If the answer to the above question is nothing -- i.e., the number of "views" tells us just that, the number of "views" and nothing more -- then why is this information so prominently featured, instead of, say, the information that used to be present under the old Discussions system, such as the number of unread posts in a particular thread, which is data that actually has a value as something other than a statistic. Knowing the number of unread posts indicates to someone following a particular thread, whether there has been additional contributions to the thread that should be reviewed if one is to remain current on the substance of that particular discussion. The extent of the additional contributions (if any) are readily apparent from the count).
The little, difficult-to-discern-on-my-PowerBook's-screen tiny blue dot can hardly be said to take the place of the unread post count, as it shows the same indicator for one new post as it does for ten or even a hundred.
Thanks for your help with this.

    Hi Scott --
Thanks for your thoughtful reply. It did help, and I've even marked it "helpful" under the new, bizarre point system to evidence this fact. (BTW, my "offer" of a point award was more a misplaced attempt at sardonic humor aimed at deriding the new point system, with which I have a number of strong disagreements, than it was an effort to bribe thoughtful replies like yours. Please know that I really do appreciate the time and effort you took to get back to me on this and meant no disrespect by the "reward" point bounty).
That said, I do have one follow up. You write that "the idea behind this [use of "views" rather than number of posts unread] is that even discounting curiosity, boredom, funny title, et al., the number of folks that have looked at a thread should bear some relation to the number of folks who are having that issue."
I just don't think that that's the case. I don't think it sufficently discounts curiosity, boredom, funny title, et al. Those are some pretty powerful motivations for people to peruse this site. And there are many, many others as well.
Of course I can only speak with certainty of my own personal experience with the Discussions, but based on that, I know have "viewed" numerous threads on subject matters that not only wasn't I experiencing, but on subject matters that I couldn't possibly experience, because it concerned Mac hardware or software that I don't own or have never used.
In some cases, I looked at threads where the subject line sounded interesting, or amusing, or provocative, in other cases I looked at threads that concerned hardware or software that I once owned (and so I thought I might be able to help with the problem at issue), in still other cases the thread concerned software and/or hardware that I was considering purchasing (and wanted to know what I might be getting into). With regard to the former of those two reasons, I know there were many, many instances where, based on the title of the post, I knew that I could help and I viewed the post as a form of oversight (so to speak) to make sure that the responses being left were providing accurate and complete information.
In my "view," though clearly not in the "view" of the Mods, et al. for reasons (thanks to your post) that I can at least better articulate (if not understand or agree with), a thread's number of "views" is susceptible to just too many possible meanings to make it of any real use. The number of unread posts (and by this I refer to the old numeric value of posts not yet read and not that illegible little blue dot used in the new system) may not be perfect information, but it is certainly more useful in my "view" than the number of "views." (I apologize for those poor puns on the word "view," but in my "view" they were unavoidable, sort of. See what I mean
Anyway. I really do thank you for your reply and the time and effort you took to make it. But, alas, with each hour I use these New Discussions, the more convinced I become that my continued time on here is fading. With no more hope of leveling up, with even less hope of ever receiving any tangible sign of "thanks for your help" in the form of + votes (insignificant as they were, at least they were something, everyone like to feel appreciated), with the posts much more difficult to read on my PowerBook's screen and even more difficult to keep track of, and for a bunch of other reasons (some admittedly petty, and some that strike at the core of why and how I use this site), I fear that I will soon be saying farewell.
But till then, thanks once again for your thoughtful reply.

  • What does mean the itune icon with a cable in the iphone screen?

what does mean the itune icon with a cable in the iphone screen?

I'm having exact same problem. I was installing the latest ios7 update (to fix some Facetime bug that I don't have) and this happened. I noticed in some other posts on similar problem to hold down the sleep and on buttons at the same time and tried that. No change. Then I plugged it into my laptop and it said it was in recovery mode. I'm now in the process of restoring the software.
I really hope I haven't lost all my contacts, notes, and photos.

    And the "g" at 10g?

It was started with Oracle 8, included internet i to 8i, Basically one JAVA runtime engine included within the database itself to execute JAVA code, so Oracle 8 became 8i.

  • TS1538 what does error the itunes library file cannot be save (-.50) mean

I keep getting a message that pops up saying. The iTunes library file cannot be saved.  An unknown error occurred. (-50).  What does that mean?  I have had issued with songs duplicating and I can not get that to stop any suggestions for that?

  • What does replacing the bottom plate of the body cost?

    Hello
I am wondering if anyone knows what Apple charges to have the bottom plate of the MacBook Pro replaced. When I was at a store, an employee told me that it "might cost, like, uh, forty bucks," in a way that made me think he was just pulling that price out of his you-know-what. After searching eBay for that part and finding no auctions for less than $100, I assumed that Apple would charge something more like that.
It's really irritating that in order to replace two of my footpads, I must replace the whole bottom plate of the body. Apple is really trying to get people to buy the service plan, and then a new laptop when that runs out. Great for the environment. The whole unrepairable Retina Display MacBook debacle is just more proof of that.

Approaching retirement the Apple store job sounds a lot better than Home Depot, but that is another story
When you were at the store you mentioned in your original post, did you have the MBP along and was it a genius bar person you talked with?  I have found the sales floor people to have a wide range of actual useful knowledge.  The genius bar staff, however, are super.
Why not make an appointment at the genius bar, so you don't have to stand aournd and wait, and talk hard facts about replacement and what options are available.  Definitive, quality information is the best thing to have.

  • What does setting the internet zone security level to high actually do?

I was asked to set the Internet zone security level to high via a GPO, this has been done for a test group of users. The setting has been confirmed, but as far as I can see it has not actually done anything.
Can anyone tell me what changes I should see to the behavior and/or access of websites now the security level is set to high?

    Hi,
Setting the internet zone security level to high might prevent harmful content with maximum safeguards and less secure features are disabled.
When you visit some sites with script pop up, the script will be disabled if you set the security level to the high level. For more information about
the internet zone security level, please refer to this:

If Finder is performing sluggishly, displaying incorrect file icons, etc., quitting and relaunching it will sometimes correct things. Deleting Finder preferences may also help.
Option click on the Finder icon in the Dock and choose relaunch. Or use the Force Quit dialog (Command-option-esc) to quit. Then click on Finder in dock to relaunch. Or use Onyx to add the quit option in the Finder menu. You can also use Activity Monitor to quit Finder.

  • What would be the optimal index creation for this horribly written sql in a third party app that I cannot change?

    SQL:
           SELECT *      FROM ORDERS WHERE ORDERNO = {STR} AND ITEMNO = {##} AND STEP = {##}

That's almost certainly the wrong question.  You don't want the index(es) that will optimize that single query.  You want the index(es) that will optimize your system as a whole.
The absolute best choice for that query would be a clustered index on ORDERNO, ITEMNO, STEP.  But each table can only have one clustered index so you would have to drop any clustered index you currently have and then create the new one.  But creating
or dropping a clustered index can be time consuming on a large table.
So in the absence of any other information, I would recommend trying a nonclustered index on ORDERNO, ITEMNO, STEP.  That will be faster to do and faster to drop if you decide it's not helping.

  • What does rebuild the library database do?

I'm thinking this may help solve my issue.

    Straight from the source
iPhoto 4 or later: Rebuilding the iPhoto Library
"iPhoto has an undocumented feature that allows you rebuild the currently selected iPhoto library. Sometimes rebuilding the library can make it readable if it seems to be unreadable, has multiple missing photos, or if there are other issues related to reading the iPhoto library structure.
iPhoto 4 or later allows you to rebuild the active iPhoto Library. This might be useful if the library has missing photos, appears to be unreadable, or exhibits other issues that seem related to the iPhoto library structure.
Warning: Because some data or photos may not be recovered during the rebuild, you should back up your existing iPhoto Library folder, which is located in your Pictures folder, before using the rebuild feature."

Are you using Creative sound card? If yes what is the model number or name of the sound card? You may wish to provide this information so that the community will know how to assist you.
If you are using onboard audio or another brand of sound card, you may need to check with either the mainboard manufacturer or the other sound card support for the informatuin you need.

  • What does deleting music off iPhone do?

Let me start off by saying that I do NOT use iTunes Match on my iPhone, I sync all my music directly to the device. What does deleting the music do off of the iPhone?  Does it also delete it off the computer?  Does it only delete it off the computer if the music is "consolidated" in the iTunes Media folder?  Does it prevent it from syncing on the phone again but does not delete it from machine?
    Thank you

Deleting music from your iPhone DOES NOT delete the music from your computer. It will automatically not sync the music to your iPhone again unless you specifically say so on the machine.

  • What does mean this....

    My power supply says:
    +3.3V/22A +5V/32A +12V/16A
What does mean the other numbers? and which is the best number?¿

A computer Power supply provides power to the PC.
The PC operates on different voltages, +3.3v, +5v, +12v and even -12v and -5v.
An axample would be a CD drive may require 12V and a floppy drive may only need 5v.
Think of the power supply as a combination of different batteries.
The second part to your numbers is the Current ratings. As each voltage is separate from the other voltages they all have their own Current rating.
So in your power supply the +3.3v battery/(known as rail) can only provide 22Amps, the +5v rail can only provide 32Amps.
To understand how voltage and current are related you need to know a bit about electricity.
Voltage = current X resistance.     Power = Voltage x Current.
Now if a cd drive in your PC required +5v and 16Amps, how many could you have?
The answer is 2, provided they are the same as different CD drives have different specifications.
So if you put 3 of these CD drives in your PC what would happen?
Your power supply will try to provide +5V to all of them and 48Amps (16x3) but this is too much POWER for your power supply to provide, the result is smoke and your power supply will burn.
This applies to all the Voltage rails in the power supply. Therefore the higher the Current rating per Voltage rail, the better the power supply as it can handle more devices which means provide more POWER.
So just incase you are still confused,
The power supply is a combination of batteries, 6 in total. Batteries known as rails.
    +3.3v, +5v, +12v, -5V, -12V, +5vsb
Each battery has a Current rating.
The more current a voltage rail can provide, the better the power supply.
Finally incase you thought this, The batteries are always the 6 values I stated as it is a power supply specification, manufacturers try to get their power supply to match these Voltage values.
    Now numbers mean something
