  • What external hard drive is compatible with Mountain Lion?

Mountain Lion is no longer recognizing the external hard drive I was using for Time Machine --
WD My Book Essential 3.0 WDBACW0020HBK.  What is a good external hard drive to use with Mountain Lion?

As Shootist007 said, go to /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.  Select the drive you want to reformat in the Disk Utility Sidebar and make sure it say's Format : Mac OS Extended (Journaled). If so, simply hit the Erase button. Once that's done go back to Time Machine and reselect it if needed.
If you continue to have problems with the drive, I've always used OWC drives with few issues.  Others use Lacie drives.

  • What external hard drives are compatible w/ lion, snow leopard and time machine?

I am looking to buy an external hard drive to back up all data on my Macbook Pro that is currently running Snow Leopard, then upgrading to Lion.  I want an external hard drive that is compatible with BOTH Snow Leopard (for use of creating a backup prior to my upgrade) and Lion (for daily use once I've upgraded). I also don't want to spend more than $100 if possible. Any suggestions?  Thanks!

There is currently a shortage of drives due to flooding in one of the countries in which they are manufactured.
Getting one for under $100 at this point might be difficult. You didn't mention how full your current hard drive is, but for Time Machine, you should plan on two to three times the data you currently have (or expect to have).
I looked through Newegg's selection and didn't see more than a couple 1TB drives for less than $100. I recently bought a 3TB drive for $150. They're in the $200-$300 range, now.
I always buy bare drives and put them in an enclosure I buy separately. All the name-brand, ready-to-use drives come with a bunch of software you don't need and some of their software causes problems.
I had some bad luck/bad customer service with Seagate, so I've been buying Western Digital. Though, my replacement drives from Seagate have been going fine.
I've used Icy Dock and MacAlly enclosures. Both have worked well. If you do decide to go that route, you must make sure the enclosure can support the size of drive you buy (both physical--2.5" or 3.5", and storage size--1TB, 2TB, 3TB). The controllers in the cases may not be able to handle a 3TB drive, for example.
No matter how you go, you have to decide what kind of interface you want to use. USB is cheaper, but Firewire is faster. Firewire 800 is even faster, but costs more. All of that depends on what ports you have on the computer. OS X doesn't currently support USB 3.

  • What external tape drives are compatible with sunblade 100s?

    hi,
    please, can anybody tell me:
    1. where i can find out whether or not a particular tape drive is compatible with my sunblade 100 workstation running solaris 9?
    2. do external tape drives usually connect to the workstation's serial port?
    3. what kind of specs/features should i be looking out for?
thanks in advance for your replies.

I would imagine you could use any tape drive with your sun blade... most are connected by either scsi or fiber channel... there could be some that are network controlled... not aware of any that are controlled by serial port...
GOOGLE is a wonderful thing... try it, you will like it...
compatibility is more concerned with which OS and program you want to use with the tape drive...
specs depend on what you are backing up... a single user would most likely only need a single drive... if you were a multi-national corp, then maybe you might contact Sun Sales...
maybe you should to some research yourself...

  • What external hard drives are compatable with new Ipad 4

What external hardrives are compatable with the new Ipad 4 connector

Not entirely sure what you are asking. According to this review (I haven't got one so I don't know for sure) then the wifi-enabled GoFlex Satellite drives can :
The device can stream basically all content supported by the iPad including videos (H.264 video, MPEG-4, and Motion-JPEG), audio (AAC, MP3, Audible (formats 2, 3, 4), Apple Lossless, A IFF, WAV), documents (Microsoft Office, iWork, Adobe) and photos.
But non-wifi drives, i.e. those that require a cable connection, won't work with the iPad.

  • What external hard drives work well with time machine?

I'm a new mac user - trying to decide what to buy for an external hard drive. Thoughts on features to look for?

yes, there are compatibility issues. TM drive has to be formatted Mac os extended journaled with GUID partition scheme for use with intel macs. you'll need to reformat the drive for that as most new drives are formatted FAT with MBR partition scheme. also, Mac os extended format is not readable by windows without special software. so what you need to do is reformat the drive on your mac for TM and make a partition on it which you can format FAT. you can use that partition to get stuff from windows and the other partition for TM.

  • What external hard drive is computable with the iPad 4

Is the seagate wifi external hard drive computable with the iPad 4?

To answer that we would need to know which one you are referring to.
    If you mean this one:
    http://www.seagate.com/external-hard-drives/portable-hard-drives/wireless/seagat e-satellite/
Then yes it is compatible with iPad.
    Seagate wrote:
The Seagate Satellite™ device lets you take your media library on-the-go and stream it wirelessly to your iPad®, Android® tablets, and smartphones.
If that's not it, you would need to tell us the Model of hard drive you are talking about.

  • What hard drives are compatible with OSX Snow Leopard Boot Camp?

Recently when the video card in my desktop Mac died, I decided to make some upgrades, one of them being the hard drive. After doing some research, I fixed on the Western Digital 3TB Caviar Green 3.5-Inch and had it installed at the same time as the new video card. I installed OS 10.6.8, opened up Boot Camp Assistant, set the partition sizes: 2.5 TB for my Mac side and 500 GB for the Windows. XP wouldn't install so I ordered Windows 7 and began trying to set up the Windows partition. Each time I tried, I got the same error -- Windows 7 couldn't install on the 500 GB partition since it was formatted GPT which was strange since when I looked at the partition inside of Disk Utility, it said NTFS. While troubleshooting, I came across the following:
・Mac users should know that WD's new drives do not support Boot Camp, therefore they cannot be used as a dual-boot hard drive.
・The MBR part of the hybrid partition table cannot work with 3TB hard drives. MBR is limited to 2TB.
・In a 32-bit MBR world, a disk larger than 2TB is probably invalid, and different OS's and tools react wildly differently when this is forced beyond 2TB.
I called Western Digital to confirm which of their drives were in fact compatible with Boot Camp and they replied since Boot Camp was a third-party application, they have no information on compatibility. They told me to call Apple to get the information. Before purchasing a new drive and sending back the 3TB WD, I want to be sure I know which specs to look for in a hard drive in deciding whether it is compatible with my machine. Any helpful advice or a point in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.
Here are the specs for my Mac:
    2006 24" iMac 6,1 2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    OS 10.6.8
    Boot Camp Assistant 3.0.4

Thanks for responding to my question. I guess I'm not sure I understand your reply though. I had no problem installing OS X on the 3TB WD Caviar Green and WD assured me that if I wanted to install only Windows 7 on it, there would be no compatibility issues. The problem lies with wanting the drive to be dual-bootable I guess via using Boot Camp (I know of no other way to go about it). The tech at OWC (where I bought the drive) said he had never heard of any problems with being able to install both Mac and Windows OS on the drive. In fact, he gave the same reply as yours: most hard drives should be able to work perfectly fine with your Mac. It's just that I can't get XP or Windows 7 (32 bit or 64 bit) to install on the 2nd partition, making the drive I have now not dual-bootable. The tech said 2TB hard drives were different and should solve the problem but when I asked him for any discernible spec I could look for in shopping for a replacement drive, he couldn't give me one, i.e. most drives should be okay. I have paid to have the 3TB installed and will have to pay to get the drive taken out and a replacement put back in -- I want to make sure whatever drive I put in this time allows me to have 2 partitions: one for my Mac OSX system and the other for my Windows enviroment (either XP or Windows 7).
If there is a work-around not involving Boot Camp, please let me know. I thought the reason for using Boot Camp as opposed to Disk Utility to create the dual-bootable drive was the benefit of using Mac drivers on the Windows side.
If there is another way, I don't understand why PC world made this blanket statement:
"Mac users should know that WD's new drives do not support Boot Camp, therefore they cannot be used as a dual-boot hard drive."

  • What types of hard drives are compatible with my HP Folio Laptop?

I got a refurbished HP Folio 1029wm.I'm statisified with its performance.
It's just for some reason that I wish to upgrade my hard drive to larger capacity.
I'm wondering whether the mSATA SSD is my only option? Any Alternatives?
Like SATA SSD, or hybrid drives, will they be possible to be installed on my Laptop?

    Hi,
You've got no other option because no slot for HDD, only for mSATA as you already know:

  • What external hard drives work best with time machine

What is the best external drive that is compatible with time machine?

I see a lot of people on the Apple Discussion boards mention Time Capsule. The experience I've heard from folks with the First gen units was terrible. Poorly designed, poorly manufactured (sorry Apple!). They suffered all kinds of heat stress failures etc. The follow up devices are supposed to better, but I don't think it's mandatory you buy Apple product to run Time Machine. In fact choose based on price/capacity, then possibly on Manufacturers reputation. I use a external USB dock that has a Serial ATA connector on it. That way I can swap drives out when/if they fail or get full. That way I KNOW who manufactured the actual drive itself. Often times if you get a Time Capsule the drive manufacturer is the "flavor of the month" so to speak. There's a number of outfits that make these bare SATA style docks, and you can connect them through USB (which I have) or higher speed connectors like FireWire 800 (for faster reads/writes/backups). My best recommendation is to buy one of those SATA dock devices, then buy a bare hard drive from a reputable manufacturer. Then setup Time Machine and use the left over space that it doesn't use for your growing iPhoto collection? Use your best judgement, as there's no real right/wrong way.

  • What internal hard drive is compatible with Macbook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2012)?

I live in India. I have a MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2012). My Macbook crashed 3 days ago. Apple said the internal hard disk needed replacement. They gave me two options.
    1. They get a new hard drive replaced from Apple for 12000 INR (280$),
or 2. If you find it expensive, you can buy an internal hard disk from sources other than Apple and we will fix it in for you.
I have decided to go with option 2, because option 1. is not feasible for me!
    Now my question is,
What type of internal hard disk should I buy?
    or
What are the specifications for the internal hard drive that must be met to suit my MBP?
Getting my internal hard disk replaced is something I've never done before.

  • What external dvd drive is compatible with IMAC with optical drive

what external drive is compatiblee with IMAC with optical driv

As far as my experience goes I have had all external dvd drives work throu USB, the USB stands for Universal Seriel Bus and that means the drives are already in the device, so you can probably just go to best buy or to new egg and order a cheap one.
If you have usb 3.0 I would go with that since its one of the faster ones and you will save money on using a thunder bolt device, and trust me a $17 dvd player works just as good as a $120 dvd player.
