What exactly is a "place"?

Pretty much each picture I take is in a different location. If I'm walking around a city I'm visiting, I might snap a picture here, another there, etc. When I'm editing locations in iPhoto, is every single street corner supposed to be a different "place" with a different name? What is the meaning of the size of the circle around the pin when I'm locating a picture in "places"?
Thanks,
Mike

You can do a Larry does and use a device that will embed the lat and long coordinates in the photos that you take (or use a camera with GPS capability). Another use of that is to just enter the city in the Location field and you will get a dropdown menu with many of the world's cities already entered. Enter the first letter of the city and you'll get get a list of cities that start with that letter. As you continue typing the list changes accordingly as seen here:
In this case it's pretty general but you can identify the city a photo was taken in and that may be enough.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier versions) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. There are versions that are compatible with iPhoto 5, 6, 7 and 8 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
NOTE: iPhoto 8's new option in it's rebuild library window, "Rebuild the iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup" may make this tip obsolete. We'll know when users have occasion to use it and see if that's the case.

What, exactly, are 'encoded assets'? Why does removing them resolve problems? How can they be avoided in the first place?

As I understand it, encoding fomats your digital video clips and photos (assets) into Standard DVD mp2 format so that it can be burned to a DVD.  If there has been an error in the encoding process, then you remove the old encoded assets and start over.  There are numberous reasons why there can be errors in the encoding process.

  • This is for Exchange 2007 but can't find a place to post it. It may apply here I don't know. What exactly happens when you suspend LCR?

OK. I searched out here and found things close to what I need: how to suspend and restore LCR but I need another answer. I have gotten a new backup solution (Unitrends) and the Microsoft exchange write appears twice. I'm guessing one is for my first storage
group and one is for LCR. Anyway it appears the software is trying to use the replication writer which is causing my backups to fail. Here is my question: what EXACTLY happens when I suspend the LCR (Suspend Storage Group Copy)? Does this affect regular exchange/email
transport and receiving at all? Basically if I disable it will mail continue to flow as normal with no adverse affects? And what EXACTLY happens when I disable LCR. What if I decide I don't need it. Will disabling it affect normal email operations? Basically
will either of these options in ANY way interfere with normal mail flow? Thanks.

    Hi,
Based on my knowledge, suspending LCR doesn't affect the mail flow. If there is no need for LCR, you can disable LCR, and then please manually delete the LCR storage group and databaase fles.
For more information about LCR, please refer to
    Local Continuous Replication.

  • What exactly is the purpose of Synchronization Frequency?

After I read "What is Synchronization Frequency " here:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb809047.aspx, and "What is a recovery point" here:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb809164.aspx, I still have some doubts in what exactly  Synchronization Frequency's purpose is, if it can't be used to recover
data.  Let me ask my question by using the following example.
Say in a file protection group I setup 3 recovery points in a day, at 9AM, 12PM, and 3PM.  And I setup my Synchronization Frequency as "every 1 hour".  Below is what happens at each hour, in the morning:
    8AM: synchronization
    9AM: *recovery point
    10AM: synchronization
    11AM: synchronization
    12PM: *recovery point
    So my questions are:
Q1. What are the synchronizations taken place at 10AM and 11AM for?  Are they simply making the recovery point creation at 12PM to complete quicker, becuase DPM server only need to sync changes in an hour (between 11
and 12), instead of in 3 hours (between 9 and 12, if no synchronization was configured between each recovery point) ?
Q2. I read from the article that at each synchronization, changes are transferred to DPM server and then
applied to the replica.  However, it did not create a recovery point.
So, what would be the difference difference if I chose 15 minutes or
Just before a recovery point, as my Synchronization Frequency interval?   I mean by doing sync's more frequently, I am still getting only 3 recovery points in a day.  Then why do I want to sync it more frequently?
If my server crashed at 9:50, but the synchronization took place at 9:45
is not a recovery point and can't be used to recover data, why would I want to sync it every 15 minutes?

    Hi,
So i'll post my answer for your 2 questions.
A1. The point of having synchronization every hour instead of before a recovery point is to spread the transfer during the day so that the data transferred at the time of the RP is smaller and then quicker. You had that point right.
A2. A Synchronization doesn't create a RP but just in case you can create one if needed.
    Let's say,the RP are created a 7AM, 12PM and 3PM.
The synchronization occurs at 9.45 and the server crashes at 9.55. At first you will only have the last RP to recover (the 7AM one). But in the console you can create a recovery point without synchronizing based on the replica you have on the server (which
is updated each time there is a sync happening).
Then you'll have only your synchronization interval to be loss at max.

  • What exactly is a signature

What exactly is a signature? I know how to use it, but I am interested in more detail.
Is it a separate entity from the email body? Is it just pasted into the body?
Why are there problems sometimes, such as in an older version of mail, if there was a picture attached, it had to be in a certain location in the email or else there was a problem. (I don't remember that exactly anymore). Is there still a problem with signatures and mail?
Does the placement of the signature set mail up for problems? (e.g., at the end of the quoted text or above it)

  • Sync - merge - what EXACTLY do these terms mean?

Howdy. I recently plunged into the iPhone world & I'm LOVING IT!!!!!!
So, what exactly does SYNC & MERGE mean? what will be the final results?
with my iPod shuffle, I'm able to "auto fill" from a folder of pre-selected podcasts in iTunes. After listening to the iPod for awhile, I reconnect the iPod to iTunes (on the computer) & the podcasts in iTunes are updated as with actions taken on the iPod. for example, iTunes on the computer will indicate wether or not I listened to these particular podcasts on the iPod or not, & will also remember where I left off. So it seems that the iPod updates iTunes on the computer.
But, ... this does NOT seem to be the same with the iPhone. It seems like when I plug in my iPhone to the computer & "sync", iTunes isn't updated as to what I already watched on the iPhone, like the iPod did. In order to update iTunes with what i already watched on the iPhone, I need to manually delete the vidcasts from the iTunes on the computer, which seems like a step back from my little iPod shuffle.
ALSO: if I change contact information on my iPhone, will this updated info be lost when I connect the iPhone to the Computer?
So what exactly does SYNC & MERG mean?
It seems that the iPhone reacts differently for different media. I'm very confused & I wish there was a place to understand all this without the generic "sync" word being used without explanation. does sync mean replace, update, ... ????
I've been searching around the net for this info for awhile, but all I find is these terms, without sufficient information as to what exactly MERGE & SYNC actually do.
Can someone suggest some place that explains this in the detail I'm looking for?
    Thanks so much.
    Jesse Luke

Under the Podcasts tab for your iPhone sync preferences, there are various options. I have sync all unplayed episodes of selected podcasts to be transferred to my iPhone. If I listen to an podcast on my iPhone in it's entirety, the podcast will be removed from my iPhone when syncing with iTunes.
The iPhone includes a sync process - some of the data included with the sync process is a one way transfer process only from your computer to your iPhone such as iTunes music, and the same for selected photos to be transferred from your computer to your iPhone.
The sync process for contact info, calendar events, and Safari bookmarks with the supported applications on your computer is a bidirectional or true sync process. When syncing an iPhone for contact info the first time with a supported application on your computer that includes contact info, you will be provided a merge prompt if your iPhone includes any contact info that was manually entered in your iPhone's address book. This will merge the contact info between the two. After the first sync or merge for this data, it will be a bidirectional or true sync process. Change info for a contact on your iPhone, and the info will be changed for the contact info with the supported address book on your computer when followed by a sync, and vice-versa. Add a new contact with the supported address book on your computer, and the new contact will be transferred to your iPhone's address book during the next sync, and vice versa. The same applies to calendar events when syncing with a supported calendar app on your computer.

  • Apple_Boot Recovery HD partition - what exactly does it do?

On a new MacBook Air (Mid 2011) there is a partiton on the internal solid state drive that shows up (you can see it by using Terminal, then type "diskutil list" at the prompt) as Apple_Boot Recovery HD  650.0 MB   disk0s3.
My question is what exactly does this partition provide?  Is the Internet still required to accomplish a "Reinstall Mac OS X"?
Does the partition just provide a quick way to reach the Mac OS X Utilities pane (see below) when restarting your computer while holding down the Command and R keys?
If the partition is not on a MacBook Air (Mid 2011) do you reach exactly the same functionality when you are required to download the Mac OS X Utilities pane from the Internet?
Once at the Mac OS X Utilities pane, would you be required to use the Internet to accomplish a "Reinstall Mac OS X" even with the presence of the the Apple_Boot Recovery HD partition?

    2. You can boot from any Recovery HD regardless of its location provided it's connected. For example you can use the Lion Recovery Disk Assistant -  OS X Lion: About Lion Recovery Disk Assistant - to put a Recovery HD volume onto a small USB flash drive with at least 2 GBs of space. You can install Lion onto a 16 GB USB flash drive in which case the installer will include a Recovery HD partition.
    3. If you boot from the Recovery HD then the reinstallation is by Internet. If you have your own bootable USB Lion flash drive, then the reinstallation will take place from the flash drive. Here's how the flash drive is made:
    Make Your Own Lion Installer
    1. After downloading Lion you must first save the Install Mac OS X Lion application. After Lion downloads DO NOT click on the Install button. Go to your Applications folder and make a copy of the Lion installer. Move the copy into your Downloads folder. Now you can click on the Install button. You must do this because the installer deletes itself automatically when it finishes installing Lion.
    2. Get a USB flash drive that is at least 8 GBs. Prep this flash drive as follows:
Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
    3. Locate the saved Lion installer in your Downloads folder. CTRL- or RIGHT-click on the installer and select Show Package Contents from the contextual menu. Double-click on the Contents folder to open it. Double-click on the SharedSupport folder. In this folder you will see a disc image named InstallESD.dmg.
    4. Plug in your freshly prepared USB flash drive. You are going to clone the InstallESD.dmg disc image to the flash drive as follows:
    Open Disk Utility.
Select the USB flash drive from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the USB flash drive volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Drag the InstallESD.dmg disc image file into the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
When the clone is completed you have a fully bootable Lion installer that  you can use without having to re-download Lion.

  • CreateMergingDataSource, what exactly does it do?

I want to mix two or more audio sources of the same format with createMergingDataSource method and I want do know what exactly that metod do?
Does it merge input audio sources like suming all the inputs or just put one packet after another in serial form, and so on?
When I try to listen to output of createMergingDataSource with
Player under JMStudio it plays streams separately so I supose it doesn't have option to play mixed stream or...?
If anyone knows, please response. Tnx!

    Hello..
I have been reading the messgae reagarding merging the data source.. I am facing similar issued on the same..
Let me explain what i am trying to achieve
I have 3 machiens . From two machines i am doing multicasting in different ports using JMF. Bothe Machine 1 and 2 is having Webcams to stream video
    Machine 1 : Video : 224.123.111.101:22224
    Machine 1 : Audio : 224.123.111.101:22226
    Machine 2 : Audio : 224.123.111.101:22228
    Machine 2 : Video : 224.123.111.101:22230
Now on the third machine I am creating 2 JPanels and I am reciving the video from both the machines and I am able to place anywhere in the panel to achieve PIP (Picture in Picture)
But this is doubling my bandwidth. So i am looking for a soulution to mix the video before placing in the panel
Let both machine stream in the same port , I want a mechanism to mix these videos and send it to the reciever on one port the reciver should be able to see in PIP way.
If i mix them before sending it itself i wll be able to save the bandwidth.
Can anyone suggest me a way out for this
    Thanks in advance

  • What exactly does "rejuvenate my system" do??

have never run it, but didn't it to change any settings, etc... What exactly does it do and to what files/programs?? Thanks for the info

    untmom2003,
Description of Rejuvenation copied from the Rescue & Recovery Help window:
    Rejuvenating your system
When you select to rejuvenate your system, the Rescue and Recovery(TM) program optimizes system performance by completing the following actions:
Performs a new incremental backup of your system. This backs up all new or changed files so that all current files are saved in a backup.
Defragments your hard drive and backup files. This maximizes the performance of your hard drive and backups so that all your data is stored in the same place on your hard disk. This enables your data to be located and displayed more quickly.
Restores your operating system and application files from a backup of your choice. This enables you to choose which backup to use to restore your computer. You might want to choose a particular backup that you know to be free of viruses, adware or spyware. Or, if you are having serious problems with your operating system or applications, you might choose to restore files that you backed up before you started having problems.
Restores you current settings and some personal data from the registry. This enables your computer to retain the features that you had previously set up.
The rejuvenation process maintains your current settings and data while helping to eliminate viruses, adware and spyware. Applications installed or uninstalled after the selected backup was created might need to be installed again to function correctly. This operation might take some time.

  • Backup flash restore what exactly

I think I've missed something. Over the last couple of weeks my N900 was sluggish, ignore calls, not able to call etc so I decided to backup and flash it. After that I restored the backup. This left me with an unrecognizable device. It looks like backup and restore does virtually nothing. no settings are restored. For starters the desktop is void. The desktop background image is gone, the alarms are gone. None of the installed applications are restored.
So that leaves me: what exactly is backuped up and restored.?

wow...small backups.  i actually REALLY use my device.
btw...i was ssh into my device and copying a folder from my device to my pc, sms, sending/recieving email and also sent the above screenshot via bluetooth to my pc all at the same time!
try to do that with something else other then a nokia....fu-get-uh-bout-it!
ok, so HERE is a copy of my basic starter that i give anyone that gets a new n900 to start with.  it was created a while ago, includes no contact/calendar/email data, only the repos and basic starter apps that make the device better.  i cannot remember if it includes the cSSU or not....maybe i should create a new one.
but...none the less, there it is.
the back up you create on your device should back everything up that is pertaining to the original functioning of the device...meaning, that if you want to have an application data backed up, you should not rely on the device backup to include that data as the backup function will not grab it.
so the best thing to do is to either ssh and copy the entire root folder to your pc, or you can use filebox and copy only the few folders that contain the data over to a memory card and then place them back after the restore.
HERE is how to back up l337 wise.
this is what is being saved in the general backup:
    The Backup application will save:
Communication and Calendar: Stored conversations, accounts, contacts, and calendar entries. Only applies to content used with stock applications. (i.e. not Pidgin, or other third-party applications)
Bookmarks: Bookmarks stored via MicroB. (Default browser only)
Settings: Your current settings in the Settings "application." (Settings in /home/user, GConf, /etc.) Third party settings applets will also be backed up and restored once installed. Manually created shell scripts or other files (except those in eMMC/MyDocs) must be manually backed up prior to a rootfs flash.
Application List: A list of repositories and installed applications to be re-activated and installed after flashing. (Only applies to applications and repositories installed via the included Application Manager)

  • What exactly is support for "personal domains"?

From what I gather from clicking on "setup personal domain" in iWeb is that you have to have a .Mac account for this to work?
Is this true? [just to make sure]
I was hoping for iWeb to allow for FTP uploading to your own server ...

So what exactly is the new support for "personal domain names" then? I've been able to publish to a folder and ftp to my domain all long.
You have been ftping to your host, not your "domain." "Personal domain names" enables you to use .Mac as your host and thus use direct publishing while keeping your personal url/domain name (instead of the .Mac url, web.mac.com/username). In the past you could already do this by arranging domain forwarding and perhaps masking at the place where you had your personal domain name sitting. The new .Mac feature provides a better way to do this.
I want to use iWeb's "direct publishing" feature but not have my site at .mac
That is not possible in iWeb 08. Many have asked for it since iWeb 06 came out, and Apple did not include it, so I would not expect it to be added via an update later.
