What exactly should I clone/ backup for a bootable functional external HD?

I want to do two things with an external hard drive: 1) in one partition, clone the system & applications part of my computer; 2) in the other partition, keep my NORMALLY USED iTunes Library plus backups of documents and whatever else.
The question:
**what should I actually clone to the first partition?**
Will it work if I just clone the Applications and System folders? Within that partition, I just want the working parts of the system--Tiger and all my applications--and I want that as a bootable clone, but without all the disk-devouring music and photo libraries. (Those are backed up elsewhere.)
If one day my laptop's HD dies (again!), I want to just plug in the external HD, clone that first partition over, and see everything ready to use, but without the data. Will that work?
(Background: laptop HD is 80GB and uncomfortably full, mainly because of a 30GB+ music library; external LaCie HD is 80GB. I don't want to clone the complete HD because I want to use the LaCie to boost my functional HD space. Yeah, I should have bought a bigger external HD, oh well.)
It suddenly occurs to me it's rather pathetic to be writing this on Christmas Day. Oh well. It's not much of an occasion in Taiwan.

Oops... I was totally wrong about what the Library actually is. I thought it contained stuff that's actually within "Users".
SuperDuper is definitely what I wanted. I was having problems because I was trying to make a "bottom-up" collection of files: compiling all the relevant material, and that leads to all kinds of hidden files and stuff that I don't know to add. SuperDuper does it in a top down way: I can select a script to copy everything, and then adjust the script so the Picture folder is NOT copied. Problem solved, I think. (One page in the SuperDuper manual explains how to do this, but unfortunately my first scan of the manual missed that section!)
I've tried booting from the Picture/Movie/Music less external HD partition, and it works exactly as I wanted: the system's there but there are none of the memory-hogging collections.
Extra bonus is that I've now set this script up to clone the System and Applications components every two weeks.
Note that you CANNOT tailor things this way with the free version of SuperDuper; you have to pay for the license.
What I've got now: 80GB external HD has a 30GB partition with everything cloned (twice a month) EXCEPT for the Pictures, Movies, and Music folders. A 45GB partition currently has the music library (at about 30GB) and will probably collect other backups. And my laptop hard drive (nonpartitioned) now has 40GB of free space, to which in a few days (once I'm sure everything's working smoothly) I'll add about 10GB worth of burnt photo libraries.
I'm still a bit confused about "System" terminology: the System Folder with the OS, vs the System Disk, which I suppose is everything all together. However, that doesn't really matter now.
Thanks for everyone's help.

I send my iPhone to apple because my standby button doesn´t fit, what exactly should i send to apple? earphones and charging cable too?

No! All Apple needs is your actual phone. Do not send the box or anything else as they will throw it away and you won't get anything back except for a phone! Do not send the sim card either and make sure you backed it up!

  • What is the best online backup for OS 10.5.8? And if I Reinstall OS will I have problems?

My old Mac has had the flashing question mark file on a blue screen. I waited a couple days, turned it back on and it worked. However, in between that time I went and bought a new Macbook Air. I am relieved to have all of my pics and docs back. I need a good online backup. I downloaded BackBlaze Backup but it is taking forever and I am not sure if it's the best choice.
My plan is to backup all of my files and then wipe my computer clean with the install disks and give my computer to my little sister. So, my question is two fold; which is best online backup and will I have any issues wiping clean the computer and doing a reinstall? For example, will all the updates still be available? What is the best thing for me to do?
    Thank you : )

Just understand it gets pretty expensive after you exceed the free space. 2-5 GBs isn't much space.
    Basic Backup
For some people Time Machine will be more than adequate. Time Machine is part of OS X. There are two components:
    1. A Time Machine preferences panel as part of System Preferences;
    2. A Time Machine application located in the Applications folder. It is
used to manage backups and to restore backups. Time Machine
requires a backup drive that is at least twice the capacity of the
         drive being backed up.
    3. Time Machine requires a backup drive that is at least double the
capacity of the drive(s) it backs up.
Alternatively, get an external drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
      1. Carbon Copy Cloner
      2. Get Backup
      3. Deja Vu
      4. SuperDuper!
      5. Synk Pro
      6. Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on backup and restore.  Also read How to Back Up and Restore Your Files. For help with using Time Machine visit Pondini's Time Machine FAQ for help with all things Time Machine.
Although you can buy a complete external drive system, you can also put one together if you are so inclined.  It's relatively easy and only requires a Phillips head screwdriver (typically.)  You can purchase hard drives separately.  This gives you an opportunity to shop for the best prices on a hard drive of your choice.  Reliable brands include Seagate, Hitachi, Western Digital, Toshiba, and Fujitsu.  You can find reviews and benchmarks on many drives at Storage Review.
    Enclosures for FireWire and USB are readily available.  You can find only FireWire enclosures, only USB enclosures, and enclosures that feature multiple ports.  I would stress getting enclosures that use the Oxford chipsets especially for Firewire drives (911, 921, 922, for example.)  You can find enclosures at places such as;
      1. Cool Drives
      2. OWC
      3. WiebeTech
      4. Firewire Direct
      5. California Drives
      6. NewEgg
All you need do is remove a case cover, mount the hard drive in the enclosure and connect the cables, then re-attach the case cover.  Usually the only tool required is a small or medium Phillips screwdriver.

  • What exactly are the updates good for on an ipod

I ask because mine is windows format, and im having trouble transferring all the metadata off my ipod with senuti to a back up so that i can reformat the ipod to mac and then sync in my senuti backed up library. I was wondering if anyone knows what exactly are the updates that you get. my ipod is 1.2 5thgen.
If i were to have the latest update would i be able to see album cover art view when the ipod is plugged into itunes? I noticed that i can see that view in library mode but not in ipod mode. (my pod isnt synced)...
so what are these updates good for?

    hey thanks for your reply.
I do have it set to manual and i can see the art on the ipod by itself, but even with manual transfer itunes wont let me view the artwork modes unless i am playing off my computers library (which doesn't have the songs on my ipod on it). I called apple earlier today and some tech support guy claimed that itunes does not support this feature. Is this correct? can anyone out there see artwork modes on an unsynced ipod through itunes?

  • What exactly does the AppleCare cover for MacBook Pro with Retina Display?

I purchased the extended protection plan for my MacBook Pro with Retina Display 15" and my question is what exactly does it cover in what kind of situations (i.e. viruses, damaged ports, damaged charger, etc.)? I want to be able to take full advantage of the protection plan since it was a pretty big whole in my wallet.

AppleCare covers all the problems you have with your MacBook Pro with Retina display and the peripherals which came with it (your charger) if you have a hardware problem that you didn't cause. For example, after 2 or 3 years and 1000 charges, OS X says that your battery has to be replaced: in this case, you have to pay for the battery, because batteries have got a lifetime, and Unibody Macs batteries have got an average lifetime of about 1000 charges.
However, if the RAM gets damaged and you haven't done anything to cause it, you will get your computer repaired or replaced for free. AppleCare in a MacBook Pro with Retina display is very important, because near all the parts are soldered into the logic board and repairs are expensive

Can anybody tell me what is the technical design we can write for above finctional design.
    Thanks in advance.
    Thanks & Regards,

    Hi,
The functional design is very detailed and has covered almost the technical part as well. I dont think you need to add anything more. If you need to add anything then it would probably be the Selects statements. But i dont think they are required.
But once you collect the data in internal table, what should be done. Should it be sent to smartform/script or a report output should be displayed. Or are any tables to be updated. If so, then specify the same.
    Best regards,
    Prashant

  • What exactly should disabling data services do ?

When I disable data services, it completly disconnects my device (BB Curve 9300) from internet - even if WiFi connection is active, no application (Browser, Messages/emails,...) can connect to internet anymore. BIS also stops working (even though it was working over wifi before I disabled data services).
My expectation was disabling Data Services will only disable internet connection/data transfer via mobile network (GPRS, Edge, 3G,...) - the option to disable data services is in "Mobile Network Options" menu. But in reality it disables all data transfers, including WiFi.
    Is this intended behaviour ?

  • What exactly is the Verizon CD for

We received a CD when we signed up for DSL. I am just wondering exactly what the purpose of this disk is?

I got a CD when I first signed up for DSL.
It's software that walks you through the process of setting up your DSL link.
First, it walks you through putting supplied filters in line with all your regular telephone equipment.  This section uses video to make the whole process crystal clear even to a complete neophyte.  Verizon seems to have put in quite a bit of effort to try to get most new customers through this stage without having to call tech support.
The second stage involves plugging the DSL router into the rhe PC via an ethernet cable,  into the phone line via a phone patchcord, and into AC power.  These cables are supplied.  This stage also uses video.
The next stage is a line test.  The video is very limited during this stage.  The test extends to the modem that's built into the DSL router, the phone line itself, the modem at Verizon's end,  and the internet gateway also at Verizon's end.  It logs into the gateway using some kind of all purpose account, with a username like "newDSLUser"  (I forget the exact username).
The final stage involves setting up the user parameters like the accountname and password assigned to this user for internet access, and access to a home page supplied by one of Verizon's partners.  My CD often flamed out in the middle of this stage, but no matter.  It got far enough so I could use the service.
The video is OK in this stage, but it's a little less simplified that than the first stage.  Perhaps setting up an account is just more abstract than plugging in a filter.  Or perhaps they have ot keep changing it over time to stay in sync with their service.
Overall, it's a good intro to DSL, and most users should be able to get up and running with it without calling a tech.
You may have a different version of the CD.  Your mileage may vary.

  • What defects should I look out for on a new C2D MacBook?

    Hi all,
So, here's my Mac story. I've had macs for the past 4 years, I just like working on them when I have the option. When the new MacBook came out last Spring I immediately bought one, and then 3 returns laters, I got one that wasn't falling apart and was happy. Then the C2D came out, and I was antsy to upgrade. I know it was foolish but I talked myself into a MBP C2D. I got that, about 2 weeks ago and was very dissapointed in the display, grainy and all. So I talked to apple and they're taking it back. But here I am with no laptop again. SO I purchased a new C2D MacBook, and it arrives today.
So back to the question ... what defects with the new one should be on the look out for? It's difficult to figure out which MacBook people are talking about when they talk about their problems.
    Thanks for the help

To be honest, you shouldn't be looking for any defects. There were some problems with a small percentage of the original MacBooks which have since been resolved and should not appear on the new Core 2 models. Get your MacBook and enjoy it. If you discover something is not working the way you feel it should, address it then. To be on the look out for problems that you may have heard others having is only going to make you worry and probably think you have found a problem where none may exist.
