What effect is used to provide this relief look on a lapel pin proof?

I am working on sending a proof to someone for a project and have my file in vector for manufacturing.  I also have it in jpeg format and would like to be able to create an effect like this one shows.  Can anyone point me in the right direction?  It seems the gold outline looks raised and the colors of the pin are sunken in to provide a 3-D effect.
I am also curious how to "mirror" the image and fill with a solid color to create the backside markings.  I have done this in the past in Corel but am somewhat new to PS.
The image below is the image I am working with where the black would be raised and the red, white, blue would have the "sunken" appearance

With the image all rasterized in pixels, you'll have to do it a bit differently than if you had it in vector shapes in several layers.
Just one possible way to get there from here:
Increase the canvas size to include empty space all around.
Select then mask or delete the white surround.
Duplicate the graphic as a second layer, run Filter - Stylize - Emboss, then set that layer to Overlay.
Add a Drop Shadow Layer Style to the original layer.
Test it on several different backgrounds.
Here's the PSD file if you'd like to look at the individual layers:

  • Wonder what effects were used to make this?

I'm making a version of this with a different logo.  Anyway, it *seems* like an emboss, but it isn't one I've encountered before.  Doesn't seem like any of the out-the-box emboss emboss options to me.  The gradient isn't a problem....except in regards to the emboss.  It has a very sexy, chiseled, sharp look to it that it pretty hard to recreate using homemade gradients and built-in emboss features (that I know of).  Any thoughts?  Thanks, buds.

It seems like there's a lot going on here.  There's that chiseled, metallic emboss that is most clear on the "O".  But there also seems to be a 3D effect maybe (although it could be a copy of the logo an a separate layer I suppose).  The emboss around the type is strange to me in how it is viewable at every angle.  As mentioned, I figured out the gradient pattern for the face of the logo (pretty simple to do with the brush tool) but that galdern emboss just blows my mind.  It looks like it was made with either a modified stroke, a copy of the logo an another layer, a 3D effect, the basic hard emboss or all of the above.  It's really well done to the point that it just looks abstract to me in terms of technique.  And even the emboss has what appears to be some kind of gradient applied.  I'm too much of a photoshop simpleton at this stage to figure it all out though.
This is as far as I managed to get:
As you can see, it lacks that crisp look.  Hmmm....

Under the Effects-Lumetri Looks-Desaturation choose a B and W effect. Then add the luma corrector from the Video effects-colour correction section. Adjust the brightness and contrast to get the effect you want.

  • What program was used to make this video?  Is it After Effects?

I thought that this clip was funny: http://www.clipaday.com/videos/mccain-drums.
I want to make something similar for my brother, but I have no idea which program was used to make this.
I have the full Adobe CS3 Suite on my computer, including After Effects. I use Photoshop, InDesign, and Illustrator regularly for my job.
I want to try to monkey around with the video software at an amateur level. But before I buy any tutorials, I need to know what program to buy the tutorial for!!
    Thanks for any responses.

While the clip may not necessarily have been done in AE, you can achieve
these results. Careful masking along with good keyframing of the
movement properties will do it. There are other ways, but while this
might not be the fastest, would be the simplest and would provide a good
learning experience for someone starting out.

  • What effects were used in Desperate Housewives Season 7 Promo?

Students want to promote something on campus and want to use similar effects as used in the Desperate Housewives Season 7 Promo (see on YouTube here -->  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YGt0KEAKBPk )
What was used to get the great coloring - very bright/sauturated?  Was iT saturation of certain colors only?
    The very orange horizon/sunset effect?
The clothes 'falling' of the actress while she is walking, changing into other clothes
Clothes falling of her when she is getting out of the car
This is really a great promo and as a novice After Effects user, I would love to know how these were created (what effects/plugins/etc).
    Thanks in advance!
    Regards
    Danie

Way over your head, if you are just a beginner...
What was used to get the great coloring - very bright/sauturated?  Was iT saturation of certain colors only?
    The very orange horizon/sunset effect?
    Elaborate color correction.
The clothes 'falling' of the actress while she is walking, changing into other clothes
Clothes falling of her when she is getting out of the car
Green screen shooting, 3D matchmoving, 3D animation, corrective warping, morphing and masking.
All of these are advanced techniques which you won't be able to pull of on your own, even if you had worked with AE for years already. This requires a qualified team and a lot of planning and involves much more than just throwing on a few effects on possibly poorly shot footage...

  • I can no longer download and save files. They are now saved with a ".part" suffix that I can not use or open. What happened, I used to do this all the time?

Downloads seem to be happening normally at first but the file shows up with a file extension of ".part" that I can not use or open. If I refresh the folder where it was downloaded to, it disappears as though it wasn't there at all.
I used to do this and it just yesterday started to give me problems. It doesn't seem to matter what file type I do this with as PDF, MP3 and EXE files have all shown this problem.
    Please help!

It is possible that your anti-virus software is corrupting the downloaded files or otherwise interfering with downloading files by Firefox.<br />
Try to disable the real-time (live) scanning of files in your anti-virus software temporarily to see if that makes downloading work.

  • [ShareIt] Can ShareIt support internet sharing? It's very useful if provide this function.

My work computer is always connecting the company's local area network through cable, sometimes when i found a defect on my test machine, save the screenshot and logs then try to open the defect on my work computer, i'd like
to transfer the screenshots and logs to my work computer, but the test machine can't connect to company's local area network(because company's policy), but both test machine and work computer connect to the internet. so the two machines can't find the other, if ShareIt can provide this function, it's good for user.

Very good suggestions. Will bring it back to the development team.

  • What program filters/effects was used to create this?

    Hi guys,
I'm only pretty new to After Effects nad motiona graphics (I can do some pretty nice stuff in flash, thats as far as animating motion graphics goes at the moment) , just wondering what would have been used in the creating of the motion graphic on the logo at the start of this video
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hy-H98C57Z0
The nice shimmer effects etc. I guess slowing it down I can see how each image (state of the logo) could be made in photoshop and then some fancy masking going on to reveal the logo. (I guess I could do that manually frame by frame with a bit of difficulty)
I see a lot of this sort of thing in video, just be interested to find out more, if there are certain filters/specific programs that do this sort of things etc.
    Any help would be great

If you're talking about the glow's and flairs on the logo:
those could be duplicated without plug-ins by layering solids and copies of the logo in a 32bit project. The trick is the 32 bit project, the blend modes, and the blurs.
You could suplement with Knoll Light factory.
Here's a comp that I made in about 5 minutes that will give you the basics. I tied opacity of the blured layers to a slider added to the adjustment layer for exposure. It's always good to start with some basics.

  • What technique is used to achieve this type of graphic?

This looks to be some type of mesh and warping, but the lighting might indicate a specialized landscape program. Anyone know how this art was produced?
    TIA,
    Ken

You can almost do this with the 3D Effect>Bevel and Extrude and mapping a symbol of the dots them making a clipping msk
Oh wait I then used an Envelope Distort make with mesh and then you can manipulate the clipped mapped effect.
You might even do this with a blend
this is blending with gradients and clipping mask
This is a long way from what you want but you can see it might be had as you think it might in Illustrator.

  • Does anyone know what software is used for creating this?

I have seen this effect on a few television adverts and wondered how I would go about creating it.
In this click the ball is kicked and as it gets to the screen it "breaks" into pieces and the ball comes out of the screen - I know this isnt the same ball as seen in the clip and it had been recreated in probably a 3d package such as cinema 4d but how do I get the breaking into pieces like that -
    http://img226.imageshack.us/my.php?image=picture1ij2.png
In this clip the person just starts breaking into pieces -
    http://img227.imageshack.us/my.php?image=picture2gc2.png
I guess they are both done using the same software and effect and all I really want to know is the software and effect used. Any additional help would be appreciated but I would like to try and work out the rest for myself - I'm halfway along a learning curve!
PS - Both stills are taken from the OneSize Showreel.

Well, After Effects has a shattering effect, but I'd guess it was a 3D app that created those effects. To see what you can do with Motion, check out this thread:

  • An Idea of What Techniques Were Used in Editing This Music Video?

    hi forum,
im a music producer from japan, who has recently gotten into video editing/production.
i just wanted to ask if anyone could shed some light on the techniques that were used in editing the following video:
i know the song is horrible, but i love the animation, which i assume is a combination of photoshop and after effects?
does anyone have a basic idea of what is being done?  im not looking for specific tutorials, just some insight on what direction i should head in if i want to create something similiar.
anyway, thanks for reading, looking forward to any replies!

Lots of vector art and lots of 3D tracking to get things to line up and look like they are part of the scene. You can do the same thing with Mocha and corner pin tracking but it's much easier with a real 3d tracker like Camera Tracker or SynthEyes

  • What tools were used to make this cartoon picture?

I want to make a picture like these ones, but i dont know which tools to use. it seems they didnt use the pen tool at all, and i cant quite figure out how they did all the shadows and highlights. its seems they used the brush, but when i use the brush tool, i dont get the same clean results. any advice? any good tutorials that could help?
    Thanks in advance

Adobe Illustrator is probably the best tool to do something like this.  It's made by drawing a lot of shapes on a lot of layers.  You can do this with the pen/brush tool in Flash, but they really aren't the best for drawing.  Check out tv.adobe.com for some videos on Illustrator.
