What exactly is in that MobileSync folder?

Hi all,
I have been attempting to clear up some of that mysterious "other" that's taking up a large chunk of my MBP's storage. Based on this link, http://appletoolbox.com/2014/02/mac-os-x-what-is-other-storage-and-how-to-remove /, I found that I've got ~16gb hanging around in the MobileSync folder. I'd like to know what I'm getting rid of before I actually delete it all. Anyone know?
Thanks for any help!

The MobileSync folder usually contains iPhone, iPad and iPod touch backups made with iTunes, so if you do not need them and they do not have any data you may need, you can remove them. To do that, open iTunes and go to iTunes menu (in the menu bar) -> Preferences -> Devices.

  • Data Manager - what exactly is/does that?!

    Hi Specialists,
while checking my BW query times (using the technical content / statistics) I realized that the absolutely majority of time is spent for the "data manager".
So the next question was: What's the "data manager"? What is its function and how can I get more detailed information about the time-usage. How can I reduce the time needed in the "data manager"-step.
Could you please gimme some hints or links about that topic?
Searching the help.sap.com and the sdn (using the keywords "performance" and "data manager") didn't bring me far.

The Data Manager step in BI Statistics or an RSRT trace represents the database read time from your infoprovider.  There are a number of ways you can improve this performance step (search for OLAP caching, aggregates, or BI Accelerator).

  • What exactly is being synced in Mail?

In System Preferences>.Mac>Sync there is a checkbox for Mail, another one for Mail Settings (or so, I can't check because I have a keychain error that does not allow me to get to the Sync page). Can anyone tell me what exactly it is, that is being synced??? I understand that the mail (i.e messages) itself are being synced between Macs in a different way.
Thanks for any light (or any pointers) you can throw onto this difficult subject.
    Thanks in advance.

I take this question off the forum, although it is not answered.

  • I don't have a Mobilesync folder

Hi! I recently got an iPad mini. I'd like to delete the Mobilesync folder on my Macbook because the iPad takes so much space.
I know Mobilesync is supposed to be under the "Application Support" folder but Mobilesync wasn't there when I checked out the Application Support of my laptop.
    Help, please! Thanks in advance!

No you don't want to delete the MobileSync folder because that is where your backup is stored.
You probably have way more junk on your Mac than that MobileSync folder accounts for in storage capacity anyway. Get an external drive and copy some of your infrequently used files onto the external drive and leave the MobileSync folder in place.
If you insist, this is where the folder should be.
iTunes places the backup files in the following places:
    Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/

  • What exactly happens when you cancel and resubscribe?

Hi all. I have an extremely simple question -- in fact, I think I already know the answer, I just want a little reassurance. Unfortunately, Adobe has absolutely embarrassingly abysmal customer service to complement some pretty great products. Honestly -- I've spoken to three people by phone who barely speak English and who sound like they're in the midst of a wind tunnel. Went online to chat, and the guy didn't understand my exceedingly simple question. I said the question was about cancellation; he attempted to transfer me to tech support. I told him I'd been on the phone three times with no success. He asked me if I wanted to talk to someone on the phone. Christ's sake, Adobe. Clean that mess up, it's shameful.
Anyway, all I want to know is what exactly happens if I cancel a single-app Creative Cloud membership, and then resubscribe shortly after? I currently have a month-to-month subscription to Premiere CC. My payment is due on the 4th, but I'm broke. So I assume I have to cancel. However, I plan on resubscribing about a week later, once I have some money.
So are my projects in any way, shape or form affected? Will Premiere CC simply stop me from accessing the program until I pay up and then re-grant access when I resubscribe? I mean, what exactly happens?
That's all I want to know. I'm in the middle of editing two large projects, so I'm just looking for some simple peace of mind. Thanks in advance.

    Hi there!
Thank you for sharing your comments regarding our customer support. Your comments help Adobe guide ongoing efforts to improve our policies, and services.
If you decide to cancel your membership, the products will revert to the trial version and the product will be accessible for the remaining days of the trial.
Would you like me to cancel the membership?
    Thanks.
    Arnaud.

  • What exactly ARE the .pkg files that collect in the 'Receipts' folder?

    Hi there all.
Those .pkg files that collect in HDD>Library>Receipts. What exactly ARE these packages for? How do they tie in with Disk Utility's 'Repair permissions' option? Why do we need to keep them?
It's all Unix to me ;0)

I used to delete .pkg files after I'd installed an application. I thought i was just the electronic equivalent of throwing away the empty box after I'd bought something.
The "cardboard box" icon encouraged me to think that.
Then someone said you should never throw away those.pkg files.
    So I stopped.
But the only thing that has ever happened is that during permissions repair, I get a few lines here and there that say "could not repair permissions".
I have experienced no other problems of any kind over about the last 2 years. All applications running normally, nothing weird happening.

  • What exactly is un-needed from the Library folder?

I just want to know what exactly is ok to delete and what is not ok to delete from my Library folder. Many things take up a lot of disk space. I know I can delete the printer drivers (2GB)... but I don't know what other stuff is unnecessary. I'm not too skilled when it comes to this kind of stuff so please help me out. I want to clear out as much un-needed stuff as possible. Here are the biggest folders in my Library folder.
    - Application Support folder (3.94GB) [required or not?]
    - Audio folder (2.49GB) [required or not?]
    - Documentation (355.9MB) [required or not?]
    - Receipts (125.4MB) [required or not?]
    Thank you!

I personally would not start with the Library folder to start trying to make space, unless you really know what you use. Application Support for example, depends on what applications you use or don't use.
Having said that, you can try this page:

I've heard others using Monolingual (which they mention) to remove unneccessary language packs with no problem, I'm keeping all mine just in case .

  • HT4859 when you go to do this it say that your iPod or whichever device will no longer be backed up to the computer it is currently backed up to, what exactly does that mean? Will i not be able to sync my iPod from that computer?

when you go to do this it say that your iPod or whichever device will no longer be backed up to the computer it is currently backed up to, what exactly does that mean? Will i not be able to sync my iPod from that computer? Please help me and answer either or both question detailed thanks

Normally when you sync your device it is automatically backed up to your computer as the first step in the sync process.  When you choose to start backing up your device to iCloud, iTunes stops automatically backing it up on your computer when you sync.  That's what the message is telling your; that you are now backing up to iCloud and not to your computer each time you sync.  You can still manually back up to your computer any time you want by going to the Summary tab and clicking on Back Up Now under Manually Back Up and Restore.
You can still sync your device as you did before, it just will no longer back up automatically when you do.

  • My iPhone 4s was stolen this weekend and I did the Remote Lock.  What exactly does that do?  Also, if i do the Remote Wipe will that erase all of my data and impede anyone from ever using the phone?

My iPhone 4s was stolen this weekend and I did the Remote Lock.  What exactly does that do?  Also, if i do the Remote Wipe will that erase all of my data and impede anyone from ever using the phone?

The remote lock locks the iphone with a passcode that you set. By remote wiping the device it will simply restore it and clear it of all its data, but by doing this it will prevent you tracking it and communicating with it (e.g. remote locking it) in the future

  • HT1535 What exactly is stored under "OTHER" on your iPhone that you only see when it's connected to iTunes?

What exactly is stored under "OTHER" on your iPhone that you only see when it's connected to iTunes?

Ok, here is how the story have ended for my iPhone 4S.
I took the phone to the genius bar 500-km far from my town. And they told me to wait 20 mins and then they asked what's wrong with the phone. They first thought the battery is dead. But then they changed the battery with a sure-it's-working-battery. But no luck. And told me that "logic board" has gone (why? -no explanation. it just happens).
And then they checked the warranty and noticed that it was expired 29 days ago (the phone was bought from Chicago and I'm in Europe now). Since it's expired, I'm told that it can't be replaced with no cost. I should pay 200 Euros to get a "new" iPhone 4S (you know what is "new" means, refurbished). Or I could buy a brand-new-iPhone5 for 600 Euros.
I'm not rich person and I decided to go with the refurbished one. So, as summary,
    - 13 months iPhone is dead. (~500$)
    - a refusrbished phone with 3 months of warranty (200 Euro)
    - Lost data (I admit that this is my fault not to care about the backup but after phone is dead, I didn't have any way to save data).
I can say that, if you have too much money, yes, Apple products are worth to buy.

  • I sended my iphone for repair, and im being sent a replacement phone what exactly does that mean?

I sended my iphone for repair, and im being sent a replacement phone what exactly does that mean?

It means you will get a refurbished iPhone in exchange for the faulty one you sent in.

  • Do I still need the MobileSync folder now that my backups are in iCloud?

Now that my iPad and iPhone back up to iCloud and not iTunes do I still need the very large device backups that live in the MobileSync folder? My folder is about 10GB and on my 256GB MacBook Air I'd like to reclaim that space if possible.
Any expertise is appreciated! I'll try moving the files to my external and seeing if anything goes horribly wrong.
    Best, Alex

    Update
I copied my mobile device backups to an external drive then deleted them from the iTunes device preference panel. Then I sync'd (iTunes Wi-Fi sync) my iPhone - no new backup was created!
Looks like my theory was correct and I was able to reclaim that 10GB of drive space.

  • Third Party Applications? What exactly are they?

    Right,
I've read alot about the Blue Screen that appears when Upgrading to OSX Leopard. I am intending on upgrading tomorrow when my external hard drive arrives so I can Clone my 10.4.11 onto the external hard drive and upgrade the cloned version first but would like to know if I can check in advance for any of these' Third party App's'? and what exactly are they?
    Regards,

A third party application is anything not made by Apple. It can also include products that Apple purchased fairly recently (some of those "Pro" apps) that weren't coded to Apple's specfications and haven't been well tested. Apple doesn't and shouldn't test their software with third party applications. It isn't their job to test other people's software. They probably make exceptions for things like Office and Photoshop, but that is a short list.
Most third party applications will be fine. The ones you have to worry about are those that ask for your password when you install them. They can then install any sort of incompatible software.
After you clone your hard drive, verify that you can boot from the external drive and all your data is there. If so, don't upgrade the external drive. Boot using the 10.5 DVD and immediately run Disk Utility and re-partition your internal hard drive to wipe it out completely. Then install Leopard. Do not use Migration Assistant. Re-install all your 3rd party applications that are 10.5 compatible. Be very careful about copying over from backup anything in a Library/Preferences folder. You can copy any preference file from a third party application back over - those are safe. Anything from Apple may have been upgraded. Only copy over the Apple files that you absolutely have to, such as your Mail folder and Address book file, for example.
It sounds like a lot of work but it will only take a couple of hours.

  • How can i find out what the modification history is of  folder

What I mean is that I had a folder deleted out of another folder and I'm trying to find out when this might have happened and how. I'm pretty certain that it's not a hidden script or macro or virus or some other malicious means. I figure it's just an Id10T error but I'm trying to figure out when I might have done it. Also, if anyone could point me in the direction of something that looks for hidden processes, programs, etc. That'd be awesome. I might not have used the correct ones. I've tried: OS X Rootkit Hunter, ClamXav, and a few others.
    thanks,
    Mark

Looking for malware at this point is not fruitful, especially if you've already tried ClamXav.  This is not a malware problem.  See my Mac Virus Guide*.
As to finding out when it happened, unfortunately there's no log of every little folder modification.  (Or perhaps I should say fortunately, since it would be a major drag on the performance of the system.)  As you say, it's probably just user error (not "idiot error" since anyone can make such a mistake) and you'll never know exactly what happened.  Make sure that you have a good set of backups so you can recover from such situations in the future.
