  • What does the number in parentheses after CPU speed mean?

On original iMacs the CPU is given as PowerPC 750 400MHz (2.2) What does the 2.2 refer to? What would the latest version of the PowerPC 750 be marked?

It's probably the release version number of the PowerPC 750.
The G3's are more commonly referred to by the suffix after "750." I believe the last Mac with a G3 was the 900 MHz iBook, and they used the 750FX.
PowerLogix makes some G3 upgrade products that use the later 750GX, up to 1.1 GHz. Unfortunately, none are for the the CRT iMacs.
Some more info about the "G3."

  • What does the number in parenthesis on a Tab represent?

Using Firefox 24.0 on a desktop and laptop, when I open Facebook the Tab title shows the Facebook icon, the number seven in parenthesis (7), and the word Facebook. What does it mean?

Sounds like something added by an extension.
Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode|Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).
*Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window.

  • Java2 Platform - What does the number "2" mean ?

Hi all, it is likely stupic. I have used java for nearly 2 years but until now, I don't know what does the number 2 accompanied with java mean ? It is a kind of naming, versioning or what ?? We have java2 including j2ee, j2se,j2me. The number 2 appears everywhere which remains a question in my mind.
Thanks for reading and perhaps, then answering.
    Regards,
    Hung.

From the release of java language version 1.2 , the specifications for java platform and java api had been standardised. So to landmark the java technology standard, it was named Java2. All the subsequent versions of java are based on the Java2 technology, mostly enhancing the api features and not much in vm level. Like pentium belongs to 486 family, java 1.5 belongs to Java2 family. If u know programming java 1.2, its fair enough to use java 1.5. But that is not true for those only know java 1.0/1.1.
    Now for your vocabulary,
j2se - standard edition of java following java 1.2 specification
j2ee - enterprise edition of java following java 1.2 specification
j2me - micro edition of java following java 1.2 specification
I hope your curiosity has been served.

Supposed to mean that you have edits you haven't saved yet, but they can be kind of random, sometimes.

  • What does the PopUp "Prevent this page from creating additional dialogs" really mean and if I check the Box, how do I undo this if this was the Wrong Thing To Do?

What does the PopUp "Prevent this page from creating additional dialogs" really mean and if I check the Box, how do I undo this if this was the Wrong Thing To Do?
    Details
Constantly, while using Firefox (Beta v 11.0), and/or ESPECIALLY, when I have my eMail @ Mail.com open, I get this PopUp stating: "For security reasons, restarting mail.com Mail is possible only via the mail.com Mail Service. Please close this window and restart mail.com Mail" BUT Then there is a CHECKBOX: "Prevent this page from creating additional dialogs."
I have no idea if Checking this Box is a Good Idea or if it will Screw-Up my mail.com Mail Service...
Anyone have an answer or explanation of the Use of this Little Check-Box?

You do not get any pop-up windows on that website if you tick that box.
That setting is stored in the cache and you should see pop-ups again if you reload the page and bypass the cache.
Reload web page(s) and bypass the cache.
*Press and hold Shift and left-click the Reload button.
    *Press "Ctrl + F5" or press "Ctrl + Shift + R" (Windows,Linux)
    *Press "Cmd + Shift + R" (MAC)

  • What does the number next to my device indicate?

I was recently on iCloud.com and I always see this number in parentheses next to my device. I was simply wondering what it means.
    Thanks in advance,
    Alan

It seems to be a networking issue with Yosemite right now, in which the bonjour service will erroneously generate multiple instances of your Mac on your network, possibly arising due to an issue with wake on demand partnering with a Bonjour sleep proxy running on an Airport Base Station or Time Capsule.  If you are connected to your network through an AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule, you can fix this, at least temporarily, by launching AirPort Utility from Applications>Utilities, selecting the AirPort, then going to Base Station>Restart.  After it restarts, go to System Preferences>Sharing and change your computer name back to it's original name again.  If you haven't updated yet, try installing the 10.10.1 update too.

  • What does the number after my wireless client name mean

I have an airport express and have set up my network properly.  Just recently I have noticed that there is a number (sometimes in parentheses, sometimes not) after the wireless client name when I look at my network with my airport utility.  What does this number stand for and why does it keep changing?

This is a known bug in Yosemite.
    On your Yosemite Macs.......
Open System Preferences (gear icon on the dock)
    Open Sharing
Edit the name of the Mac to what you want
Things may be OK for a day or two, but the (2), (3), (4), etc will come back to visit until we get a fix from Apple
I don't have an AppleTV here to check, but you can probably change the name in the settings for the AppleTV.

  • Re "App Store" on the dock - what does the number that is ringed mean

the number of updates available for your software.

  • What does the message "Another program has control of HP imaging device mean"?  I get this when I am trying to scan.

What does the message "another program ha control of HP imaging mean when I am trying to scan something. How do i correct it?

You may need to ask HP. I had the same issue with a networked (via ethernet) home HP multi-function. Sometimes the only way to get it to scan was to completely disconnect it from the network and connect it to only one Mac with a USB cable. Even that did not alwatys work.
Eventually, Apple started pushing out HP printer updates via Software Update. One of those finally made that error message to go away.
So run Software Update and see it there are new drivers that Apple made avaialble.

  • HT5100 What does the number on the book cover of my iTunes U download mean?

  • What does the number in my dock icon mean?

I thought it meant, for example, three posts not uploaded, but that's not it. Anyone have the same thing?
Here's the icon (might download instead of just appearing in Safari but I don't know how to show it without downloading it by copying the shared URL):

  • What does the icon of a folder with a question mark inside mean?

After an overnight power outage I tried to turn on my iMac this morning, but all I got was clicking sounds and a gray full screen with the icon of a folder with a question mark inside it, blinking. (There's no tool bar that appears anywhere). What does that mean?
I've tried unplugging the system and waiting a while before attempting another boot. Same screen.
I recently (a month ago) upgraded to Snow Leopard from my original OS X software. Never had this sort of a problem before. The iMac was purchased around 2005 or 2006. Intel Dual Core processor.
Thanks for any help on this.

Thanks, Paul, for the prompt reply.Obviously, your answer isn't what I wanted to hear, but feared. When I get home tonight I'll try finding the install disk and booting from that. Fortunately, I still have a MacBook Pro that is running fine.  Incidentally, I have a Western Digital external Hard Drive that has very little, if anything on it. But since I can't open anything on the iMac, I guess I'll have to see if the install disk works before I try to figure out IF I can use that WD-External drive temporarily rather than replace the HD on the iMac. Any clues on what a replacement drive and labor runs for that sort of iMac repair?
