  • What exactly is LAME encoding and how would I use

Just as the topic says Is there a program that'll simplify the process? Is this only used for ripping tracks from a CD?
Also, do I have any alternati'ves to Napster with which you can only download WMAs at 28? Are there any music sites out there that have better quality music?
    Thanks!

There are a few options available - but as Khakiass said, LAME is considered by many to be the best MP3 encoder out there. I have tried several different ways over the last month and here are my two favorites.
For ease of use, the CD-DA X-tractor is great. Very simple to use and pretty fast too. I did have some issues when encoding at the highest (0) VBR quality with LAME - some files would not play back. Setting to a lower quality (like 2) fixed that problem. You can find more details here http://www.mp3-converter.com/cdda_xtractor.htm. That same MP3-convertor site has a lot of other good info about different packages and encoders - worth looking around to learn a lot of stuff...
For the highest quality (with a little steeper learning curve) the EAC (Exact Audio Copy) software with the LAME encoder add-on is probably the best to be had. This is what I am currently using and it is a very powerful combo. Don't let the learning curve keep you from trying it (I did at first and after I finally tried it, I fell in love with it) - and it isn't that hard to setup. The biggest problem is that the software doesn't have an installer with it, you just unzip the files to a working folder and change the options to suit you. AND there are lots and lots of options!! Which is great because you can set it up the way that works best for you. Here is a great tutorial for this setup with download links too: http://users.pandora.be/satcp/cd2mp3-en.htm.
Don't be afraid to look around and try different options to find what works best for you!

  • What exactly is InheritableThreadLocal Storage, and how exactly do I use it

What exactly is InheritableThreadLocal Storage, and how exactly do I use it?

What exactly is InheritableThreadLocal Storage, andI have only seen one previous use of ThreadLocal objects and it was somewhere on http://www.javaworld.com on a solution to the Java double-checked locking problem.
Roughly speaking, previously to Java1.2 you had two variable-type choices in Java. The first is a static variable that is the same across ALL instances of a class. The second was an instance variable, that is can be different in EVERY instance of a class. Java 1.2 introduced the ThreadLocal variable-type. If a variable type is ThreadLocal, then every running Thread may see a different value for the variable - essentially it is a Map of Threads to values.
InheritableThreadLocal is finely different from ThreadLocal. They are almost identical excepting that if one Thread is spawned from another (ie. it is a "child" thread) then the value of the InheritableThreadLocal variable will be the same in the child Thread as the parent Thread.
As to when it could be used, I'm not so sure (other than the no-brainer "when you want a variable to have different values in different Threads"). I'd be interested to hear about any instances where someone has used a variable such as this.

  • What is a smart address and how do I use this function.

I am trying to find out how to add the name of a sender to my address book. Mail help says
" In a message you receive, click the arrow in a Smart Address and choose "Add to Address Book" from the pop-up menu. Or select a message in the message window and choose Message > Add Sender to Address Book."
Well, there isn't a Smart Address or any arrow to click. When I try to look up Smart Address in Mail help it tells me TopicListNoResults....!!
So what is this feature and how do I use it.?!

Look in the preview window at a message you have received and put the cursor over the From address. The name will be surrounded by a blue oval with a down arrow on the right end. Click the arrow and one of the options is add to address book.

What exactly is Livecache and how different is it from Oracle RAC since livecache is used for high availability? and should Livecahe be used only with MAXDB?

As per my knowledge this both are completly different concepts and have different use.

  • What exactly is this ESA and how can I be a part of it

    Hi,
Can you guide me to resources so that I can have an indepth understanding of this. I am a Portal developer, and how can I see my career path in this.
    Regards,
    Harish

    Hi
Before you know about ESA, you should know the following things things .
<b>Enterprise:</b> this is Integration different branches of business. (eg integration SD,PP,MM etc into one )
<b>Service:</b> It is a new way of software solutions. we had function modules, Object oriented way such is Service.
In this concept we have two main objects:
    Service Providers and Consumers.
<b>Web Service :</b> Web services are self contained and self describing application functionalities which can be processed through internet standards.
    EG : Google
         Product Availability check
         Order Status check
Now you can Definitely understand what is ESA :
    <b>SOA :</b> Sevice Oriented Architecture
    <b>ESA</b>(Enterprice Service Architecture) :
Web Services which provide business Functionality
Have enterprise quality in scalability, robustness, security, manageability, supportability,
If you want to be familiar with ESA. you go for <b>MVC</b>(Model View Controller concept and Webdynpros) and then registering and deploying service is the last step it is very easy
    Good Luck.

  • What is an .acv file and how do you use it in PS?

I downloaded a PDF about using curve adjustments to compensate for evaluating prints under 3500K SoLux halogen lighting relative to using a monitor calibrated to 5000K for editing. (by John Paul Caponigro). Along with the download came a file named "correctforhalogen.acv" but there is no mention of it in the PDF.
I know this file has something to do with doing a quick curves adjustment for color correction, but it doesn't appear to be an actions file. Does anyone know what .acv files are exactly and how you implement them in PS? Thanks.

    Thanks Wade.
That did the trick, once I figured out the missing step. For other folks interested, to use an .acv file to adjust a curve:
Open the Curves Adjustment Panel > Panel Options drop-down menu > Load Curves Preset... > find & select the .acv file (on hard drive) in the "LOAD" window > click LOAD. The adjustment in the .acv file will be applied to the image and appear in the curves graph of the Curves Adjustment Panel. Slick.
Apparently, moving the .acv file to the "Curves" folder in the "Presets" folder allows this curve adjustment to be a permanent preset choice. It can then be found under the Curves Panel preset drop-down menu. Just look for the original .acv file's name in the list.

  • What is the luma key  and how is it used in PE4?

How do I used this effect?
    Thank you

Are you talking about the setting on the track matte?
The alpha setting bases transparency on the whiteness of the selected layer.
The luma setting bases transparency on the red, green and blue brightness of the selected layer.
It's easier to demonstrate that explain. I suggest you experiment, using multi-colored clip to create your track matte.

  • What is the "Bookmarks Bar" and how do I use it?

I've been all over my iPad user guide and can find zero information about the "bookmarks bar" except how to make it appear and disappear.  I am now able to make a blank area near the top of the Safari screen appear and disappear - GREAT!!!!  Information as to what this area may contain, how to place and remove items from it, etc is NOWHERE!  If there is anyone out there that uses this feature, please explain what it is and if you find it useful.
In windows internet explorer, there is a "favorites bar" near the top of the screen where I can place the icons for my most used favorites.  Instead of opening a favorites menu and scrolling through it to find what I want, I just click the icon that is always present at the top of the internet explorer page - really useful.  I imagine that "bookmarks bar" is a similar feature in Safari but it's completely ignored in the iPad user guide.
Thanks for any help you can give.
              - Jim

    Thanks Skydiver,
This was easy and does exactly what I thought it would do!  What threw me off was the menu that pops up when you go to save a page as a bookmark.  The menu lists 6 choices:  Add bookmark; Add to reading list; Add to home screen; mail link to this page; Tweet; and Print.  Notice there is no choice to "add to bookmarks bar".   You have to select "add bookmark" and then within the next process box you have the option to specify an alternative to bookmark.  When you look for the alternatives, "bookmarks bar" shows up.  Not exactly obvious, is it?
It's almost like they don't don't want you to use it.  This is absolutely OBTUSE!
    Thanks again, Skydivier!

  • What is a client certificate and how do I use it?

I am trying to pay a traffic fine on a municipal website. I keep getting a drop-down box saying the site requires a client certificate to verify my identity. I am given a choice of two certificates, both of which are listed as valid. However, when I select one and click "continue," the same box comes up again (no matter which one i select). This happens repeatedly. I have triend this on both my iMac (less than a year old) and my macBook Air (less than two years old), and the same thing happens on both I just want to pay my traffic ticket! Why won't it accept my selected certificate? Do I need to create a new one, and if so, how do I do that? And what is a cient certificate anyway?

Same here. Does my solution help you, as well? However, in you case, I double-check with the site administrator if he uses client authentication intentionally at all.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
That's exactly what you need. A Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter and a HDMI cable. See > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4241?viewlocale=en_US
This is the only way to view a video on the TV. After connecting your MacBook Air to the TV, image on your TV should show immediately. Then, press Command and F1 keys to mirror your MacBook Air display, and open the video

I've been sent a scan of a document as an attachment. Clicking on it, I get the message, "Pixel aspect ration correction is for preview purposes only. Turn it off for maximum image quality." What is pixel aspect ration and how do I turn it off?

It's "aspect ratio", not aspect "ration".
It's what determines whether you have square pixels ("normal") or, if rectangular pixels, what the aspect ratio (width : length)  of that rectangle is.
It's explained in the Help files.  I cannot go into more detail because you have neglected to provide information about your platform and exact version of Photoshop.
