What exactly is Airport Express and AirTunes?

Sounds like a system to send music wirelessly to any HiFi... Is that right and how does it work/what do I need? Would an audiophile be satisfied with the quality of sound? i.e. is this something that would be out of place on a high end audio system or more suited to the more usual integrated stereo systems?.
I am using an Apple TV as a music source and just wondering whether the Airport is a possible alternative.
Does the airport also transmit video?
Thanks!

Sounds like a system to send music wirelessly to any HiFi... Is that right and how does it work/what do I need?
The AirPort Express Base Station (AX) is a combination NAT router, wireless access point, print server, and a target device to receive AirTunes audio streams.
AirTunes uses the Remote Audio Access Protocol (RAOP) to stream music to the AX. RAOP is based on the Real Time Streaming Protocol (RTSP) but with an extra challenge-response based authentication step.
For audio playback, you would need the following as a minimum:
o An iTunes host with with either wired Ethernet or wirelessly capability.
o Powered-speakers or an audio receiver with either analog RCA or digital/optical inputs.
o Either a 3.5 mm minijack-to-dual RCA or a 3.5 mm TOSLINK cable.
Would an audiophile be satisfied with the quality of sound? i.e. is this something that would be out of place on a high end audio system or more suited to the more usual integrated stereo systems?
For the AX, the audio is handled by a Texas Instruments PCM2705 digital-to-analog converter which it outputs on a 3.5mm stereo minijack. However, the innermost end of the 3.5mm jack is an optical S/PDIF transmitter.
The AX works only with iTunes v4.6+ and is limited to music files that iTunes can read; ie, 16-bit data only. (An exception is you can use a third-party product like Rogue Amoeba's AirFoil to stream other non-iTunes sources.) These data, though, can be in any file format that iTunes recognizes, from lossy MP3s at the low-quality end of the spectrum to Apple Lossless and lossless AIF or WAV files at the high end. It is also important to note that the AX functions only at a 44.1kHz sample rate. When you play 32kHz or 48kHz data, iTunes sample-rate-converts the data in real time before sending it to the AX.
iTunes uses a QuickTime CODEC to convert audio files to Apple Lossless, and then, uses AirTunes to send them to the AX. In turn, the AX uses built-in software that converts the Apple Lossless to an Encoded Digital Audio format. From there, digital audio is sent to a optical transceiver to convert the electrical signal to an optical one before sending it to the innermost part of the audio port. For analog, the AX has a built-in DAC to convert the Encoded Digital Audio to Analog which is sent to the same audio port.
I am using an Apple TV as a music source and just wondering whether the Airport is a possible alternative.
Unlike the Apple TV, the AX has no means of storing audio content. It is only a "relay" between the iTunes host and the sound playback device. Note: With the latest firmware update, the Apple TV can now use AirTunes to stream to an AX.
Does the airport also transmit video?
No. There are no video CODECs built-in the AX.

  • Want to know about the AirPort Express and AirTunes

I have been contemplating purchasing an AirPort Express to stream music from my bedroom into the entertainment room in a 4 bedroom apartment. I have a wireless G D-link router which could be better but its not going to get better any time soon. As far as AirTunes goes, i have been researching it but still have questions on how it works exactly. Also, is it possible to play music through the speakers that are currently hooked up to my computer and through the stero in my living room simulaneously with this device.

So i have the airport express and i want to use internet at the same time as streaming my music to my stereo. I also have a router that i normally use for internet. My problem is, how do i use them at the same time because the airport run's or the router runs not both. I tried running a ethernet cord from the router to the airport express, and i can now recieve internet and stream music, but i want to be able to use my router instead of the express. also if i can't and have to go through the express, can i password protect the internet connection because i have no idea how to use settings for this device?

  • Solved: AirPort Express and AirTunes Audio Distortion Connected to a Stereo

*The problem*: Terrible sound distortion while using AirPort Express AirTunes features. Even when nothing was plugged in, there would be a buzzing noise.
*The setup*: AirPort Express connected via 3.5mm stereo jack to a pair of computer stereo speakers. Note: This post does not apply to you if you are using an optical Toslink between the AirPort Express and your speakers. iTunes installed on a Mac. AirTunes setup to allow music to stream wirelessly to AirPort Express and speakers.
*The solution*: The AirPort Express needs to be grounded. The included AC tip is only two prong. In the US, the third prong (round) is used for grounding.
Therefore you just need to attach the three prong AC tip. This is not included with the AirPort Express. What you need is the Apple Power Extension Cord which has a 3 prong tip.
    Example:
    http://www.amazon.com/Adapter-Extension-Apple-PowerBook-Notebook/dp/B002V4XKRS
This is the same extension cord that comes with most Apple notebooks.
    Hope this helps!

    Bob,
This is really simple so no instructions are necessary.
Plug in the new Express when you get it and have it "Join the existing network"...
Give the iTunes Music section a name like "Front Room Stereo" and that's it...
Plug the stereo into the Express and select it in iTunes for playing music.

  • Airport Express and Airtunes not working

Hi all. I have a Digital Audio G4. I've been able to use my G4 with iTunes and my Airport Express for quite a while. All of sudden iTunes no longer sees it. The Airport Admin Utility doesn't see it either. But I can still connect to the internet with it. What makes this even weirder is, I also have a MacBook Pro. The MacBook Pro has no problem seeing the Airport Express in the Airport Admin Utility and in iTunes.
Any Help you can give is much appreciated.

I can't offer any help. I am having the same problem except I have an Airport Extreme with the Airport Express acting as an extender. The only thing that works for me is unplugging the Airport Express and plugging it back in. Sometimes it is fine the entire day. Other times I have to do this multiple times throughout the day. I don't think this is a good, long-term solution. Any help anyone?

  • What exactly is AirPort Express

Ok this may sound silly but I've read the apple stores description of AirPort Express and am a bit confused, basically I have a windows desktop at home and also an iBook, my desktop is connected to BTYahoo Broadband via a USB modem my iBook has AirPort built in I believe as it picks up a wireless connection when I'm at work. What I want to know is would an AirPort Express allow me to plug my USB modem into my windows desktop and give me wireless access in my iBook at the same time? Does what I'm asking make sense?

What you are asking does make sense - but things don't work quite as you described.
What you need to do is replace your USB interface DSL modem with a "DSL gateway" that provides the ethernet interface required for connection to an Airport Express.

  • Airport Express and Airtunes no longer work error -15006

This is killing me, I feel at my wits end.
I have an airport express that has been in use for two years. I use it only for airtunes from itunes through my wireless network.
I have an apple TV that I added 2 months ago and use occasionally for airtunes, but mostly for all the fine things that apple TV does.
About a week ago, sometime after upgrading to Snow Leopard and before iTunes 9 I have completely lost airtunes connectivity. At first it was just the airport express, but today it is also the apple TV.
When I choose either speaker (apple TV or Airport) from iTunes it just tries to connect forEVER. Sometimes I get the error -15006.
    What I have:
24" iMac running snow leopard (wireless)
13" Macbook Pro snow leopard (wireless)
    Cisco Router WRT110
    Airport Express version 6.3 (wireless)
    AppleTV latest software (wireless)
    What I have done:
Reset and reloaded the Airport Express a dozen times. It worked for a minute after I changed the settings to require a password, but quickly went back to the same symptoms.
The airport shows up fine in Airport Utility, but will not work for airtunes.
The Apple TV shows up in iTunes and syncs properly, but will not respond to Airtunes. I have checked airtunes settings in the AppleTV and it is on. I even tried turning it off to see if it would improve the airport to no avail.
    Please help

Any advice out there? I've even taken bypassed my main Extreme base to plug the ethernet connection directly into the Mac desktop to do software updates that might have been missed by going through the Extreme and wifi. While it did install one security update, it didn't affect the Express units.
I'm wondering about firmware. I have checked over and over for software updates, and my system assures me that everything is up to date. However, I'm concerned that somehow I'm missing a firmware update. My Airport Utility tells me my Extreme is running on Version 5.7, and on the few times one of the Express units shows up, it shows as running Version 6.#.
Do I need to manually install a firmware update, and if so, how? I terrified that I will mess up the ONE wifi unit that is functioning.
Ironically, my Extreme base is the oldest in my batch-both of the Express units are newer than it.

  • No sound with Airport Express and AirTunes

Hi. I have an Airport Extreme wireless router. I recently extended the wifi network with an Airport Express. Both devices show "green" in Airport Utility and appear to be working fine. I then connected the Airport Express to a powered speaker.
In iTunes on my MacBook Pro, I can select my Airport Express from the menu in the bottom right corner. When I play a song, however, no sound comes out of the speaker. I tried disconnecting the speaker and connecting a pair of earbuds directly into the Airport Express. Still no sound. Any ideas?
As FYI, when I touch the Airport Express, I notice that it is quite hot on the sides. Is this normal?
    Thank you

for the avoidance of doubt, did you +enable airtunes+ in the music tab of the AX's airport utility music tab ?

can't say it is for my two units. have you made sure your unit is placed in a well ventilated spot ?

  • Hi-fi separates with Airport Express and Airtunes

Hi, please could you tell me whether it is possible to use a hi-fi separates system with airport express? it doesnt seem possible to me but i thought i would ask.
    regards
    ste bond

Ah. Much clearer to this antipodian now
If you have a look at page 15 of the Setup Guide for Airport Express, available at http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/AirPortExpressSetupGuide.pdf - it shows the connections it can be made to plug into.
Every hi-fi system I've seen has stereo RCA jacks (red and white plugs) on the back for accepting auxiliary inputs. You'll just need to get the appropriate cable from your supplier of choice. If you system is more modern, using fibre optic cabling may be a better option (avoids ground loops, avoids multiple analog/digital conversions, etc).
You can only use iTunes to send sound to the Airport Express, unless you get a third party application like AirFoil (from http://www.rogueamoeba.com/airfoil/ ), so technically "what I like" would need to be restricted to that which you had in iTunes, but basically, yes.

  • New Time Capsule, new MacBook, old Airport Express and Airtunes

I intend to buy a new MacBook and a Time Capsule, and I still have an old Airport Express, without 802.11n. I intend to use this Airport Express just for Airtunes, maybe to connect to a printer as well.
Now I was wondering, even though the Time Capsule is capable of using the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands simultaneously, the MacBook is only capable of using one band, right? So if I use Airtunes to stream music to my Airport Express, my MacBook would be forced to use the 2.4GHz band, thus slower Time Machine backups etcetera. Is this assumption correct?
Or will my MacBook send the Airtunes signal over the 5GHz band to the Time Capsule, which will send the signal over the 2.4GHz band to the Airport Express, thus not slowing down any Time Machine backups?

    I don't think so.

Yes I think this is correct. At least it seems to me that this is the purpose of having simultaneous dual-band. The time Capsule can send or receive on both bands at the same time, or receive on one band and then send on the other.

  • Airport Express and AirTunes vs. Me

My Airport Express worked for about 2 months with airtunes with no problems, then it rather suddenly refused to broadcast my speakers. Nothing was changed in the settings to cause this, and I have checked that all the correct options were selected. I can pick up speakers from another base station, but not mine. Also, when using my basestation at another location, AirTunes was able to find my speakers just fine (even though they were unattached at the time). I have also installed every update I could find.
    Thank you in advance!

I had a similar problem with a G5iMac. This would not see the speakers and yet a Powerbook in the same room attached to the same airport network would.
I finally cured the problem byt doing a thorough cache cleanout with Cocktail and a restart. At least this was the last thing I did before my speakers reappeared.
I hpe it works for you.

  • Airport express and airtunes

when I was on tiger, I had no problems at all. Since upgrading to leopard, it seems that when I now use airtunes it only plays out of one side of my speakers (the left speaker). I have updated all the software via software update and have the latest fimware on all devices. I think it might just be a setting that needs changing or something.
I would really appreciate any help. Thanks guys.

Go into system preferences, audio, and make sure that the output balance has not changed ... I have seen this happen on macbooks where the balance went all the way to the left after and update for some strange reason...

  • What exactly is airport express? does it replace having to have att or verizon internet?

just curious how this gadget works and why or if i should get it? does it replace existing internet services?

It is mainly a wireless router or can be used to extend an existing network from an Airport Extreme Base Station of Time Capsule. It does not replace services from your cable modem.

  • HT4587 My airport express and wireless airplay speaker are connected to wife, but airplay and homesharing are not working...what to do?

My airport express and wireless airplay speaker are connected to WIFI, but airplay and homesharing are not working...what to do?  Everything was working fine until about two weeks ago, all of the sudden airplay has disappeared from the iphone, itunes on the laptop, and the apple remote for iphone.  I have restarted the router many times, re-setup the airplay speaker and the airport express and booth are showing as being properly connected to the router when I log into the router IP address.  I was on the phone with Apple support for 30 minutes they blames verizon, got on the phone with verizon and they stated the settings were all correct and compatible with apple, got back on the phone with apple and they again are blaming verizon and trying to get me to get an airport extreme because that would fix the problem...any suggestions, please!

There are three Airport resets, soft, hard and factory default.  It would probably be beneficial if you tried each one in sequence.  Actually, you could jump to the factory default reset if you don't mind reconfiguring from scratch.

  • HT4262 I moved my airport express and now the light is solid orange.  What is wrong?

I moved my airport express and now the light is solid orange.  What is wrong?

Solid amber is an indication that the AirPort Express has locked up, or that an internal electrical component has failed.
Power off the Express for a few minutes, then power it up again. If the solid amber light persists, the next step would be to perform a Factory Default Reset on the Express to see if that will clear the lockup so the Express can be re-configured.
