What exactly is "My iTunes"?

Just wondering, I remember a while ago when I started up iTunes for the first time, it asked me if I wanted to enable "My iTunes". I said no because I didn't know what it was, this was some months ago.
Just wondering what "My iTunes" is?

You can set up widgets or RSS feeds for the music you have purchased or rated on iTunes. You can then add them to your blog or facebook or whatever you choose.
If you click on your name in iTunes when you are looking at the store and then click Manage My iTunes you can get the code for a few different things.

  • What exactly does the iTunes iPhone 5S "back-up to computer" back-up?

I got a new iPhone that I want to restore from a back-up of my old iPhone. I was wondering exactly what things are "backed-up" with the iTunes back-up to the computer?
Does it back-up contacts, pictures, videos, game saved-data, app settings, and iPhone settings? Everything maybe?

Essentially everything other than media and the apps themselves. See Create and delete iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch backups in iTunes - Apple Support for details.

What exactly is stored under "OTHER" on your iPhone that you only see when it's connected to iTunes?

Ok, here is how the story have ended for my iPhone 4S.
I took the phone to the genius bar 500-km far from my town. And they told me to wait 20 mins and then they asked what's wrong with the phone. They first thought the battery is dead. But then they changed the battery with a sure-it's-working-battery. But no luck. And told me that "logic board" has gone (why? -no explanation. it just happens).
And then they checked the warranty and noticed that it was expired 29 days ago (the phone was bought from Chicago and I'm in Europe now). Since it's expired, I'm told that it can't be replaced with no cost. I should pay 200 Euros to get a "new" iPhone 4S (you know what is "new" means, refurbished). Or I could buy a brand-new-iPhone5 for 600 Euros.
I'm not rich person and I decided to go with the refurbished one. So, as summary,
    - 13 months iPhone is dead. (~500$)
    - a refusrbished phone with 3 months of warranty (200 Euro)
    - Lost data (I admit that this is my fault not to care about the backup but after phone is dead, I didn't have any way to save data).
I can say that, if you have too much money, yes, Apple products are worth to buy.

If you have AppleCare and/or iPod Nano is still under warranty, give them a call.  If not, take the computer to your local Apple Store or AASP.  The staff will tell you what is wrong w/it and let you know if it can be fixed after it is examined.

  • HT4859 when you go to do this it say that your iPod or whichever device will no longer be backed up to the computer it is currently backed up to, what exactly does that mean? Will i not be able to sync my iPod from that computer?

when you go to do this it say that your iPod or whichever device will no longer be backed up to the computer it is currently backed up to, what exactly does that mean? Will i not be able to sync my iPod from that computer? Please help me and answer either or both question detailed thanks

Normally when you sync your device it is automatically backed up to your computer as the first step in the sync process.  When you choose to start backing up your device to iCloud, iTunes stops automatically backing it up on your computer when you sync.  That's what the message is telling your; that you are now backing up to iCloud and not to your computer each time you sync.  You can still manually back up to your computer any time you want by going to the Summary tab and clicking on Back Up Now under Manually Back Up and Restore.
You can still sync your device as you did before, it just will no longer back up automatically when you do.

  • What the heck is iTunes uploading?

After a frustrating week trying to use iTunes match, I've finally gotten a good chunk of my library in the cloud. The problem is the remaining 10 gigs: all live DJ sets that are roughly 2 hours long. They hover around 180 mb each, so under the limit.
Problem is, I cannot get these to upload at all. I got lucky with one, and another matched, but the rest have been a boondoggle. I've tried many things, and as an experiment I decided to remove all of them from my library, add JUST ONE back into my iTunes, and then keep Activity Monitor open to see what exactly is happening.
And this is what I get: I added back in a file that is 189 mb large. I started the transfer about two hours ago. With Activity Monitor open and set to the Netowrk tab, I originally had "Data sent: 18.38 gb". I verified that I didn't have any thing else really doing any uploads (every once and a while I'd see "Data sent/sec" spike to 1k/second or so, so I figured it was probably just Mail checking my inbox). Now it's two hours later, Data sent/sec has ranged from 40k/sec to 90k/sec (darn ADSL's slow upload speeds). But here's the kicker, I see "Data sent: 18.69 gb"
Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but a 189 mb file added to 18.38 gb should equal around 18.58 gb. Which means that iTunes has magically uploaded an additional 100 mb or so of data. Even considering the fact that, since this is an mp3, it'd get re-encoded into an AAC, I find it very unlikely that we're talking about a 50% decrease in compression efficiency, and keep in mind that the upload STILL ISN'T FINISHED. In fact, as I write this, it's now at 18.73 gb data sent and no sign of stopping.
Does anyone know what exactly is happening here? This mirrors my experiences with my first few attempts at uploading these sets: 10 gigs at once, but 6 gigs of uploading later, not a single one had finished. WHAT THE HECK IS ITUNES MATCH DOING??? I'm seriously considering canceling and seeing if I can get my money back, since I mainly cared about being able to stream these sets onto my iPad.

Uh just to update, at around 18.77 gb data sent, data has stopped being uploaded from iTunes. Except it's still not done "uploading" the one song. So now I guess it's officially hung.  WHAT'S HAPPENING???

  • What exactly are the updates good for on an ipod

I ask because mine is windows format, and im having trouble transferring all the metadata off my ipod with senuti to a back up so that i can reformat the ipod to mac and then sync in my senuti backed up library. I was wondering if anyone knows what exactly are the updates that you get. my ipod is 1.2 5thgen.
If i were to have the latest update would i be able to see album cover art view when the ipod is plugged into itunes? I noticed that i can see that view in library mode but not in ipod mode. (my pod isnt synced)...
so what are these updates good for?

    hey thanks for your reply.
I do have it set to manual and i can see the art on the ipod by itself, but even with manual transfer itunes wont let me view the artwork modes unless i am playing off my computers library (which doesn't have the songs on my ipod on it). I called apple earlier today and some tech support guy claimed that itunes does not support this feature. Is this correct? can anyone out there see artwork modes on an unsynced ipod through itunes?

  • How do you display exact duplicates in Itunes 11. It is now missung under the file?

How do you display exact duplicates in Itunes 11. It is now missung under the file?

Right-click on this direct link to ExactDuplicates and "download" or "save link as..." to a location of your choice. Double-click to the file to run it. You should get something a bit like this:
If your system will allow it my script will produce a progress bar so you can see what is going on, otherwise you will have to be patient, it will carry on working in the background.
After scanning for duplicates it then adds them to a new playlist. For large libraries this process can be quite slow. (Very slow if you also have old hardware like me.)
Finally you'll get a results window like this (from a different test run, as I didn't have time for the full one to finish when I was grabbing screenshots).
You can use shift-delete to remove selected tracks from the library as well as the playlist. Leave at least one track behind from each repeated group and don't send anything to the recycle bin unless you are sure you have more than one physical copy.
The DeDuper script has several advantages over cleaning by hand. Automating the process allows preservation & amalgamation of ratings, play counts, playlist membership, etc. See this thread for more detail.

  • What exactly is "other" in the AppleTV capacity bar

    Hi all,
If I click on the AppleTV device in itunes, I notice it has the following categories in the capacity bar:
    * video
    * audio
    * photos
    * other
    * free space
What exactly is included in the "other" category? I assume that podcasts may be in there. The reason I ask is that my "other" category seems to be growing (currently 4.56Gb out of 32.85Gb capacity, which is significant). Is there anything I can do to control the size of this?
    Many thanks in advance.

Likely the case. You have to remember podcasts are provided by 3rd parties and by there very nature some podcasts are amateur productions or are not necessarily aimed at itunes specifically. There is a chance that some podcasts, whilst playing just fine, don't actually meet the specs from the tv prospective and as such even when completely downloaded don't properly get moved to the appropriate category.
I've just downloaded the 'Hidden Universe' podcasts, I watched the 'other' category increase in size as more of the podcast downloaded, once complete the 'other' reset to its original value and 'video' increased appropriately.

  • Sync - merge - what EXACTLY do these terms mean?

Howdy. I recently plunged into the iPhone world & I'm LOVING IT!!!!!!
So, what exactly does SYNC & MERGE mean? what will be the final results?
with my iPod shuffle, I'm able to "auto fill" from a folder of pre-selected podcasts in iTunes. After listening to the iPod for awhile, I reconnect the iPod to iTunes (on the computer) & the podcasts in iTunes are updated as with actions taken on the iPod. for example, iTunes on the computer will indicate wether or not I listened to these particular podcasts on the iPod or not, & will also remember where I left off. So it seems that the iPod updates iTunes on the computer.
But, ... this does NOT seem to be the same with the iPhone. It seems like when I plug in my iPhone to the computer & "sync", iTunes isn't updated as to what I already watched on the iPhone, like the iPod did. In order to update iTunes with what i already watched on the iPhone, I need to manually delete the vidcasts from the iTunes on the computer, which seems like a step back from my little iPod shuffle.
ALSO: if I change contact information on my iPhone, will this updated info be lost when I connect the iPhone to the Computer?
So what exactly does SYNC & MERG mean?
It seems that the iPhone reacts differently for different media. I'm very confused & I wish there was a place to understand all this without the generic "sync" word being used without explanation. does sync mean replace, update, ... ????
I've been searching around the net for this info for awhile, but all I find is these terms, without sufficient information as to what exactly MERGE & SYNC actually do.
Can someone suggest some place that explains this in the detail I'm looking for?
    Thanks so much.
    Jesse Luke

Under the Podcasts tab for your iPhone sync preferences, there are various options. I have sync all unplayed episodes of selected podcasts to be transferred to my iPhone. If I listen to an podcast on my iPhone in it's entirety, the podcast will be removed from my iPhone when syncing with iTunes.
The iPhone includes a sync process - some of the data included with the sync process is a one way transfer process only from your computer to your iPhone such as iTunes music, and the same for selected photos to be transferred from your computer to your iPhone.
The sync process for contact info, calendar events, and Safari bookmarks with the supported applications on your computer is a bidirectional or true sync process. When syncing an iPhone for contact info the first time with a supported application on your computer that includes contact info, you will be provided a merge prompt if your iPhone includes any contact info that was manually entered in your iPhone's address book. This will merge the contact info between the two. After the first sync or merge for this data, it will be a bidirectional or true sync process. Change info for a contact on your iPhone, and the info will be changed for the contact info with the supported address book on your computer when followed by a sync, and vice-versa. Add a new contact with the supported address book on your computer, and the new contact will be transferred to your iPhone's address book during the next sync, and vice versa. The same applies to calendar events when syncing with a supported calendar app on your computer.

  • What exactly does Restore do?

Forgive me if this has been covered before, but I did search and didn't find my specific answers.
I synced my bookmarks with my Safari browser on my PC. All is good, except that the sync also copied the default bookmark folders "bookmark bar" and "bookmarks", which are both empty and redundant on my Touch. They are listed 2nd and 3rd on the Touch bookmarks list, taking up valuable space! But, since they're default folders, I can not delete them, just like the "History" folder on the Touch.
Anyway, I've read that the only way to remove them is to restore my iPod, and never sync bookmarks from Safari again. (IMHO it seems completely crazy that syncing from one Safari to another would be so problematic!)
So, what exactly does Restore do? I know it resets the ipod to factory settings, but what happens to all my bookmarks and webclippings? Is there anyway to back those up and edit my bookmarks manually to remove the two default folders?? Because if not, it seems that this wouldn't be a fix at all, instead just a big ol pain in the arse. This is a very annoying bug and I hope it is fixed in the next update. :/
    Any help is very appreciated!

Assuming you're using Windows (going by your system specs)...if you have bookmarks you need to preserve only for the touch, export all your current Internet Explorer (IE) bookmarks/favorites to a file and back that up. Then delete ALL bookmarks in IE & sync your bookmarks only using iTunes (IE has to be open for the bookmark sync to work properly). Your bookmarks will sync with IE and only the ones that were on your touch should be in your current IE bookmarks. Now export those bookmarks to a different file. When you want to restore the touch and it's bookmarks, sync the touch and select the option to over-write/replace the bookmarks on the touch. To get your Windows IE bookmarks back, restore from the first backup file you made. Note that the sort order after importing the bookmarks back into IE will be alphabetical rather than by when the bookmark was added. I don't think there's any getting around that.
As far as deleting the default folders you're looking to get rid of, I don't believe that it's currently possible.

  • What exactly means "Restore iPhone"

I am using the iPhone 4s with iOS 7.1.2 and I want to restore it. But what it exactly means? Now the lates available iOS is 8.1.1. I bought my iPhone with iOS 7.0.4.
I want to know what exactly happends when I "restore my iPhone" by iTunes. It will restore my iPhone to iOS 7.1.2 - this one which I currently use. Or it will restore my device to previos version of software (7.0.4)? Or it "restore" my device and also update it to 8.1.1?
Please tell me what will happens. I'm asking because I won't to update my device and also don't back to previous soft.
    Best Regards,
    Pawel

When you restore, your device is erased and the latest version of iOS will always be installed (currently 8.1, not 8.1.1). At the end of restoring, you'll be prompted to load your last backup, or not load a backup (i.e. starting fresh). After that, if  you chose to load your backup then all your apps, music, videos, etc. will be re-loaded .... it may take awhile, so give it time and don't unplug or interrupt the process.  BEFORE you restore, make sure you initiate a backup to iTunes (not iCloud) and that is normally offered right when you start the restore process -- be sure to do that if you want to recover your settings, accounts, app data, etc.

  • What exactly do Aperture previews do?

Sorry, I'm sure this has been asked a lot but I can't find a topic that outright explains it. Seems most everyone knows what it is but I'm just lost on it. So what exactly is the point of creating previews? It sounds like they're used to display images on other devices such as Apple TV, iPad, etc. I have a 1440p monitor, so why does it recommend 2560x2560? Why does my monitor need to access a preview instead of just accessing the photo itself? And which setting should I use? I access photos on my iPad Mini Retina, Apple TV on a 60'' 1080p HDTV, and my 1440p  27'' external monitor. I don't need max detail on the iPad or Apple TV but I don't want them to look like ****, either. If previews directly affect my external monitor, I guess I'll have to go with the highest setting but I don't want to do that because it'll take up so much room on my iPad, I would assume.

Preview are used for two purposes:
Sharing with iTunes for syncing to your devices, and sharing with the Media browser, to be used in other applications, like Keynote, Pages, Mail, ... .
For browsing your Aperture library, if your original image files are offline - if you are using a referenced library, with the original image files on another external drive.
Pick the highest preview resolution, that wll be necessary for either of this purposes - to the size of the largest monitor you are actually using.
Why does my monitor need to access a preview instead of just accessing the photo itself? And which setting should I use? I access photos on my iPad Mini Retina, Apple TV on a 60'' 1080p HDTV, and my 1440p  27'' external monitor.
In Aperture itself you do not need the previews. Aperture will render the displayed image from the original image file and apply all adjustments. But other applicationsneed a preview with the adjustments applied, since they cannot reproduce the image processing.

  • What exactly did I Migrate??

    Hi,
I wanted to copy only a few things from my old Mac to my new MacBookPro. So I started Migration Assistant, thinking I could select individual files and folders. Mainly I wanted to copy my iTunes Library, plus a few random other folders in my user account.
So I went through the steps, assuming (stupid, I know I should never assume) that I could back out at some point if it didn;t seem to be doing what I wanted. So I turned off the checks for User Accounts, Applications, Settings, and left on Other Files and Folders. I thought i would then get to choose what those would be. Then it copied things.
Now, my question is - what exactly did I copy, where is it, can i delete it? There appears to only be new files at the root, 'User Guides and Information (from old Mac)' and 'var (from old Mac)'.
Also. Can you please confirm that Migration Assistant only COPIED filed from my old machine, it didn't delete anything off the old machine, did it??
Any answers would be appreciated. And I'm pleading - please don't chastise me for doing something without researching it first, I'm already feeling incredibly dumb
    Thanks.

The "Other Files and Folders" option of Migration Assistant copies items at the root level of the HD that are not in the root level System, Library, Applications, Users, or hidden system domain folders at the root level of the HD -- IOW, things that none of the other migration options would otherwise touch.
For example, say you created a disk image (dmg) file & stored it at the root level of the HD, along side of System, Library, etc. Migration Assistant would not normally copy this file over to the new Mac's HD so you could use the "Other Files and Folders" option to do this.
The same would be true for example for the "User Guides and Information" alias normally present on new Macs that points to the /Library/Documentation/User Guides And Information folder containing that Mac's User Guide pdf & such. If I understand you correctly, this alias file was renamed "User Guides and Information (from old Mac)," I'm guessing because the new Mac has its own alias file of the same name.
I'm not sure why you have a "var (from old Mac)" folder (assuming it is a folder & not an alias or regular file) migrated as well. The /private/var folder is one of the hidden system domain ones & I would not expect Migration Assistant to migrate it in its entirety with any migration option, although selected items in it might be migrated as part of the other options.
