What Max burn speed for DVD or DVD-DL?

How can I find out what recording speed DVD, DVD-DL or even plain CD's should I buy for my Macbook? .. Mid 2007 model, 2G's ram, Super-Drive.
I just don't want to go get 8x speed if the system is not going to be able to take advantage of it.

Can I swap out my Combo drive for a Super drive?

I have 1GHz G4 iMac Dual USB & was wondering if I could replace the Combo Drive with a "Super" Drive.

You can do it, but do you really want to? I think an external is a better option. Having two DVD drives is a huge advantage. It makes copying DVDs a snap.

Practical Use For 2 Super Drives?

My apologies if this sounds silly but is there any real practical use for the 2 Super Drives I have? I think I may have been a bit naive thinking that I would somehow be able to burn multiple CDs at once from iTunes or burn multiple DVDs at once from iMovie or iDVD. Can someone provide an example of how I would be able to use the two drives or what the intent was of offering two drives?

Thanks Forrest. Sorry for not replying sooner but I've been away for the holidays. By "running two instances of the app and making a duplicate" are you referring to, for instance, creating a copy of iDVD or iMovie and renaming it to something else? Is that even possible? Perhaps it would be best if I described a scenario and ask if it is possible to do this.
I create an iMovie project and share to iDVD. Suppose I want burn a large number of DVDs. Is there a way to do this using both trays from iDVD? I do a lot of this, usually converting a lot of home movies for people and putting them on DVD. When they want multiple copies, it's a matter of waiting for one DVD to finish burning before loading another because I can't see a way to burn the same project via the two different superdrives that came with the Mac Pro.

What are best practices for back up drives when they become full?

I've got an external hard drive that is now full. What do I do? Delete the oldest files on it, right? If so, do I delete the full backup and ALL the incremental backups since then? Do I have to do this manually now; isn't there a way to automate this?

The "usual" procedure is to move the oldest incremental backups from the hard drive to permanent storage media such as DVD.
However, if your backup drive is the same size as your main drive, then you could do incremental backups that delete files on the backup druve that have been deleted from the source drive. This prevents the drive from filling up with old and out of date files. However, if you need to maintain archives of even the incremental backups, then move the oldest to permanent storage media and delete them from the backup drive to free space.

What is actual speed for wrt54gl home networking ?

i am transferring large files from my main pc (wired) to my htpc (wireless) and transfer speed is around 6-7Mbps. is this the normal speed for the wrt54gl router? it seems a far cry from the advertised 54Mbps. i understand that i'll never achieve 54Mbps, but perhaps 20-30Mbps? router is set to G only, and on channel 6.
anything i can do to increase transfer rate?

DVD writing speed for home DVD player

I was just wondering what is the best speed to burn movies for a home DVD player (2x, 8x or 16x). I have heard that you can have problems with a DVD player reading the disk if you burn at too high of a speed. I have 3 DVD players at home with the oldest being 2 years old.

I don't know about "best" speed. I do know that slower is better, your chances for a compatibility issue increase with the speed you burn. I've had good luck with 8x burns. Any higher than that has been iffy for me.

What type of interface for replacement optical drive?

I have a white, NOT unibody Macbook, model MacBook5,2.
The optical drive is broken, and it's out of warranty.
Happily, I'm not squeamish about swapping it out myself. However, I'm finding conflicting info online about what kind of drive I actually need. I would just do a like-for-like replacement, but the Matshita UJ-867A comes in PATA and SATA flavors. System Profiler says the drive is connected to the SATA bus, but discussions of the older Macbooks (MacBook1-4,1) are unambiguous about the drive being PATA.
Moreover, several parts retailers list a SATA->PATA converter as an optical drive accessory.
So before I rip the sucker open to see what kind of optical drive I need, can anybody with some Apple Repair experience tell me for sure?

DVD menu speeding for no reason?!

Hi, I have a dvd project going in DVD studio and I have a 30 second menu I designed in Motion, all is fine but when I apply my custom made 30 second music aiff I exported from Soundtrack Pro to the menu it speeds up the menu to 4 seconds, the music stops after 4 seconds to and repeats, it looks stupid!
Why is this, it only happens when I apply the music aiff to the menu.

Adobe has a link that is supposed to take you to a list of compatable dvd burners for Encore 2.0. When you download/view the PDF file, it states that the list is for Encore 1.5 (not 2.0). Is there really a list of compatable 2.0 dvd burners????

Not seen one, but I have always found that my Pioneer burners have been very reliable.

The matter of obtaining a retail or replacement install DVD for Leopard 10.5
can be elusive; some say they'd been able to call AppleCare or Sales Support
US (two different 800 numbers, in Apple site) and for a fee of about $17, get
a white label full install DVD for Leopard 10.5; also said to be available, was
a white label DVD for Tiger 10.4. {These may or may not still be available;
the kicker here, was some who called over the past year did get them, others
who called later did not. Then even later on, others were able to get them.}
This topic has come up a few times in ASC discussions, even early this year
with posts in these threads with contact phone numbers to try & order discs.
And at this moment, I do not have those numbers available to include here;
nor do I know if I did, if the persons who may answer would be able to answer
the question of availability themselves. Appears the answer has changed
depending on who you are able to talk to, there at Apple.
Since those of us who answer these discussions do not know policy nor do
we represent Apple corporate, the results of any finding can be hit & miss.
About browsers. Some exist that are custom builds for PowerPC Mac and
there are some limits due to the nature of the volunteer efforts behind them.
Of them, note of these some only work in OS X 10.5.8; a few offer an older
OS 9 version (see icab site for a classic pre-X version.)

For my PPC G4 Macs, which run 10.5.8, I have these three browsers, and
also the Safari browser of the vintage; you can use Safari to set a different
browser as 'default' to the system, so a general browser launch triggers a
different browser than Safari, another one will take its place. I also have
an older Opera browser 10.63 that works, but is not supported w/ updates.
So regarding the purchase of retail label (not grey from a machine series)
DVD for a full install Mac OS X Leopard 10.5, an answer may exist, but
I do not have the details; nor do I know of some are workable answers.
And the discs said to be offered were either vintage replacements so a
caller would need a serial number, to match; or were white label installer
versions for a wider range of machines, not just one built model. So there
is some matter of what they are, and if what you want may really exist!
Some persons had looked into amazon or other possible sources, but if
a seller misrepresents their product, you can't really use what won't work.
You may be able to get old stock unused retail Leopard DVDs, ? online.
{Oh, if you have some favorite classic applications from OS 9.2.2 & before
you should consider a clone of Tiger 10.4.11 system with Classic, so you
can later boot the computer from there, in order to run those old applications.
Leopard does not support Classic in OS X. A backup hard disk drive with
its own power supply, and with oxford-type chipset, can be used for clones.}
Anyway, I thought to add the browser list; and a few add-ons from FireFox
will work with TenFourFox. I use one that makes the first open browser
window not have a tab. TenFourFox 17 had no tabs by default, now v.24
has tabs. I prefer separate windows so I can drag-drop between them and
do multiple searches or have other topics open at once. Or run two browsers.
