What duel layer dvds to use?

0Hi, I'm wanting to start using duel layered dvds to backup iphoto libraries but i'm not really sure which ones to buy.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to make and reliability?
thanks

I've always found Verbatim DVD-R DL (the regular not gold plated) the most reliable.

  • Duel Layer DVD in iDVD

I am using iDVD to convert VHS to DVD and want(ed) to use Duel Layer DVDs so I could put more video on one DVD. My problem is that at 30 to 45 mins. from completion during the Multiplexing process the DVD pops out and the program says DONE but it also says it has 30 mins. to go.  When you put the DVD back in, the DVD is blank.  What do I need to do.  Is it a problem with iDVD or just using the Duel Layer DVDs.  By the way, I have a MacBook Pro 17".

In response to MartinR - I am using the following:
    MacBook Pro: MacBookPro6,1
    OS X  Mountain Lion - 10.8.4
I used a VCR hooked up to my MBP through an ION VIDEO2PC, I converted all of them to mp4 after I edited all of the snow and junk out of the videos in iMovie - They are all now mp4 files
    iDVD version 7.1.2
    Memorex DL DVD+R
I still can burn single layer DVDs, BUT they are doing the same thing when I try to make multiples, making copies through iDVD after the intial one is burned.  So I have to cancel out of the burning process,  it usually works and take about 18 mins. vs the 2-3 hrs. that it takes the inital DVD to burn
If it means anything I have/had all of my video files on an external 2TB hard drive and now I copy the files I plan to use back to the main drive on the MBP to see if that helps things
In response to Courcoul - I did a Get Info on the blank DL DVD and it said 6,148 bytes (8 KB on disk) for 1 item
I value both of your opinions, thank you both for responding, tell me what you think could be the hang-up on all of this since I gave you more info.  If you need more info the make a better decision just let me know.

  • External Plextor Duel Layer DVD Writer  or  Superdrive

Still looking at Macbook 2.0 with Superdrive
Already own a fast Plextor duel layer external burner.
Will Macbook and all programs be able to use/access this drive, as well as / just like a Superdrive ?
Other than the convienience of a Superdrive being built into Macbook, I can't see any benefit downgrading to a Superdrive.
    DO YOU ?
    Macbook 1.83   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   Combo Drive, 2G, 120G HD

well when I buy something and I have to choose between features that can't be upgraded later like processor, or in this case Superdrive or Optical Drive. I always just get the best one. unless moneys an issue thats different. but if your not necessarily on a budget get the best. you won't regret having something you might not end up using much. but getting the minimum you later might end up wishing you had it. I find having a superdrive handy for when I go to a friends place or go out of town and need to burn something it really comes in handy.

  • Dual layer DVD exhibits blurred motion

Have a project that is 2 hours and 35 minutes. Takes up 6.8 gigs. Project info shows yellow in the bars. I originally did a draft in iDVD 08 (using three discs) and all slow motion sequences or any clips with fairly quick motion are fine. To put the project on one disc, burned a dual layer in Studio Pro 4 and same clips have a blurred look to them re: motion.
Am I trying to cram too much on one dual layer DVD? Using Verbatim 8.5 gig DVD's.
thanks in advance for any advice

    Hi
It seems you are encoding from inside DVDSP, then probably your encode settings are creating the low quality. Besides that, you must be getting AIFF audio encoding, what takes a lot of the free available space.
My recommendation is to use Compressor to encode your UAdio to AC3 and take the standard High Quality 90 min preset for the video. With that video encoding preset you can fit 90 min in a single layer DVD and double in a dual layer one.
Then import the M2V and AC3 file in DVDSP.
    Hope that helps !

  • Why does "Please insert a duel-layer disk" pop up when I'm half way through burning a DVD in FCP X?

I work for a Sports Media company and it is important to burn our games to DVD as quickly as possible. Everytime FCP X is halfway through the burning of the DVD (each game is about 1-1.5 hours long) that pop up about the duel-layer disk comes up. What is that? I never had a problem doing this before. Also what other kind of DVD is there? What is better to use? Thanks a lot!

No catch that I know of - just more content (and more expensive). I don't use FCP X, but is there a screen where you can check the size of your project? In iDVD, I can see my project here:
With that I can keep track of the size.

  • DVD Duel Layer

    I have a Pavillan a6130n with 16x DVD(+/-) R/RW 12X Ram (+/-) R DL Lightscribe.
I can burn to a CD or Single layer DVD but not to a Dual  Layer DVD.
    Thanks

    Hi bullfrog,
The title indicates duel layer and your optical drive supports double layer.
What happens when you try to burn to Double Layer media?  The specifications for your PC do indicate DVD Double Layer write once media.
Download Imgburn (it's a freebie) and use it to determine what media types are supported by your optical drive.
This link will show what to look for with Imgburn. Look at the Device Capabilities.
You can use Imgburn to search for an optical drive firmware update.
HP also has firmware updates for optical drives listed under VISTA software.
Generally Verbatim optical media has better compatibility with optical drives compared to cheaper brands.

  • Has anyone used dual layer DVDs?  It took 4.5hrs to copy A 5.3GB movie!

I always thought it would be nearly impossible to fill up an entire DVD with one project, but when I went to copy to a regular DVD my project was .6GB too big....so I went out and bought some Memorex dual layer discs (which, btw are like 10 times more expensive). I put the dvd in and waited for it to burn....and waited....and waited. 4 1/2 hrs later it was done. I tried to play it on my $50 DVD player and it kept making noise and skipping. I don't know why this happened, but I'm certainly not happy. Rather than screw around with these dual layers again I'd love to simply fit my project onto a normal blank DVD. so, is it possible to make a 5.3GB project a 4.7GB project without deleting anything?
    Mac G5

i'll try to answer everyone's questions and clarify any confusion.
first off: I'm doing this for local cable access television. they wanted me to do something educational and at the same time entertaining that that could kill an 1+. since I'm an art historian I decided to do artists work throughout a particular period accompanied by music from when the works were created. so, for this project 'Roy Lichtenstein: Works of the 1960s' I have over 150 images accompanied by 30+ songs. each image has all the info displayed (which gets 1/2 cut off when i play it on the tv) and fades and transitions. When you're watching it, it's surprisingly relaxing and the time goes by much faster than you'd think (imagine one of those music radio channels on your tv, just with interesting images).
now that you know what I'm doing...
in iMovie the project takes up 20+gb as I mentioned.
I use iDVD but don't really know what I'm doing so when I say it's 5.3GB, I mean, when I look in iDVD at what percentage of space is available on a normal 4.7GB cd it says the project is 5.3GB, or too big to fit on a single layer DVD. I'll have to go back and look at my settings, but I'm pretty sure all my settings in iDVD are 'ok' as I've never had a problem burning before....although I find it strange how long it always takes. Is 1hr+ for a 6GB project to burn normal? and is 4.5hrs normal for this project (20GB) on a dual-layer disc?
so, all that being said, I'd still like to fit my whole project one one single layer DVD because I tried another double layer and had the same fate (even on the computer it just doesn't seem to be working correctly...it may be the memorex dvds which i've read are ****). any more insight would be great.
I appreciate all that you've done and your continuing help.

  • Which Dual Layer DVD Burner can I use?

I have DVD Studio 1.5.1 and no plans to move to a more recent version. I would like to make dual layer DVDs by purchasing a burner that supports dual layer burning.
What dual layer burners will be recognized and supported by DVD Studio v1.5.1 and Mac OS 9.2.2? I'm using a Powerbook G4 slot loading 800MHZ 15" titanium computer. I am willing to use either an external or internal device.

  • What type of DVD should I use for Windows Backup?

I am wanting to do my Windows Backup and I was wondering what type of DVD media I should use. Is it better to use a RW or only R type DVD.
    I have an HP Omni 220-1180qd, A5W89AV#ABA, running Win7 64 bit.
I thought I read it can use CD's, DVD's but I want to know which would be the better choice.

Honestly, an external hard drive would be a better choice. The difference between +R and +R/W is that +R is "Recordable" and +R/W is "Re-Writable". If you intend on making periodic backups, go with an extrernal hard drive... If you intend on making very few backups, consider the DVD+R discs.

how do I Rip DVD's onto my computer. what software should I use...what the best that you use?

  • I want to produce wedding dvds.whats the best software to use...final cut x I'm thinking but what about the quality of the dvd?

i want to produce wedding dvds.whats the best software to use...final cut x I'm thinking but what about the quality of the dvd? Can i use idvd?

The only Programms I worked with are DVD Studio Pro and iDVD. You can burn a Video-DVD with Toast but  there is no real option to design your Menu. Just a few themes as far as I discovered.
Do you have a Blue Ray Device to burn* the HD-DVD? Are the Bride and Groom able to watch the Blue Ray?
    * which is only possible with DVD Studio Pro and not iMovie as far as I know.
    This might help
For better quality I would go the Compressor & DVD Studio Pro workflow I just learned.
Export the Movie as is from Final Cut Pro and then use Compressor to encode the File.
Consider delivering the Movie in a different way like a private video on vimeo, a Website or on an SD card which is not really romantic...

  • What type dvd to use for recovery?

it really depends on your laptop. some will work with +r and some with -r. you will need anywhere between 2 and 6 dvds. you should be fine with anything other than memorex.

  • Using Dual Layer DVD with iDVD

I have a 2 hour movie that I have imported into iDVD. I put in a dual layer DVD-R, but iDVD insists that my two hour movie can fit on a single layer DVD-R. Yes, I'm sure it can crunch the heck out of it, but I want the quality to be high--THAT is why I BOUGHT a dual layer support drive!
Is there any way I can tell iDVD to not crunch it down to 4.5 Gigs, but to just 9 Gigs?

Hey, you used the word "experiment" twice in the same forum which gets you twenty points but you lose 10 points since it was for the same experiment.
I get twenty (40-20) just for writing this response. Points are redeemable at the nearest refrigerator for hoppy beverages providing that you speak nicely to the member of the household that stocks said items, (or you can play back audio of yourself speaking compliments, but it must be recorded in 16 bit audio, as 12 bit audio will only buy you grief).

I just purchased a new iMac from Apple, and would like to know which Dual layer DVD discs work best. Does Apple sell their own DL discs?

I highly recommend DVD+R DL discs by TDK. I use TDK almost exclusively for all my disc burning needs (the other brand I recommend for CD's is Philips, but they are hard to find).

  • What fcp export settings to use for bluray DVD

I am editing a huge wedding and have to put chapters and full wedding onto a bluray dvd.  What export settings could I use to compress videos a bit so they fit on a bluray without losing a lot of quality?

You have to export to QuickTime Movie, not QuickTime Conversion.   You don't want to force any recompression on the video; it will only cause problemsin Toast.
If you want to save time & disk space, UNcheck the option called 'Make movie self-contained' when you export to QT Movie.   As long as your Blu-ray authoring tool (eg Toast) is on the same Mac as FCE, you can use the QT reference movie produced this way as input to your Blu-ray authoring app, same as you would a self-contained QT movie.
It is important, however, that you make sure to do Sequence > Render All > Both and Sequence > Render Only > Mixdown before exporting your video from FCE.
