What Drive is in my Portable?!

I tried all mentioned methods, but as I had figured, I only got info returned based on "Helium2" "Iomega" & "USBSTOR". So I decided to just go ahead and disassemble to see if I got a good drive or not. It turned out that it wasn't that bad to disassemble. I decided to go in through the top, so as not to pry on the converter board. Once I dug in as far as I could go, I pried on the bottom end and it basically just slides out. I provided some pictures if anyone was curious... Turned out to be a Toshiba internal drive, not a WD Black like other product lines, or even a Samsung like it was rumored during its launch. Incredibly disappointed as I am in no way a fan of Toshiba consumer drives, IME.The top was held down with some adhesive, pry tool pulled it up.
Top end, 2 screws holding down a bracket.
Removed bracket
I started to pry on the...

So I have had an Iomega Helum 500GB for some time (great drive). It doesn't appear to have a proprietary adapter, but rather a 5-pin USB to SATA converter board (so I can use it as an internal drive). I've always wondered what drives are in the Helium lineup. From seeing the Iomega Select/eGo/etc disassembled, I'm guessing WD Caviar Black. But I also read about some Samsung drives making it into some of the portables. I don't want to destroy the enclosure (it would be destroyed on this model from what I can tell. The top/bottom have very little to work with, and it's soft aluminum), or void the warranty from gouges (still within a period for a short while longer), just to satisfy curiosity.
I know that LenovoEMC bought Iomega a while back, but does anyone know what drives are in the Iomega Helium externals? This is strictly for...

    Hi,
How do i find out what drives are available in a particular system either by giving the systems ipaddress or the systems name...

You can't do that. That would be a real security risc.

  • Migration Assistant doesn't allow me to choose what drive.

Well, I got my new computer. I tried to migrate a drive from my old computer using Migration Assistant. and it doesn't allow me to choose what drive.
In my old computer I have 5 drives. The original HD (was 10GB, was replaced last year by a 40 GB) and on my Hitachi 250 GB drive that I added 2 years ago, there's a partition with 4 drives.
I wanted to migrate one particular drive from there (called Current work).
First I did a mistake. I connected both computer via the firewire in the afternoon when there was enough daylight so I don't have to do it later at night (the computers are under the table.) I thought it's OK since I'm not pushing any button yet ("migrate now", "transfer", and such).
I turned on the new computer and a message appeared: you must restart.
That's strange, I said to myself. it's a brand new computer. Usually It says that when there's a problem, but OK I restart and when it's back on, I see that my external drive (Neptune from OWC which was still hooked up in the old computer) is on the desktop. And it took just a few seconds. I open it and all the files, etc. are there. It did copy the whole external drive !
I'm not an computer expert but I believe the Mac Pro did notice that's there's a firewire hooked up and then, without asking me, migrated the external drive and that's why it asked me to restart. I would have prefer if it tells me "restart so migration can begin".
I don't mind for now that my external drive is on my new computer. I can always erase it if I don't want it. It is still external right ? so it doesn't intrude on the 640 GB of my HD so I just keep it.
But it also copied/migrate Mac HD 40 GB which is full of OS 9 and I almost never use it anymore. I don't want it coz it has applications and they advise not to migrate applications (certainly not applications with issues).
They say migrate folders, settings but re-install applications.
And it migrated also another drive called "Scratch" which has only personal date no system, no software.
Anyway, I erased everything and re-installed using the Install disk that came with the computer.
BTW, what they say in the manual (p. 90: Re-installing the software that came with your Mac Pro) is different than what really happens.
They say insert disk, double- click on Install and then click options in the "Select a destination" pane of the installer. Then click "erase and install" Problem is: there's no "Select a destination" pane. Or any options.
I had to go to Disk utility and erase, then re-install OS X.
Then re-install the applications using "Install applications" (the other disc that came with the computer. )
OK, I did that. Then while everything is empty, new, I used Migration Assistant.
Now here is the reason why I post this.
They say hold T key until you see a firewire icon then select a drive. I can't see when there's an icon coz I have only one monitor, so I just hold and hold the T-key and turn on the old computer. The screen shows "waiting for you other computer to restart" 2 min.... 5 min... 7 min. Nothing happens. I stop holding.
I look at the desktop and I see that the icon of the old 40 GIG Mac HD is there. (and I believe with a firewire logo, but not sure about that.)
I have the impression that if I kept the T-key longer it would have migrate the other drives as well.
They say keep the T-key down until you see the firewire (then let go I suppose. As I said I don't see what's going on on the desktop of my old computer so I kept the T-key for a few minutes. I also tried another time to let go after 1-2 min. No difference.
I shut down the new comp. and the old computer screen appears automatically (both are connected to the monitor; the old with analog port, the new with digital port) and sure enough the firewire icon is moving on the screen.
I go back to the new computer and put the old 40 GIG Mac HD in the trash. Actually, when it touched the trash, I just saw an eject icon and the drive disappear. Did not go in the trash which is empty. So I guess I ejected, not sure what's the difference but I looked for it to see if it's anywhere in the computer. Could not find it. Not in the HD, not in the desktop. Good, I don't want it there. Is it hidden somewhere ?
So I tried again but wondering perhaps the old computer should RESTART not turn on (it was off) so now I wait until it's on, then push restart. I hear the gong when it shuts off but that's it, no other gong when it comes back. I keep the T-key. But nothing happened. Just see the message "waiting for your other computer to restart"
PS: BTW Target mode (which seems to me similar to Migrating with "Migration Assistant") will not work for me because it must be SATA, mine is ATA.
I didn't try but read that it has to be SATA.
Is it the same ? In migrating they say hold down the T-key (T for target)
And how come that my 40GB HD which is ATA did migrate (not that I wanted too but still).
Also, this drive ("Current Work") that I want to migrate to the new computer is in my external drive. Can't I just drag it ? If it has only personal data, files and folders I know I can, but It has system (OS X) and applications. It's the one I use and boot on, in my old G4 but I want to transfer Files and folders and settings, so the new computer will know what are my Safari preferences, Automatic fill-in, and perhaps it will move my iTunes music Library too ?
Basically everything except applications. Although I would like my Nikon scanner to be in the new computer as well as the LaCie DVD recorder but I guess I can do that later, separately ?
What are the settings or info I need ? Because if it's just Safari preferences, automatic fill-in and other such small thing, it might be better to just do it again in the new comp and forget about the hassle of migrating.

Try getting into Windows and then plugging in the Superdrive. The drive will only be attached to one OS or the other, not both.

what driver do I need to connect t0 Brother MFC-9325CW?

I believe the Brother drivers are included in the OS installation. Try installing the printer. As you go through the process the Mac will tell you if it discovers the printer. That tells you do not need a driver.
If this is a new printer being connected for the first time, I personally prefer to connect with a USB cable and complete the first steps. Wireless printer connections are much more work, and can be done after you have a functioning printer.

  • Firewire 800 enough for burn using dual burners? And what drive to buy?

    I have a Mac Pro with a SuperDrive. (I think it's a Pioneer).
Tomorrow I'll open the lid and check if the connectors are SATA or IDE.
Being either one, I now wonder if I can continue to burn from my external FW800 disc, using the "multiple burner option" in Toast Titanium 10?
Or should I place the data on the system drive and burn from there instead?
And when I'm about to buy a new burner, should I go for a BD burner, anyway?
And the most important thing: what drive should I buy?
    Thanks,
    Niklas
Message was edited by: Niklas Wikman

Looks like the current burner (Pioneer DVR-112D, rev. BC14) is connected over ATA/ATAPI.
So I'll have to look for a DVD burner with IDE interface, then?
(And then I guess BD is not an option)
My Mac Pro is a 3,1 with Quad-Core Intel Xeon. SMC (fwiw) is 1.25f4
    Any tips/recommendation is higly appreciated!

  • Which Build and what drives for a raid? One for Harm Maybe :)

Hi, I've been waiting to get an evga sr-2 but they are so hard to get a hold of at the moment I was starting to wonder whether I should go for something like this in the meantime. http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=BU-031-OB
I always wait longer and do big upgrades instead so am willing to wait another month if necessary to get my hands on an sr-2 but was looking at Harms Beast spec on the premiere pro benchmarks and noticed he gets pretty impressive results from a single i7
Just wondering if overclocked sr-2 running at 4.2Ghzplus is worth twice the money.
Also, No matter which board i end up with the first step will be using their onboard raid to run a raid 5 array with 6 discs. (they don't do raid 3)
Eventually I plan to get an areca card but don't know what drives to use. WD Re4's (2Tb) seem to be pretty good for raid and critical use for at £200 they are a lot more than WD blacks. Just wondering what to do for as it's alot of money especially if I decide to get an areca card and use raid 30?
    Thanks, Michael.

    Michael,
As you can see, Chris' top rank in the PPBM5 Benchmark reflects the enormous power of dual X5680's. Admitted, it is much more expensive than a similarly overclocked single i7-980X, like Studio North. However there is a distinct advantage of a dual Xeon system, in the sense that you will have 12 DIMM slots and can easily use the very affordable 2 GB sticks to get 24 GB, which saves a lot in comparison to 6 x 4GB sticks on a X58 mobo. Or you can expand memory to 48 GB should you desire so.
You may have seen this review already, but in case you missed it, look here: http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/motherboards/2010/08/17/evga-classified-sr-2-review/1
If you consider that there will be further improvements in multi-threading and in some exporter modules in CS Next, the advantage of more cores and more memory will probably increase over a 980X.
As for disks, the WD RE4's are a great choice. Depending on your storage requirements, and your timing for an Areca controller, it may make sense to start with the 1 TB version or the 1.5 TB version and then later add another 6 x 1 TB or 6 x 1.5 TB. That will give you a 12 disk array with the same gross capacity as 6 x 2 TB for approximately the same amount, but because of the larger array will give you better performance or in the case of 1.5 TB models even more storage capacity. I would advise against the Caviar Blacks because of the TLER issue.
Planning ahead for the Areca, you have to keep in mind a way to transfer your data from a mobo array to an Areca array. You may have to first create a new 6 disk array on the Areca, copy your data from the mobo array to the new Areca array, then move one disk at a time from the mobo to the Areca and define it first as a hot-spare and then expand the array. You have to do that for all the existing disks, but that way you have no problems in getting all your data on the new array intact. I probably would use a Raid3 or Raid5 with one hot-spare, so you end up with 11 x Raid3/5 plus one hot-spare, or a 12 x Raid6.
    Hope this helps.

  • What drive in Mac Pro early 2008 or 2009?

I purchased a Western Digital Black 1Tb SATA hard drive and it did not work in any of my three Mac Pros (two are Early 2008, one is early 2009). It made a strange noise and was never seen by Disk Utility no matter what I did.
There are already three other drives in these machines, some of them are Western Digital drives and they work fine, but they were purchased years ago.
I returned the drive and purchased a Western Digital Red 1Tb drive in replacement. I chose a Red because I will be setting up a RAID system soon but needed it temporarily as storage in the Mac Pro. It didn't work at all in the Mac Pro Early 2008. At first it seemed to work but at restart, the system said the disk was not formatted, although I had formatted it successfully (but it really took a long time) with Disk Utility.
On the Mac Pro Early 2009 formatting was difficult. I tried to make two partitions instead of one and finally managed to format it and even copy some files to it. But Disk Utility couldn't verify it and Disk Warrior said it was having problems because of disk malfunction.
Apparently, I should be able to put a 1Tb disk in these machines, and the SATA 3 drives are supposed to be compatible with the SATA 2 of the Mac Pros. But it doesn't work although we spent hours trying everything and reading everything we could find on the subject.
My question is: are these drives supposed to work in older Mac Pros from 2008 and 2009?
If not, what drive should I purchase for these machines? I need a quiet, fast drive.
    Thanks.
    Ellen

Yes, I'm aware that SSD is the way to go. I have one (OWC Mercury Extreme Pro SSD), 480 GB, as my boot disk. It has the system and all my apps, plus my virtual machines for Windows. These are used very little, only to check if things we put on the web are OK in the various Win Browsers. But they need to be fast because otherwise, I'll go nuts.
About using SSD for Photoshop's scratch, I seem to remember reading something saying that it will reduce the drive's life somewhat. I don't know how much or if it matters, or if it's the better choice anyway.
Actually, the reason we still have these old Mac Pros (two for work, one for the server) is that, every year, we hoped to see some major improvement and put off upgrading because we didn't feel the new ones announced year after year would change our life.
We've been using Macs for almost 30 years now. The first was a Mac Plus 512k, in January 1985. (My first computer (in 1981) was a ZX81, with 1k of RAM... I did get a 16 k plug in extension though). We usually upgrade when the specs show a speed improvement of at least 4X, or when the architecture changes radically. All this to say we are now waiting to spend all our Christmas money on some shiny new tubular Mac Pros. We will then have to reconsider our whole setup,  and add some external Thunderbolt drives. At that time, I'll be back to discuss the best options. Till then, this will do.
And the reason we tried a Red was because we thought maybe we could use it later on a dedicated machine used only for music over the network. The drive is used just about continuously all day long. Bad idea obviously.

  • What driver to use?

    What driver to use?Hey All,
I have been using the default Creative drivers since I got my X-FI Titanium a couple months ago. Overall I have had a good experience with them but I am finally tired of the random cracking/distortion that I get every once in a while when my computer has been for awhile that forces me to reboot.
So I am wanting to try out some moded drivers. I am a little unsure on which one is the best to go with. So far I have all of these downloaded:
    Daniel_K X-FI Support Pack 2.0
    Daniel_K X-FI Install Disc .0
    Robertmc8 X-FI PAX Audio Suite DVD 200 V2.0
    Robertmc8 X-FI?PAX Driver V3.0
Now I know that the last is just the driver while the other three all suites with all the applications. So I am assuming that the 3. driver is just a updated one to use with this DVD Suite. So what are your guys opinions on these drivers and which is the best to go with? I primarily play games on my computer but I watch a lot of online videos and listen to music from time to time if that hel
    ps.
Please let know me what you guys think. Thanks for your time!

  • What drive to replace the superdrive with?

A few days ago the superdrive in my Powermac G4 (MDD - 1.42Ghz) decided to start making tons of circular scratches in any disc that is inserted into the computer. I have a feeling it's going to have to be replaced (actually - this is the second superdrive in the computer. First one was replaced under warantee within the first year... but that's not an option anymore...)
So... what drive should I use to replace it? Is it best to stick with whatever is currently in it - or is it possible to replace it with one of the new dual-layer drives found on dealmac? Most of those don't seem to be specifically mac compatible, but often times things like that work anyway. Does anyone have any experience replacing their superdrive with something else? How does iDVD, itunes, etc. work? Thanks!!!

I installed the Pioneer DVR-111D in my MDD G4 and have not had any problems using it in any applications. I moved the OEM Combo drive down to the second bay and use it as the disk source for copying CDs and DVDs.
BTW, IMO, the 111D is a very quiet and smooth operating drive compared to most optical drives I've heard.
Note, you have to remove the 111D's tray faceplate to use it in the MDD G4 as the faceplate will interfere with the opening and closing of the flapper doors on the MDD G4. Not a big deal, just pry it up gently from the bottom with your fingers and it will pop off.
    Good luck.
    Carl B.
