What does the black check marks in front of the song titles do?

Wow, old discussion from January.
Click on any song in iTunes and then on the edit menu, click on select all. Now right click on any one of those songs and select check selection orcheck all whatever the choice is, I can't remember exactly,

  • What does the yellow check mark mean?

I noticed a change, in the top right where my name is, if I press my name there is now a circle with a yellow check mark. Does that mean something? It use to be green.

It is the Fast User Switching menu item.
White on orange mark denotes the logged in user.
This has been around for sometime.
If Fast User Switching is enabled, one user can login without already logged in user logging out.

  • When booking a one to one session, what does the black arrow with a blue circle moving underneath mean?

When booking a one to one session online, what does the black arrow with a moving blue circle underneath mean?

check with your carrier. Also how many bars do you have? Sometimes only having 1 bar will not send texts or make calls.
BTW the red circle with the exclamation point in it means it failed to send.

  • What does the exclamation point mean next to a song that is unchecked?

what does the exclamtion point mean next to a song that is unchecked?

If you hover over the exclamation mark (or you may need to click on it, I can't remeber), it should tell you. Usually, it means that the original file (for that song) cannot be found, either because it has been moved, renamed or deleted.

  • What does the white question mark in a black circle mean in the itunes wind

I have copied from my old PC my itunes music folders into my new PC. All my music and podcasts now have a white question mark in a black circle next to each line in the first column on the window. When I try to add music to my new nano i can only do this if I first play the song/podcast, this makes the question mark disappear.
Is there a way I can 'uncheck' all these question marks without having to go into each item?
I have not yet tried to sync my old Ipod photo.

    Hi Again
    Page 291 of the Aperture 2 manual goes through the different badges used in Aperture - for the black tick on white background it states;
The image is an album’s pick image, the identifying image for that album,
webpage album, web journal album, Light Table album, or book album.

  • What is the Header Check Mark?

My first try at DW, so lots of simple questions!
When I create a table on a page, in the Propery Inspector, there is an item named "Header" with check  (default) mark in front of it. What is this property and why is it checked by default?

It creates a table with - umm - a header( a <th> element) and not just data cells (<td>). Per se there is no requirement for this, as even data cells can be formatted to look like headers, but it would be important for accessibility, as it defines the tab order and the order in how e.g. screen readers may interpret the elements. These tools understand structure, not content, if you will, so establishing clear hierarchies is always good for them.

  • What does the black screen with large exclamation point mean?

I'm trying to edit, or even just select a photo in iPhoto, but can't get it to come up - just the black screen with a large exclamation point. What does that mean, and how do I get back control of my photos?

It means your database is corrupted and that iPhoto has lost the link between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the actual file.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Explain the Relevance of the Check Boxes in Front of Song Titles

What are those check boxes for in front of every song...some are checked some are not. Seems that even after I've hot synched my ipod that some of them don't go away.
    Please advise?
Macbook Pro Running XP   Windows XP

The check boxes have a few uses:
Unchecked songs will be skipped when playing songs from the library or a selection.
(They will only play when individually clicked on).
Smart Playlists have an option that unchecked songs won't appear.
Unchecked songs will not be burned to CD.
The iPod has an option that if chosen, it won't update unchecked songs

  • What does the dotted circle mean?

When connecting itouch to itunes, what does the dotted circle mean next to a song? Thanks for the help.

    Hi pfn,
From an earlier post on this topic - this may work for you - it's worth a try:
First go to the 'On This iPad/iPod/iPhone' section and note all the tracks that have dotted circles.
In the 'Music' section, un-check/de-select all the tunes noted
    Apply and sync the changes.
Once that completes re-check/re-select the same tunes just un-checked/de-selected in the 'Music' section.
Apply and sync the changes again
Go back into the 'On This iPad/iPod/iPhone' section
Hopefully all the dotted circles will be gone and all the tracks can be played
    See if this helps!
    Cheers,

  • What is the black oblong area on the opposite side from the camera for?

I want to purchase a case for my daughters ipod 5 and i want to make sure everything functions properly with  the case installed. So what does the black oblong area on the opposite side of the camera lens do? What purpose does it serve, or what function does it perform?

That is a plastic antenna cover that allow wifi and bluetooth radio waves to pass through. They can't pass through metal.

  • What does the "check mark" in iTunes beside the name of the song/artist signify?

In iTunes when "MUSIC" is selected, and the list of songs appears. Why are some songs checked and others not? What does the check mark signify or accomplish?

Tracks without a check mark are basically ignored by iTunes but left in the library.  Some people use it for deactivating seasonal (e.g., Christmas) music when they don't want it to play but still want it in their collection.  It also won't be synced.

  • What does the check mark do?

In the timeline, each video clip has a filename shown for both the video and audio track. Immediately to the right of the audio filename is a drop down menu that says "Volume Clip Volume" by default. If I look at the entries in the drop down menu, Volume and Balance, I get it that the audio track has those 2 audio effects assigned. By default, Clip Volume is checked.
What I don't understand is why the check marks are mutually exclusive. If I check Balance -> Balance, it unchecks Volume -> Clip Volume, implying I can't have both at the same time.
That's a roundabout way of asking what does the check mark in that drop down do?
    Bruce.

Ah, I think that led me to the answer. The check mark changes the meaning of the yellow line, since it can only show one thing. If Balance is checked, the yellow line reflects the right/left balance. If Volume Clip is checked, then the yellow line reflects the clip setting. Cool.
    Thanks!
    Bruce.

  • What does the folder with a question mark mean?

When I power on my black Macbook a white screen appears with a folder with a question mark flashing. what does the folder with a question mark mean? I just replaced the hard drive. When I put the install disc in the cd drive makes a very loud whirring noise then eventually the disc pops back out. Any ideas?

    You will need to reinstall:
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    Do the following:
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install the Combo Updater for the version you prefer from support.apple.com/downloads/.

  • "Check Network Connection" - What Exactly Does the TV Check?

    Hi everyone
May I please ask, what exactly does the TV check when I choose "check network connection"?
In other words, when I click the "check network connection", what IP address / servers and ports does it communicate to? What checks does it do?
Because my TV cannot establish a network connection via settings, but the browser works perfectly well,
I would like to carry out the same checks of "check network connection" on my PC.
Then, if failed also on my PC, I would turn to my ISP with the results, as I believe it is the one to fault.

Assuming you're referring to the Airport icon in the menu bar, 'clear/empty' means Airport is turned off, gray bars means Airport is on but not connected to a network, and black bars means Airport is on and connected to a network. Other possible icon states are solid gray with a little computer inset, meaning you're connected to a computer-to-computer created on the Mac, and gray bars with an exclamation point (10.6 only), meaning connected to a network but not authenticated (e.g. wrong password for an 801.2X corporate/university network).
To your question, it's perfectly possible to be successfully connected to a network (black icon) and unable to access the internet. Situations like that would include the network requiring a proxy server, for which you haven't set up the details on in Network Preferences, or you're connected to an open network that requires you to enter information or agree to terms (e.g. a hotel network, where you need to put in your room number and agree to the charges before you can connect to the internet).
