What exactly is a Security Update?

I keep applying Security Updates from the Software Update panel when available, but what do these actually do. I am assuming they have something to do with "security"? What range of things can these include?

They are patches that address various security issues. That could be anything from a piece of code in an application to settings in the system. The latest update is detailed here. This link will give you information on other security updates. When you see a security update go to the downloads page and click on more info and it will tell what it is intended for.

  • OK, So What Exactly Is Being Copied/Updated Here?

    Hi,
Since the last time I synced my 32GB iPod Touch, I've added just ONE song to my iTunes library and played a bunch of songs which were already in my library.
I've just synced my iPod Touch now and the message I get (along the top of the iTunes window) is :-
    "Updating Files"........> "Copying 1 of 42"
Why does the iPod not just copy the one song I've added to my library since the previous sync?
Does the iPod also 'update' or 'copy' all the songs I've played via iTunes since the previous sync?
I've only added the one new song, no artwork or lyrics or any other stuff.
Anything I can do to stop the iPod seemingly updating all of the recently played songs? I'm using USB 1.1 so it's pretty slow........
Also, the audio content drops from 10.26GB to 10.10GB and then slowly increases again to 10.26GB by the end of the syncing process......
    Thanks in advance...

Hi, thanks for the replies. Much appreciated!
Neuroanatomist :- I've not adjusted anything related to the songs such as volume/EQ etc. Nor do I have iTunes to automatically get artwork. I will make a note of this point though for next time.
Chris CA :- regarding Smart Playlists, I've just checked the 'recently played' Smart Playlist in my iTunes and it's been updated with all the songs which have been played on my iPod today. So it's syncing from the iPod to iTunes.
It's kind of spooky because I can track what time I set off for work in my car (8.10am) and then what time I arrived at work (8.30am) and any journey during my day when I have the iPod playing!!
Would "manually manage music etc" stop the iPod syncing to update my 'recently played' Smart Playlist iTunes?
If not, I'm going to have to sync regularly so as not to be stuck with a massive sync update from iPod to iTunes.
BTW hope this all makes sense..
    Thanks again.......

  • What exactly was the recent update supposed to do?

I just recently got this phone. It's my first smartphone, actually. But when activated, it was downloading the most recent update. Now, I read somewhere that this update was supposed to a lot of things for the phone, including fixing the bug that makes you receive duplicate messages. Well, I just received 4 texts from my friend saying Hey. I asked her if she sent it 4 times, and she said no. So, did the update not fix this problem? My expectations for a smartphone aren't too high, considering I had just upgraded from an LG Cosmos, but I at least expect problems to be fixed when new updates are released... I used to love LG phones, but right now, I'm not too thrilled with this one...

Hi there! I'm sorry you haven't seen the benefits of the recent software update! You can see the list of benefits online: http://bit.ly/vutR3O. I would be happy to assist with the duplicate messages you've been receiving! Does this happen with one or two specific contacts? Do they have you listed in their phone as a 10 digit number (Not 7 or 11 digit)? Also, are you using any third party text apps like handcent, etc? Please keep me posted with more info so I can help!
    Thanks,

  • What happened to the "Security Update for Microsoft Word 2010 (KB2899519) 32-Bit Edition" software update?

When I deployed my software updates this particular one shows that there is some hash mismatch. So I deleted it from the package, the software update group, and the data library in the content library on my DP.
Then I wanted to re-download it and re-deploy it, but it does not show up at all in the "All Software Updates" section.
    Am I missing something here?
    Thanks

I did click that bar, Peter, and it still does not show that update.
Is this just me, or is this really odd?
I was able to successfully re-deploy this update by going into the update group created by the ADR and downloading that update in my 2014 package that it needed it to go into (the ADR that I currently have is for my 2015 package that will start running in
January, but when I ran it, it went into the 2015 package). Then I right clicked on the software update and added it to my DEC 2014 update group by selecting the "Edit Membership" option and then I checked on the "DEC 2014" box.
After that, I just updated the DP and then ran the necessary client actions from the Right-Click Tools from Now Micro on my collection and it installed just fine.
The only update that shows up in the "All Software Updates" section is the 64-bit version of KB2899519, not the 32-bit that I am looking for.
But, I would really LOVE to know why this update is not showing up in the "All Software Updates" section.
    Thanks

  • Security Update 2008-008 No user window.

I do apologise if this is the incorrect discussion group, but I couldn’t find a email address to report this so I thought I would post it and it may eventually get to the right people.
I’ve just updated (using Software Update) the latest Security Update 2008-008. The Mac was running perfectly beforehand (all updates and security updates to date).
When using the Mac I regularly switch between user accounts, however I have found that after the update if I log out of a user account (with no admin privileges) the main user accounts window does not appear. (I am left with the desktop picture of the account I have tried to log out of and no menu bar.)
The only solution I have found to this problem (in each instance after the initial one, I have waited for 5 minutes to give the system a chance) is to hold down the power key until it switches off the Mac. The Mac then starts up fine and displays the user window, from there I can choose which account I want to use.
As I switch between these accounts throughout the day, shutting down the Mac, between switches, will seriously impede getting anything done.
Nevertheless, the above problem does not manifest itself when I have logged out of the admin account, this appears to be working as it should. The list of user accounts opens and I can choose an account as normal. Additionally, the problem does not appear if a user account is already open and I am logging onto another account from the fast user switching menu.
I realise the short term solution is to have an account open all the time, but this is not ideal, as the open account I am sure, will be using resources unnecessarily.
If however, someone has a more substantial solution then I would be most grateful for the suggestion.

Accounts are numbered 501, 502, etc. as the computer sees them, so that's the origin of the multiple trash folders. Each account has its own trash.
As you can read in an earlier post and through the links, safe mode does move some things to the trash so it does act as a temporary purge of items.
I just tried reading the file about what the most recent security update changes. I don't really understand most of it but I didn't see anything that specifically said log out modification to me. It is pretty hard trying to resolve logout issues and you seem to have this strange combination of accounts that work and don't work.
One thing you haven't done but could try is booting from your installer disc and run Disk Utility's repair drive (not permissions but drive). Actually, running Applejack does a reduced version of the same thing but it's worth a try if only to see what it reports about drive condition.
Dock. I am not sure what the dock would have to do with this. You could try removing the com.apple.dock.plist file from your home directory > Library > Preferences folder. Just move it to someplace else temporarily and see if that clears up anything on a logout.
It appears that this Secuirty update 2008-008 (10.4.11) is causing an ever increasing circle of problems as more posts are appearing in various places on the Internet.
This happens after any kind of update, but especially an update which changes components of the operating system. It is really a matter of matter of perception. It looks like there's a lot of problems because the hundred people who do have problems post here to ask about the problem. What you don't see are the thousands (millions?) of people who do not post because they did not have a problem.
There's been recent discussions as to what steps are truly necessary in doing a minimal problem update.
I think #1 to which all agree is to make sure you have a backup of your computer in case you do need to back out of it again.
Some like to boot from their installer discs or an external backup and verify (and if necessary repair) their internal drives as well as drive permissions. This is done with Disk Utility.
You can also go to the step of booting into safe mode to do the install.
I like to download the update onto my computer and install it from there rather than let Software Update do it. I know a few people who had problems with doing the update via software updater found a manual install to work.
    Repair permissions again afterward.
It also helps to only install one update at a time and to run the computer for a while to make sure it is behaving well.
Almost all of the above steps (except backup) have been questioned as to necessity because probably many people have done successful updates without doing them. I say they can't hurt, they can very likely do good (especially if your computer isn't regularly maintained), so why not do them to be safe.
I cannot bear the idea, but having spent the last 20 or so hours trying to solve this problem, I am left with reinstalling the entire system from scratch. I cannot believe that this is my only alternative. And for the moment at least it will remain on the shelf.
Well, I am not a computer expert (just another Mac user with a few years on the clock) and I am running out of ideas. Maybe somebody else will happen by who can figure out what is going on. Can you think of anything that is different about the problem accounts that makes them different from the others? Any special software installed?
Incidentally, how much free space do you have on your hard drive? Sometimes stragne issues can arise if drives are getting over full.

Not all security updates change the farm build #, but some do. It just depends on what is in the security update.

  • What exactly are the updates good for on an ipod

I ask because mine is windows format, and im having trouble transferring all the metadata off my ipod with senuti to a back up so that i can reformat the ipod to mac and then sync in my senuti backed up library. I was wondering if anyone knows what exactly are the updates that you get. my ipod is 1.2 5thgen.
If i were to have the latest update would i be able to see album cover art view when the ipod is plugged into itunes? I noticed that i can see that view in library mode but not in ipod mode. (my pod isnt synced)...
so what are these updates good for?

    hey thanks for your reply.
I do have it set to manual and i can see the art on the ipod by itself, but even with manual transfer itunes wont let me view the artwork modes unless i am playing off my computers library (which doesn't have the songs on my ipod on it). I called apple earlier today and some tech support guy claimed that itunes does not support this feature. Is this correct? can anyone out there see artwork modes on an unsynced ipod through itunes?

  • What next.... (Security Update 2008-003)

    Greetings all,
I know that there are numerous threads here already about this problem that many of us seem to be having. Mine is similar so I will try to explain with as much detail as I can. Please read the whole post because I have followed most if not all of the advice I've found in replies to this topic and nothing has worked thus far. My desktop (Gigabit Ethernet G4 running 10.4.11) is the unit with the problems, my laptop (15" Powerbook running 10.4) is running fine and has pulled field medic duty in trying to fix this. I've been able to successfully Target Disk the desktop from the laptop and all my files are still there, the bugger just won't finish starting up. I explain in detail below.
So the other night I downloaded and installed the Security Update 2008-003 via the Software Update pane. All went well, no error messages or hiccups. I restarted the computer as necessary and it gets all the way to the end of the blue progress bar on the "Starting up Mac OS..." stage and hangs. I waited a long time and it still just hung. Sound familiar?
I know many people have said that this is due to pre-existing problems or messy systems but I run maintenance on mine fairly regularly and it was working strong before the update.
Here's what I have tried so far:
    • started in safe mode or at least I tried to, i held shift but it still got to the same place and hung up so maybe I didn't hold it at the right time? I held it after the chime until I saw the grey apple screen with the progress clock
    • put my desktop into Target Disk mode and connected to my laptop, I ran Disk Utility and repaired the disk until everything came out clean. Repair/Verify Permissions, however, was grayed out (more on this in a second).
    • Ran Disk Warrior from the laptop on the Target Disk desktop drive. It recognized it and attempted to run a clean up but I kept getting an error message saying it is too severely damaged and can't be repaired. This even after I had run Disk Utility with a clean bill of health.
    • I tried resetting the PRAM several times but it didn't help.
    • started in single-user mode and ran "fsck -fy" per some unix commands I found on the forums. it came back clean numerous times. I also tried running repair permissions via the same screen but the cursor would just jump down to a blank line and nothing I input would do anything.
    • held option during startup to bring up the startup disk selection screen. It loaded but the little stopwatch just spun and wouldn't let me select my second hard-drive as my startup. That would've solved a ton of problems right there as the second drive never got the update and I've used that to fix the first in the past.
    • with the desktop targeted I ran terminal in the laptop and tried the unix repair permissions command from there but it gave me some jargon about the command and a line about ownership of the drive and wouldn't do it.
    • finally, I put my desktop into target disk mode, and started the laptop from the OS installer CD. I ran Disk Utility from the laptop on the desktop and I was able to do both Repair Disk AND Repair Permissions. The disk was fine, the permissions had some fixes but came back clean on a second pass. I figured this would fix it all but, alas, no dice. Still hanging at the end of "Starting Mac OS...".
Is there something I am missing or anything else I can try? As I said all the files and info are still there because I can get to them just fine via the Target Disk mode, it just won't finish loading the OS. My other issue is that I have a second hard drive in the desktop and the Target Disk mode only mounts the primary drive. The second drive is my backup drive and I need to be able to access it.
Any help would be greatly greatly appreciated folks, thanks so much!!

    Update:
I also looked in the system.log file and found this repeated numerous times at the end:
launchd: /system/library/coreservices/loginwindow.app/contents/macos/loginwindow port /dev/console exited abnormally: segmentation fault
    Below it, this:
launchd: getty repeating too quickly on port /dev/console, sleeping
Interspersed among the lines about the loginwindow were other inputs, most notably these:
The following startupitems failed to properly start:
    /library/startupitems/symdcinit
    -execution of startup script failed
    system/library/startupitems/fibrechannel
    -execution of startup script failed
Again, are any of these files ones that can be trashed and will be rebuilt by the OS when it starts? Or can copies be dragged from my healthy system to the failing one to overwrite them?
IF you are fully backed up AND the two systems are running the same version of the OS on the same architecture (e.g. both PPC or both Intel) then you could try dragging items from the laptop to replace. Alternatively, you could use Pacifist to extract them from the install disk or from a later OS update where available.
I would create a directory /Library/StartupItems.disabled and drag the contents of /Library/StartupItems into that folder. Nothing there is critical so disable all of that stuff for now. I would do the same with /Library/LaunchDaemons.disabled and /Library/LaunchAgents.disabled if applicable. Then do the same with any corresponding folders in your user Library.
You'll still need to replace the FibreChannel item because that's system and presumably important.
I'm thinking, though, that the number of errors you're seeing probably indicates an archive and install would be the best option.

  • What is the exact use of statistical updates in V1,V2 and V3

    Hi,
Can anyone answer me some questions.
    1. what is the exact use of statistial update in V1,v2 and V3. If data is same in both document update and statistical update the why u need a second table with redundant data.
    2. When BW extracts data is it recommended to extract from statistical tables or document updated tables.(i read that statistical updation is tailored for reporting)
    3. Is V3 applicable only when BW extracts data from R/3.
4.In case of V3 the initialization of updates are done from BW side or R/3 side. i mean is there any relationship between scheduling of dataloading using an infopackage in BW and the V3 process taking place in R/3

    1. First one has to understand that R3 is OLTP system purely used for transactin processing while BW is used for OLAP ie reporting purpose only. At a table level if we do not have  a redundant second table the R3 system will be over loaded when the OLTP & the OLAP systems access the same table for their respective purposes. So we have to take data from the document table with a time lag and put into the statistical tables so that BW will get the data as and when required.
    2. This question is related to 1 and the above answers both.
    3. V3 is a generic process and is used for data extraction from the R3 transaction tables and can be used for any system as such.
    4. Both the processes are independent of each other and there is no relationship.
    Hope this helps
    Cheers
    Viva
