What does the Pink circle segment that appears in the center of  the Tool bar

My iMac has been freezing up the last couple of weeks. It is locked up right now and I cannot access or change things with the mouse on the screen.
There is a pink circle segment  in the center of the toolbar at the top of the screen??? Can anybody tell me what that means and whether there is a fix for what is going on with my iMac?

You apparently have had a hardware failure, most likely, and should take your Mac in to let an Apple Genius diagnose it.

What does the bookmark bar do? How does it work?

You can use the bookmarks bar in Safari to have links to some sites permanently shown at the top of the screen below the address field and icons - so you just have to tap the link on the bar to go to that site as opposed to tapping the bookmarks icon and finding the link in there. So it's just a slightly quicker way to go some of your more regularly used sites

  • What does the progress bar mean?

I have just started using TM after installing Leopard a few weeks ago. My plan is to continue to use Super Duper to do a weekly, bootable backup, but to use TM for essentially data backup. With that in mind, I have excluded system files, applications, and other partitions on the backup drive, figuring that the actual amount of data to be backed up will be relatively small.
On it initial backup the progress bar showed 30 GB possible and when the progress bar showed 10 GB, which was far more than I had anticipated, I stopped it, thinking that I needed to fine tune what I was excluding. When I look at the file, backups.backupdb, I see that it's right around 2 GB right now.
This leads me to believe that the progress bar on the initial run is only indicating how much of the data has been evaluated not necessarily how much has been backed up. Can someone confirm this or set me straight on just what the progress bar is telling me?
    -Bill

One of the things I noticed is that I had indeed left out one of the partitions on the very drive that I am using as the TM backup. I know that TM won't backup its own backup, but I don't think it can identify other partitions on the same drive. The partition in question actually contains the SuperDuper backup, something I don't need on TM. I did go back and exclude it and the calculated backup dropped from 30 GB to 20 GB, which is still way in excess of what I am actually wanting to back up.
Given what you have said about potentially damaging the backup, perhaps I need to start over. How would I go about doing this, just delete the existing backupdb file? Then go in and rework the excluded files and really narrow things down. This does seem, however, to defeat the process somewhat, the idea of just let it do its thing.
Since my photos and music are already kept on an external drive, on the same partition, in fact, that I will be keeping the TM backup, those are files which do not come into the TM picture. Actually the more I think about this the more dicey it is becoming.
What I have been doing up until now is doing a weekly SuperDuper backup and copying my Documents folder separately. I have five folders, representing up to five weeks in a month and would copy the Documents folder into week one the first week of the month and so on throughout the month. Then next month I would overlay week by week what I had done before. That assured me that I would always have one month of Documents should I restore a SuperDuper backup beyond what was in the Documents folder on that particular SD version.
What I am wanting to do is essentially the same thing except use TM to backup the Documents folder. Perhaps that's a too narrowly defined and too difficult to implement use of TM. Perhaps I have to rethink this. Comments?

  • What does the spotlight bar in my podcast page do ?

    Hi,
In my iWeb podcast page, there is a spotlight bar. At first I thought it was for searching words or something in the podcasts, but it leads to a page with no results "powered by .mac" .
What does it really do ?
    Sincerly.

My website is posted in mobileme but my searches always lead to "no results". Are you talking about the blog or the podcast pages ?

  • What does the scroll bar do?

When scrollng a Safari page using my fingers, on my new iPad(3), the scroll bar on the right shows up. However, I do not seem to be able to "grab" it and use it.
How do I use that scroll bar to move up and down a page rapidly?

Are you saying there is no fast way to go to the bottom or back to the top? That the scrollbar is just for show?
I have some webpages that are very long and it still takes a dozen or more flicks to get to the bottom.
    I am not impressed.

    Try the following to fix:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

what does the orange circle with white arrows mean?

Well, I've not seen that one before. In fact I had to click on it so as to read the tiny
text, then it appeared in another window as a .png image... so I retyped it  + also
supplied a .jpg of the same image of different size. Too wide: automatically scale.
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent" has been modified and will not be repaired.
...maybe this is large enough to see without clicking? It probably scaled small.
•About the actual topic in your reply, in regular size text:
    { did you upgrade from an older Mac OS X? from what?}
You mean it could not or would not boot SafeBoot?
Here's an official support topic page about it.
•OS X: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode?
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1564?viewlocale=en_US
Could be you need to start from a boot volume, or Recovery partition to repair it.
That is a more detailed way to repair disk & repair disk permissions, unmounted.
Not sure about that SUID thing, though. It may revert after a normal startup.
Maybe someone can offer better 'ways & means'... LOL!
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • What does the little circle with a line in it mean when in edit mode? how can I get rid of it?

What does a little circle with a line in it mean when I am trying to edit? how do I get rid of it?

    robynlwitheridge
What version of Premiere Elements are you using and on what computer operating system is it running?
From your description "little circle with a line in it", that sound like a symbol when you are trying to do a cannot do operation.
What exactly are you doing in your edit activities when you see this circle with a line in it? Is it at the end of the mouse cursor?
Can you post a screenshot of it?
If my first impression of what this is happens to be correct, then "How do I get rid of it?" answer comes from
    a. defining what you want to do
    and
    b. correcting any mis-steps you are taking in doing that
We will be watching for your follow up.
    Thanks.

This is probably a stupid question, but what does the red circle with a number in it mean on iCal? It looks just like the emails notification. I do not have anything do or up in my cal.

Actually, another person on the "more like this" had the right answer. It meant I had a notification for an invite that I needed to respond to.
Hope this helps you as much as it helped me.

What does the ~ symbol mean next to an event?  I have never seen this before but today when I edited a few events this appeared next to the event.

    Greetings,
Hm. I've never seen that in iCal.  In some other Applications the tilde "~" indicates a restore point or a before / after for a file.  My guess is there is a broken cache file in iCal.
    Try:
Go to Apple Menu > System Preferences > Language & Text > Formats > Region. Region should be set to the country of your choice. Do not have it set to "Custom" as this can have unexpected results in the iCal window.
If that doesn't resolve the issue:
    1. First make an iCal backup:  Click on each calendar on the left hand side of iCal one at a time highlighting it's name and then going to File Export > Export and saving the resulting calendar file to a logical location for safekeeping.
    2. Go to iCal > Quit iCal
    3. Remove the following to the trash and restart your computer:
    Home > Library > Caches > com.apple.ical
Home > Library > Calendars > Calendar Cache, Cache, Cache 1, 2, 3, etc. (Do not remove Sync Cache or Theme Cache if present)
--- NOTE: To get to "Home > Library" in Lion: Click anywhere on the desktop and then click on the "Go" menu at the top of the computer screen while holding down the "option" key on the keyboard.  You will see "Library" in the menu.
    4. Launch iCal and test.
    If the issue persists:
    1. Go to iCal > Quit iCal
    2. Remove the following to the trash and restart your computer:
    Home > Library > Caches > com.apple.ical
Home > Library > Calendars > Calendar Cache, Cache, Cache 1, 2, 3, etc. (Do not remove Sync Cache or Theme Cache if present)
Home > Library > Preferences > com.apple.ical (There may be more than one of these. Remove them all.)
--- NOTE: Removing these files may remove any shared (CalDAV) calendars you may have access to. You will have to re-add those calendars to iCal > Preferences > Accounts.
    3. Launch iCal and test.
    Hope that helps.

  • What does the dotted circle mean?

When connecting itouch to itunes, what does the dotted circle mean next to a song? Thanks for the help.

    Hi pfn,
From an earlier post on this topic - this may work for you - it's worth a try:
First go to the 'On This iPad/iPod/iPhone' section and note all the tracks that have dotted circles.
In the 'Music' section, un-check/de-select all the tunes noted
    Apply and sync the changes.
Once that completes re-check/re-select the same tunes just un-checked/de-selected in the 'Music' section.
Apply and sync the changes again
Go back into the 'On This iPad/iPod/iPhone' section
Hopefully all the dotted circles will be gone and all the tracks can be played
    See if this helps!
    Cheers,

  • What does the red bubble mean that is near the phone symbol and moves over to the vm symbol when phone is turned on

What does the red bubble mean that appears near the phone symbol then moves over temporarly to the VM symbol, when first turning the phone on.  It goes away with a few seconds

It means you have no signal, or if on the VM icon, it means to visual voicemail.  Sounds like you're just getting it temporarily until the phone establishes a signal.

  • What does the icon next to the location icon mean? It has a lock with an arrow circling it.

What does the icon next to the left of thelocation icon mean and to the right of the time? It has a lock with an arrow circling it. Thanks

It's the portrait orientation lock.  When on, and that icon showing, the screen won't rotate to landscape view when you rotate the phone.
To turn it off - double click the home button to show the recently opened apps bar, slide it to the right showing the iPod controls and the Portrait Orientation Lock on the left.

  • What does the lock with a circle around it mean in the top right corner of my iPhone 5c

What does the lock with a circle around it mean in the top right corner of my iPhone 5c

It means that your screen rotation is locked. Open up the control center by sliding your finger up from the very bottom of the screen, and click on the screen rotation lock symbol, which is the same symbol you see on the status bar.
