What Fan Speeds Are Normal?

My fan speeds are (in rpm): CPU-1800 HD-2200 OD-1300
Until I got the Sims 3, I didn't have a problem with the heat of my computer. But after I bought the game, I felt a need to download a fan control software to keep the temps down. I tried smcFanControl, but I couldn't get it to work. So then, I downloaded something called iMac Fan Control. It seemed to work, and I could access it in my System Preferences. But I noticed that it did something strange. Even at it's lowest settings, my fans ran just a little bit louder than they used to, so they are actually audible.
I deleted the program, but the fans still ran louder. It must have left some back-ground information on my computer. I want to get rid of it!!!
I have tried resetting the smc, PRAM and NVRAM, and started up in safe mode. Nothing works.
I need help!

Every Mac model and size seems to have its own default minimum fan speeds. FanControl was over riding them until you were able to get all of the remnants out. Each of the steps should have allowed your Mac to resume using just its default speeds.
I use smcFanControl. I like it a lot. Plus it comes with Spanish as well! The first time you launch it smcFanControl reads your Mac's default fan speeds and creates a default set. Then I have made three more sets with ever faster speeds that I use under different circumstances which cause my temps to rise. Here in Monterrey we have had weeks of right about 40°C every day. I have no air conditioning, only a fan. I have a Hot and a Really Hot set of fan speeds as it gets warmer in the house during the day. Also a set for when I use my EyeTV Hybrid connected to cable television and using an ext HDD as a DVR.

This is a new issue on an old setup. The mac was recently upgraded to maverick. thanks
Say no more.. upgrading to Mavericks.. any upgrade install is prone to issues.. the Mavericks one is the worst of any recent upgrades.
Lets just try and isolate the problem.
In the setup of the AE, give different names to the two wireless bands.. so go into the airport utility.. click the AE, Click edit.. click the wireless tab.. and now type in a new name.
    Try AE24ghz
Then click the wireless options and change the name for the 5ghz..
    Make it AE5ghz
    Then update the AE.
In the computer.. select either band.. and see if your other clients are affected if they use the band that the Mac is not using.
Alternatively turn off wireless in the macbook and use ethernet.. oh please please have a Mac with an ethernet port.. otherwise buy a Thunderbolt to Ethernet adapter.. it is well worth having. wireless is never to be trusted.

  • Are my fan speed/temperature normal? Please answer quickly, warranty is expiring!

    I have an MSI GF4 TI4200-8X.
I had some problems with my computer, when playing certaing games it freezes after a while, with reboot needed. I think I got down to my graphics card overheating. While using 3D turbo experience, I found out my fan speed was about 2700-2900 RPM (I think it is the minimum!!!) and my temperatures where around 52-55 idle. Today I noticed my fan slowed down, and it wasn't even showing fan activity, I tried pushing the fan a bit and it stopped completely. It has restarted again, with fan speed around 1700, after leaving the computer running for a while it got back to 2700 with slight variations to 2600 +-. The temperature went up to 58º!!! But I think it's "stable" now at 53º. What I'd like to know is if these values are normal for my graphics card. I couldn't find much information about this in this forum, one or two messages mencioned fan speeds around 3900-4000. As my board is still covered by warranty I'd like to know if I have reasons to send it back. So.......do I?

    Quote
What does usually happen there when you have a graphics card under warranty, and it has a problem, you send it back right? And in the meanwhile? They give you a replacement until the other one comes back from repair (or even exchanged by a new one) ? I don't really know how these things work in these situations..
Like I said you will be without a card for a while. It could take weeks or posibly a month or more. It is not like a car. Contact the reseller to see if you still have a return possibilty with them, otherwise, you have to go to MSI for an RMA request.
An aftermarket cooler can be found at an online retailer or even at a Consumer Electronics SuperStore but I do not know what you have in your country. Thermaltake http://www.thermaltake.com/ has good products, perhaps you have a reseller in your area that sell their products.

  • Intel Imac fan speed? normal ?

Hi guys , im a new mac user and i was wondering i downloaded istat pro
and i noticed a low humming noise when running so i lookd at the fan speed and
    the
    cpu 1200
    harddrive 1600
    optical drive 800
im not sure if those are good temps but liek some times after using for a couple hours while just webbrowsing and listening to music i feel the heat coming from like the screen and i touch it and its pretty hot!
an i just use it for webbrowsing and music and downloading like the only third party software i own is utorrent and handbrake..
i posted my computer stats below
    are Overview:
    Model Name: iMac
    Model Identifier: iMac9,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
    Processor Speed: 3.06 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 1
    Total Number Of Cores: 2
    L2 Cache: 6 MB
    Memory: 4 GB
    Bus Speed: 1.07 GHz
    Boot ROM Version: IM91.008D.B08
    SMC Version (system): 1.45f0
    ATI Radeon HD 4850:
Chipset Model: ATI Radeon HD 4850
    Type: Display
    Bus: PCIe
    PCIe Lane Width: x16
    VRAM (Total): 512 MB

Those look like normal fan speeds for the latest Macs. But you can use software that allows you to create different speed sets for different circumstances.
I use smcFanControl. The first time you start the app it reads your Mac's default fan speeds and creates a default set. But you can create more sets with increased speeds. I live in Monterrey, Mexico with no air conditioning, just fans. It has been around 40°C everyday for weeks on end, and lately hotter. So I have a Hot set where all speeds are ramped up 200 rpms over the default speeds. And I have a Really Hot set where they are all ramped up 200 rpms more over Hot. If I see the temps edging up I usually choose the next set and increase the rpms and that usually brings the temps down to normal. If I see the temps drop down below normal I back off a set on the rpms.
I think Handbrake is probably a bit CPU intensive, so it probably sends your temps up above their normal range when you are just surfing the net.
BTW, rpms are not temps, those are fan speeds. Revolutions per minute.

I am going to the verizon store up broadway now to compare ping/3g data on LG Revolution and this
i already saw the Thunderbolt way way faster but I sense that phone ,might make me crazy in ways this Charge could never but I will check it out too as there have been incremental upgrades through July 18 or so that keep working at that phone's issues.

  • My macbook internet download speed is extremely slow. I have tried other computers both windows and mac on the same line and speeds are normal. What is the problem?

My macbook internet download speed is extremely slow. I have tried 2 other computers, another mac and windows and the download speed is over 10mb but with this macbook pro it is less than 1mb. What is causing this and how to fix?

To find out how much space you have & what is left, open up Disk Utility/Machintosh HD/First Aid.  The info will be at the bottom of the window.
Sluggish Finder - Bunch of icons on your desktop?  An overcrowded desktop slows down your Mac.
Get rid of needless Finder calculations - Open a window in Finder/View/Show View Options:  ensure "Calculate All Sizes" option is unchecked.
Internet related - It's likely that your broadband connection is the bottleneck.  You can check your speed on http://www.speedtest.net to see how fast your connection is.  If your web browser specifically performs slowly, quit and relaunch it.
If browser remains sluggish, empty its cache.
    Safari/Empty Cache
Firefox/Preferences - select the Network tab of the Advanced preferences and click the "Clear Now" button in the "Offline Storage" area.
Application related - Launch "Activity Monitor" - Applications/Utilities - click the CPU heading and see what float to the top.  If an application takes up a large chunk of CPU and won't let it go, it could be dragging down your Mac's performance.  Quit it by clicking the Quit Process button at the top of the Activity Monitor window.
Too little ram - max out your ram.
Solution may be found if you search in the "More Like This" section over in the right column.

  • Ideal fan speeds for a 20" iMac

    Hi,
I have a mid 2007 2 GHZ 20" Intel iMac, I recently had some unexpected shut down issues which I traced to a defective optical drive fan. I have SMC fan control loaded and it tells me that the DVD fan went off-on-off-on, I also ran an extended hardware test and that confirmed the bad fan, I replaced the fan and that was the end of my problems. However, I have been fooling with the fan speeds and now I am wondering what the ideal speeds for all three fans in my machine are? Can anyone help?
    Thanks,
    Rolly

I think you have to balance the need to run cooler against running the fans so fast you wear out the motors quickly. In general, it's probably best, at least for prolonged periods, not to run them any higher than maybe ~400 rpms above the defaults. But that's just my own guess. I don't have any statistics on what fan speeds are ideal for attaining that balance.
Then again, fans are much cheaper to replace than drives, logic boards, or power supplies.
I have maybe 5 or 6 pre-sets, including the defaults. This is one setting I often use in summer, but I may sometimes go a bit higher in very hot weather. I also have a fan running at the back, which helps keep the internal temps lower and allows me to run the internal fans slower than I would otherwise. In extremely hot weather, it's pointless to blow hot air around faster. When it's like that I sleep the computer more often.
These are the defaults on my 21.5

  • Too high fan speeds? 15" late 2011 MPB

    Hi!
I bought my new 15" MacBook Pro in the end of november, and it is therefore the late 2011 version.
I have huge problems with the fans, though. Since day one, I have always thought that the computer was kind of loud, in comparision to my 2009 13" MacBook Pro, but just thought that since this new computer is more powerful, with the i7 CPU and everything, it was normal.
Now, a little more than two months later, I have had enough. I have tried using Google to find an answer to this extremely annoying problem, but everyone is saying the same thing. Reset the SMC, reinstall OS X, install Fan Control apps, etc. I have tried everything, and nothing works as it should do.
When in idle, with nothing but Finder on, the average temps and fan speeds are:
    CPU: 52°C
    CPU Heatsink: 47°C
    GPU: 45°C
    Left fan: 3700 RPM
    Right fan: 2600 RPM.
I have tried using Fan Control apps (smcFanControl and Fan Control), resetting SMC, etc.
If I look in the activity monitor, everything looks normal. Nothing that spikes out of the ordinary. Every time, it is the activity monitor app that has the highest percentage or CPU percentage.
When having Safari and my mail client Sparrow on, and just casually browsing on the internet, the average temps and fan speeds are:
    CPU: 64°C
    CPU Heatsink: 60°C
    GPU: 49°C
    Left fan: 4300 RPM
    Right fan: 3200 RPM
I would understand if I had these temps, fan speeds and noises if I were playing a graphic demanding game, or using Photoshop and Xcode.
    Computer spec:
    Intel Core i7 @ 2,4 Ghz
    8 GB RAM-memory
    AMD Radeon HD 6770M 1GB
    750 GB Hard Drive
    Late 2011
I am writing here and explaining my problem since I am not sure if I should go to an Apple Store and let them deal with it. Maybe there's nothing wrong. Maybe these temps and fan speeds are normal, and then I just have to adjust. Otherwise, I know that there is something wrong, and I will let Apple fix it.
Thank you in advance for any help!
    I appreciate it.
    Regards, Anton

Agree with Ogelthorpe. You have some type of hardware problem.
More then likely the heatsink that removes the heat from both the CPU and GPU is malfunctioning and has been from the first day.
I'm running a 15" 2.2 i7 with 8GB RAM 120GB SSD 500GB 5400RPM HDD and right now my CPU is 41c GPU is 34c and I have Chrome, Lightroom, DNG converter, Thunderbird,  and Word open.
Yes take it in and get it fixed.
I would of taken it back the day after I bought it, compared it to the units siting on the floor of the store I bought it and then asked for a new one.

  • IStat Pro: which fan speeds/temps do you have (iMac)

    Hi there,
yes, I know, this kind of question has passed before...
In order to eliminate everything which could cause my iMac to shut down itself after a while running, I really would be pleased to get a clear answer on this one. It seems more and more that it shuts itself down when it's on "regime" temp., if you know what I mean.
Anyway is there anybody out there who can say which speeds are normal (compared to intensive/not intensive use of your mac)? @ which temps?
On my iMac they are ALWAYS the same (even @ cold start), even if you see the temps going up.
I think that's weird: you should expect them to go up once in a while, no? Especially when it's getting "on temperature".
CPU fan: 1198 to 1202 rpm
Hard Drive: 1598 to 1602 rpm
Optical drive: 798 to 900 rpm
What speeds do your iMac fans run?
Any additional info or questions would be more then welcome.
    Thanks in advance!
    Grtz,
    Peter.

    HI,
Not sure why your iMac is shutting down... if you haven't tried... reset the SMC and see if that helps.

  • A1212 Macbook Pro Cooling Fan Speed / SMC / Service Battery

    Background:
I've owned my A1212 Macbook Pro Core 2 Duo since launch (Thanksgiving 2006 I believe). For some time now the temperature has been quite warm - more recently my right cooling fan has intermittently sounded like a jet engine and failed to speed beyond 1,500-2,000 rpm intermittently.
    1. I ordered the correct cooling fan for A1212 right and replaced.
    2. When I rebooted Macbook Pro here is what I see for temps in hardware monitor
    AMBIENT TEMP 31C/88F
    CPU A 44C 111F
    CPU CORE 1:36C/97F
    CPU CORE 2:39C/100F
"SMART DISK" — [DOES THIS MEAN THERE IS A SENSOR THAT IS NOT REGISTERING]
The hottest temp recorded is 109F/ CPU A temperature diode
The new cooling fan is majorly cooling the mac much better than prior fan.
    3. I can't find ANY way to stop the mac from running both cooling fans at 6,000rpm
    a) reset SMC (tried holding down power button 20 seconds after disconnecting battery
    b) reboot
    c) remove smcfancontrol
    d) use smcfancontrol
    e) monitor with temp monitor, hardware monitor, istat pro
    f) no runaway processes - not even hot
    4) I notice ( this was also showing up before install of new fan) in my battery icon it indicates "Service Battery" - while I do have a 4 yr old computer there was a recall on batteries so this battery is maybe 3 yrs old and I usually use computer plugged in.
I do not have my snow leopard boot dvd readily available to run hardware test on sensors, however techtool pro does not report any issues. I have not found any terminal commands to force the fan speed down nor any indication I have any apps that are accelerating it.
It appears that my fan speeds are accelerating shortly after power up - before OS X is even loaded completely - and never slow to normal speed except when mac is asleep.
IS IT POSSIBLE TO CONNECT THE FAN INVERTED (THE TWO PINS) MESSING UP ABILITY TO CONTROL FAN SPEED?
IS IT POSSIBLE THAT I INADVERTENTLY BROKE SOME SENSOR "SMART"?
I am thinking more and more that this is hardware related like a sensor. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated, while I don't have a Jet engine I have a very noisy mac

    Hi N,
SMART reports on a number of checks on the HD. I don't believe that's any part of the current issue.
I agree with you that my first inclination is toward a sensor issue; by default, if the sensor's are not reporting properly, the fans run full speed/6000RMP.

  • IStat reporting fan speeds of 999-1199+...

It seems that every time I check iStat, the three speeds are as follows:
    Fan 2: 999
    Fan 1: 1099
    Fan 0: 999
Are these normal operating perimeters? I know that fan 1 cools the gpu, what of the others?
I had one instance where one fan whirled really loud, and was at 3000rpm. Any thoughts on that?

Those fan speeds are identical to my own results from iStat Pro. I believe your Mac is operating within "normal" parameters.
Some folks occasionally report a similar revved-up fan experience. The fans do operate independently from one another and speed up and slow down as the system requires to maintain an optimal internal environment. As long as it returned to a more normal speed, I think all is as it should be.

  • C200 M1 PSU Fan speed varies

I have a C200 M1 running 1.4(3p), I am noticing some performance issues with this server, it just seems slow.  I went to it physically and you can hear the PSU fans spin up and slow down every few seconds.  Within an SSH to the CIMC I am seeing both fans vary from 2K to 7K RPMs every 3-5 seconds.  Here are the PSU details:

This server was running firmware 1.0(2) when I first found this issue, I have since upgraded it to the lastest code.  I have done a full shutdown and removed the PSUs and let it sit for a few minutes.
When the fan speeds are low, the CPU performance is very low, VMs running on it are slow.  Any thoughts??
    Thanks.

  • Mac pro 3,1 default fan speed?

Hey guys, ive been messing around with SMC fan Controller over the years, and have increased minimum fan speeds due to hotter ambient room temps, or simply because i was running extended cpu intensive activities. Good to take precaution since the 3,1s are known for increasing fan speed after things have already gotten too hot. This can lead to overheating. At some point within the SMC fan Controller app, i changed the "default" fan choice higher instead of creating a new blank custom fan setting before choosing my fan speeds. My problem now is that i dont know what the default settings were. i think one was 500, 600, 600, 800 RPM maybe? No idea.
its is a 8 core 3.2 earl 2008 3,1 Mac Pro Desktop. This has different fans than all other mac pros so this question is 3,1 specific.
I think the four fans are labeled:
    Power supply
    I/O
    CPU
    Intake
not entirely sure because i am away from teh computer at the moment.
    Thanks
    -Mitch

smcFanControl's preferences are located in /Users/<user>/Library/Preferences as com.eidac.smcFanControl2.plist. I believe that if you move that to the desktop and restart, a default plist will be rebuilt for your particular Mac. If that doesn't fix it, you can always put the plist back where it was.
Or, you can simply make smcFanControl not a startup item and then use something like iStatPro to see what the unadjusted fan speeds are because smcFanControl doesn't change the built-in speed defaults, it just overrides them as the lowest fan speeds.

  • G5 Jive fan speeds unacceptable (to me).

I have been running two extra HDs mounted on the floor in front of the CPU fans for some time. With my homebrew arrangement the four CPU fan speeds are higher (via Hardware Monitor) than the unmodded arrangement by 200-300 rpm typically, barely audible and quite acceptable.
I thought I would get a G5jive to do a "proper job" instead of my "homebrew". However the jive causes blockge equivalent to three HDs even if you only fit two drives, and the fan speeds have gone up by around 1000 rpm, very noticeable and unacceptable to me.
What are others experiences? I searched before buying and didn't see anything about fan speeds, only about power draw and cut out on start...which has not been a problem for me even when I tried three drives in the jive.
    Thanks
    Mike

I have gone back to my 'homebrew' set up with two drives in the compartment in front of the CPU fans, but this time mounting them right at the edges and as high as possible. This gives a nearly unobstructed flow to the fans, especially the lower CPU B fans, and speeds have dropped accordingly, especially for CPU B.
When mounted on the floor, as I had before, and as the G5Jive does, the flow to CPU B fan is blocked more than CPU A fan. Yet on my G5, CPU B is always working harder, more current, more fan speed. So raising them up has had a much bigger effect on CPU B fan speeds.
One of the two extra drives is a 150 Gb Raptor, my boot drive. Mounted where it is, it is running 10 degrees C cooler than the drives in the drive bay, which must be good.

  • Corecenter pro fan speeds

I'm running corecenter pro as MSI told me PC Alert wasn't supported on the Master 2 FAR. I noticed that the CPU1,2 and System fan speeds are ALWAYS 0. When I'm booting and go into the BIOS it tells me the fans are running and they are usually around 1200 rpms, yet Corecenter always reports fan speed as 0.
Is this a known bug in Corecenter?

After a bunch of late night reading, I see it's related to whether or not you let the BIOS manage the temperature or not.
Still a secondary question is why is setting the system fan speed not available to me in the bios? I have a smart fan plugged in and the bios even shows what speed the fan is running at, I just don't seem to have the option to adjust it for temperature and tolerance within the bios area.
