What external read / write DVD drive is best for imac

I have just bought a 27" iMac computer that is not fitted with a DVD read write external drive. Any advice on what I should buy?

There is no "best for Mac."  "Different folks for different folks."  It's all about your personal preference.  Whichever one you decide to purchase, make sure you read all of the reviews.
I personally use a LaCie external burner drive.

You just need a powered hub.. if you already use one then fine.
Plug in just about any external hard disk will work fine. Format has to be readable by the TC.. ie fat32.. or much better HFS+.. plug it into a Mac to prepare the drive.
Pick whatever size suits.. nowadays 2TB are most economical.
WD, Seagate have goobled up all the minor players.. so pick one.
Whatever suits your budget and asthetics.
NOTE.. The USB on the TC is fine for printers.. IMHO it is the wrong way to go with USB disks.. use the internal disk of the TC.. USB is less than half the native speed plugged into a Mac.. TC to USB is slow.. far slower than internal drive.. or using external drive as external.

  • Where can I get the driver for my HP DE8A4L external USB CD/DVD drive?

Where can I get the driver for my HP DE8A4L external USB CD/DVD drive?
On the label it says, Model HSTNN-PD06-91
    and
    HP PN: 518819-001 Rev.B
I've had my Mini 110-1000 running our music system for a couple of years, no complaints.  When I wanted a CD/DVD drive, I purchased a DE8A4L external USB drive directly from HP.  It didn't come with a driver disc.  When I plug it in, the USB subsystem does not enable it.  Device Manager shows a yellow exclamation point, saying, "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware..."   It is running Windows XP Home Edition SP3.
    What gives with this device?

Following up on tactic 2) above, I upgraded the BIOS from version F07 to the latest version available on the HP download site, version F19.  This went well, but unfortunately the system still does not recognize the device.
When I try to Device Manager, and select the DE8A4L DVD device, and try "search for a device driver", it says it cannot find a better match for the driver already installed.
This Mini 110-1000 only came with 1 Gb RAM, and Windows XP Home.   Is one of these a critical limitation for running an external USB DVD drive?

  • Need External FW CD/DVD Drive Recommendations

Moving my mac into a dedicated 'machine room' that will make accessing the internal DVD drive impractical. Would like recommendations for a reliable external FW equivalent DVD Drive to use in its place.

I like the ones made by http://www.macsales.com/
They support all of Apple's applications, unlike some of the other drives in the market.

  • Editing read/write DVD's with OS X 10.5

    Hi folks,
I wanted to delete a couple of videos from a read/write DVD, but leave a couple of the existing videos on it also (6 different videos on it recorded from TV on a DVR), and then copy a few files from my mac onto it to free up some space. Is this possible with a macbook pro? If so, how? I gather disk utility will only do multisession CD's and NOT DVD's....

All DVD burners can do DVD-R multisession, however the initial burn has to be setup as apendable.
Same with CD burners on CD-R. If the initial burn is not appendable, that's the last burn.
CD-RW and DVD-RW are complete rewrite burns rather than appendable, you lose everything on the disk during a rewrite. I am not sure if you can rewrite over an initial -R or +R burn.
DAO, if your burner supports it as far as I know would require installing Windows on your Mac.

Appears your optical drive is "broke" = hardware issue.

  • Is it Possible to change the DVD drive to Bluray for HP Pavilion dv6-6176sx

    Hi All,
Is it Possible to change the DVD drive to Bluray for HP Pavilion dv6-6176sx Entertainment Notebook PC?
    Thanks

Sure it is not even very difficult. Do you just need a BR reader or a burner/reader? The replacement disk drive will be $80-120 or so, maybe a bit less. You can find them on eBay. You can use a generic one but that may require some reworking of the faceplate or just get an original dv6-6000 BR drive on eBay. Swaps out with a couple screws on the bottom; slide out and slide in the replacement. You will need new software to play BR movies, of course.

  • What external dvd drive is compatible with IMAC with optical drive

what external drive is compatiblee with IMAC with optical driv

As far as my experience goes I have had all external dvd drives work throu USB, the USB stands for Universal Seriel Bus and that means the drives are already in the device, so you can probably just go to best buy or to new egg and order a cheap one.
If you have usb 3.0 I would go with that since its one of the faster ones and you will save money on using a thunder bolt device, and trust me a $17 dvd player works just as good as a $120 dvd player.

  • IMac cannot read any DVD drives - internal or external

    Hi,
My iMac began exhibiting problems about 12 months ago when it wouldn't load CD's properly to iTunes - it would do some songs and not others. It also stopped reading an external drive I bought. I bought another external DVD drive from an apple store - no luck. This iMac of mine refuses to deal with any external media.
Has anyone had the same problem - can anyone help.
I can't upgrade to Snow Leopard BTW - won't read the media
    Thanks and regards,
    Jon

Hi and welcome to Apple Discussions...
From your Finder menu bar click Finder / Preferences then select the General tab.
Make sure: *External disks* is selected.
If that box was already, checked try repairing disk permissions.
Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.

  • MacBook SuperDrive Reads/Writes DVDs but not CDs

The SuperDrive on my first-gen MacBook (bought May 2006, Intel Core Duo) is acting up, but in the opposite direction of what you might expect: It can read and write DVDs, but fails on all forms of CDs: it cannot mount commercially-produced audio CDs or CD-ROMs, nor any form of CD-R (blank or previously written). It ***** them in, spins a bit, hesitates and then finally spits them out after a minute or so.
But it can read all sorts of DVDs (video and data), whether commercially stamped or home burned. And it can write to DVD-R. Pretty much the opposite of what you might expect if the lens was dirty or some other mechanical problems - since one would assume that the DVD mode would require higher tolerances than CD modes. And yes, I've used a CD lens cleaner just to be sure.
    Suggestions?

Thanks - so does that mean a SuperDrive has two different lasers, one for CD media and the other for DVDs? I guess I assumed there would just be one (for the DVD) that was downward-compatible so it could also read CDs.
I've done a lot of searching, and I've seen many cases where a drive fails to work with DVDs but still works with CDs ... but not the other way around (which is my situation).

  • M60-182: Can it read/write DVD-R Dual Layer?

I couldn't find in specs any list of supported types of media, the model of dvd-drive is mat****a dvd-ram uj-840s

According to the drive specifications it should be possible to write on the DVD+R double layer max 2.4x
Usually you should find a information about tested and compatible medias in the user manual which should be preinstalled on your notebook.

  • Applet read/write to drive?

I'm considering learing java to create a applet that people can use while playing a game. I read somewhere that applets can't normally read/write to a drive. Is this true? How could the information the users put in be saved on their side for future use? Do I have to go with C++?

    Your answer is "yes, but".
Your applet can access the user's drive if you "sign" it. You may already have found that out in your research. What that means is, the first time the user loads your applet, a dialog box will come up asking the user if they want to allow your applet to do that.
This may cause the user to become suspicious, especially in these days where worms and viruses are on the front page of the newspaper. However if your users are your friends and acquaintances -- or have some other reason to trust you -- then that may not be a problem.

  • IMac mid 2007 won't read internal dvd drive

I have a mid 2007 imac and it no longer recognizes the internal dvd drive when I insert a blank dvd to burn.

Not a thing we can do, it has suffered a hardware failure so your only option is to take it into your local Apple Store or AASP to be serviced.
    Good luck.
