What external monitor??

I need to come up with the specs for a few edit stations. Need to do both DV and HDV.....so...
For HDV I am thinking a Powermac (be it intel or G5-not installing for a while) with two 23" screens (although perhaps one will be a dell 24" so that we can play back from the HDV camcorder direct)
For DV I would have in the past specified a external monitor to chain to the DV cam or deck and my understanding was that one should use a CRT because they run a different colourspace. Does this still stand now that home televisions are becoming LCD? If we run from dv deck into the video input of the Dell will that do? Dont have the cash for a proper broadcast monitor (or the space really)
I assume that there is no reall need for a HD output card if working HDV? Anything I should consider adding? The G5 would be pretty high spec for motion and things too.
Cheers for all advice!

hear are our findings, they are personal but represent comments from hundreds of clients watching the output from FCP
We have a choice of a number of LCD computer displays from many manufacturers varying in size from 19" to 42" We colour manage the displays using a custom ICC profile.
We do not use LCD displays for the following reasons:
we can only watch the displays for a few minutes at a time due to the distracting effects from the displays
the colour space of an LCD is extremely poor in relation to a CRT and does not produce natural looking colour
pixelation on the image is very noticable and is unacceptable
a cheap CRT TV is much more preferable than looking at a very expensive LCD of any size especially at close viewing
A compromise would be using an LCD or plasma Television as a monitor, but close distance viewing is not recommended and the colour schemes they produce although pleasing are highly processeed by the electronics and can not be relied on.
In the UK, all broadcasters and all the facility houses we deal with ban the use of LCD computer displays for monitoring output video for the above reasons.
It would be interesting to hear other viepoints

  • What external monitor is recommended for photoshop on HP dv6-1361sb?

Product Name and number:  HP Pavillion Dv6-1361sb
Operating System : Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit
Program : Adobe Photoshop Elements 9 (upgrading to 10) and possible future lightroom
What does HP recommend as a high quality (HP of course) external monitor for photo work with combination and are there any restrictions such as resolution restraints to be wary of?

    Hi,
Depending on your requirement and how much you are willing to pay. The one which can calibrate colors for photoshop normally more expensive than others.  Your machine should be able to handle all normal monitors in the market today.

So true. Ah! The undeniable impact of excellence.
I was going to mention the lower-cost option of a Dell--they are quite nice--until I relized that I've not heard any reports of their being connected to a Thunderbolt port via whatever adaptor is required.

I Just bought a new 13" Macbook air and want to add 2 external monitors. Am wondering if the Minin Display Port to Dual Link DVI adapter will work. If not is there any other solution to add 2 external monitors to a MacBook Air?

nice, it's always the ones that fail to do a basic search that are the most hostile. i'm sorry you thought my asking you what monitor was 'drilling' my crystal ball was broken at the time.
there are TONS of posts and articles out there with your answer, but since that may be too hard for you, i've provided some here.

  • What is the best way to hook up an external monitor? Im having some issues!

Up until now I have been able to use my external monitor while editing. I recently got a 20" HDTV with HDMI and a jack to use it as a computer monitor. I notice that once I set my VIEW option to ALL FRAMES in FCP, it will only show me a frame at a time until I stop the playhead then the shot will pop up wherever I stopped the playhead.
    The set up:
I have a Caldigit 4TB Raid that i use for editing. I have a FW800 going from that to my G5 Powermac. I also have a FW400 coming out of the Caldigit to my Sony GVD-1000 MiniDV deck (only using this as a "pass through"). I have S-Video/RCA audio coming out of the Sony to the jacks on the 20" HDTV.
Now I was getting a picture but it was showing me a frame at a time. Now it won't show me anything at all not even on the Sony GVD1000 deck. ALL FRAMES is still set in FCP. I am not sure why I cannot see my work in real time on the other monitor or see it period for that matter.
Device Control is set to FW basic which turns my screen black. However when I select another option other than FW Basic, it turns my screen blue so that right there tells me that the computer is talking to the monitor.
As for Graphics card, I am using the ATI Radeon 9600. Last night I hooked up a custom made DVI to HDMI cable and nothing happened aside from desktop icons completely left the screen. Maybe I need to set it up to Mirror the other screen before I hook that cable up or something. Still doesn't explain my issue with FCP.
I do NOT have a AJA or Matrox breakout box and Im thinking I probably will need that. Perhaps my problem could be everything is digital till the signal gets to the Sony deck, i am coming out that deck with analog signals to the monitor.
    Any suggestions?
Before I bought the HDTV, I had a regular SD monitor and never had any issues with seeing my work on it while I edited.
I am working with footage shot in 720p and I am using the correct HD codec to edit with so I am not sure why I cannot view my work on my external monitor.
    Thanks!

Your setup works fine for DV, because you used a DV deck and most likely DV footage. But now you are working with 720p HD footage (what format, BTW? HDV, dvcpro HD?). That same setup won't work for monitoring HD. Now you need an HD box or card to send out a proper HD signal. And since you have an older G5, you won't find any current solutions. You'll have to look at used capture cards that are PCIx. Or you and look at the Matrox MXO, that connects to the computer via a monitor connection. DVI.

  • What are the names of the ports I have in my Macbook Pro to plug an external monitor into?

What are the names of the ports in my MacBook Pro that I can plug an external monitor into?

You have Thunderbolt or Mini DisplayPort. If you know which external display you want or you already have it, look at the ports it has got and get a Mini DisplayPort adapter for it. There are Mini DisplayPort adapters for DVI, VGA and HDMI.
Most external displays have DVI, VGA or HDMI. If you can use HDMI, use it, because it will provide much better quality. See > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4241?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
Mini DisplayPort adapters can be used with Thunderbolt

  • What to look for in an external monitor

I am in the process of changing my editing system to handle hd. I am using a 24" imac 2.4 Intel Core 2 Duo. With my sd set up I used a Sony dv/dvcam deck and a JVC professional 13" Monitor. I am purchasing the new JVC gy-hm100u camcorder when it is released in April. I am somewhat confused about having an external monitor hooked up to my system for viewing my FCP projects. (1) What should I look for in the external monitor. Do I want a computer monitor or an HD TV? Once I purchase the external monitor/tv can I get rid of my SD JVC monitor all together. I don't want to spend a lot but I want to make sure I get a monitor with the right specs. (2) What happens if I want to use past dv footage in a new project shot in hd. I do a lot of corporate projects which require the use of old interviews as part of the new productions. Am I going to have an issue doing this? Thanks in advance for any help.

To view HD variants, you'll need a 3rd party card.
You are severely limited with an iMac. Your only real choice is a Matrox MXO driving a 24" Dell or older 23" Apple Cinema Display.
While you can use an AJA ioHD to drive a HDTV, you'll need to connect it via FW800. This is a problem as no other devices can be on the same bus and, since all firewire ports on an iMac are on the same bus, it won't work.
I would not dispose of the Standard Def monitor. If you work with SD material, you'll still need it. HDtvs are lousy devices for monitoring SD.

Hi, firetiger.... i have the EXACT same problem!!! i have the same Macbook aluminum unibody screen also. I have no idea how to fix it. I'm also out of warranty and i've tried everything... resetting the pram, trying to restart in safe mode, trying to boot from a cd... .NOTHING WORKS!!! i can still control brightness itself but ive never tried attaching to an external monitor. I know everything is loaded correctly... i just don't know whats wrong. If you have any ideas.. please let me know. Also, I think apple will fix the macbook pros with a similar issue for free http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2377 but i know this doesnt apply for me. hopefully they work something out because I really love that computer!!!

  • What is the maximum resolution for an external monitor for a 13" BMP

I have a new MBP 13 and a new Samsung LED 23" monitor that is spec'd at 1920x1080 resolution. However the maximum resolution I can get (using Display) for the external monitor is 1600x900 (or 1600x1200 stretched). What could be causing this limitation?

Are you guys able to resolve the issue with the Samsung HDTV LCD monitor? I just bought the Samsung B2230HD but having some image issue. I am connecting to the LCD from my macbook pro using Mini Display Port -> DVI -> HDMI but the image on the LCD is very grainy where the text is not sharp at all. The mac is able to detect the correct resolution of 1920x1080 though

  • What do you need to get video output to external monitor

    Hello,
I'm fairly new to Color and have read a few posts that color can't be viewed by firewire to an external monitor. Basically what I have right now for external viewing in FCP is a JVC SR-VS30 Mini DV NTSC deck with firewire connected to my computer. From the deck it goes to a small TV set and a Sony Trinitron PVM color video monitor. What do I need extra to be able to see my color correction in Color on an external monitor. BTW in Color currently the Video Output tab in Setup>User Prefs is grayed out showing Disabled. I suppose that when I get whatever I need to see Color on an external monitor that this tab would NOT be grayed out or would I have to set some other settings.
    Thanks.

Well, you can waste a lot of time and money trying to get your old iron up to speed but the sad fact is, even though it may work with Color, it will most likely end in a less than satisfactory experience all around. You need to determine if your G5 has PCI, PCI-x or PCIe slots and then purchase the appropriate cards.
However, Final Cut Studio 2 is optimized for the Intel processors. You will see users here and there using the newest models G5 with great success but quite honestly, you need a Mac Pro.
Or just purchase the Aja IO/HD which is a firewire 800 interface and the only firewire device that will preview externally Color.

  • External Monitoring...how is it for you and what for the future (CS5)

With the prospect of CS5 on the horizon and many of us considering it as the opportunity to up spec O.S,, software and hardware simultaneously (largely due to 64-bit)...I am wondering how everyone is getting on with their external monitoring solutions and what the expectation is for CS5.
In my opinion the way it is now (in CS4) is less than professional and needs sorting out (hopefully in CS5).
Issues are : Video / audio / synching internal and external devices so all play together.
Premiere Pro runs two playback / preview systems : One for scrubbing and source monitoring;  the other for Program playback /preview.
(Example : Observe how and when audio plays through the audio mixer or observe what and when video plays through external or internal monitor...then note what happens when you PUSH PLAY - spacebar)
Without repeating the problems in depth, I would like to say how I wish it worked for me as an editor in a Pro environment with clients that  sit in my suite as we work together.
I have  a two monitor NLE set up plus one external for client viewing (and also for grading /CC).
I need the External Monitor (Video & Audio)  and the Internal Monitor (Video and Audio) to playdown together.  I dont want one to stop and the other to function.
I want them both working simultaneously playing video and audio.  Am I supposed to get out of my chair to wander over to the client monitor to see the changes we just discussed then I actioned in the timeline?  !!!!!!
A feature request : I would also like to be able to access the Playback Monitoring via Shortcut keys or On Screen buttons.  It is very handy to be able to playback on the second monitor  but it should be defaulted at 100% (Not Fit - as per the Program Monitor)
As regards HD.  One should not have to install 3rd Party cards to monitor HD externally.  The problem with that is one then needs to use the Presets from that card manufacturer.  The Presets , eg P2 work so well in PPRO...so why do we need to mess with 3rd party drivers just to monitor.

    Exactly!
I just like to let people know where is the origin of that shortcut (in previous CS editions it was in PROJECTS menu bar tab, and since CS4 it is in SEQUENCE menu bar tab....
I was trying to figure out what do you thing my "atom like button" )))
Finally figured out that it is the RGB icon (which is more the molecule then atom), but you gave me a hard time looking for atom!!! I thought it is in 3rd place, somewhere, as well - but "Atom" almost remained misteri
Anyway, interestingly enough, I just succeeded in getting my picture out on EXTERNAL CRT monitor through DV-monitoring in playback settings - FireWire through my scope (deck) and to TV....
And picture appeared.... But stood still.... Wouldn't move.... except when scrubbing... But when press PLAY it froze both on external DV monitor and  PPRO program monitor in software!!!
Maybe it is my old ATI 3850 HD VGA - and maybe it just can't work!!!!
This pisses me off a bit!!!
I have unpacked copy of new AVID MEDIA COMPOSER 5 - which I have decided not to install until I am through with searching all new possibilities in CS5....
But now, I feel more and more like opening and installing it ----- Just to see how is it managed there!!!
It is hard for me ---- even to think to leave ADOBE ------ it is already enough that 80% of my Clients first ask me "DO YOU HAVE AVID".... and then, to half of them I somehow explain that it is gonna be better if we give ADOBE a chance, and the other half is just hard on their flexibility --- they've heard everything in Hollywood is edited in AVID, so they want their project to be the same....
And I was having a real hard time defending PPRO for years, preventing my Clients to make me switch to AVID - and look what ADOBE did to me now - ADOBE made me reach for my AVID MC v5 and install it and have it ready to take over any project, including the one I am working on right now!
    Why, Adobe, Oh, Why!?

  • HP 2159M External Monitor - What gives?

I recently purchased an HP 2159m monitor, after hearing good reviews about it from people on this and other forums who use macs. I also purchased a Mini Displayport to HDMI adaptor from monoprice, and have the monitor all connected to my Macbook Pro.
Occasionally, my macbook's screen will flash baby blue when connected, and the monitor says it's connected, however in System Preferences the Macbook Pro does not recognize the monitor and says no external monitor is connected. Thinking drivers might perhaps fix it, I looked online and found that there are no OS X drivers for this monitor.
What gives? How are other people using this monitor when it apparently seems mac-incompatible for me? I've never even heard of a monitor being incompatible with a Mac.
Has anyone with a similar problem found a solution? HP technical support simply said sorry we don't have a driver for you, talk to the store you bought the monitor from.

Sorry for reviving this thread from the dead, but I found a workaround and wanted to share it:
As mentioned on https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour … bug/796030 this is a known(?) bug with Kernel versions newer than 2.6.34.
So after downgrading to this version I was able to use the full resolution of the screen, but with a ~ 200pixel wide stripe missing between the monitors (External left of internal => virtual Screen of 3200*1200) and a equally sized stripe of the most left screen on the most right side. This stripe was only missing for the screen, but not for the mousecursor => If I wanted to press a button I had to press it ~200pixel right of it
(But I was able to use Composite Effects in Compiz)
This was resolved by disabling Composite in xorg.conf
    not the full xorg.conf
    Section "Extensions"
    Option "Composite" "Disable"
    EndSection

  • What resolution do I need in an external monitor for my 15" G4 Powerbook?

Hello mac friends this is my first post I really hope someone can help me out. I need to get an external monitor for my 15 powerbook g4 1.67 w/ 64 mb graphics card. I can not find any monitor on the market whos' native resolution matches that of my g4 (1280x854). Do I need to match the native res? I ideally would like a widescreen b/w 20 and 23", though I am not crazy about the apple displays (mainly the $). I am trying to figure out what native res I need to be looking for in an external monitor, etc. Anyone who can advise would be greatly appreciated!!! Thanks- Jon
    PowerBook G4 15inch 1.67ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   low res, 1.5gb ram

The fact that you don't need to match the native resolution disguises a great and valuable feature: Your PowerBook can drive monitors higher than its native resolution. Check the specifications for your PowerBook to see how high it can go. (There's a Specifications link at the top of this page.)
For example, my PowerBook G4 native resolution is also 1280x854 like yours. I bought a 20" Apple Cinema Display which is 1680x1050. Is that a problem? No, it's GREAT. Because I didn't just double my screen space, the external more than doubled it thanks to the ability of the PowerBook video card to go beyond the native resolution. My PowerBook's specs say I could run a monitor up to 2048 by 1536 pixels. (Many Windows laptops have the same capability.)
You can go to any computer store and buy just about any monitor that has a DVI or VGA port on it, that is within the resolution range for your PowerBook, and it will work. Dell, Samsung, NEC, etc. should all be OK if you want to save money. DVI is better and plugs in directly, but if you buy VGA, you will need to use the VGA-DVI adapter that came with your PowerBook.
