What Exactly are the Benefits of More GPU RAM for PP, AE, PS ?

What benefit is there to having, say 4gb GPU RAM over 2gb ?
I have read numerous conflicting, and perhaps misguided, claims regarding when/why one would rather have a graphics card with more than 2gb RAM.
Does this impact effects render, multiple monitor resolution, CUDA, Mercury Playback Engine performance, other areas, etc. and how?
Thanks for your response.
A Ajar

2GB of video ram is more than enough for the Hardware MPE engine and 1080 media with effects. Essentially the greater the ram space on the video card the greater ram caching available for the Cuda acceleration to buffer data ready for GPU processing. The Application memory management ie caching profiles though effect this based on each codec and resolution ie data per frame. However along with this you have to have enough system ram to create the buffers used to cache the data down to the GPU ram since that data shadows down for GPU processing and then back again for final encoding. This means that not configuring enough system ram will limit the amount of GPU ram used. Hence why you want atleast 16GB of ram for HD and the hardware MPE engine. 3GB+ ram spaces on video cards are for 2K to 4K + frame sizes ie R3D and Raw/CinemaDng. This is because the data per frame multiplies significantly when at 4K resolution. This require far greater ram space which is why you look for the 3GB+ ram space cards for those workflows. The Effect data will also increase because there is far mroe resolution data to alter. This is on top of the drawing out data which is what you see on the screen. That is when the differences for the cards show.

  • What exactly are the cron scripts doing?

    Hi,
Hope the subject says it all: I have searched but not found a detailed explanation as what the cron scripts (daily, weekly, monthly) actually do, and if the utilities (Onyx, Cocktail, Xupport, etc) are doing exactly the same.
Can someone point to a site or explain?
    TIA
    Dan

    Hi Dan,
    (in addition to Barry's reply)
    Yes,
    1) running the Daily, the Weekly and the Monthly tasks manually with an utility, or
    2) running them yourself with the
    sudo periodic daily
    sudo periodic weekly
    sudo periodic monthly
    Terminal commands
(or this one: sudo periodic daily weekly monthly), or
    3) leaving your computer running 24/7/365 so that they run automatically,
all three ways do exactly the same thing.
--> To see what they do exactly, the best way is to open Console, and in the /var/log section, look for "daily.out", "weekly.out" and "monthly.out".
What exactly are the "cron scripts" doing?
    (Periodic tasks)
In Console, you'll find a lot of different files that grow with more and more information every minute, even every second for some of them.
The three Periodic tasks regularly rearrange them and compresses them so that they don't take too much disk space.
They also rebuild some system database so that the data never gets unusable by the system.

  • What exactly are the updates good for on an ipod

I ask because mine is windows format, and im having trouble transferring all the metadata off my ipod with senuti to a back up so that i can reformat the ipod to mac and then sync in my senuti backed up library. I was wondering if anyone knows what exactly are the updates that you get. my ipod is 1.2 5thgen.
If i were to have the latest update would i be able to see album cover art view when the ipod is plugged into itunes? I noticed that i can see that view in library mode but not in ipod mode. (my pod isnt synced)...
so what are these updates good for?

    hey thanks for your reply.
I do have it set to manual and i can see the art on the ipod by itself, but even with manual transfer itunes wont let me view the artwork modes unless i am playing off my computers library (which doesn't have the songs on my ipod on it). I called apple earlier today and some tech support guy claimed that itunes does not support this feature. Is this correct? can anyone out there see artwork modes on an unsynced ipod through itunes?

  • What exactly ARE the .pkg files that collect in the 'Receipts' folder?

    Hi there all.
Those .pkg files that collect in HDD>Library>Receipts. What exactly ARE these packages for? How do they tie in with Disk Utility's 'Repair permissions' option? Why do we need to keep them?
It's all Unix to me ;0)

I used to delete .pkg files after I'd installed an application. I thought i was just the electronic equivalent of throwing away the empty box after I'd bought something.
The "cardboard box" icon encouraged me to think that.
Then someone said you should never throw away those.pkg files.
    So I stopped.
But the only thing that has ever happened is that during permissions repair, I get a few lines here and there that say "could not repair permissions".
I have experienced no other problems of any kind over about the last 2 years. All applications running normally, nothing weird happening.

  • What exactly are the "Share to YouTube" Settings?

    Hi-
I'm just curious as to what the settings are in FCS 3 (or QT X) for Sharing to YouTube. What I mean by this is, what are the equivalent Compressor or QuickTime Export settings that this feature uses?
In QT 7, I would normally export as an H.264 wrapped MPEG-4 file using a 2500 data rate so that my videos would appear on YouTube as HD, and in relatively great quality without a large overall file size.
Other suggestions always had me converting to a QT mov file (H.264) with 2500 data rate.
I want to know what is the best and easiest way to get to YouTube so that I can inform others of the proper steps to take. The Share to YouTube function would be easiest now, but am still curious about the settings that it uses.
In a related note, the Share to YouTube feature is not letting me use the 3-D tags (yt3d:enable=true yt3d:aspect=16:9) because it contains tags that are not letters or numbers. Is there a way around this?

Great, thanks David. So whenever I see an export template setting out of something, it's pretty much the same setting as in Compressor? Like when I do an "Export to Web" from QT 7 and choose the iPhone preset, that is the setting that they have in Compressor?
Also, any idea about the "TAG" problem in FCP?

  • What exactly is the "Version Name" to be used for?

    Hi -
I just picked up Aperture and have been trying to figure it out. And to be honest, I'm pretty darn OCD about photo organization - which is one reason Aperture appealed to me more than iPhoto, which I've been using forever.
So I've literally been going around tagging all 4000 photos I've imported, but I'm wondering what the "Version Name" is supposed to be for. I've been told this is very important for when you create new versions from the master, that they should all be different. However the majority of my photos are just old high school photos and whatnot that I could care less about touching up ever.
So then what exactly should I do with the "Version Name"? Is this supposed to be a specific name (such as, "dan at the beach, edited", etc) or should I just called them something like "original" or "master"? Does this affect the actual filename? What is the general usage of this?

it's basically the name of the photo. it's the name/title that will appear in your albums, books, etc. if you have more than one version of a photo, you might use different names to distinguish them; eg, adding 'B&W' for black and white versions, etc.
many people; myself include; use 'caption' for descriptions.

  • What is/are the best Remote Access/VPN services for my Mac system?

    2009 Macbook Pro
    2009 Macbook
    2010 iMac
    2 iPad 2s
    2 iPhone 4s
    Computers on Snow Leopard
    iOS 5
    Everything is updated
    I want :
    1.  to have everything working together, with remote access from anywhere on the internet, file sharing, streaming & transfer.
    2.  the security of a VPN connection.
I will soon update my existing router w/an Airport Extreme.  What VPN/Remote Access client(s) should I get? Is there one solution for both jobs, or do I need to get more than one service?  I have looked at LogMeIn, Witopia.  Thanks for the help.

I've been down this road and settled on a much simpler solution...
VPNs are ok... but the performance is bad, they send TCP packets inside TCP packets... which is a bad thing, some connections completely break down. security is o-k, but openVPN is much better yet more complicated to set up. Also you have to go through all the mess of setting up the server.
I tried using VPNs for a while, and then instead settled with tunneling specific connections over ssh... it is more secure and elegant, there is no server setup, however it is not seemless.. you have to set up the connections/ports individually each time, this can get messy if you want access to lots of things at once.
I eventually came accross sshuttle, and this is what i have stuck with because it's just bloody great... it's like a VPN but uses SSH. So you don't have to set up a VPN server... you just need access to an ssh server (i.e your home mac with "remote login" (ssh) enabled, and your router to foward ssh requests to that machine).
not only do you not have to mess around with server configs, but it also give far better performance, stability, and the security of ssh (i.e whichever cypher you want). This is because unlike VPN, sshuttle pulls the TCP packets apart before sending them over SSH (which is allready using TCP) and then re-assembles them the other side with python. the result is comparably better performance and stability than VPN protocols.
you can route individual IPs from the servers subnet, or tell it to automatically find and merge all host names / IPs it can find with your current subnet.
    Theory of Operation
sshuttle is not exactly a VPN, and not exactly port forwarding. It's kind of both, and kind of neither.
It's like a VPN, since it can forward every port on an entire network, not just ports you specify. Conveniently, it lets you use the "real" IP addresses of each host rather than faking port numbers on localhost.
On the other hand, the way it works is more like ssh port forwarding than a VPN. Normally, a VPN forwards your data one packet at a time, and doesn't care about individual connections; ie. it's "stateless" with respect to the traffic. sshuttle is the opposite of stateless; it tracks every single connection.
You could compare sshuttle to something like the old Slirp program, which was a userspace TCP/IP implementation that did something similar. But it operated on a packet-by-packet basis on the client side, reassembling the packets on the server side. That worked okay back in the "real live serial port" days, because serial ports had predictable latency and buffering.
But you can't safely just forward TCP packets over a TCP session (like ssh), because TCP's performance depends fundamentally on packet loss; it must experience packet loss in order to know when to slow down! At the same time, the outer TCP session (ssh, in this case) is a reliable transport, which means that what you forward through the tunnel never experiences packet loss. The ssh session itself experiences packet loss, of course, but TCP fixes it up and ssh (and thus you) never know the difference. But neither does your inner TCP session, and extremely screwy performance ensues.
sshuttle assembles the TCP stream locally, multiplexes it statefully over an ssh session, and disassembles it back into packets at the other end. So it never ends up doing TCP-over-TCP. It's just data-over-TCP, which is safe.
Anyway, you can find it on github here https://github.com/apenwarr/sshuttle
if you uncomfortable using the command line, someone has also bundled it into an app here: https://github.com/apenwarr/sshuttle/commits/dist/macos
IMPORTANT, the latest version invokes a bug in one of apple's drivers after a while which causes a kernel panic, (this isn't the same as the bug where you have to reset your network interface like it says in the readme, this WILL cause a kernel panic) stick with version 0.53 untill ether Apple fixes the bug, or sshuttle stops antagonising it. 0.53 works perfectly at the moment. you can ether install git and clone the specific version or download the 0.53 app here instead:
    http://mac.softpedia.com/progDownload/sshuttle-Download-97917.html
alternatively, if your loging in from linux there aren't any problems with 0.60 because the system would have different dirvers of course.
One last note... you said you wanted everything to work together, one thing that will not work over VPNs, SSH, and sshuttle is bojour... this is significant because things like AFP shares wont pop up automatically, you will have to specify them ... i.e command+k in finder and type AFP://192.168.0.x or VNC://192.168.0.x etc this is because none of these options support multicasting which bonjour requires. This isn't such a big deal so long as you know what services are available on your machine and how to manually connect to them (like i said above)

  • What EXACTLY are the 4 NVIDIA High Definition Audio devices on N570GTX - Win 8.1

    Hi guys,
one of my rigs runs an N570GTX on Win 8.1 64bit.
In Device Manager > Sound, Video and Game Controllers, there are 4 "NVIDIA High Definition Audio" listed.
I use 337.88 drivers (NVIDIA Control Panel version 7.7.760.0).
What is the purpose of EACH of these 4 devices:
As a side note, my other rig running an N660GTX on Win 7 64bit only shows 1 "NVIDIA High Definition Audio" in Device Manager > Sound, Video and Game Controllers.

Okay, by examining the devices (enabling, disabling, reading driver data), I can conclusively state that one of the drivers (in my case residing in Location 1) is exclusively tied to the HDMI port on my GPU –  when I disable it, my HDMI device (I have only one; shame, because I can't isolate the devices better) stops being listed in Windows Sound Control Panel; when I disable all other devices except that one, my audio over HDMI works fine – this leads me to believe that the other ones are not really essential codecs required for HDMI audio, but are instead related to the individual audio outputs.
In summary, assuming the other two devices (residing, for example, in Location 0 and Location 2) are for audio output on DVI ports (usable via DVI->HDMI adapter/cable), there's still one NVIDIA High Definition Audio device (residing in, say, Location 3), which doesn't seem to be in use in relation to some sort of global codec mechanism (since I can disable it without affecting my HDMI port audio output), that is unaccounted for!
Any idea what other output can the remaining device be linked to, since GTX570 has no S/PDIF pass-through connector on the board itself (to connect it to the motherboard's S/PDIF output)?
Could the remaining device be there only as a legacy stub for S/PDIF connector which was present on the pre GeForce 400 Series cards, since they share the same NVIDIA drivers with the post-Tesla series?
But in that case, why does my GTX660 list only one NVIDIA High Definition Audio device in Win 7 64bit?
Quote from: Nichrome on 02-July-14, 19:33:05
Apart from the sound you can get through HDMI (which would be 1 or 2 of these in management), it provides your board with some "HD Sound Drivers" which takes another 1 or 2 of these.
I have quite few of these too even on my old laptop (with Nvidia card): x4 Nvidia High Definition Audio, x1 Cyberlink WebCam, x1 Realtek HD and x1 Bluetooth sound.
Your specs read that you have a GTX770 running on Win 7 64bit; do you also have four of the Nvidia High Definition Audio devices? Or just one? Thanks!

  • What exactly are the duplicate SD channels? So I can remove them

I suffer from the same massive PROGRAM GUIDE pain as everyone else with FIOS.  Can anyone post a link to a list which actually shows the SD duplicates with their channel numbers so I can edit them out?  I realize Verizon isn't going to provide an easy way to do this like DirecTV, and I am fully capable of editing my program guide, but it would go a lot easier if I just had a list of all those channels in front of me while I edit the guide.  It's just too **bleep** tiring to figure it by myself.

I doubt that anyone can post a list, the content would almost certainly depend on where you are located.
If you really don't know which channels are duplicated between SD and HD, if you will manage your Favorites list(s) on the STBs themselves, it is easy to tell: go to any SD channel you receive, if you see the message at the bottom "Press C to watch in HD" then you know right away that channel is duplicated in HD. At that point you can press the Options button on the remote, scroll down to Favorites, right click, and select the Favorites list to remove the channel from. The problem with this process is that it is long and slow, you do it one channel at a time. But conversely, the positive is that, at any time, it is easy to add or remove any channel from either Favorites list if you make a mistake or change your mind.
If you want to mange your Favorites list on the web, you can only do that for DVRs. You can easily add or remove an individual channel by viewing the schedule and mousing over the channel number/icon and making your choice, but I am not aware of any way to tell directly from that listing which channels are duplicated between SD and HD.
Maybe someone else will have some other suggestions, but I don't know of any way to directly get what you have asked for.
