What does the "Other" disk category in iTunes for iOS devices consist of?

I have searched everywhere for an "official" Apple response as to what the "Other" disk category in iTunes for iPads/iPod Tocuhes consists and have not found one.
Apple, can you please answer?
I have multiple devices that contain the Other usage ranging anywhere from 1gb ~ 5gb and I'd like to know what it is.
Thx!

These are user-to-user forums, they are not monitored by Apple.
'Other' contains things such as Safari's cache and cookies, notes, contacts, downloaded emails (and their attachments), and the content of third-party apps. Unless you have, for example, newspaper/magazine apps and/or third-party music or video apps (or other third-party apps with large content) then 1 to 5 gig sounds like too much and you might have some corrupt files.
Have you tried syncing with you computer to see if that reduces it, and/or a reset (press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds ignoring the red slider, after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot). Or you could try restoring to your last backup or back to new.

  • What does the 'Other' summary mean in iTunes

whenever i sync my ipad to iTunes i always see the yellow bar that represent 'other' taking up quite a lot of space, so i'm wonder what does it mean.
i have a lot of ebooks/files in the ipad is it because of this that i have about 1+GB of other space being taken up. i'm afraid that if i continue to add more ebooks/files into my ipad that it is going to eat up all of the space i currently have available.
p.s. if i helps i'm using dropbox, adobe reader, and other various book/managing app to sort and organize my ebooks/files.
p.p.s. is there a way for me to clear out some of the files that is being store in 'other' if it's not important?
thank for the help in advance.

"Other" is app data and settings (including your ebooks in app date), Safari History and bookmarks, Notes, Calendar entries, the camera roll, text and email messages and any photos associated with contacts, - items that do not fall into the media category - apps, music, books, TV Shows, Movies, podcasts and so on.
I have read that "other" should be around 250 - 750 MB in size. Of course, the more files that you have on the device, the larger"other" will be.
If you see 4GB or 5GB of "other" that is probably indicative of a corrupt sync or bad files on the iPad. Sometimes syncing again will clear it up, removing and then resyncing photos might help as well. Sometimes the only thing that works is to restore the iPad.
You can actually see what apps are accounting for the storage on the device. Go to Settings>General>Usage>Storage - tap on the app and you can see how much document and data storage each app is taking up in the documents and data setting.
I have about 1.3 GB of "other" and that may be a bit too much, but my iPad is running great and I'm not about to restore it unless I run into a problem.

  • What does the other mean on my itunes and how do you see what is in your other?

When i was syncing my ipod its other category rose from around 1gb to 42gb in seconds and i do not know what the files are can anyone suggest something, because i have been on other chat things and they said it would be either album artwork or photos

Other is the measure of used space on the iPod not taken up by Audio, Video & Photos. This includes the iPod's library and artwork plus any files you may have copied to your iPod in disk mode. The overhead for the library & artwork data is typically 1-2% of the size of the media, e.g. for 1Gb of Audio & Video expect to have around 15mb of Other. This information is needed for the iPod's operation and cannot be removed.
If you have significantly larger amounts of Other, not related to files you've intentionally placed on the iPod, then these are probably disconnected copies of your media files or iPod libraries left over from failed sync operations. The only way to recover the space is to do a full restore.
If you have copies of all your media in your iTunes library this isn't a problem, but if you've been manually managing the content then you might need to try to recover the files from it first. See this post by Zevoneer on transferring files from the iPod to your computer. Some of the tools rely on the iPod having a healthy library however the manual method mentioned towards the end of the post should work regardless.
Note restoring should clear all files from the iPod's drive however sometimes it doesn't actually seem to work. Options include manually deleting all visible & hidden files & folders via Explorer/Finder or formatting the drive.
When repopulating the drive you may find breaking the process up into smaller stages makes it less likely to fail.
    Break up large transfers
In iTunes select the menu item File... New Smart Playlist. Change the first drop-down box to Playlist, the next to is and the next to Music or whatever playlist holds the bulk of the content you want on your device. Tick against Limit to, type in say 10, then change the drop-down to GB, and set the last drop-down to artist. When you click OK you can enter a name for the playlist, e.g. Transfer. Now sync this playlist to your iPod rather than your entire library. When the sync is complete modify the rule (File... Edit playlist) to increase the size by your chosen amount, then sync and repeat. You can experiment with different size increments, if it doesn't work just choose something a bit smaller until it works each time. Before long you should have all your music on your iPod. Once that's done you can move on to other media such as podcasts, videos, photos, playlists etc.

Other is all data that is not included in the named categories.
It should be a gb or less.  Much more than this indicates corrupt files.  A restore should resolve.

  • When I see the usage on my iPod touch 4 they have categories for how much space is being used where. What does the "other" category contain? Like what could I delete on my iPod to get rid of the "other" category?

What is the Other on my iPhone and How to Remove It
An "other" larger than about 1 1/2 GB usually indicates that the "other" includes corrupted files.
    First try:
"First you go settings/general/usage/music/then left swipe over music and press delete and you would think it deletes your music but it doesn't instead it deletes your other but make sure your ipod is connected to a computer while doing this"

Next, usually restoring from backup eliminated the corrupted files. However, sometimes restoring to factory settings/new iPod is required.

  • HT2729 what does the "other" category consist of when syncing iPhone

what does the "other" category consist of when syncing iPhone

"Other" data is real data that you put on your phone by using the built in apps. It is not music, not videos, not pictures and not App Store app data. It is "OTHER" meaning everything that does not fall into these categories. Such as:
    email messages and attachments
    Reminders
    Calendar entries
    Contacts
    Text messages
    iMessages
    MMS messages and attachments
    Genius data
    Music cover art
Music library database index (but not the music itself)
    Operating system settings
    Safari cache
    bookmarks
    Game Center status
    Music catalog
You will find posts from people who said they recovered over 3 GB of space by just deleting old text messages.
If you want Other to be smaller you will have to keep less data on your phone; delete old MMS and texts, delete old email (especially from the "deleted" folder), clear the cache, eliminate cover art.
Sometimes "Other" includes data corruption. If you suspect this is a possibility try connecting to iTunes and click the Restore iPhone button. First restore from backup; the Other doesn't get any smaller you can Restore again and set up as New, then add your content back separately from your backup.

  • What does the recovery disk assistant store?

    hello everyone, my questions:
1.what does the recovery disk assistant store?
2.is it necessary to use the recovery disk assistant often or is it enough to use once.
    thanks
    Fatih.

As it said in the link I posted:
has same capabilities as the built-in Lion Recovery: reinstall Lion, repair the disk using Disk Utility, restore from a Time Machine backup, or browse the web with Safari. This drive can be used in the event you cannot start your computer with the built-in Recovery HD, or you have replaced the hard drive with a new one that does not have Mac OS X installed.
And here it is explained further:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718
It stores some tools (Disk Utility) to repair your drive and lets you connect to the app store to re-download the OS or restore it from a Time Machine backup. That's it.
And it will re-install or restore your system (OS), it will not touch your files. However,
NOTE: before doing anything like that, it is wise to have a complete backup - things can happen.

  • What does the startup Disk do ?

i'm a new mac user, and i still don't know what all the option on the mac does, one of those is the startup disk
i really like to know what does the startup disk do .
    thank you

The hard drive would need to be formatted properly and have a valid operating system on it.
For example, if your computer shipped with OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard), the external hard drive would have to be formatted correctly and have Snow Leopard installed on it. Once the installation is completed, the drive should be bootable.

  • I have the Jetpack 4GLTE, what is the Mbps download and upload speeds for this device?

I have the Jetpack 4GLTE, what is the Mbps download and upload speeds for this device?

The avgrage real speed will be more in the area of 25 to 38 Mbps  You would need to be in a strong signal area with high grade cell tower service and low customer use to even reach 50 Mbps.
From Verizon page.  Just be aware that using the MiFi 6620L can cost a lot of money. And you can thank the device's fast performance for that. In my testing around the San Francisco Bay Area, rathe device delivered blazing-fast download speeds that nged between around 10Mbps to around 40Mbps. At those speeds, you can burn through 4GB of data in just less than an hour. Once you reach the cap, of course, you'll have to pay somewhere between $10 to $15 for each additional gigabyte, depending on the plan you sign up for.

  • HELP!!!!!!  What does the "Other" category mean when iPhone is on iTunes???

    Hey,
I was fixing to sync my 3G iPhone when i realized i didnt have enough room for what i wanted because the "other" category is taking up so much space. Ive reset iTunes and iPhone but still see so much space taken up by "other." I've deleted all emails and texts and only have a few pictures on my iPhone but the "other" still takes up over 3gigs on my iPhone.
What is the "other" section and how do i get rid of items that the phone puts in the "other" category???
Also, as another seperate problem, i believe, i cant seem to locate the application link in my itunes library anymore for some reason even though the tab under the iPhone device link recognizes my applications in iTunes. How do I get the Applications link back in my iTunes library?
    THank you so much!!!

    OK,
I checked my prefernces and you were right, the applications weren't checked. Thank you.
As far as my "other" problem.....before i do the restore, how do I backup my iPhone? When i clicked on restore a moment ago it said it will erase my phone but i thought that iTunes periodically backedup my phone anyways.

  • When I block my caller Id what does the other person see.

My question is when I block my number/caller id on my iphone what does the reciever of the call see? Restricted/blocked or could it possibly be a bunch of numbers?? Like 13 digits. would it depend on the phone the other person has like if it is an old flip phone?
(when scrolling down I dont know the operating system) so ignore my answer to that if it even shows??

Depends on the carrier you use and the recipient's device. More than likely Blocked.
