What exactly is Air Drop and Air Play?

I keep seeing these cutely coined phrases such as Air Drop and Air Play but I can't find a full explanation as to what they are and how to use them. Can anyone direct me to a source where these are explained in detail?

Cannot get air play on my phone and it insists on placing air drop where the icon for air play should be.

That's a kernel panic and indicates some sort of problem either with the computer's hardware or software. Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on diagnosing kernel panics. It would help to post the panic log: Mac OS X- How to log a kernel panic.
Meanwhile, try booting the computers into Safe Mode then restarting normally. If this is simply a disk repair or cache file problem then this may fix it.
You can also try creating a new admin account on each computer then booting into the new account. This would help determine if the problem is related to a bad file in the user accounts.

I would like to copy my iPhoto (9.4.1) library from my Mac Pro (10.7.5) to a Macbook Pro (10.7.5). Can I drag the iPhoto Library to Air Drop and send them to the MacBook? Will that then be a usable iPhoto library on the Macbook?

It would be better if you could connect the two Macs via a hard wired LAN to copy the library from the Mac Pro to the MacBook. Wireless connections can have momentary dropouts which could affect the reliable copying of files.
If you do go with Air Drop be sure to open and inspect the copied library closely to confirm it was a successulf copy.

Air Drop and File Sharing Between Macs Please HELP

I have a 2011 Mac Book Pro running Mavericks and a 2010 Mac Pro running mountain lion and I am having trouble air Dropping and file sharing between them.
My MBP works fine. It can see other macs and share with them on my home network. My MP on the other hand cant see any other computers under the shared devices location in my finder. I have turned on file sharing for my MP as well as screen sharing. Neither works. My Mp used to be able to Air Drop and File share.
When I try to Air Drop to my MP it wont receive the item.
Has someone been through this before and know how to fix the issue? Ive been trying to research this for a while and haven't been able to find a solution.
Any help would be great!

Are you using a frieWall on individual Macs?
If you are using a Router you control, individual computer FireWalls are not needed.

Roughly speaking, previously to Java1.2 you had two variable-type choices in Java. The first is a static variable that is the same across ALL instances of a class. The second was an instance variable, that is can be different in EVERY instance of a class. Java 1.2 introduced the ThreadLocal variable-type. If a variable type is ThreadLocal, then every running Thread may see a different value for the variable - essentially it is a Map of Threads to values.
InheritableThreadLocal is finely different from ThreadLocal. They are almost identical excepting that if one Thread is spawned from another (ie. it is a "child" thread) then the value of the InheritableThreadLocal variable will be the same in the child Thread as the parent Thread.
As to when it could be used, I'm not so sure (other than the no-brainer "when you want a variable to have different values in different Threads"). I'd be interested to hear about any instances where someone has used a variable such as this.

I have 3 Macs. Air Drop appears on and functions on two of them - the MacBook Air and the Powerbook. But Air Drop does not appear at all on the iMac. It is not to be found in Finder nor through a search. Why might this be?

AIR runtime and AIR applications built using Captive Runtime still need Admin Privilege to Install

I am working on a small project to install AIR application(native .exe & .dmg) with AIR runtime without needing the Administrator privilege so I used Captive runtime but the installation is still asking for admin privilege
I bundled AIR application with AIR runtime using Captive runtime from flash builder 4.6, then I packaged this into a .MSI using Advanced Installer. Now when I install it for a user without admin privilege it prompts me for Admin credentials.
Can you please tell me if
1. I need AIR distribution license to install AIR runtime without Admin privilege
2. Do I need a different installer
3. Am I missing any step here

If you're installing to a location where Windows requires elevated privileges, like Program Files, you'll need to have admin privileges to continue. Are you using an AIR based native installer or have you taken the application with the captive runtime and rolled this up in your own installer?
Here's a section from the Installation and deployment options in Adobe AIR 3 article that might help:
Installation privileges
When designing an installer, one has the option to choose from approaches that may or may not require administrative privilege. For example, a drag-and-drop install on Mac OS X requires no special privilege; users can always copy the application into their own application folders, for which they have the necessary permissions. On the other hand, if registry keys must be written to the machine-specific portion of the registry on Windows, installation of that application will require administrative privilege to do so.
The two installer formats directly supported by AIR, AIR files and native installers, have always required administrative privilege. This was a design decision made in part to simplify the implementation of the AIR installers: If administrative privilege is assumed to be available, implementation is possible if the registry can be written to, and so on. Silent install Air Runtime and Air App with custom installer?

I want to use a custom installer that will perform some actions, and then silently install air runtime and an air application. The goal here is to be able to perform a customized install for an Air application (for a user that might not have Air installed) without confusing the user with multiple install screens. What exactly is LAME encoding and how would I use

Just as the topic says Is there a program that'll simplify the process? Is this only used for ripping tracks from a CD?
Also, do I have any alternati'ves to Napster with which you can only download WMAs at 28? Are there any music sites out there that have better quality music?

There are a few options available - but as Khakiass said, LAME is considered by many to be the best MP3 encoder out there. I have tried several different ways over the last month and here are my two favorites.
For ease of use, the CD-DA X-tractor is great. Very simple to use and pretty fast too. I did have some issues when encoding at the highest (0) VBR quality with LAME - some files would not play back. Setting to a lower quality (like 2) fixed that problem. You can find more details here http://www.mp3-converter.com/cdda_xtractor.htm. That same MP3-convertor site has a lot of other good info about different packages and encoders - worth looking around to learn a lot of stuff...
For the highest quality (with a little steeper learning curve) the EAC (Exact Audio Copy) software with the LAME encoder add-on is probably the best to be had. This is what I am currently using and it is a very powerful combo. Don't let the learning curve keep you from trying it (I did at first and after I finally tried it, I fell in love with it) - and it isn't that hard to setup. The biggest problem is that the software doesn't have an installer with it, you just unzip the files to a working folder and change the options to suit you. AND there are lots and lots of options!! Don't be afraid to look around and try different options to find what works best for you!

As per my knowledge this both are completly different concepts and have different use.
SAP Livecache is used in SAP SCM/APO to increase speed of processing by using main memeory
Whereas Oracle RAC is used for HA and scalability.

USB communication AIR desktop and AIR mobile app

Hi! Does somebody know the possibilites of USB communication between and AIR desktop app and an AIR mobile app. I need to send files from an desktop application to the external memory on an mobile device. Is it possible for the desktop app to recognise when the mobile is connected. And is it possible for the mobile app to send commands the desktop app? So I need a two way communication. Anybody who has any ideas?
