What external HDs qualify as Mac-compatible?

Will any external HD work with an iMac, or does it need to meet certain requirements?
TIA!

Hello,
Generally speaking, you will have a hard time finding an external hard drive that WON'T work.
An external hard drive is an external hard drive. They work the same with one system as they do with the other. They don't care what you connect them to.
The difference, is that some drives have special features which require drivers. If those drivers are only available for Windows, then those special features will not be available to you with Mac OS X.
Otherwise, You can buy and use whatever external hard drive you like.
You can use USB 2.0 and FireWire drives with your computer. If you are wanting to actually boot your computer from the external hard drive, then consider the following: the Intel-based Macs can boot from both USB 2.0 and FireWire hard drives. But, the PowerPC-based Macs can only boot from external drives of the FireWire type.
Generally speaking, you will get a huge performance improvement by using FireWire drives. They can transfer data at a much faster sustained rate than USB. And, I can tell you from personal experience that using FireWire drives provides me with nearly the same performance as my internal drives. And, likewise, from personal experience, I can tell you that the real-world performance of USB 2.0 hard drives is roughly half the performance of FireWire 400. Whenever I have to use my USB 2.0 drive, I get very impatient and have to wait a long time for my files to be transferred. My USB 2.0 and FireWire drives are otherwise comparable / identical. Just different enclosures.
So, do yourself a favor and go with FireWire 400.
As for further recommendations, I would suggest getting a FireWire drive with the Oxford 911+ or 912 chipset.
If the drive's specs don't specify which chipset they use, then it is likely one of the lower-end generic (cheaper) chipsets. While the lower-end chipsets generally work fine, the Oxford chipsets have proven to be more compatible over the years.
Basically, the cheaper chipsets have proven in the past to have trouble when new operating systems / revisions became available. They continued working fine with the older versions, but would not work with the newer versions.
The Oxford chipsets have had a great history of working with anything you connect them to.
My personal favorite drive company is OtherWorld Computing:
http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/
I've had great experiences with their more economical "Neptune" package. I've owned two of those, and been extremely happy with them.
I hope this helps.

I need it to burn DVD +R DL.
Can someone please recommend me a suitable drive?
    Thanks

  • Digital Camcorders - What Kinds Are Good AND Mac Compatible???

Well, the subject kinda says it but so what are they? Im looking for good digital camcorders that have good video quality and that are Mac/iMovie compatible... My price range is pretty much anything $275 and under.

In that price range, you are limiting yourself to only a few, and video quality will be OK, but not great.
If the camera has a firewire jack on it, you should be able to connect it to your mac and capture to iMovie.
MiniDV tape cameras are the standard, but some of the newer hard drive/DVD cameras (AVCHD format) will work with the newest version of iMovie.
What's definitely necessary is the firewire jack. Cameras in your price range from Sony, Panasonic, JVC, etc. should work.

You don't have installer discs with that model. What do you need to do? USB and Thunderbolt external drives do not require any special software. If you need to partition and format them, then use Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.

  • What external hard drives are compatible w/ lion, snow leopard and time machine?

I am looking to buy an external hard drive to back up all data on my Macbook Pro that is currently running Snow Leopard, then upgrading to Lion.  I want an external hard drive that is compatible with BOTH Snow Leopard (for use of creating a backup prior to my upgrade) and Lion (for daily use once I've upgraded). I also don't want to spend more than $100 if possible. Any suggestions?  Thanks!

There is currently a shortage of drives due to flooding in one of the countries in which they are manufactured.
Getting one for under $100 at this point might be difficult. You didn't mention how full your current hard drive is, but for Time Machine, you should plan on two to three times the data you currently have (or expect to have).
I looked through Newegg's selection and didn't see more than a couple 1TB drives for less than $100. I recently bought a 3TB drive for $150. They're in the $200-$300 range, now.
I always buy bare drives and put them in an enclosure I buy separately. All the name-brand, ready-to-use drives come with a bunch of software you don't need and some of their software causes problems.
I had some bad luck/bad customer service with Seagate, so I've been buying Western Digital. Though, my replacement drives from Seagate have been going fine.
I've used Icy Dock and MacAlly enclosures. Both have worked well. If you do decide to go that route, you must make sure the enclosure can support the size of drive you buy (both physical--2.5" or 3.5", and storage size--1TB, 2TB, 3TB). The controllers in the cases may not be able to handle a 3TB drive, for example.
No matter how you go, you have to decide what kind of interface you want to use. USB is cheaper, but Firewire is faster. Firewire 800 is even faster, but costs more. All of that depends on what ports you have on the computer. OS X doesn't currently support USB 3.

  • If I have to format an external hard drive to make it Mac compatible, will it delete all the content in the external hard drive?

If I have to format an external hard drive to make it Mac compatible, will it delete all the content in the external hard drive?

As others have said, the answer to your question is a big YES.  Formatting a drive will delete everything!
To keep your data, yet reformat the drive for optimal Mac compatibility, you will need to:
    1) copy your files to a different hard drive (I would recommend two different locations if you value your data)
    2) repartition/format the external drive
    3) then copy the files back to the external.
You haven't given details but if you need the external to ONLY be compatible with the Mac (and no longer care if if can be read by Windows), then you will want to partition the drive using the GUID partition scheme, and format as the (HFS+) "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" filesystem.  You can do so using the built-in "Disk Utility" application on your Mac (in the Applications/Utilities directory).  Here are instructions:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ph5845
If you need the drive to be compatible with both Mac and Windows computers then please post that so someone can recommend a solution for your specific needs.

  • External HDs, Digi002 suddenly not recognized by Mac Pro or G5

I have a very strange problem that I have not seen on any of the forums. Neither of my two Macs, a G5 or a newly purchased Mac Pro, recognize any of my external hard drives or Digi002, which is a controller used by Pro Tools. I have changed the ports, cables, everything. None of them will mount or be recognized by either computer. They do not show up in Disk Utilities or System Profiler.

I have changed the ports, cables, everything. None of them will mount or be recognized by either computer. They do not show up in Disk Utilities or System Profiler.
All of the five external HDs I own, the external DVD burner, and Digi002 stopped mounting/being recognized on my G5. I needed to upgrade my computer anyway, so I purchased a Mac Pro. None of the above are recognized by the Mac Pro either.
I have tried FW400, FW800, and USB slots in both computers, and none of them will mount or be recognized.
Interestingly, all three of my USB drives mount in the USB ports that will not show any of my external HDs.
    _*G5 (OS10.5.8, G5 PowerMac7,2, 4G RAM):*_
    - None of the four external drives or Digi002 (FW400 connection) shows up. This does not matter whether it is USB, FW400, or FW800. Only USB drives show up.

    - None of the external drives or Digi002 (FW400 connection) shows up. This does not matter whether it is USB, FW400, or FW800. Only USB drives show up.
    - I cannot get iTunes to play through the 1/8" output.
    - Pro Tools 9.0.0 does not have input/output, and of course, does not recognize Digi002.
Thanks for any help you can give.

Your new Mac Pro, by default, boots 64-bit kernel mode; requires 64-bit drivers or you will need to switch to 32-bit mode. At least to test.
Non-system drives are best formatted with the latest OS; and use GUID rather than Apple Partition Map.
Between a new Mac, new OS and all the changes, try a very simple approach.
Also, hope that you didn't migrate / import or use Setup to bring applications over to the Mac Pro; and don't use the G5 drives until you can reformat those to GUID.

  • Mac Compatible External DVD Burner Not Compatible?

I just recently bought the New Samsung Slim External DVD Writer SE-S084. It does not respond at all. It gives me no desktop icon when I plug it in via USB(which is it's only power source).
It claims on the box that it is MAC Compatible, OS requirement for MAC is version 10.4.6 Tiger. I'm updated to 10.4.11 so shouldn't be a problem there. In my search I came across somebody who had the same issue with the same Samsung product, and with a firmware update recommended by another poster, their problem was resolved. Everything worked fine.
Both of my EFI and SMC firmware is updated. Could it be I have to reinstall the firmware?
I also tried to use PatchBurn with no avail. Do I need PatchBurn?
I am so lost. Can anyone help me with this? It seems like a simple solution has to be out there, I just can't find it on my own.
    Thanks!

I am a little bit miffed at the fact that you have a newer Macbook and you have a problem with the Optical drive. Did you restart the computer and select OSX instead of Windows, then open Safari and then go to Samsung's web site, and support then find your model of external and download the drivers for it. They should open and run automaticlly, if not they will give you the instructions on how to download them. When you do this make sure you have the external plugged in. I would also make sure that you are plugged into the USB-2 port, and not the USB-1 port.
If all that fails Google for your model Samsung and type in SAMSUNG EXTERNAL SLIMLINE DRIVERS FOR MAC. then hit enter. many times you can find opensource drivers there that are better than factory drivers.
Check as well and make sure there isn't a recall or a fix from Apples Site for your Internal Optical drive. It simply doesn't make since that you have a failure on this newer optical drive.
Did you Run Macjanitor, or Cache OutX, or Onyx, and did you repair permissions. Any one of these or a combination could fix your problem if the optical drive isn' fried.
Any of the software mentioned is FREE and you can Google for them.

  • What is the best Mac-compatible Alternative to Quicken and why?

I made the jump to Apple desktops when my PC went on the fritz.  I was using Quicken 2013,  mostly for tracking accounts and forecasting spending, but not the higher end stuff like paying bills, tracking investments, etc.

  • What external hard drive will work for my 2012 mac book air

i dont want to spend money on one incompatible

Don't use any Western Digital HDD.
I recently bought this one, it is excellent:
Toshiba Canvio Connect 2TB Portable Hard Drive, Black (HDTC720XK3C1)
If you need a smaller capacity, then so be it. You can run almost any external HD with your Mac. Larger capacity drives, or arrays, require external power sources so as not to overload your USB bus power supply. Smaller, compact HD do not require this.
When you connect the drive, you simply need to reformat it using disk utility.
    1) Open Disk Utility
    2) Plug in your drive. Select the external HD in disk utility
    3) Select the 'Erase' tab for the drive
    4) Under 'Format' , select Mac OS extended (journaled) with a GUID partition table.
    5) Name the drive, click Erase
    You are good to go.

  • What external dvd drive is compatible with IMAC with optical drive

what external drive is compatiblee with IMAC with optical driv

As far as my experience goes I have had all external dvd drives work throu USB, the USB stands for Universal Seriel Bus and that means the drives are already in the device, so you can probably just go to best buy or to new egg and order a cheap one.
If you have usb 3.0 I would go with that since its one of the faster ones and you will save money on using a thunder bolt device, and trust me a $17 dvd player works just as good as a $120 dvd player.
